Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

I think my heart skipped a beat from raw joy when I saw that not only was there a L5R quest, but it was also a Best Clan quest at that. (You didn't choose the Crab Life, the Crab Life chose YOU!)

Because if there's a time to spend a void point, it's when facing an Ogre (even a weakened, malnourished ogre and with Nezumi backup). Those things are no-joke lethal.

Is there a difference between an Ogre and an Oni?

I'm fairly sure that in culture, those two tend to be equated, but I'm just making sure.

Also, what I know about Oni in L5R equate to "They are badass" "You probably want to have a party when taking one on" "This one time, one of them blew up on death. (There were two survivors; a cowardly douchebag guy who ran, and a Scorpion who miraculously survived. The Scorpion got revenge.)"

So basically just "Oni are badass and can range from mid-boss to boss or final boss level of challenge."

I could be misremembering, but I believe I recall that L5R ogres are a cursed species of mortals while L5R oni are spirits of hell called up by summoners with more power than sense.

Ogres are ageless (they do not die of old age) mortal brutes, eight feet tall on average, who are strong as bricks.

In other word, they're like Crab samurai, except invariably afflicted by Shadowland taint (the Dark Kami, Fu Leng, crashed pretty much into the Ogre/Nezumi heartlands), kinda stupid and most importantly, not human. (Hooray racism.)

Oni, on the other hand, are immortal demons that make you wish you were facing ogres instead.

-

To Elaborate:

A standard ogre is roughly the same as a somewhat-experienced Rank 2 Hida Bushi (Huge merit, Earth ring 3, thick skin for lots of Reduction instead of Heavy Armor to the same effect). Even so, they are much stronger than mere humans (Strength 6)

A malnourished ogre is, therefore, somewhat the better of a fourteen-year old Hiruma with Hida blood and Hida bushi training. (Probably less strength.)

-

To elaborate further:

A standard combat oni, taken straight from the corebook, Ugulu no Oni.

It has crawled out of Jigoku in the Festering Pit of Fu Leng (from literal hell) to cover all the lands in darkness. It's a thirteen-foot (four meters and a bit) tall creature whose purple skin is grotesquely swollen with muscle. (Strength 8)

It is almost impossible to wound without specifically targeting its weaknesses (24 reduction), which are the divine Jade and sacred materials like crystal and obsidian (12 reduction against those).

It is completely invulnerable against all arrows except those that are explicitly armor-piercing.

It is completely immune to two spells of its choosing (like "haha no you can't burn me, silly Phoenix")

In summary: It's a twelve-foot tall demon that can walk into half a dozen rank 4 Hida Bushi and have a reasonable chance of murdering them all.

Ogres wish they were as scary as Oni.

(And that#s not even getting into Superior Invulnerability types that say 'you cannot inflict more than 1 wound per strike unless it's from a Jade weapon'. Even if you shoot them with a Kaiu siege ballista.)

Welcome to the Quest! Always nice to see another L5R fan. Have some more Ogre fight!

You have spent a Void Point in response to the damage you took from the Ogre, which means Sosuke now has 61 Wounds. He is in the "Nicked" bracket and suffers a +3 to all TNs for every action.

Attack Rolls: 7k3=20, 7k3=42
Damage Roll: 6k3=22

You grit your teeth and set your shoulders, working through the pain in your ribs. The burn leaves quickly, and you start breathing normally. Your ribs still hurt, and you're almost certain you've got a nasty bruise on your chest, but the pain has died away to something more bearable. You can still fight.

You charge forward, hoping to press the Ogre back and give the Nezumi an opening. The Ogre bashes away your tetsubo with the tree, and then swings the makeshift club at you again. Your eyes go wide, and you just barely duck underneath the wild swing. The rush of displaced air directly over your head almost makes you lose your balance. If you had been just a second slower, or the Ogre just slightly faster, then that would have hit you full on. You're not certain just how many more blows from this monster you can take, but you know for a fact that you don't want any more. This fight needs to end.

You straighten, and then while the Ogre is still over extended from its assault you slam your tetsubo into the monster's side. There's a soft snapping sound, and beast roars in pain before stumbling back, clutching beneath its arm. Through the Ogre's fingers you can actually see that your blow has left a dent in its chest, meaning you've definitely broken a few of the beast's ribs. But even still, the Ogre stands.

You and the Nezumi have easily done enough damage to this creature to kill a Samurai in full armor, but this monster simply refuses to drop. Now, more than ever, you can truly appreciate the terrifying strength of those abominations that live within the Shadowlands. This behemoth just keeps on going.

Thankfully, however, this battle looks like it shouldn't go on for very much longer.

Seizing upon the opportunity presented by your haymaker strike, two of the Nezumi leap on to the Ogre's back and stab into its flesh repeatedly with short swords. The giant, now fully recognizing the presence of the Nezumi and the threat they pose, roars and thrashes. It reaches back with a colossal hand and grabs one of the Nezumi, throwing the poor Ratling into the side of the hill with enough strength to leave an indent in the rocky soil. The other Nezumi, meanwhile, has ceased stabbing and is now holding on for dear life as the Ogre twists and turns, trying to grab her as well.

Just for clarification, are you suggesting use of the Full Attack Stance? This will grant you +2k1 on your attack roll, but also decrease your Armor TN for one round.

[x]Slam our tetsubo into its gut, as hard as possible, trying to push it into the existing wound. Then pull it back out, twisting it as we do so. Use Full Attack Stance.

If I can do that without spending an action to switch stance? Yes.

