Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

Could we have an etiquette check on this one please?

Depends on the features. Scars, for example, are totally fine here. It might be different if Sosuke and Shirou weren't friends, but they are so it's pretty alright. Even more, Sosuke is a Crab Bushi and Shirou is an Osano-Wo Monk. Talking about scars doesn't seem so strange all.

The only possible issue might be if one of those scars was made from before he joined the Brotherhood of Shinsei, because as mentioned in the update it's rather rude to question Monks about life before they were initiated into their respective orders.

Cool. Given the nature of his monastery, his age, and how long it takes to get to the level he's at, the assumption that they are monkly scars is not unreasonable, so in the unlikely event that we are being somewhat rude, it's obviously unintentional, and with the phrasing that we're giving, he has plenty of wiggle room to deflect with. Let's do this thing.

[x] That is a rather impressive set of scars you got there Shirou-san, certainly a match and more to many of the warriors I have known. Is the life of a monk really that exciting?

You consider for a few moments. Shirou said before that he journeyed to Shinden Osano-Wo at a young age to join their order. He's not that much older than you, so that means most of those scars undoubtedly came after his admittance. That being the case, it can't be too troublesome if you asked about his scars, right?

Besides, you're a Bushi of the Hida School. Just a glance at your body reveals your own set of scars, perfectly visible considering you're naked. There's a story for every one of those marks on your flesh… Like that one on your leg where that goblin tore a piece out of you, the little bastard. Smashing that one's head in had been particularly satisfying.

Shirou likely has similar tales behind his own scars, and for all that you consider the monk a comrade you must admit you don't know too much about him. He's always going along with whatever you decide, showing no complaint. Perhaps it is time you truly got to know the man you call friend?

"That is a rather impressive set of scars you got there Shirou-san," you say, grinning. "Certainly a match and more to many of the warriors I have known. Is the life of a monk really that exciting?"

"Oh, quite often," he replies, still scrubbing his skin. "Shinden Osano-Wo rests just outside of the Scorpion Clan's western border. Bandits and other unsavory people often attempt to ambush caravans journeying north or south from there."

"So your temple acts as guardians of the Scorpion's western border?" you ask, frowning. "That seems awfully lazy of them, leaving that work to you."

"We don't see it that way," Shirou says, stretching out a leg like a tree trunk to lather it up. "Life is to be lived and experienced, and in that experiencing we should help others. If we, the strong, can provide aid then we are using our strength well."

"That's a fine way to live life, from where I sit," you reply, nodding. "But surely you have some stories behind all those scars? I hope I'm not prying, but I was wondering if you might share a few."

"Hmm… Well, I don't see why not," Shirou said. He stretched out his left arm and flexed, revealing several small marks on his bicep that went up to his shoulder. "This was from a bandit we stopped from assaulting a merchant's caravan. His parangu shattered against my arm, and the shards embedded themselves in my flesh."

You wince. "That sounds incredibly painful, my friend."

"It was not pleasant, to be sure," Shirou responds, smiling. "But it stopped the bandit from killing an innocent man, so I consider it a worthy reminder." He points to his outstretched leg, motioning to a long gash. "This is where a Kappa's beak tore into me as I attempted to prevent it from murdering a Unicorn Samurai."

"A Kappa?" you ask, thinking of those strange, turtle-like creatures. "You were near a river then?"

"Indeed I was," he answers. "The River of Gold, and the creature almost dragged me into it before I managed to rip the bowl off its head." He chuckles. "It was a near thing, to be sure. I wouldn't have fancied my chances of overcoming a Kappa while in the water."

"Did you save the Unicorn Samurai?" you ask.

"Oh, that was an illusion brought on by the Kappa," the monk answers. "I was its target the entire time."

"I see," you say, returning to your scrubbing. "Truly, they are tricky beings."

"Indeed they are," Shirou says. He moves his hand down to his hip, where there is a small mark. It's faded, barely there at all, but you can still see a faint discoloration. "And here… Ah, I haven't thought about this one in a long time."

"What is it?" you ask.

"It's where my father stitched up my wound after I fell from a tree onto a sharp rock," he says, smiling wistfully. "It happened while I was just a child, traveling with him."

