Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

This link shoudl give you a nice solid backing on who and what the crab are, and the various subsections under "The Story" contain more than you could possibly want to know (...though it's largely in the form of awesome fic, so maybe you want to read them anyway).
Thanks for the link! Looks like this will keep me busy for a while.

[X] Sirrocco

Your breath is coming out in harsh pants, and your ribs are still burning, but you don't focus on any of that. Instead, you rush over to the fallen Nezumi. The rest of his scout pack has already gathered around him, administering aid. The Nezumi's breathing is even worse than your own, and he's shaking terribly where he lays.

"Jarit'ya's ribs all broke-broken," Gazat'ken say, looking up. "Won't be running anytime soon."

"Damn," Talak'tet says, wincing a little as Zara'hala bandages the wound on his side. "That's a problem."

"Can wait-wait for later," Zara'hala says as she finishes bandaging her leader. "Interrogate the stupid Goblin first. Get-get what we came for."

"Right," Talak'tet says, standing up. He looks at Gazat'ken. "Keep an eye on Jarit'ya. See if you can't belt up his chest so his ribs don't move too much."

Gazat'ken bobs his head and immediately took two pieces of rope from his pack. He wraps them gently around Jarit'ya, one above his ribs and one below, and then tightens. Jarit'ya screams in pain, but when it was over begins to breathe a bit easier.

Talak'tet nods at that, and then turns to the still bound Warmonger. The Goblin had tried to scuttle away with little success. Snarling, Talak'tet hauls the Goblin up and slams him against the boulder situated near the cave mouth.

"We have some questions for you," he says menacingly. "And we're going to have them."

The Goblin says something in his own foul language, and Talak'tet slaps him hard across the face. Blood flies from the Goblin's mouth, and the creature glares pure hate at Talak'tet.

"In Rokugani," the Nezumi says. "I know you understand it."

The Goblin scowls and turns his head to the side. "Not telling you anything."

"We have way of making you talk-talk," the other female Nezumi says, leaning in close with a short sword. But the Goblin just sneers in response.

"You think I'm scared of you?" the Warmonger says before spitting on the ground. "Not in the least. You fools are nothing."

"I think we're certainly something," you growl, looming behind Talak'tet. You gently heft your tetsubo, patting the head carefully in your hand. "We killed your pet Ogre, after all. One good hit, and I took its leg clean off. Wouldn't take any more effort to start pulling you apart, scum. Best start being cooperative before I start breaking bones."

The Goblin looks up at you, his eyes narrowing. The he looks at your still bloodied tetsubo, and then beyond you toward the unmoving body of the Ogre. You can see the Warmonger considering something for a brief moment, and then his frown turns into a nasty smile.

"You wanna hear something, Crab?" the Goblin says, his eyes wide and wild. "I'll tell you something, then. Something true. The Crab Clan Thunder, Hida Atarasi, didn't perish after the defeat of the Fallen Kami all those centuries ago."

The Goblin's voice picks up as he struggles against his bonds, trying to come closer to you. The creature smells awful, and even from this distance the stench of its breath almost makes you gag.

"No," the Warmonger continues. He's all but shouting now, ignoring Talak'tet completely even as the Nezumi holds him back. The Goblin's gaze is on you and you alone. "Atarasi willingly drank the blood of Fu Leng as the Dark One lay prone, and became Jigoku's servant! Then Hida went out, knowing what his son had become, to fight him! Hida battles his child to this day, Crab! But soon enough the father will fall, and the son of your Clan's Kami will lead an army that will destroy the entirety of your Empire! Your founder will die, and your greatest hero will kill everything you hold dear!"

You're breathing harshly again, and this time not from pain. No, your breath quickens from sheer, unfiltered rage. Your vision is red, and the world fades away save for this monster in front of you. This thing… This filth is spewing lies about your Clan. Spewing lies about your patron Kami, about the Crab Clan Thunder who helped defeat Fu Leng over a millennia ago! To let these untruths go unheeded is an insult. It is a blasphemy!

