Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

Why are we ignoring such an obvious plot hook? :(
The plot hook, sad as it is, is a *trap*. There are many, many ways that we can cost ourselves far more than we get back here. Personally, I've been trying to think of a way to salvage some sort of value out of this one, and I've not yet come up with one. It's thematic, though. Rokugan is desperately, desperately unfair sometimes, and many of its endings are unhappy ones.

This chapter is "the price of jade". I'm not certain, but I suspect that watching this poor samurai-ko walk by and swallowing our bile as we do nothing about it may be part of that price.

[X] Let her go.

This isn't our fight, and I don't see anything that we can do to help without endangering our own mission. Sad as it may be, I think we have to let this one slip by.

Looks like I am falling victim to my lack of lore knowledge but I would like to point out that the OP has given us 3 chances to follow up on this plot line. Hell he outright told us that there is much more that meets the eye here. Maybe a secret high level attempt of negotiation? Vital info to be passed? We literally lose nothing to bring her and her case before Goro. Maybe I am losing sight of the big picture but I cannot shake the feeling that we are passing over something enormously important here.

She takes a deep breath. "I even revealed to her the secret I had been tasked to deliver to the Dragon Clan Champion, Mirumoto Kensuke-sama. The true reason I was granted such extended leave." Wanli grimaces. "All she did was laugh in my face, and said none of my letters would ever pass their borders."

[] Call out to Wanli. (Write in.)
[] Let her go.

Just LOOK at it! It practically screams "IMPORTANT PLOT LINE! SHINNY GET!"

My precious...

Edit: I thought the price of Jade would be either money or some hellisly difficult mission for the Dragon? In which a greatful extra companion would be invaluable...

Traps also do this thing. Actually, I'm pretty sure that there *is* some shiny here. The Unicorn are well-known as peerless cavalry, and this is a matter close to their hearts... at a time when having some friendly peerless cavalry would be awfully helpful for the Crab. Unfortunately, it is also a trap. The question is if we are good enough to steal out the bait without setting it off on ourselves and our mission.

Although... your argument has helped me solidify what my actual plausible objectives would be in this case, which gives at least a small way forward. Let's see if we can salvage something.

[x] Call out to Wanli
- [x] Try to do so at a distance where you need not shout out to the city at large.
- [x] "Shinjo-san, wait. Please. I have misjudged you, and it shames me. I do not know if there is anything I can do, but I will at least make some inquiries. Before you go, could you tell me where I might find you, in case they bear fruit?"

I'd still prefer not to get involved here. We're a guest of the Dragonflies, and it's really not our job to stick our nose in their business. We should tell our sworn lord, but that's it.

The Dragonflies can also cause trouble for us, if they feel like it, and could easily be keeping an eye on her.

For example, if they suspect we're in league, and might carry a message for her, they could sit on giving us permission to move on.

She -the dragonfly champion- has already given her word that the party will be on its way the next day. Can she back down on it?

Pissing off the Dragonfly Champion may not be the plan, even if we could get away with it. She has influence with the Dragon, after all.

That's why I go this path. I don't think she'll be pissed by us feeling sympathy for the Unicorn (honestly, she might enjoy the Schadenfreude of it) and offering to make inquiries. At that point, we haven't done anything. Then we go talk with the Boss. We lay out what we know, and what we don't know, and we let a Highly Trained (and Somewhat Unconventional) Diplomat (who knows the situation *far* better than we do) take over the task of figuring out whether or not to unravel it, how much, and how. That, too, is something she'd not have much reason to be offended by. It keeps the door open for maybe doing something without diplomatically shooting ourselves (and our boss) in the foot.

It also (assuming she deigns to tell us, and it seems like a good idea) lets us try to make the "come join us on the Wall" pitch at a time when we have more information (having talked with Goro) and she's not overwhelmed with frustration and embarrassment.

Although... the timing here seems odd. The Dragonfly Champion winds up a long, involved process of stringing her along by utterly shattering her hopes... on the same day we ride into town? When she knew we were coming? That... sounds like something that might not have been a coincidence. Huh.

What would be the intention, if the Dragonfly champion wanted to happen this way? I would say is just a coincidence, but knowing is the Dragonfly and the Dragon we're speaking about, I agree with this.

Now the question is what the Dragonfly/Dragon wants to get from this. Is this a test to measure us who has obtained some Glory on our way to the north? Hmm...

Oh, Tonbo Akane did this days ago. She got Yasuki Goro's letter that he would be arriving about a day after she did the reveal with Wanli, and Wanli has been stewing in misery before finally deciding "You know what, fuck it. I'm depressed and angry, so it's time for some drinks." I apologize for the lack of clarity on this matter.