Shirou looks at the scar with nostalgia in his eyes, so distracted he doesn't see your wince. You've touched on territory you were trying to avoid. Your friend doesn't seem offended, however. If anything, he appears lost in thought.

[] Ask about Shirou's father.
[] Finish your bath and head to court.

[X] Finish your bath and head to court.

This is cool stuff, but we're on a time limit. We can revisit it later.

Should we pry about his father?

That looks like being "life before brotherhood" territory. Also, kind of awkward.

[X] Finish your bath and head to court.

For a brief moment you consider asking Shirou about his father. Your friend said he traveled with him, which strikes you as odd considering peasants aren't allowed such free movement within the Empire. Could Shirou's father have been a Samurai, then?

But then your curiosity passes. There is little time for such things now, and the question would be rude in any case. At least, you think it would be so. You and Shirou have grown quite close over the last several months. Would he truly take offense if you asked him directly about his childhood?

You shake your head, ridding yourself of the thought. Court will be in session soon, and you must be there when it begins. Everything else is secondary to your duty.

The next several minutes pass swiftly as you finish scrubbing, wash yourself off and take a quick soak in the tub. Shirou joins you, of course, but aside from some small talk there is no further conversation of real note. Soon enough you are out of the bath and back in your quarters, putting on your best hakama and kimono.

Granted, that isn't saying much. Both articles of clothing are unadorned and simple, save for your Clan and School mon emblazoned on the kimono. It is a utilitarian outfit, but it will serve you will considering the duty you must uphold. You belt your swords and tetsubo, and then make your exit.

Yasuki Goro is waiting for you in the hall as you step outside, closing the door to his room. His own is the same color as your own, blue and black, but of far better quality. It is made of fine silk, shining in the light, and he wears a fine black haori over it all. In his crossed arms he holds a folded fan, which he taps on the inside of his elbow as he looks at you.

"Good," he says. "I see you have prepared. Let us be off, then."

A servant leads you up two flights of stairs and toward a large set of doors. Emblazoned on them is the mon for the Kitsuki Family, the symbol crafted of gold and the eyes of the Dragon made from emeralds. It is, frankly, almost shocking in its opulence. It's the most ostentatious thing you've seen while staying here, aside from the hot spring.

The Servant opens the doors, revealing a large room set with a long table in the middle. The Mons of both the Dragon and the Kitsuki are set within it, so deep and black they looked part of the table itself rather than painted ornamentation. At the far end is a small throne crafted of dark wood with silver inlaid at the rests.

A lean, older man sits there looking at you with strikingly keen eyes. His short-cropped beard is black mixed with grey, and his temples bear similar colors. The man's age, however, does nothing to take away from the whipcord strength you detect in his frame. This is, without doubt, Kitsuki Ryojiro, the daimyo of the Kitsuki Family.

"It is my pleasure to introduce the honorable Yasuki Goro-sama, of the esteemed Crab Clan," the servant calls out. "Along with his escort, the honorable Hiruma Sosuke-sama!"

"My greetings to you, Kitsuki-sama," Yasuki Goro says, bowing to the Daimyo. "And my most sincere thanks for the hospitality you have shown us."

You join your superior in bowing, and as you rise you notice that you are not the only ones in the room. There are several groups lingering about, conversing with themselves and observing the others. Many do not seem to be of the Dragon Clan, however. They glance at you as you come in, but swiftly return to their own business.

"No thanks are necessary, Yasuki-san," Ryojiro responds, his voice surprisingly soft. It carries across the room well enough despite that, however. "It must never be said that the Dragon are poor hosts."

"If such lies are ever spoken, they will not be from my lips, Kitsuki-sama," Yasuki Goro says. "My time here within your lands has been nothing but the definition of satisfying."

"Then I am glad, Yasuki-san," Ryojiro replies. "We shall begin in but a few moments." He waves a hand at the room. "Please, take your ease."

"I shall do so gratefully, Kitsuki-sama," your lord says back, bowing again. A motion you join him in. "Thank you."

