There are others who know the subject matter quite well, and I am by no means always right. I welcome any disagreements anyone might have with any of my points, and any thoughts anyone might have on things I might have missed.

Still, I do like to provide what service I can in these matters.

Well I dont know the subject much and any guidance is not only welcome but needed :p God knows how many times I would have proposed and voted for bad to terrible actions in various quests if more knowlegable players have not reigned me in.

You consider your Lord's question for a few moments. Right now, in this place, everything you do will have an impact on future events. This goes far beyond the more personal settings you've been in amongst the Scorpion and the Lion. This is a proper court, with representatives from several Clans at once in attendance.

That means there are interplays here, and even with your burgeoning skills you doubt you see their full depth. However, you can see easily enough that the wrong move could weaken your Lord's position. Going to the Scorpion would be one such move, for though you have forged an alliance with them it is… secret, at least for now. It is best to not reveal that too soon.

The Crane, of course, are not really an option. There is too much bad blood between your Clans, and frankly you're not sure you could stand conversing with them. No doubt they're going to attempt some trickery later, but for now it is better to let them make the first move.

The Lion would be an acceptable choice, but Hanabi is in the room. You think back to her reaction yesterday, about how you barely managed to keep a duel from breaking out. If interacting with the Lion, and by association Himawari, might cause another incident… Well, best to just avoid such things.

You briefly consider the Phoenix Samurai, for they would be a rather neutral choice. You discard it, however. You don't know much about them, and frankly you're not sure they'd be too amenable to your Clan's needs right now at any rate. They're pacifists, or at least claim to be. The Crab is anything but, and out of sheer necessity. That creates a difficulty in finding common ground.

So there's really only one choice, by your figuring.

"I recommend the Togashi, Yasuki-sama," you respond, your voice soft. "It respects the host, and also avoids any potential issues amongst the other diplomats if we interacted with one of their groups."

"Hmmm. Not a bad option," Yasuki Goro says back. "Sound reasoning. Not quite as bold as I expected of you, but it is not a poor choice." He nods. "Well, let us get to it."

Your superior walks across the room, and you follow just one step behind. A few eyes from the other groups follow your progress as you make your way to the Togashi, but none approach. They appear to be feigning disinterest, as far as you can tell, and that suits you fine.

The three Togashi monks bow as you approach, and both you and Yasuki Goro bow back. Two of them are men, both quite large and muscular. The last is a woman, who while shorter is no less well built than her companions. Though their robes are of decent quality, they lack sleeves and are open at the chest. Only a wrap maintains the woman's modesty, but that does not catch your eye as much as the tattoos.

Each of them holds at least two, from what you can see. One of the men has four on his chest and arms, each of different shapes. Several seem to blend into each other, but you don't have time to really look at the markings with any real detail. It would be rude to stare, after all.

"My greetings, honored Yasuki-san, honored Hiruma-san," the woman says as she rises. "I am Togashi Aoko, and I welcome you to our lands."

"I cannot deny the pleasure I feel at your Clan's hospitality, Togashi-san," Yasuki Goro replies. "Though isolated in these cold mountains, you greet travelers with open arms!"

"All are welcome as they make their way along the journey of life," one of the men says. "I am Togashi Hiroshi, and I hope this day finds you well."

"It does so far, though the day has hardly even begun," Yasuki Goro responds. "It is my hope that I reach the end of it with equal or greater satisfaction."

"And perhaps with Jade?" the last monk asks. He strokes a thin beard and mustache with a hand, observing your superior closely. "I believe that this is why you have come to our lands, is it not?"

"My Clan does indeed hold an interest in Jade, for rather obvious reasons," your Lord answers. "And it is certainly something I hope to speak with Kitsuki Ryojiro-sama about before the day is done."

"A precious substance, Jade is. Such a pity that it must so often be used for war, but there is no avoiding reality. It is simply something that must be adapted to, just as the flowing river finds its way past all obstacles," the monk says. "You can not command the elements any more than you can command the stars in heaven. You must learn to hear the music of the celestial chorus. Once that is done, you must learn to dance."

