Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

I'm actually surprised that we brought up P'an Ku, even as circumspectly as we did. I figured that would only be mentioned if he thought we were hiding something about what happened. Given he didn't press for more details, I was rather surprised that we brought it up at all.

Yeah, given the phrasing of the winning vote I'd have expected it to be used as a contingency only, and not one whose circumstances were triggered in this instance- in fact, just about the opposite of its contingency was triggered, as instead of saying "I need more details"/"you're hiding something" he said "Okay, I believe you".

That's my mistake, actually. I misread the vote and whipped up the ending to this update while at work. I've since corrected it.

Yandere-chan deserves some time.

In the sense that the Void Dragon is an agent of the Heavens and the established order it's good. It also likes mortals, which is usually a good thing, but can have... unfortunate consequences given how powerful it is and the ramifications of all that power acting in any way on Ningen-do. Whereas the Shadow Dragon is the sadly degraded remnant of the fallen Dragon of Air who was corrupted by Nothing after it fell to Earth in the process of helping out during the aftermath of the Second Day of Thunder. Shadow Dragon is pretty unequivocally bad. I think it was the aftermath anyway, might have been the Day itself.

Yes, yes. You are all correct. I had a thinko. I was, in fact, meaning to refer to the Shadow Dragon. I've just been spending a bit of time lately in other game systems where Void=Bad and had some crossed wires.

The offending post has been edited appropriately.

The phrasing is ambiguous enough that Yasuki understood that there was only Nisshoku at the Pale Radiance.

Sousuke specifically stated that "Nisshoku and the... being he represents" wished to offer him gifts.

In effect, P'an Ku wasn't the being Nisshoku represented. He represented his boss, and P'an Ku (not the boss in question) decided to tag along to meet Sousuke.

So, Sousuke told the truth, but made a lie of omission.

The lie of omission was the intended outcome. Our comments were in response to an earlier version of the update, which featured Sosuke circumspectly bringing up P'an Ku after Goro told Sosuke that he believed him, which was basically the exact opposite of my intention with that write in. @Winged Knight proceeded to correct the update to match the write-in vote, as he misread what it said.

"It was the creature Nisshoku, who sent that other letter asking to meet at the Pale Radiance," you whisper, leaning close to the courtier. "He said that he and the… being that he represents wanted me to know that they wished me fortune in the disposal of Moto Shinichiro's copy, and that there would be no interference from them."

"No interference?" your Lord whispers. "But if Nisshoku is an agent of the Shadow Dragon, wouldn't he and Moto Shinichiro be allies?" He rubs his chin, brow furrowing as he considers the matter. "How odd."
Could be intended to sow doubt and hesitation and uncertainty among the party; we were set to defeat Shinichiro, but this way we're more doubtful, a bluff to help out their agent. Or, I dunno, to make them investigate more deeply and bam. (Or maybe to just bring info to people and thus get us tarred-by-association? The Crab might be willing to talk about Taint and such, but most people really would not. A set up.)

On the other hand, could have been true; that they do want Shinichiro removed.

Buut I think "could be a bluff, could be true, could be a set-up for us to self-sabotage" was apparent to everybody here already. And probably to the samurai.

"Yes, Yasuki-sama," you respond, bowing to him. "I understand."

As you leave your Lord's chambers, it comes to mind that in all the commotion of the last day you've still not spent much time at all with your companions save Shirou. This is an oversight you feel you should correct as quickly as possible, for while everyone is busy it is certainly possible to at least check briefly upon their wellbeing.

You briefly consider who to inquire after. Shirou would normally be the first person you would interact with, but you've spent much time with him these last few days. Kitsu Himawari was in the city last you heard, helping perform various rituals. It would not be a swift endeavor to find her, and you wouldn't wish to disturb her as she deals with delicate spiritual matters.

With that in mind you seek out Mirumoto Hanabi. She, like the rest of the Mirumoto Bushi within Shiro Kitsuki, is deep into preparations for the conflict to come. As you are a guest, you do your best to not cause distraction as you ask after her location. As a consequence it takes you some time, but eventually you discover where Hanabi is stationed.

The woman greets you with a smile that lights up her face as you approach the front doors of Shiro Kitsuki. Hanabi is in full armor, as are the nine other Mirumoto guards standing with her next to the entrance to the castle. They look at her with mixtures of amusement and exasperation, but do not comment as you approach.

"Hiruma-san!" Hanabi practically chirps, bowing to you. "It's so good to see you again!"

"I must say the same, Mirumoto-san," you respond, also bowing. "I have missed your company, though I understand your absence. This week has no doubt been quite busy for everyone."

"Indeed," Hanabi says, her shoulders slumping as she sighs. "I so wanted to go see you, but my obligations have kept me hard at work." She smiles again. "But then you came to visit me! "

"Yes, well," you begin, not entirely certain how to respond to the woman's exuberance. The other guards are all looking elsewhere as you speak, though you swear some of them are smiling… You're not certain at all what that's about. "I thought it might be a good idea, so long as I am not interfering with you performing your duties."

"Oh, you should be fine," Hanabi says. "We're just here to take over escort for the important guest coming in today." She pauses, her expression growing oddly reserved. "I believe she is the woman you mentioned before to Kitsuki-dono."

Your eyes widen. "Shinjo Wanli-san is coming in today?"

"Yes," Hanabi answers. "She should be here any-"

The great doors to the castle open, revealing ten more Mirumoto Bushi surrounding the tall figure of Shinjo Wanli in her furs and heavy armor. One man is carrying her spear, while another holds her swords. This is… irregular, to say the least. In truth, it is should be taken as an insult. But for all that, Shinjo Wanli does not look angry.

Instead she just looks very tired, with bags around her eyes indicating she has had little rest. This is not surprising considering she completed the trip to Shiro Kitsuki almost two full days before you would have expected her to. Even still, she stands tall. There is a look of relief about her face, her posture more at ease than the last time you saw her. It is as if a great weight has been taken from her shoulders, and when she moves it is with much more grace than your previous meetings.

Shinjo Wanli notices you quickly, and after a short conversation with her escort makes her way over to you. They leave her alone, though they do not return her weapons. She bows low, and when she speaks she keeps her voice to a whisper.

"My greetings, Hiruma-san," she says. "It is good to see you again, and I wish to convey my thanks."

"I am glad you made the trip safely," you respond. "And there is no need to thank me. I simply made sure important information reached those who needed to know it."

"Oh," Hanabi says, her smile growing stiff. "I hadn't known you two were so well acquainted." She bows to Shinjo Wanli, and you could almost swear the room grows a little colder. Perhaps it is a draft from the open doors? "My greetings, Shinjo-san. Please, you must share with me how you met Hiruma-san as we make our way to Kitsuki-dono's chambers."

[] Be silent.
[] Give a brief mention of your meeting with Shinjo Wanli.

...I hate to say this, Hanabi, but this isn't a fight you're going to win.