The pleasantries finished, you have a chance to properly look about the room. There are a number of Samurai here, mostly comprised of various Families of the Dragon. You see straight-backed Mirumoto looking around the room with sharp eyes, hands near their swords. Hanabi is among them, and she smiles at you so widely she almost lights up the room. There are, of course, Kitsuki about, and you even notice a few of the Togashi Tattooed Monks in the corner.

But as you noticed earlier, there are other groups as well. Five Samurai in bright orange and yellow stand together, three of them obviously Yojimbo. You cannot see the other two past them, though from the way the bodyguards are standing they must be people of some import. That makes them a large contingent, and rather well guarded. Perhaps they are more than mere diplomats?

Near them, you see two people in light blue and silver colors. A beautiful woman with white hair is standing next to a rather stern looking fellow who is making sure to always have a hand near his sword. He's trying to look everywhere at once, and doing a fairly good job of it. His charge, meanwhile, merely smiles behind an upraised fan. These would be members of the Crane Clan, and you can't help a scowl at their presence.

On the other side of the room are three people in black and red, each of them wearing masks. Only one of them appears to be a Yojimbo, however, with the other two wearing only wakazashi as befits their status as Samurai. The apparent leader of the group, a tall man with short hair framing a pointed face, has his eyes firmly locked on the Crane contingent.

And finally, there stand three people wearing brown and yellow. One of them is Kitsu Himawari, and she is speaking with a short, animated woman who is chuckling and nodding at the Shugenja's words. The diplomat's bodyguard is a woman just as tall as you are, and by her appearance even more muscled. She's doing her level best to glare at everyone in the room, and you get the impression she doesn't wish to be here. Considering Lion temperaments, this might be because of the presence of the Scorpion and the Crane.

Or she could just always be in a bad mood. It's hard to tell sometimes just what will annoy the Lion, specifically the Matsu. They just always seem ready to yell at someone. That, or hit them.

"So, Sosuke-san," Yasuki Goro whispers. "I would know your thoughts. Shall we speak a while with our fellow guests, or should we simply sit at the table and wait for Kitsuki-sama to begin the proceedings?"

[] Suggest approaching one of the groups. (Pick one.)
[] Suggest just sitting at the table for now.
[] Write in.

Can we get an Etiquette roll to know how much time we're likely to have here before things start, given that Kitsuki Ryojiro said "We shall begin in but a few moments"? I wouldn't have thought that we would have enough time for a meaningful conversation with anyone unless that was some kind of standard meaningless line meaning "soonish but not right away".

Also, are any of the other groups present interacting with one another? The way they're described it doesn't seem like there's any socialization between clan groups- "There are several groups lingering about, conversing with themselves and observing the others" would imply that the groups are not conversing except internally.

While normally I would see this as an opportunity to make contacts and feel out the others for possible mutual support in our goals moving forward, given the circumstances- seemingly low amounts of time available and a marked lack of mingling- I suspect that it may not be the socially appropriate time and Yasuki Goro is testing us to see if we've picked up on that fact.

Hmmm.......

Ok, as a new face in Court, this first set of moves will reflect on- Ok, fuck it.

We're here to speak to Dragons, we've an in with Hanabi, and we're Crab. Charge! Tesubo held High!

Sure.

Etiquette Roll: 6k3=21

From what you know and can gather, Kitsuki Ryojiro is basically using polite speak to say "Out of respect for you, I'm allowing you some time to converse with a few of your peers here before session officially begins." You also know that this is court, so that means socialization has happened here. This isn't so much a guess as an inevitability. It's just very likely that the various diplomats expected the official session to start soon and decided to speak within their own groups for a little bit before it began. It's not too unusual.

Not to mention that among the assembled Clans the Crane, Scorpion and the Lion don't really care for each other. This sort of thing doesn't require a Lore roll because, well, pretty much everyone in the Empire knows it. They'd likely have already spoken a bit briefly, maybe tested each other a bit, then broke off to converse with each other.

It does strike you as strange that the Phoenix have such a large delegation, however. They're not known for getting heavily involved in courtly matters, though they've certainly been more active in recent years with their absorption of the Tiger Minor Clan as the Yotsu Family.