"Your words resound with great wisdom," Yasuki Goro says. "Would that be from the Tao of Shinsei?"

"It would indeed," the monk replies. "Please forgive me, for I have not introduced myself. I am Togashi Kohaku."

"There is nothing to forgive, Togashi-san," Yasuki Goro replies. "In fact, I find myself in your debt for sharing with me such inspiring words!"

"There is no debt, Yasuki-san," Kohaku replies. "For knowledge is a treasure to be shared with all." The monk looks at you. "And I would ask for such a treasure of you, Hiruma-san, if you would grant it."

You look to your Lord, who nods his ascent. "I will answer I am able, Togashi-san, though I'm afraid I am not knowledgeable in much beyond battle."

"But that is precisely why I must ask this of you," he responds. "I have heard tales of your travels, of the glory you have won. I would hear the answer to this question from you, who fights on the front lines. Does your Clan truly require the Jade we have discovered?" He inhales deeply. "Our land still bears scars from the war with the Unicorn, and the madness of Moto Shinichiro. This Jade could aid us greatly with further recovery. So it is that I find myself curious as to the Crab's pressing need of it now."

They don't understand, they can't not really without going to the Wall and that they don't is...well not their fault probably.

"Hai, do not think me unsympathetic, when the Hiruma lands themselves still lie fallow, to want to help your home, to see it rebuild, to see it grow. That is a dream that all of us in the Hiruma nurse in our hearts, as do the Kuni, the Hida, the Yasuki and the Toritaka. " Deep breath.

"Yet when Jade is the only thing that allows me to go out into the Hiruma lands and fight for it, and fight to get it back, of course we have need of it. But that is not why our need now is so great. When the Battle of the Skulking Shadows erupted, we were taken aback, they were organized, it was only at great cost..and courage that we beat them back. That intelligence hasn't gone away, they will come again. For that our bushi need Jade, Jade to fight that which must be fought at all costs."

I would suggest making a bit more urgent. Just hinting that there is someone behind it and may or may not come back is too vague I think? State outright that we expect another even bigger incursion soon and additional Jade would be of the essense.

That, and perhaps shorten the bit about Hiruma lands? Being sympathetic is fine, but focusing on it while showing our need for jade might not be the best idea.

Hiruma Sousuke found himself on his knees. Looking at the Elf, Bidashal...that was his name. Hurt to think, hurt to breathe.

"...I admit, for a human you have remarkable will." Bidashal said striding forward.

Even on his knees Sousuke still could look directly into his eyes, the Crab glared menacingly.

"But this is the end, your friends are broken, your armor shattered, and you can't even stand." The elf continued.

With inhuman grace he placed the palm of his hand against Sousuke's forehead.

"Still for your courage, I will grant you a quick deat---"

The explosion that blew them apart should have killed Sousuke. As it was he flew back, landing hard against a wall. What? The painful fog around his mind throbbed.

Focus the pain will pass, let it flow around you
Words unbidden from his sensei come back, with effort her forces himself to look. What he sees mesmerizes him.

There standing on a broken leg, holding a faintly sparkling wand, Louise Francoise la Blanc de La Valliere, glared with murderous intent at the elf. Her clothes are torn, her hair partly burned off, her body shaking on adrenaline and rage.

Sousuke notes distantly that she hasn't been this attractive since she stabbed that traitor Wardes in the face.
Another more immediate part is busy calling him a pansy ass Crane and to move Fortunes Dammit! Slowly an aching body begins to respond.

Bidashal stood up, holding his side.
His spell, his defense gone? What? His eyes narrow on the strawberry blond girl pointing one of this silly wands at him.

She must have...done something...void magic?
Yes of course, that's why she never did anything earlier, she couldn't.

The Elf shook off his shock, and raised his hand, another Fire Stone in it.
"That was a mistake human"

With that another massive flame fills the room, the same one that had broken Kirche's own flame.

Louise snarls swinging her wand like a sword, and the flame shatters, cut into a thousand pieces.

The elf's eyes widen a fraction, alright that was unexpected. But no matter, he had more stones, and this girl was clearly running on fumes.

