Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

O ho ho I smell a potential party member!

[x] I am on a task here myself accompanying a diplomat from my own clan. If you could explain the reason that you want to talk to the dragon then I could broach the subject with my lord. You understand that he will have the final say.

If we could do anything to reduce the animosity between tha Dragon and the Unicorn it would be huge right?

Remember, it's an entirely valid interpretation that the only sin of these ronin was identifying too strongly with their employer and making the common mistake of thinking that the Unicorn aren't real samurai. In at least some amount our new companion could be at fault for the confrontation.

She might be a potential party member but... do we want her?

- She's a drunk. It is clear that she's gone deeper into her cups than prudence would dictate.
- The dragonfly don't like her much, for whatever reason. There's no other way she would have been stuck here for months. Not only that, but she doesn't seem to have put in the effort to figure out why and/or take steps to fix the situation.
- She's a unicorn. Showing up in dragon lands with her in tow is going to damage us (and, by extension, our embassy, and mission) in the eyes of the Dragon. Getting the assistance of the Dragon for our clan in the fight against the Shadowlands is hugely more important than anything this samurai could do for us - if she had actual influence, she wouldn't have been stuck here this long.
- We've been associating with her for less than ten minutes, and already we've tarnished our own honor as a result. It is... better not to associate with those who tempt you to be less than you are.
- Any influence we might spend on her would be better spent in some other way on behalf of our clan - and the way she's asking is... inappropriate.
- Yasuki Goro would know basically all of this - or could figure it out quickly. While we could conceivably get him to agree, it would displease him. He'd likely think less of us - and rightly so.

So no. No, I don't think we do. Still, that does not mean that we cannot have compassion for the woman, and perhaps seek to help in some small way before we go. Insight, perhaps - we (and Shirou) might be able to offer her some useful advice on how to better pursue her goals in the lands of the dragonfly, without real cost to the Crab.

[x] "I may well be able to assist you, Shinjo-san. I cannot intervene directly on your behalf. What influence I might have is not mine to spend. However, if you can explain the particulars of the situation to me, I might have some insight into how you could help yourself. What is the business that brings you to the Dragon lands?"

Fair enough. In that case, it's the Dragon who have been having her cool her heels for three months. That doesn't help the situation... though it does, admittedly, change the means by which she might best cause the situation to change.

You blink. That sounded very close to a request for your aid. If so, then she's certainly flattering you in a roundabout way. It's also putting you on the spot. However, she phrased it as a question, not formal at all in its presentation. It almost sounded like an attempt at humor, really. As such, it's far more likely she's getting the ground ready to broach the topic.

If so, then this woman is more capable than she first appeared. She's definitely drunk, because you doubt anyone could be so good an actor to fake intoxication so well, but that doesn't preclude she understands subtlety and setting the stage of conversation. It would be a mistake to consider this Unicorn Samurai a fool simply from first impressions.

A hint of a smile graces your lips. Two months ago you would have never understood the intricacies of dialogue and the hidden depths within people. You'd likely have written this woman off as a complete drunkard, nothing more than this single instance you have observed. But you've too much respect now for the power of words, and those who hold them, to discard possibilities so readily.

However, that respect doesn't mean you'll allow yourself to fall into a potential trap.

"I may well be able to assist you, Shinjo-san," you say evenly, careful to promise nothing. "However, I cannot intervene directly on your behalf. What influence I might have is not mine to spend."

Shinjo Wanli scowls, and you see her eyes grow ever more lucid. She's sobering up remarkably fast. She's leaning less heavily on her spear, and her balance seems far steadier. However much she drank, she's apparently burned through it quite swiftly. Considering her previous exertions you would figure she's have made herself ill, but perhaps they merely helped hasten her recovery?

"I see," she says, settling her weapon back on its strap and standing straight. "I expected as much, but felt I had to ask." She sighs and looks to the side. "I'll just have to be patient, then. Always patient, no matter how long I must wait..."

"However," you continue. "If you can explain the particulars of the situation to me, I might have some insight into how you could help yourself. What is the business that brings you to the Dragon lands?"

The Unicorn Samurai looks back at you, her eyes widening a fraction. She takes control of it quickly, but in that moment it is obvious your words have given her hope. How strange… You did not commit to anything and phrased your response carefully. And yet, Shinjo Wanli seems to believe even this small offer is enough.

It is a response out of proportion to what you have given, and speaks to either foolhardiness or desperation. You are not certain which of the two possibilities is more troubling.