You will not stand for it!

This is why the Brash disadvantage sucks at times. Still if we can keep our cool our friends might be able to get something out of him.

This is basically us right now

Gil's write in is ~FUN~ hopefully we can just stop at his arm.

[x] Conserve Your Anger, Harness Your Rage, Grind Their Bones To Dust. Well, Two out of three.
--[x] Break a collarbone. You know that it is one of the most painful injuries one can deliver onto a humanoid. Pain will serve as a reminder to the goblin not to spew lies at you.

Your righteous anger boils as the servant of Jigoku spews its filth against the kami Hida and his son, fallen fighting a mad god. Your vision blurs, shfiting red.

Bound as he is, the goblin has no means to escape when your enormous hands - crab hands, they call them, able to wield any weapon in defense of the Empire - land on the creature's shoulders. Your thumbs - already larger than those of your father - stray towards its throat for a second. You hear, dimly, the nezumi demanding you stop this at once.

Stop? Your hands tighten on the filthy thing's shoulders, and you can see the fear blossom in its eyes. It is a good look. The servants of Jigoku do well to fear the get of Hida. Your thums are against its collarbones, pressing, pressing, and the thing squirms and writhes as you crush the cockiness and the lies and the slander from its body.

You blink, twice, in rapid succession, as a harsh, snapping sound rings in your ears, followed by an agonized squeal from the goblin in your hands.

"Don't worry, he's still alive", you growl at the Nezumi, as you push hard against the goblin's broken collarbone, throwing it to the ground.

"Lies, deceit, it all ends with a Crab tetsubo crushing you, wretch." you sneer at the fallen goblin, wheezing with every pained breath.

(Unrelated: Does the Crab Clan even know that Atarasi rose as one of the akutenshi?)

(Edit: Don't forget, casual violence against the servants of Jigoku is SOP. They are automatically deserving of it :V)

I think we've just found a gift for the Kuni Witch-hunter contingent that's no doubt stationed at Shiro Hiruma.

[X] Break a bone.

Hm, interesting thing -- if this is true, that implies that the Kami Hida is still alive.

So, even if it were true, it wouldn't necessarily be as dispiriting as the Goblin might hope for.

Breaking the collarbone will make it shut up from the pain, as unbearable as it is. And we need it to talk.

I was thinking we could try and take it to a place where people who are better than us could give it a more complete interrogation, but circumstances do seem a bit against it.

(Unrelated: Does the Crab Clan even know that Atarasi rose as one of the akutenshi?)

Yes, actually. But the Crab know that Atarasi rose against his will because there was no one left to cut off his head as he fought to buy time for Shosuro and Shinsei to escape. Reports came in that the monster Atarasi had become was killing Crab Samurai en masse whenever they ventured too deeply into the Shadowlands. Even Hida, who had become a recluse by this point, heard about it by the year 200. It's why he ventured off into the Shadowlands alone in the first place. He killed the creature that had been his son, and then he died.

This isn't the first time members of the Crab Clan have heard this story, of course. It's written off as subversive lies. After all, the existence of the Tomb of the Seven Thunders puts doubt to this tale, as does the fact that Hida rests in the Heavens now. Which means he can't still be fighting his son.

Still, as the book Enemies of the Empire posits…
Enemies of the Empire said:
But in other times, in other worlds, perhaps it is these stories that are true, and the beliefs of the Rokugani that are wrong...

That's the problem with interrogating Goblins, their instinct of self preservation is not very strong. Making him feel pain should be the more effective retribution.

And about Atarasi: It is possible that he drank Fu Leng's blood willingly, after all he wouldn't be the only member of the Seven Thunders to make unsavory deals (*cough*Shosuro*cough*), but since he is dead now it doesn't really matter anymore. Hida Atarasi gave his life to save the Empire and the Crab will cheerfully beat anyone to death who says differently...

Quick, Crab-clan! To the Festering Pit! It's Bring Your Siege Ballista Day!