Digging into his pouch he pulls out another fire stone. Again he raises his hand, again the world burns as it should, again Louise destroys it like so much trash.

Bidashal frowns.
Well then lets see how you handle this monster

This time he withdraws two fire stones and lets the world explode. Louise whips her wand in sword motions trying desperately to cut it down to size.

She fails, and she can feel her skin cook.

Her leg gives out, and she stumbles. Louise looks up defiantly, as Bidashel lets his customary neutral face drop back in place.

"A valiant effort, but all for naught."

Louise smiles her head rolling.
"Not for nothing"

"Eh?"

That eloquent word was the last thing Bidashal said before Hiruma Sousuke drove a club of broken masonry through his skull. As the elf fell so did Sousuke, his duty done, and finally he could rest for just a...few...moments.

Louise grimaced, and ignored the pain in her own body, to drag herself inch by inch to Sousuke.

He wasn't breathing.

"No..."

The Wall did not Fall, but the Wall was never just one man, one man falls all too easily.

"No" her hands reach out to Sousuke.

Louise searches for something, anything, that could save him.
Anything that could save the strange, crazy foreigner that she had dragged into this mess.
Anything that could save the man she had come to love.

Yet there was nothing, no healing agents, no stupid busty elves with fantastic magic to save him.
Just her, alone in a burning castle with Sousuke.

Tears stream down Louise's face.
"I love you Sousuke, you can't die, you just...can't. I need you." she whispers.

Sousuke says nothing, just laying there, his body cooling even with the flames around them.

"Come on, you'll wake up now, you're too tough to die like this...you have to wake up." She says her voice warbling.

"Wake up." her voice sounds pathetic even to her.

"Please...wake up" Louise whispers.

Nothing, Louise can feel the chains around her heart wrapping tight, tight enough to shatter. She had thought the greatest pain she had ever felt was when Wardes betrayed her. Now she could only laugh at the stupidity of her past self. Whatever pain that had been...it was nothing compared to this. Nothing to this jagged emptiness in her heart.

Slowly Louise manages to push him over to face up. A part of her wants to just lay on top of him, and let the castle burn down around her. But that isn't what Sousuke would have wanted, that isn't, that isn't what he would do. And she would be damned, damned to the deepest Elven hells there were before she failed him.

The lump in her throat is forced back, Louise bends over his face, and brushes the hair off of it. She has to go soon, but she could do this much.

"Good by Sousuke...kun, that's what they call lovers in your land right? We never were, but...Brimir, I wish we had been, Brimir I wish we had been." Louise says softly.

On some distant level, she knows she's kissing a corpse and that's incredibly messed up. But the more emotional part of her is going to get one damn kiss with the man she loved. Crawling over, she kisses Sousuke's form on the lips.

Sousuke groans, in pain, as his right hand glows, and his spirit finds itself thrown back into it's body. The Contract is now Sealed and he will not escape it that easily. Burning metal flows through his veins, and he can faintly see a lightning bolt as he finds himself jerked back to the land of the living.

Louise stares at him with wide eyes.

"Sousuke-kun?" She says her voice disbelieving.

"Louise-sama" Sousuke replies.

His brain helpfully tells him to ignore the kun thing for now.

"You're alive..."

"Hai"

Sousuke has seen many strange things today. Louise clinging to his neck babbling about how she lost him, still managed to draw a gasp of surprise.

"Louise-sama, we have to go." He manages to get out.

She nods into his shirt, but makes no move to let go. Remembering at last that her leg was broken, and feeling oddly invigorated by the burning metal in his veins, Sousuke realizes he has to carry her. Slowly standing to his tired feet, he begins to walk out of the burning castle.

As they leave, Louise finally, calms down, warning him of bad paths thanks to her academic knowledge.

It's not until they get out, and they collapse onto Tabitha's dragon, that Louise allows herself to pass out.

But not before saying three simple words.

"I love you"

Looking down at his charge...Sousuke realizes he has no idea what to do about that.