Heh. At this point, it might actually be tricky to hit the thing in the torso *without* striking a previous wound.

You can certainly do that without using an action, yes. Only taking the Center Stance requires the full use of a round. I must clarify, however, that the Full Attack Stance decreases your Armor TN by 10. You will be much easier to hit because you have forsaken defense entirely in favor of offense.

Cripes you lot post quickly.

[x] Unleash a kiai to center yourself. Then hit the ogre and crush the wretched life from its body.

Sosuke is a child of one clan, of two families. The Hiruma in him tells him to harry the foe, but the blood of the kami Hida has always been strongest in his veins.

Taking one step forward, he raises his tetsubo high. Taking another, he channels all his anger at the perversity of this shadowland creature before him, it and all its ilk that menace the world, and unleashes a kiai that rattles the sparse shrubbery.

"HIDA!" It's a battelcry that has been on the lips of his blood-kin for fourteen centuries, and it's good enough for Sosuke. Glistening in the afternoon sun, the steel bar of the tetsubo descends.

Do you guys think it would be worthwhile call a raise to target his legs? In his current state it should be possible to get him to come crashing down. It would also have the advantage that we would avoid hitting our ally.

Does the extra chance to hit do anything to our damage dealt? If so, yes. The Ogre looks like he's going to be taking his next turn trying to get at the Nezumi currently hanging of of him - and it looks like he's on his last legs. One or two more good hits should take him - and every hit we do to him has to be racking up wound penalties on his side, which should both make it that much harder for him to hit us anyway and hurt his initiative. So - this turn, we whale on him and he goes after the nezumi. Next turn, we whale on him again, probably going before him in the round, due to wound penalties. Those two between the two of them, plus whatever the ratlings are throwing in, should be enough to take him down before he has a chance to test our armor next.

At least, that's my theory on things. If my theory is somehow deeply flawed (in a "the game doesn't work like that" way, for example) I'd be glad to know of it.

@Zechstein - that is a decent thought - and if we don't target the legs, we might want to target the head for similar reasons. @Winged Knight - is there any chance of hitting our ally if we take a standard swing at it now? Is this a thing we should be paying attention to?

We're nicked, so our accuracy isn't too good. A tetsubo is not a precision instrument, either. And Hida bushi training is very much "SMASH. Then SMASH. Then SMASH IT AGAIN."

And right here and now? Play to our strengths. Which is to say "hit it with the giant steel smash-bar over and over until it dies".

It's Sosuke's grandfather on his mother's side, and grandmother on his father's side, who are Hida, actually. His parents are Hiruma Shinobu and Kaiu Kana. His Sensei, by the way, is Hida Daisuke. But I certainly appreciate your fervor with your vote.

And for those wondering about the risk of hitting your ally, you should be. If you miss the strike on the Ogre's center mass I will roll to see whether or not you hit the Nezumi by accident.

Good to know! I must've missed that. And to be honest, with the amount of interbreeding in the clans, there's a reasonable chance that the Hide Hugeness can manifest almost at random.

("You're HUGE!" "Yyeeees, sensei. But I still want Bayushi courtier training." "You're HUGE." "They'll never expect it." "You're huge." "Yes, sensei.")

And it's very traditional to give a proper kiai before hitting things with a Tetsubo in Best Clan Land.

[X] Take advantage of the enemies distraction by assuming Full Attack Stance. Shouting the ancient battlecries your sensei taught you, you bring the full might of you tetsubo to bear against your opponents' legs, attempting to knock him off his feet.

Edit: Far better description ;)

with the plus 2k1 from the stance we can expect an average increase of 7, leading us to increase our chance of hitting even after the -5 penalty for called shot. Seems a good plan to avoid hitting our ally. Just be sure to get out of the way when he collapses.

One also has to consider the ogre's wound penalties and him being unbalanced because of the Nezumi.

This fight has gone on too long. The Ogre is taking all the punishment you and the Nezumi can dish out, and it's still standing. The beast is bleeding from half a dozen wounds, and it's still standing. This bastard is tough and strong and by all the glories of Heaven your ribs hurt from where this monster slammed that damned tree into you. If this battle drags on too much longer, someone is going to die.

You refuse to let that happen.

"I am the Wall!" you scream at the top of your lungs, drawing every gaze to you. The Ogre ceases its flailing, looking at you with wide eyes as you charge. You've forsaken defense entirely at this point. You've got to drop this monster now before it can recover properly. "I AM THE WALL!"

You strike with uncanny accuracy for the monster's right leg, careful to avoid hitting your companion still holding on to the Ogre's expansive back. The tainted abomination tries to move away, to avoid your blow, but it is no use. Your weapon slams right on target, all the power you can coax out of your muscles going into this one overwhelming strike.

The Ogre's kneecap shatters, and its leg snaps in two. The Ogre's bone tears through its skin, exploding outward in a shower of shrapnel. Only a few strings of sinew keep the creature's leg connected to the rest of its body. It hardly even resembles a limb, anymore. It looks more like a piece of pulverized meat, raw and bloody.

The Ogre howls in pain and tumbles forward, its balance utterly ruined. The Nezumi takes this opportunity to leap off to safety. She really needn't have bothered. The Ogre is finished. It crawls weakly on the ground, clutching at nothing. Blood is rushing out of its ruined leg like a river, filling the air with a metallic scent. The beast whimpers pitifully, trying to get away.

You smash your tetsubo onto its neck, and there is a horrible cracking sound. The creature's body shudders briefly, and then stops. The Ogre lies still.

The fight is over. You have won.