(It would be all sorts of amazing if Hida-kami were to return, alive, to the Emerald Empire, but that'd be a good thing and we know the Empire is not allowed to have nice things coming out of the Shadowlands, especially not a crabby kami.)

Those who treat regularly with the Nezumi might disagree with you.
And I would posit that the Nezumi are based in the Shinomen forest, which is totally 100% not the Shadowlands, therefore, they don't come out of the Shadowlands but into the shadowlands, very much like honorable Crab samurai do.

(Legalism: Crab Edition, where your lawyer can/will beat you with a tetsubo if need be.)

But yeah, the Empire is not allowed nice things in general.

You do not try to calm down, to restrain your anger. You're beyond that now, and you have no inclination to do so. This foul creature has spewed lies and slander against your noble Clan, and you will not let that go unopposed. It would not just be an insult to your honor, but to the honor of the entire Crab Clan and all of its ancestors!

You can dimly hear the Nezumi shouting in alarm as you step forward. You wrap your huge hands, already larger than your father's, around the Goblin's neck. In the back of your mind you feel something trying to move your arms away, but whatever it is doesn't have enough leverage and you easily rebuff it as you begin to squeeze. The Goblin struggles and chokes as you close off its air, but his expression seems… victorious?

That look on the little monster's face pulls you out of your rage somewhat. The Warmonger wants you to do this. It wants to die. But why? Why would the Warmonger try to goad you into killing him?

He doesn't want to risk revealing his secrets, you think dimly past the fury pounding through your skull.

That changes things. You do not let go of your rage, but you do redirect it. Snarling, you move your hands away from the Goblin's neck. You move down to its right arm, one hand about the elbow and one hand below, and give a wrenching pull. In less than a second there is a horrible snapping noise as the bones in the Warmonger's limb shatter.

The Goblin screams in agony and begins to hyperventilate. He closes his eyes to try and block out the pain, and you stand up. The red in your vision fades, and you look down to see the Nezumi were the reason for that pulling sensation.

"What do you think you're doing?" Talak'tet yells in your face. At least, he would be if he was your height. "We can't get what we need if he's dead!"

"He'll live," you growl, anger still simmering faintly in your heart. "I warned him I'd start breaking bones if he didn't cooperate."

Talak'tet shakes his head, muttering something in his native tongue. He reaches down to the Goblin's pack and unties it, tossing it to you. You catch the little package easily.

"Please look through that while we interrogate him," Talak'tet says. "I'm grateful to you for all your help, but I can't risk you losing your temper again. Leave this to us for now."

You want to retort to that, but hold your tongue. Talak'tet is right. If you hadn't caught yourself at the last second, you really would have killed the Warmonger. And then that entire fight would have been for nothing, and chances are no information would have been gained. Not that killing Shadowlands creatures is not a good thing just by itself, but failing the mission is not acceptable.

Sighing, you wander off out of earshot and dig through the Warmonger's pack. There's not much inside. There's a bloody dagger, no doubt Tainted. There are rations of some unidentifiable meat, no doubt Tainted. There are two canteens full of water, no doubt Tainted. All this is useless.

You toss all this aside and dig deeper, and smile when your hand brushes paper. You pull out five dirty squares of paper with numerous diagrams drawn out on them. One of them even looks like a map.

The unfortunate thing is that everything on the pages is all so bunched up together it's hard to read. You scratch your head as you look over it, and then peer back at Talak'tet. The Nezumi is questioning the Goblin rather animatedly, and sometimes pointing back in your direction over his shoulder. The Goblin, meanwhile, is giving short answers and trying not to look terrified every time Talak'tet motions to you. It seems like the Nezumi are pretty busy with what they're doing.

Having lost control like that... it was shameful. Hopefully your allies can make some use of it regardless. Better to remain here, out of the way, and not risk further... mistakes. We shouldn't involve ourselves further in the investigation unless they choose to have us join in in our own way. Trying to loom helpfully... well, we tried that. It went badly.

That can't go wrong eh?