Thank the Fortunes she was asleep to give him a chance to figure this out.
Even if his brain seemed to be defaulting to. 'You are on your own'

Tabitha concentrates on controlling the wind dragon...but allows a ghost of a smile.
Kirche had a good idea after all.

To respond to @Eliar and @Brandark

The reason I was vague was because we don't really have any proof, a few bad dreams sure, but while those dreams are powerful, they don't mean something now, we're just a bushi, not a shugenja or mystic that can accurately interpret these dreams. So lacking proof, we just have the same Spiel the Crab have spouted for centuries and people have learned to tune out.

To answer your second question Eliar,
This is part of an omake series premised on the concept of Hiruma Sousuke in Zero no Tsukaima if you look on the index there's a few more snips about this starting with Sousuke being summoned. Even if the one previous has not currently been archived I believe it's around the Tea House with Phoenix Iroh on page 119 or so.

[x] Require, Togashi-san? Need? These are words that mean different things on different lips. As such, they are tools I myself am ill-suited to wield. Instead, I will tell you what is. The enemy is coming. The surge that we saw at the Battle of Skulking Shadows showed a level of strategic skill and control that were impressive for the hordes of the Shadowlands. Whatever general it was who did this, we did not kill him on that day. If such a one as that had faced us on the field of battle and fallen, we would know. At the same time, his mark has not been on the scattered attacks that have come since then. Beings like that do not simply go away. Instead, they wait, and they bide, and they accumulate power and resources so that they may strike again. He has seen that the Battle of Skulking Shadows was not enough to overwhelm us. You can be assured that the next assault will be worse.
[x] As for our ability to hold against it... I would not so insult my brothers and sisters on the wall as as to say that we cannot hold. The question is not whether or not we will fail in our duty without your jade, but how many more lives those battles will cost... how many fewer of us there will be still standing on the walls when the coming storm is over. I will not tell you that we need your jade. I will simply say that we will die without it.

For those of you who enjoy analyses on this sort of thing, the reasoning behind my write-in as follows:

- Start off by evading the "require/need" thing. It's a trap. The dragon are all about disassembling your arguments logically, and logically, any argument of "need" can be undermined. At the same time, we get to double down on the "I am but a simple crab bushi - unsuited for these strange games of court." It basically gives us a bit of cover for... well, for all sorts of things. Lowering the standards by which we are judged socially is all to the good - and our record (and the Glory we've gained from it) protects us on the other side. We're clearly doing the hard part of being a Crab Bushi, so it's not unreasonable for us to ask for the perks.

- We then plunge into the meat of our argument - that Bad Things Are Coming. This is the part that we actually want to sell people on. We use appeal to logic (which is particularly effective on the Dragon) and to military expertise (which the Dragon has already granted us) to paint a fairly convincing argument that one or more major attacks are coming. So far as I can see, there's no real way to undercut this bit without turning around and saying "Actually, I've decided that I don't trust the expert testimony of the guy I went to for expert testimony". It comes at a bit of a cost - we're being perhaps too blunt for court, and we're openly discussing the shadowlands. We have some cover for that, though. Monks are generally more accepting of bluntness than courtiers, the discussion was already more or less about the Shadowlands (we just brought it a bit further out in the open) and the whole thing fits neatly under "I am but a simple Crab Bushi."

- The last bit is, again, avoiding traps. It sidesteps the "By claiming you need this, you insult your brethren." trap, it sidesteps the "Are you saying you can't do your duty?" trap, it even sidesteps the "Are you saying you're afraid to die honorably?" trap. It claims no moral imperative - it simply states that the price of not providing jade will be counted in Crab lives, and puts them in the place of concluding either that there is real need, or that Crab lives are less important than whatever else they'd do with the money. It also, more subtly, underlines the bit where our clan is constantly warring against an implacable foe, while the warriors of other clans spend much of their time on garrison duty, or perhaps going after the occasional bandit.

Mostly, this write-in is about not leaving openings. It has some potentially potent emotional kick to it, but it carefully avoids overstretching our actual level of skill (which is not terrible, but not all that good compared to the other people currently in the room.)
