The vote's all but decided, yet the way it's gone is something of a shame. It seems as though people are voting with primarily power-driven OOC considerations in mind. There's nothing wrong with that, EAR's neat, but I wanted to take the opportunity to lay out a case against it:
Assuming Responsibility retreads the same path Daniel took at the end of Mask to become the Auditor, one of escalation to address cosmic ills. But Daniel and Zane are different protagonists; the former needed little perusasion to sign on to fight for humanity. He was rootless, with no family ties and a backstory filled with lies, which turned out to be intimately tied to the cosmology at the highest level. Pulling a Cincinnatus and retiring to go farm didn't fit who or what he was.
Zane's just a guy. He started with no Godcard, only an aptitude for punching and a desire to have fewer gangs in his life. While never reluctant to accept power needed to protect his friends and avoid entanglement, it isn't intrinsic to his character. EAR is a refutation of his trajectory throughout the quest. He didn't leap right into the vigilante lifestyle after taking down the Zuchezzis, gave Phobos and the Boreads to his friends, refused Mephistopheles' offer, opted to ride out the gang war in the Wardens' safehouse, bailed on Olympus as soon as possible, and so on. The mystery box is shiny, of course, and EAR promises power beyond all reason if Zane is victorious.
Yet it also entails signing up for an eternity of dealing with other people's shit; if not giving up on his dreams, then kicking them down Zane's list of priorities. Do we even know for sure that it maximizes his odds of victory over the forces of Hell, relative to the other options? He'll have to refuse direct aid, which has been crucial to most of his victories so far. Zane saved Johnny's ass from the Mangler's jaws, yes, but the converse is also true. And speaking from a non-strategic standpoint, do we as players want a final arc that features less camaraderie? Banter with Spike and Brick, development of Zane's budding relationship with Helene and bond with Shen? Those have been some of my favorite scenes so far.