There is no need to apologize. Life lacks clarity. I'm actually a little surprised you corrected us on this (though it's certainly useful). For that matter, the fact that you've basically given us WoQM that the samurai-ko isn't lying is a pretty significant reveal all by itself.

Among other things, this all suggests that she's concluded that the situation is helpless, but hasn't any idea what to do about it. She's in one of those trapped by honor things. Obedience demands that she stay until she is seen, but she has no way forward from here.

There's an interesting implication here that the Dragon know nothing of this - that they never even received the initial letters offering assistance. Sadly, even if that is true, there's no guarantee that the Dragon would look kindly on us for ensuring that the messages get through. They have a gatekeeper for a reason, and it's entirely possible that they would approve of her actions entirely, did they know of them. They do have reason to feel kind of bitter, after all.

Still...all the more reason to let our lord know of this.

Eh, you all were basically one Investigation Roll from figuring that out anyway. I've no trouble with this getting revealed with the clarification.

I would ask from you two - why just let her go instead of my write-in? I don't think it really costs anything, and knowing where to find her (and not having to ask the dragonfly, or be obvious about it) might be useful.

Also, it should convince her to put off committing seppuku for long enough to at least see if anything can be done, if she decided that that was her only honorable way out of the situation.

The earlier discussion that this seems like a story trap and we've pushed things too far. That in L5R, sometimes you don't win.

That said, it looks like your write-in is winning anyways, so eh.

The full measure of your error hits you as Wanli passes by, leaving you stupefied. You made several assumptions about this situation, and charged ahead without gathering all the facts. If this had been in war, your commander would have rightfully chastised you. Scouting is essential, and battles are won or lost depending on the information gathered.

It exemplifies just how much you've still left to learn. You've grown much over these last two months, and in more ways than one. But did you perhaps fall prey to arrogance? No matter how much you've learned, you must always remember there will be evermore to discover. If you forget that, you leave yourself open for to dishonor.

Just like the situation you find yourself in right now, in fact. You take a deep breath and steady yourself. There is still time to rectify this mistake. You can make things right.

You turn and catch up to Wanli, who walks with slumped shoulders. She glances at you, her eyes downcast and sullen, but turns away. Her posture almost makes it look as if she's trying to sink into her heavy armor, to hide away from the world.

"Shinjo-san, please wait," you say, reaching out a hand. You do not touch her, however. "I have misjudged you, and it shames me. I do not know if there is anything I can do, but I will at least make some inquiries."

She stops at your words, looking at you properly now. Wanli peers at your face for several moments, as if searching for something. Then, finally, the Unicorn Samurai sighs and relaxes. She takes a step away from you and bows low.

"I must apologize to you, Hiruma-san," she says. "I have found myself… frustrated, these last few months. That is no excuse, however. You do not deserve my ire."

"You do not need to apologize, Shinjo-san," you respond, making your own bow. "I was too quick to judge on first appearances. In truth, I feel I must apologize to you."

"Then if you will consider my own lapse forgiven, I shall forgive yours," Wanli says, rising. "And we can move on from there." She pauses a moment, her expression softening. "I am grateful that you would make this offer, Hiruma-san. Do you think you can truly help me?"

"I can make no promises as to how effective I can be, but I can certainly ask counsel from those more experienced," you answer. "Hopefully something might arise from that."

"That is all I could ask for," Wanli responds, giving you a wan smile. "Thank you, Hiruma-san. This kindness shall not be forgotten."

"It is no great trouble," you say. "Before you go, could you tell me where I might find you, in case they bear fruit?"

Wanli nods. "I am staying at an inn on the edge of the city called 'The Frilled Lizard.'" She shifts her feet. "It is… not the cleanest place, but people keep to their own business there."

"Then I shall find you there should anythin come of my efforts," you say.

"My thanks, Hiruma-san," Wanli says, bowing again. "I wish you the best of luck. I won't take up any more of your time."

"A good day to you, Shinjo-san," you respond, bowing back.

You gaze after Wanli as she walks away, the Unicorn Samurai standing much straighter this time as she goes. You didn't promise her much, hardly anything at all, yet her mood brightened considerably. From what she said, and her general attitude, you can imagine why. Her reception in these lands must have been harsh and unwelcoming, so even a little courtesy would go a long way.

Shirou walks up beside you, hands clasped behind his back. He looks at Wanli, then at you. He nods to himself, as if everything he sees is only to be expected. How, exactly, you can't imagine. But then again, your friend is a strange man.

"It seems there is never a dull moment with you, Sosuke-sama," he says, his expression so serious you just know he's putting on an act. "Interesting events happen everywhere you go."

Well we have something to ask Yasuki Goro about. Not much else to do in town anyways, I don't think.