"There have been rumors of bandits within Dragon Lands," she responds. "Despicable men leftover from the cursed Moto Shinichiro's rampage throughout the north. The Dragon can, no doubt, deal with such filth, but I wished to offer them my aid." She takes a step forward. "I want to show them we are not like that abominable madman, or the filthy traitors who followed after him!"

"That is very noble of you," you say. "But if the Dragonfly haven't let you through, then that means the Dragon must not wish to meet with you." You motion with a hand to your surroundings. "They are, after all, the gatekeepers."

"Yes…" Wanli says softly, her lips tightening into a thin line. "My Clan sent letters first, humbly requesting they give their assistance to make up for past shame. There was no response beyond a curt refusal. I wished to go myself, and was granted permission by my Champion to make the attempt, but have been trapped here no matter how humble the letters I send." Her hands clench into fists, and she looks toward the ground. When she speaks again, her voice is a whisper. "Will I never have the chance to make right our disgrace?"

Sooo... loose cannon with heart in the right place. If she wasn't obsessively focused on this wrong, right here, we'd *love* to have her and as many more like her as we could find out on the wall - especially now.

I can see why the Dragon might not wish her in their lands, though.
- They're still miffed, and they're slighting the Unicorn (and poking them in the honor) as a way of getting some payback.
-- Knowing the Dragon, there may be a lesson wrapped in there somewhere. She is surprisingly impatient for one who has managed to wait for so long. Perhaps she has yet to learn it.
- They don't trust her, or the other Unicorn - blaming them for the sins of the past.
- They just don't want her rampaging around in their lands. Things int eh crab lands are built to withstand a fair amount of punishment, and there are large swaths of territory where you can go to fight your foes, and collateral damage is by and large a good thing. In the dragon lands? Not so much.
- The Unicorn offered formally, the Dragon said no, and now this obnoxious drunkard of a samurai is pounding on their door, hollering to be let in. This is supposed to be the thing that changes their mind? Really?

So, basically two tacks to take, that I see:

- Duty to Clan: Try to convince her to go volunteer on the Wall. The Shadowlands are on the move, and we would welcome the assistance of any of the Unicorn cavalry that wished to join us. The Dragon may not be willing to let them expunge this shame in this way, but there are few battles more clearly honorable than fighting back the hordes of Jikogu that seek to destroy all of Rokugan.

- Compassion: The Dragon find her wanting... and her waiting hasn't changed that. In and of itself, it will not change that. The Dragon, though - they see things differently than the other clans. Perhaps... perhaps she might seek enlightenment, while she is here? It would be a way to spend the time so that it is not simply wasted, and it may well cause them to be more favorably inclined to her petition. The dragonfly know the dragon well, also, and they do not seem to have the same trouble with her. They may be able to offer some advice on what she might do to become someone that the Dragon would accept help from.

Possibly a mix. Propose that she seek enlightenment (and also humbly seek the advice of the Dragonfly), but if her patience gives out (for it is true that the Dragon have a different idea of patience than the rest of us) that the Crab would surely welcome her and as many of her clanmates as wished to join her.

Ok i like this a lot, if you make a vote out of it i will vote for enlightenment and aid or something like that? Maybe we can pick her up on the way back after asking the dragon if they wish to test her commitment. If she travels with us she can show the Dragon how useful she is, gain honor and learn from a Monk.
We get a diplomatic attractive lady friend who can fight... i'd be really pissed if she had a major issue like our old Waifu did though

It's not about the waifu Kildar

anyways.

[x] Write in:

"Shinjo-san, how are you fighting the disgrace by being drunk in this city? I know patience is hard, but if you wish to show the world that the Unicorn are indeed honourable, then you must find another way, strive after it every respect wherever you are. If the Dragon won't let you in, ask for permission to help the Dragonfly, that is what I would do."

Shrug.

"Perhaps this is a test of the Dragon to see if you are willing to humble yourself and seek enlightenment or some such."

[x]"Shinjo-san, I cannot offer any true understanding of the Dragon, but I know they value other parts of Bushido more highly than either Unicorn or Crab. I am told there are often lessons in their actions. Perhaps, if you seek some form of enlightenment, you may show them that you have found the path, whatever it may be. I am sure the Dragonfly would aid you, if you asked. "

[x] Bring the matter to the attention of your lord. You can sympathise with her plight and maybe there is something to be gained here that you cannot see? Either way maybe Goro-sama will have some further insight on the issue or see some opportunity you cannot.
