Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

This is us responding to Hanabi's horrible insult of Hinawari... by supporting it and thus offering an insult of our own. You realize this, right? This is pretty seriously dishonorable behavior, as well as being cruel.
Well I don't like your vote or gman's, and I'm too lazy to write my own, so it was the best option left to me.

I don't think that's what the vote is going for. I think it's about quite deliberately interpreting everything just said (on both sides) in the nicest way possible, making it obvious that's that's what we're doing and praising them both for it.

(This actually works in real life. Although mostly, I think, because I actually did interpret it that way and only realised a couple of seconds later what actually happened. So ... sincerity is key. What's our sincerity again?)

Perhaps if you don't think it's done the right way like it is, you could help me phrase a new vote to that effect? Because that's something I'd like to vote for, but I don't have enough experience with Legend of the five rings to make it sound nice. Here's my starting point

[] Try to defuse the situation.
-[] Deliberately interpret everything just said and done (on both sides) in the nicest way possible. Make it obvious that that's what you're doing and praise them both for it. Be as sincere as possible about it and then, before they've recovered from their confusion, change the subject.
-[] Spend a void point.
Edit: Not going t work apparently. back to the drawingboard.

And let me double check that this won't backfire horribly. @Winged Knight Can I get an etiquette check on this? Does it clash in any way with our culture, principles etc?

... You just already wrote a vote. Your "best option left" is actually worse than any of the options presented at this moment.

*sigh*

Anyway. I'm thinking that perhaps a middle ground is the option here. The Musho Shugo explanation is kind of not being applicable in Himawari's case. And expressing disapproval for Hanabi's implied insult... and even more, she (Hanabi) is okay with this. This is what she's looking for.

And coming to think more and more about it, Sirocco's vote has it right. The third line has to change, so instead of showing disappointment, maybe...

...

Actually, that vote seems fine.

The oblivious crab is interesting

For the sake of the least possible problems for all involved. (And because nobody else wants to take out the table, damm it!)

Hanabi all but outright insulted both Himawari and her Lord by extension, covering it with the thinnest pretext. I don't even need to roll you guys Etiquette for this. I actually spoke with some friends of mine who are big into L5R and they all agreed with me on the matter. Himawari can't ignore this insult unless Hanabi apologizes or admits she did wrong in some fashion. To simply try and move along by interpreting everything in the best possible light isn't going to make this disappear.

I'm abstaining since I don't think any of the presented options would make for a positive change. Actually, we're just a crab visitor who got caught in the crossfire.

Reading a bit more about Musha Shugyo, Himawari would be considered as a "ronin" by Rokugan standards since she puts her allegiance to her clan "on hold". That means that 1) She shouldn't be wearing her mons, and 2) She shouldn't have introduced herself as "Kitsu", by the by. Unless she's lying of her true purpose in Dragon lands, comparing her case with the Musha Shugyo doesn't makes sense.

Actually.

@Winged Knight, may I ask for an investigation roll (notice) on Himawari? Because actually, I'm not sure if she's telling the truth about what brings her to Dragon lands, even if she's convinced to be saying the truth.

Sure, if you want.

Investigation Roll: 5k2=13

As far as Sosuke can tell, though he's quite distracted with everything going on right now, Himawari is telling the complete truth.

You look at Hanabi, her expression beatific in the face of Himawari's anger, and frown. This was not what you were expecting of someone who has treated you so kindly. Himawari cannot ignore the slight against both herself and her Lord, not and stay within the bounds of honor. But with Hanabi being a Mirumoto, she has no doubt been well trained in the art of the duel. If Himawari drew her sword here she would likely be humiliated.

To go to such lengths, simply because of a minor interruption, breaks the image you had of Hanabi. You'd thought her an exuberant, cheerful young woman. Now you see there are darker depths beneath her smile, something you'll have to watch out for. This is remarkably petty, and beneath her dignity as a Samurai.

Hanabi catches your gaze as your expression falls, and she cringes in the face of your obvious disapproval. Her eyes go wide, and she almost looks as if she is about to fall over. You're not entirely certain what brought this on, but it doesn't change the words that come out of your mouth.

"Mirumoto-san," you say softly. "I had thought better of you."

The Dragon Samurai recoils as if struck. "Wh- What do you mean, Hiruma-san?"

"All of this," you say, waving a hand. "Is unnecessary. I could understand if you were frustrated with Kitsu-san interrupting our conversation, but to speak such ills against both her and her Lord?" You shake your head. "It is too much."

Hanabi's jaw drops, and her eyes go even wider. They almost seem to take up the entirety of her face, and within those depths you see the oddest emotion. Fear… Hanabi is terrified by your words for some reason. Seeing her so frightened almost shakes loose your disappointment. You could understand shame, and you certainly see some of that from the blush on her cheeks, but it eclipsed by the woman's dismay.

Himawari, meanwhile, is looking at you with a thoughtful expression. Her anger seems to have died away in the face of your words, and their obvious affect on Hanabi. Which only leaves you even more confused.

Suddenly, Hanabi jumps to her feet and bows deeply to Himawari. The Lion Samurai blinks in surprise, almost standing up herself before the Dragon has a chance to speak.

"Please accept my most sincere apologies, Kitsu Himawari-san!" Hanabi proclaims. "My words were unworthy of our stations, and I have shown you grievous disrespect! I can only beg your forgiveness!"

Himawari looks at the bowing Hanabi, then glances at you again. She stays silent for a moment, considering. The Lion Samurai cups her chin in thought, frowning. You see she's as shocked as you are by this sudden turn around, and it trying to understand just what is going on.

You hope she's having better luck than you are. As things stand, events have gone wildly beyond your comprehension. What should have been a pleasant lunch, with perhaps a rude interruption, shifted from a single step toward a duel into a panicked apology, all because you expressed your displeasure. You've the feeling you're missing something, but you can't quite tell what.

"You spoke discourteously, Mirumoto-san," Himawari says at last. "And laid at my feet an insult I could not ignore." She takes a deep breath. "But you have also apologized quite profoundly, and I must admit I might have been… rude, barging into your meal with Hiruma-san as I did." She stands and bows back, though more shallowly. "It is forgiven."

A breath escapes your lips that you didn't realize you were holding. You're not certain just what happened, but it seems to have ended for the best. The insult has been rectified, and there doesn't need to be a duel. That should be the end of matters.

At least, you really hope so.

Alright Hiruma Sousuke, you have successfully calmed the situation. Yes Hanabi is a bit oh touched in the head, but you know it's probably a Dragon thing you know? I mean anyone would get touched in the head this far up in the mountains with no fighting, honestly.

So food is eh but company is interesting, hmm something to talk about something to talk about. Something that won't make me have to employ Sousuke disapproves stare again.

Hmm, think, think.

"What's your favourite kind of tea?"

There no one could take offense at asking about tea.

Well except a Crane.

And do that thing the tiny squid that lives in my brain keeps telling me too, he usually knows what's what.
