Sincerity Roll: 4k3=22
You glance at Yasuki Goro, but the man does not say anything in response. The question was directed at you, and as such you must be the one to answer it. However, that would not keep your Lord from interjecting if he felt there was need. Your chest tightens at this expression of his trust, that he believes you capable of standing for yourself when confronted with a question as piercing as this one.
And piercing it is, but deceptively so. On the front of it the query is frank, but you can see several ways that your answer could be turned against you. The myriad ways your words could be twisted almost boggles your mind, and you'd have never considered any of this before your journey. That you do now is a testament to your growth.
"Require, Togashi-san?" you ask. "Need? These are words that mean different things on different lips. As such, they are tools I myself am ill-suited to wield. Instead, I will tell you what is."
Kohaku nods. "Life must be accepted as it is if we are to make progress, and perhaps even change." He motions a hand toward you. "Please, share with me your insights into the world."
"The enemy is coming," you say. "The surge that we saw at the Battle of Skulking Shadows showed a level of strategic skill and control that were impressive for the hordes of the Shadowlands. Whatever general it was who did this, we did not kill him on that day. If such a one as that had faced us on the field of battle and fallen, we would know."
"We have heard of this battle," Aoko says. "A heavy incursion unlike anything seen in decades." She tilts her head slightly to the side, giving you a questioning look. "But I have also heard that while there has been more activity, it has been less directed. Might this general have lost interest?"
"Pardon me, Togashi-san, but that just isn't how these things work," you respond. "Beings like that do not simply go away. Instead, they wait, and they bide, and they accumulate power and resources so that they may strike again. He has seen that the Battle of Skulking Shadows was not enough to overwhelm us. You can be assured that the next assault will be worse."
"It has been almost two years that battle," Hiroshi interjects. "I suppose that would be enough time to gather strength, should this general desire to continue seeking bloodshed."
"Indeed," Kohaku says. "But the Crab held strong in the Battle of Skulking Shadows, and did so in no small part thanks to your efforts. That is the most prominent trait of your Clan, to endure. Do you feel that perhaps you will be unable to bear what you believe is to come? The Crab have always withstood before, and I doubt they would find themselves lacking now."
You keep yourself from frowning, but it's a near thing. Kohaku has managed to shift your words in such a way that you are just a few steps away from calling your own Clan weak. However, you cannot detect any scorn in the monk's voice. The question was likely not asked with malicious intentions, but rather genuine curiosity.
Be that as it may, however, it still leaves you in a bit of a bind. You wished to hold to the usual rallying cry of your Clan, that the enemy approaches and all must be made aware of the danger. However, with but a few words Kohaku has turned the Crab's own strength against itself here. This tactic will not suffice, and you doubt you're clever enough to couch the same argument in a way that won't suffer similar results.
So you decide to avoid attempting verbal ingenuity you don't have, and instead be completely blunt with your feelings.
"I would not so insult my brothers and sisters on the wall as to say that we cannot hold," you reply. "The question is not whether or not we will fail in our duty without your jade, but how many more lives those battles will cost... how many fewer of us there will be still standing on the walls when the coming storm is over. I will not tell you that we need your jade. I will simply say that we will die without it."
Kohaku blinks at your stark frankness, rubbing his beard in thought. "So you wish for this jade not for victory, but for life." He nods thoughtfully. "Interesting words, Hiruma-san. Very interesting indeed."
