Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

[x] "I have it."
[x] Fish it out and hand it over.
[x] As you are handing it over, "Now that I have retrieved for you your necklace, may I ask of you a boon, kitsune-sama?"
[x] Assuming that se agrees to hear our request...
- [x] "This evening, working on your behalf, I have referred to you a number of times as a spirit-ally of the Crab Clan. I ask that you make of this a true thing - that you work to harm and hinder those of jikogu and the shadowlands, and aid and assist those that oppose them, as the opportunity presents, and your rules and other obligations permit.

I think it's a fair trade.

Hmmm... actually the vote is good. Since you want a better phrasing, how about this.

[x] "Yes. I do have it."
[x] Fish it out and hand it over to the spirit.
[x] "I hope you and your beloved find peace one day, kitsune-san."

[] Return to the camp with the ashigaru. Yasuki-sama would be waiting for your return, expecting to hear how was it all. Leave no details apart when speaking to him.
[] Also, a bit of chatter with the ashigaru in the meanwhile would be nice. Thank them for their assistance, if is neccesary (or doesn't imply anything, accorsing to the samurai code.)

I would like to say, than in favor to find her husband as soon as she can, the kitsune may not accept Sosuke's request, but is better to ask for it, since we don't lose anything for trying.

She's thankful with him, so she may gives us reward of some kind. Not like Sosuke should expect it, because Samurai, but knowing how precious is that necklace for her...

Also, maybe with "noble spirit" will suffice. No need to being too educated to her. Spirits are powerfull, caprichious (ish) creatures, yes, but I don't think it will be a problem in not refering her with "-sama".

Hmm... yes, it won't.

Still, Sosuke may have to inform of this to Yasuki-sama as soon as he return to the camp. Hence why I added this last vote.

Any other ideas will be appreciated. :)

(why brain, why you ignite my inspiration for such a wall 'o text this late in the night? I don't get you...)

EDIT: She has suffered enough. My thank you Storm Jumper.

Actually, this calls for an etiquette check. We don't know a whole lot about spirits (and the ones we do know about are various forms of the enemy), but we can at least start with what we do know. If this were, say, a phoenix or crane courtier who had about one more point in status than we did, and we had performed for them a similar favor, would it be acceptable to request a specific boon in this way, or would that just be boorish?

All right, let's roll and see!

Etiquette Roll: 6k3=52

Holy shit…

Okay, here's the skinny. If you went out of your way to help a fellow Clan mate, then no reward of any sort should be asked for or anticipated. Helping your fellows is helping the Clan, and thus expected of you. If they want to give you gifts in return, that's entirely their prerogative. When you do things for other Clans it's a bit different. It is not uncommon, and actually somewhat expected, for when you do give aid to other Clans that they provide recompense in some manner, whether it be material gifts given in a tactful manner or favorable dealings with your Clan in the future.

It is not unheard of for a Samurai of another Clan to ask a boon of the Clan they are doing a favor for, though must be presented in a very respectful manner. Requesting a boon after you've completed a task is not all that common, but depending on how you do the asking it is not against propriety. More often, though, the Samurai providing assistance would have given a sign of what they desired beforehand in a roundabout manner, and the Clan being helped would provide what they could along those lines once the deed is done. They'd likely play it as having heard the Samurai was looking for something like this, and they would be only happy to provide such for the assistance the Samurai has given them. Then there'd be a short gift giving ritual, and events would progress from there.

Granted, this is everything Sosuke knows of dealing with other Samurai on this issue. He's got little knowledge of spirits, so how much of this information is applicable to such beings is unknown to him. So make of that what you will.

-explanation-

BOOM! Dice exploding like popcorn. :p

Regarding the knowledge he has about spirits, Sosuke knows about the trickering nature of the kitsune. Fortunately, her intentions were good.

Also, don't know anymore how much of an idea is to ask for a boon. After all, this spirit is bound by her laws regarding human interactions... so yeah, may not happen.

Not that we shoudn't try.

Also, now there's a posibility than the kitsune may reward him with something else.

She told him the truth, and she's thankful and... sense of duty and owing favors and all that.

I'm gonna need some more votes, everybody. I'd like to get this update ready in a few hours if I can.

[x] "I have it."
[x] Fish it out and hand it over.
[x] "I hope you and your beloved find peace one day, kitsune-san."

*shrugs* The lady's been through enough. Let her go on and wait for her loved one.

[x] "I have it."
[x] Fish it out and hand it over.
[x] "I hope you and your beloved find peace one day, kitsune-san."

[x] "Yes. I do have it. I also want to let you know I have made my best effort to not get involved in unneccesary bloodshed, and even they said about their wishing to go help my clan."
[x] Fish it out and hand it over to the spirit.
-[x] "Now that I have retrieved it for you, may I ask of you for a boon, noble spirit?"
-[x] Should she accept to listen to our request:
--[x] "At the time of the meeting with those ronin, I have referred to you ass a spirit-ally of the Crab clan for a number of times to retrieved your precious treasure. I would like to ask for you to make it so - that you work and cooperate for the well of my clan, directing your wrath against the filthy creatures of jigoku and, as long as your laws and obligations that binds you would permit, to aid those who oppose them."

[x] Regardless of her desicion, show your greetings to the spirit, and let her depart.
[x] Return to the camp with the ashigaru. Yasuki-sama would be waiting for your return, expecting to hear how was it all. Leave no details apart when speaking to him.

Leave her be, she has suffered enough. Besides, treating her like a fellow part of the clan might be better for the long term, so:

[x] "I have it."
[x] Fish it out and hand it over.
[x] "I hope you and your beloved find peace one day, kitsune-san."

[x] "I have it."
[x] Fish it out and hand it over.