Hmm...

A large Phoenix delegation...

Absorption of the Tiger clan...

Is this some sort of extra protection to their clan representative in this court? I'm guessing some are not liking the fact a minor clan got absorbed, or perhaps there's something else...

Well since our squid overlord seem to be on vacation...

[x] Suggest approaching one of the groups.(The Lion)
-Greet Kitsu Hinawari
-Make smalltalk and attempt to see what they are here for and gather a bit of info about the other delegations. As a storyteller she must have some insight.

Let's poke the yan a bit shall we? :drevil:

At this point, everything sends a signal. *everything*. It is worth considering what signal various actions would send, and to whom. In particular, the Dragon courtiers are known for their tests. Kitsuki Ryojiro has offered us this short moment partially as a way of being genteel and in general a good host. More, though, he's offered it to us as a way of seeing what we do with it.

First thought - this is not a time to generate confrontations. We are here to sell the idea that all of Rokugan must gather together as one to defend ourselves against a terrible threat. Any significant disagreements that we allow ourselves to be drawn into undercut that argument. It is quite possible, for example, that the Crane will attack us socially at some point... but if so, it is very much in our best interest to let them throw the first punch in this one. Actually, it is likely in our best interest to not descend to their level even then. If we can simply stand and behave well in the face of inexplicable Crane aggression, the Scorpion will be only too willing to slip in the knife into their backs while their front is facing our way.

Given that we just don't like them very much, we likely want to avoid interacting with the Crane any more than we have to until/unless they start moving against us, or make other movements that would give us reason to interact.

Similarly, approaching the Scorpion is a bad idea. We are allied with them, and they with us... but they work in secrets and shadows, and there is absolutely nothing to be gained by letting everyone *else* know our relationship prior to their opening strike.

Approaching the Lion for right now is a poor choice. Sending Mirumoto Hanabi from dere-dere into yan-yan right now does us potentially quite a bit of harm, and no good. It is possible that at some point we'd be well-served by her going all nutbar, but that's for after the gloves come off in a *very* big way. Also, it might look like a bit of aligning with them... which could serve us poorly with the Crane (and possibly even the Scorpion). We'll want to talk with them later, though. There are sure to be breaks.

Approaching the Mirumoto is a less bad idea, but it still has potential pitfalls. For the moment, it seems likely that we have Matsu Himawari's good opinion... and we don't necessarily wish to annoy her. More to the point, though, it would be putting the personal above the clan. There is little to be *gained* by speaking with the Mirumoto, at least for right now, and they're playing yojimbo, so it would be distracting them from their duties... which is kind of rude.

We could talk with the Kitsu, but it feels... off to me. We don't really know any of them personally, and their Diamyo is about to talk with us himself. Why would we seek their counsel when he's about to give us his personal attention?

Approaching the Togashi is at least neutral. It doesn't get us all that much in the way of influence (probably), but it's appropriately respectful to the Dragon clan, it doesn't tread on any toes, and "Hey, I'm in the dragon lands with a bit of time to burn - let's seek enlightenment" is an eminently defensible activity, given that there's no particular *acknowledged* importance to what we're doing now.

For the phoenix? I really have *no* idea. I don't know enough about the current relationship between the phoenix and everyone else, and, more to the point, I *really* don't know who's over there. Also, we're so very not shugenja. We *have* come across some interesting information on our travels, but we wouldn't be spending it here, we're mostly intending to save it for the Kuni, and we don't know that they'd care. We don't have any reason to believe that they'd have any real reason to care about what we might say.

For staying by ourselves? Well, he's given us this opportunity. If the courtier we were escorting was more straightforward, I could see the duty/get down to business schtick working out okay, but Yasuki Goro just isn't that guy. Given the chance to schmooze, he really ought to be schmoozing with *someone*.

[x] Suggest approaching one of the groups (the Togashi)
-[x] It's usefully neutral for an opening move, and respects the Clan of the host. Politically, it will do no harm, might do some good, and worst case scenario, they might have an interesting lesson or two to share. We can open discussions with the other clans once we have seen their initial positions a bit better.
