Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

Hence why I'm saying this goes into shadowruns territory. Whoever did this is being really clever since he/she already got what he/she might have been looking for.

There's no way to prove my claims, however. Not until said person shows up in the future.

Or well, more healthier is to think Hanabi did this all by herself, and her superiors are pulling a clever batman gambit here.
Eh? Maybe.

The thing is, we don't have to be the one to unravel this particular shadowrun. We report to Yasuki Goro, who is *completely awesome* at this sort of thing (being himself just the sort of medium-to-high-insight courtier who can and does pull this sort of thing off). We just meet with him this evening, and pass on what we have noticed, and what has occurred to us. He gets to know who Hanabi is. (While Sousuke may not quite grasp her degree and variety of crazy, he absolutely will.) He finds out that maybe her superiors are trying to set us up. Maybe they are not. If they make any pushes in that direction, then, he'll be prepared, and he'll know that they are more invested in them than they'll pretend at first. That sort of data is like tiny nuggets of gold to a man like Yasuki Goro. They weigh very little - but pile a few of them together and you can start to swing around a surprising amount of financial influence.

If he's rank 5, then knowing that they want it just gets sweeter... and if he happens to have taken the Yasuki Extortionist replacement for Rank 4, then the fact that he's in direct command of Mirumoto Hanabi's heart's price gives him... well, it gives the man some options.

There's another poss, when it comes to why they'd set her up.

She seems to have control issues, and some serious attachment to us. They could be deleberately arranging to send her with the trouble magnet to get her killed in a glorious manner, that will reflect well on the Clan. A bloodthirsty psycho on the Wall, could work well, although probly not for long.
The Crab have a long and storied tradition of berserkers. She's not exactly tuned for it, but... yeah. You're not wrong.

The Crab have a long and storied tradition of making use of almost ANY resource vs the Shadowlands even "ponies" - a resonably skilled Mirumoto Niten would be useful. It's just a matter of determining how tough she is mentally before deciding to use her on the Wall or elsewhere.

-[x] With one thing and another you never told me what you do here Hanabi-San. What duties do you perform? How do you pass your days?

Discussing/reporting the various possibilities to Yasuki is also the kind of thing that would probably make him respect us when more.

The Crab can really use samurai who look like a walking stereotype but also have keen political instincts and the wisdom to ask their superiors about how to use them.

Well, sure. That's also pretty much our schtick by this point (along with being a walking trouble-magnet). The amount of political hay that Yasuki Goro has managed to make off of us thus far (and set up to take advantage of later) has been pretty impressive.

"Her thoughts are her own," you reply. "As our thoughts are ours. Such is just the way of things."

You put Himawari out of your mind, for now, and observe Hanabi. She's still staring after the Lion woman as she turns the corner, a frown on her face. It's a better expression than that smile she had earlier, though it still worries you. The Dragon woman does not seem… Well, she doesn't appear to be the most stable of people.

But what exactly are you going to do about that? Do you even have to do anything? Hanabi appears to be enamored with you, though you're not certain how deep this infatuation goes. More to the point, it's not something you've ever had to deal with before. You've no real precedent to draw upon to aid in making decisions.

Which means you're going to have to make things up as you go along and pray it all works out. That, and probably report to Yasuki Goro. He should have some idea of what to do with this strange woman who seems to have attached herself to you, or is trying to at any rate. In the meantime, best keep things calm and continue the conversation.

"So, Mirumoto-san," you say, drawing her attention back to you. She smiles, and you repress a shudder remembering when that smile hid barely contained violence. "With all the distractions I fear I never asked what it is you do here. If I may be so bold, would you mind telling me what duties you perform? How do you pass your days, Mirumoto-san?"

"Oh, it's not trouble at all, Hiruma-san!" Hanabi replies, smile widening. "As a Mirumoto, I am a part of the Dragon Clan's armies. I'm barracked here at Shiro Kitsuki, like many of the Family are. This is one of the primary entrances deeper into our territory, after all, and it's our main diplomatic center."

"So you spend your days patrolling and training, I take it?" you ask. "Please forgive my ignorance, but I'm not sure what else there is to do here. I didn't see anything else but the castle when I crossed the bridge."

"Oh, that's because the city is on the other side of the fortress," Hanabi replies, waving a hand. "It rests right before the mountain paths going up to Great Climb and eventually the High house of Light."