Ahhh. Okay. modification to mine, then.

[x] "I have."
[x] Fish it out and hand it over.
[x] Once it's handed over "Honorable spirit, I do have a favor I would ask of you."
- [x] "This evening, I have told a number of people that you were a spirit-ally of the Crab Clan. It was the best way I could see to acquire your necklace for you without inappropriate bloodshed. Still, the possibility that I might have spoken falsehood weighs upon me. I do not ask you to do anything that would bring you in conflict with your other obligations, or keep you from you love, but I would request that, when the opportunity presents itself without undue cost to you, you act to oppose the workings of Jikogu, and to assist those who do likewise."

Seems solid.

Also love the quest you got here Winged Knight, and am greatly looking forward to the further adventures we will run into here with best clan. :D

"I have it," you say, pulling the pendant out of your pocket.

The Kitsune's eyes flash with delight, and she walks closer to you. She bows her head down, and in a few seconds you realize what she wants. You kneel down to her level, and with both hands you gently settle the necklace around her neck.

You allow yourself a smile as she raises her head, and give her a nod from where you kneel. Her eyes are shining as she looks at you, aglow with both happiness and their own inner light.

"I hope you and your beloved find peace one day, Kitsune-san," you say in as gentle a voice as you can manage.

"I do as well," she says softly. She pauses for a moment, and then gives you a proper bow. "You have gained a friend this day, Hiruma Sosuke-san. Should you or any of your Clan find their way in the Shinomen-Mori, you will have an ally of myself and the Kitsune who live there. We will give you and your Clan mates as much aid as we are able. Of that, you have my solemn vow."

You blink in surprise at her words, and open your mouth to tell her such things are not necessary. But before you can speak, the Kitsune has dashed away. You keep track of her for only an instant, her form shining against the night, and then in a flash of foxfire she is gone.

You stand up, slightly bewildered. This entire evening has been quite strange, and certainly not what you expected to experience as you journeyed away rom the Great Carpenter Wall. But even with the aggravation you felt with the Ronin, seeing the joyful look on the Kitsune's makes it all worth it. You've done a good and proper thing this night.

"An odd experience," Hoshi says.

"I have to agree," Jinbei responds. "But not a bad one, I think."

"No," you say, a small smile gracing your lips. "Not bad at all." You look over your shoulder to the Ashigaru. "Well then, let's return to camp."

You arrive back at your camp within a half hour. Two of the Ashigaru are standing guard, the other sleeping nearby. Nothing untoward appears to have happened in your absence, thankfully. Yasuki Goro is outside his tent, writing something in a small book. He glances up at you and grins.

"From your expression," he says. "I see you were successful."

"I was," you respond, giving the man a bow. "Thank you, Yasuki-sama, for allowing me to do this."

"It was no trouble, lad. I'm curious to hear exactly how things happened," the Courtier says. He stifles a yawn with one hand. "In the morning, though."

"Then we shall speak in the morning, Yasuki-sama," you say back.

"Good," Yasuki Goro says. He gets up and nods to you. "Good night then, Sosuke-san."

Yasuki Goro returns to his tent, and you return to your own. Soon enough you have stripped out of your armor and are clad in nothing but your small clothes. You move yourself into your blankets and rest your head on the small pillow that came with your traveling gear. And soon enough, with a smile of satisfaction, you are fast asleep.

[] Timeskip to Zakyo Toshi.
[] Timeskip to Shinden Osano-Wo.
[] Timeskip to Ginasutra.
[] Write in.

Sosuke has gone out of his way to do an honorable thing this evening. As such, he gains 2 Honor points. He has also had new experiences and had to come up with quick solutions while keeping his cool, and has thus gained 2 Experience points. His deeds were also taken note of by several other people, and he has gained 2 points of Glory.

And also, we won a potential ally in the kitsune, who would aid us in the incoming war.

Maybe in the future Sosuke would drop by and say hi to her, just to make sure she's okay and if she had success in her search.

But for now.

[] Save the EXP points.
[] Timeskip to Shinden Osano-wo.

Shall we consider talking to Yasuki-sama before the timeskip? Also, if we can get a chance to timeskip into a place that it's between Crab and Scorpion territories, before jumping into Scorpion lands, then we should take it.

IIRC, Yasuki mentioned this place before...

PD: Unless my search-fu is finally failing, I can't find it...

EDIT: Well, in the borderline between both territories...

EDIT: New vote ahead.

Is Shinden Osano-wo in Crab lands or Scorpion lands? Link is here, but it doesn't say which side of the line it's on.

In particular, I wouldn't want to miss the Scorpion border town encounter - it's a chance to interact with the Scorpion in a somewhat limited engagement before we head into the scorpion lands proper.

Timeskip should include a few chats with the ashigaru (as we realized that we'd like to know our potential subordinates better) and the implied full debriefing regardless.

For the EXP points, saving them isn't terrible, but we might want to pick up the planned points in Courtier and Perform(storytelling). We know we want them, and it's possible that we'll have cause to make use of them wherever it is that we're timeskipping to. If nothing else, we can try telling the story of our Gempukku to whoever it is that we're talking with - a way to provide some entertainment and also practice our story a bit.

Fist of all, where is Shinden Osano-wo with relation to the Scorpion border? Which is the smaller time skip?

On the write in, we should really talk to the Ashigaru. They accompanied us on the quest, saw some cool things, so talking to those two at a minimum sounds like a good idea. Also, we might want to figure out their capabilities in case we have need of them again.

I'm not sure how to phrase this however, so if we go this route, someone else should probably write it.

Also, given our plan to get some points in all social skills, maybe we should put one into courtier?

EDIT: Ninja'd by the tiny squid