You blink. "Truly?"

"Oh yes," she says. "There's a valley there with a small lake. We don't get the best trade, admittedly, since visitors have to pass through both the Dragonfly and the castle proper, but it's still a lively community." She grins. "Did you believe everything in our lands was mountains, monasteries and castles, Hiruma-san?"

You hold back a flush of embarrassment, and manage to keep your face straight. "I will admit the thought had crossed my mind."

"Rest assured, Hiruma-san, you are not the only one who has thought so," Hanabi says, nodding solemnly. She ruins the attempt by giggling. "But yes, while many of the Dragon seek to isolate themselves from the outside world to focus on enlightenment, we still have civilization."

"I can only ask that you forgive my assumptions, Mirumoto-san," you say, bowing in your seat. "It is unfair to both you and your people."

"There is nothing to forgive, Hiruma-san," Hanabi responds. "Many believe this, and we don't do much to discourage such thoughts with either words or deeds. It's just how we are."

"Do you see much trouble at the castle these days? I mean, just what the garrison had to deal with in the last week. No need to into everything, I'm sure a year would cover far too much for mere dinner conversation."

Well fair is fair. So she's a soldier eh? We can bond over that, surely she has to fight something regularly right?

"Do you see much trouble at the castle these days?"

Modifacation, from Crab experience.

Sure, but a week? I would doubt that the average garrison has a whole lot happen over the course of a week. Maybe a month?

"Do you see much trouble in the castle these days?" you ask, allowing yourself to relax. The subject of military matters is something you're far more comfortable with. "I mean, just what the garrison had to deal with in the last week. There's no need to into everything, I'm sure a year would cover far too much for mere dinner conversation."

"I'm not so certain, Hiruma-san," Hanabi responds, a bit taken aback by your question. She's still smiling, though. "Most of the time there is little for us to do. There have been occasional skirmishes with the Lion, but mostly we deal with bandits leftover from the conflict twenty years ago." Her smile dies. "Even now we still have to deal with the remnants Moto Shinichiro's insanity."

You blink and tilt quirk your head, confused by Hanabi's response. How could they possibly have that little action over a week's time, or even a year? The way she talks, border conflicts with a neighboring Clan appear to be the most dangerous things she and her comrades have encountered.

Then you remember you are not on the Wall. You hold back the urge to slap yourself, cursing your foolishness. It only makes sense that Hanabi does not see constant warfare, does not have to deal with conflict on a weekly or even daily basis. Here, in the northern part of the Empire, there is more opportunity for peace. Even now, after over two months away from home, you sometimes find yourself struck senseless by the very idea.

But while the notion isn't one you're completely used to, you shouldn't have forgotten like that. It is then that you realize how tired you are, weary from your travels and the relaxing bath you just came out of. A yawn threatens to break through your lips, but you manage to hold them shut. You can do little to stop the drooping of your eyes, however. Your exhaustion can be fought, but it cannot be denied.

"Ah, Hiruma-san! I didn't realize you were so tired," Hanabi says, eyes wide. "Please forgive me for keeping you from your rest. You must be drained after your long journey."

"I am a little fatigued, nothing more," you respond. "There's nothing to forgive, Mirumoto-san. I'll be alright."

"Even still, perhaps you should go to bed soon?" Hanabi asks. "The sun has set now, so sleep would not be uncalled for."

"I shall consider it," you respond, fighting back another yawn. "I get the feeling I'll need a good night's sleep for tomorrow. For now, though, I fear I won't provide much in the way of good conversation."

"You need not worry about that, Hiruma-san," Hanabi replies, standing. She bows to you, and you rise to do the same for her. "For I have greatly enjoyed our time together. But you are tired, and I do not wish to keep you from your rest." She smiles. "I hope we can meet again soon."

You sit back down and watch Hanabi as she leaves. She has a strong, purposeful stride touched with an airy grace. This only makes sense, for as a Mirumoto she has likely received instruction in dueling. That time honored and ritualized combat doesn't suit your own preferences, you prefer to smash enemies into bloody chunks, but you can appreciate it all the same.

A creeping exhaustion is making its way through your limbs, but despite earlier confusion your thoughts are clear. You're not entirely certain how long you can remain focused, but there isn't a pressing need to return to your room if there's more for you to do.
