Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

[x] How bold off you to threaten a Samurai in full view of her peers Ronin. If you have a death wish why not head to the lands of the Crab and die fighting the forgotten, instead of losing your life here?
[x] Roll to intimidate

Just barging in her fight seems like a sure way to insult her by implying that she is weak. Better to take issue of a bunch of thugs disrespecting their betters?

Also flex our huge what? :ogles:

[x] gman

presumably we are currently wearing armor and carrying testubo, yes?

Also, it might be worth considering a void point on the intimidate roll.

Intimidation Roll: 5k3=21

"I would not do that if I were you," you shout, stepping forward immediately. Shirou is but a step behind you, covering your flank. You loom over everyone, and place a hand on your tetsubo. "This is hardly the time or place for bloodshed."

"A Crab?" one of the Ronin asks, scratching his head. "What in the name of Heaven is a Crab doing this far north?"

The Ronin all shift, trying to keep their eyes on both you and the Unicorn Samurai they surrounded. She, meanwhile, drew her spear from her back. She didn't hold it in a guard position, however, instead slamming the butt of it into the ground and leaning upon it. She sways where she stands, and it's obvious she's having some trouble standing.

"Stay out of this, Samurai!" the lead man, the one who was thrown, calls out. "You've no business here! This is between us and the Unicorn!"

"I'm afraid it has become my business," you growl. You take another step closer, making the Ronin flinch. The tallest of them is a full head shorter than you, and you loom over them like a mountain. "I dislike seeing such uneven odds."

"You're honestly going to fight us over this?" he asks, eyes wide with incredulity. "She's Unicorn! The Dragon aren't going to care what happens to her, not after what they've done!"

The woman flinches at the man's words, almost stumbling backward and losing her balance. She grips her spear tighter and steadies herself, but for that brief moment before she regains her footing you see her eyes tighten with pain. She opens her mouth…

"The Dragon might not," you say before she can speak, stepping within arms reach of the man and looking down at him. "But the Dragonfly would, for this is their land and you are their guests, Ronin-san. Besides, how low is your pride as warriors that you need five of you to beat one Samurai?" You pause, then smile so wide it shows your teeth. "Well, two Samurai."

"And one monk," Shirou says, stepping up beside you and crossing his arms. The motion, perhaps not coincidentally, readily shows off his impressive musculature. "I will not stand by and watch such an unjust battle."

"She threw me out of the building!" the lead man cries. "I'm not the one in the wrong here!"

"You insulted my Clan," the Unicorn woman says, her words slurring. "Called us a bunch of Gaijin traitors. I'll not just let that go unanswered!"

"It seems to me," you say. "That for being so uncouth you deserved a little thrashing." You look him up and down. "You're fine. Take your friends and return to your drinks." You lean forward and whisper. "You don't want to push me on this. It will end very badly for you."

The Ronin scowls at you, his nostrils flaring. He lips tighten into a thin line, and for a moment you believe he is about to yell. Then, he blinks and looks from you to Shirou. His face pales a little, and you can see the fire die in his eyes. It seems what courage he has facing one opponent has died quickly when confronting much more even odds.

"Come on," he says to the others. "They're not worth dirtying our blades over."

The Ronin all head back into the sake house, grumbling and shooting you dirty looks. None take it further than that, however. They appear to have come to the same conclusion their leader did. With your involvement, what would have been a relatively simple fight suddenly becomes much more trouble than it is worth.

You look back to the Unicorn Samurai after making sure all the Ronin went back inside. She's still standing on wobbly knees, and you're fairly certain a stiff breeze will knock her over at this point. You're not sure how much she has drunk, but it is obviously more than she can handle.

Sosuke has used a low skill, which is an act beneath one of his exalted standing as a Samurai. To resort to base intimidation is something to be eschewed under the precepts of Bushido, and at his current Honor Rank he loses 6 points of Honor.

However, he only used this skill in defense of someone whom he had no obligation to protect. As such, he gains 2 points of Honor for aiding a complete stranger by his own volition.

Turn to the Unicorn woman and bow.

"Hiruma Sosuke, yojimbo of Yasuki Goro-sama, and who are you?"

Find things out ect.

"Do you wish to join us? We're just exploring the city."

She's nearly falling-over drunk. I don't think she'll be all that good at walking about the city.

Better to see her safely gotten to somewhere she can sleep it off. Mind you, there's a story here, too, I suspect. A unicorn in the lands of the dragonfly is a bit unusual, and one getting drunk to the point of using her spear to stay upright is moreso. Then there was the comment about "not after what they've done." Did the Unicorn do something to offend the dragon recently?

Its not perfect but it covers the relevant points I think. We do not insult her, we hopefully try to find out all the relevant details and maybe find out what happened between the Unicorns and the dragon? Or is it some kind of major in game event I should be aware of? Not too familiar with the setting im afraid.

Way back near the start it was mentioned they had a war twenty years ago in this verse . Should be in the Recent History post in the index.

And then, not even two years later, the Unicorn hero Moto Shinichiro decided his Clan should rule the Empire. Normally this would not have been too disrupting, but he brought a giant clone army created from an ancient artifact to enforce his claim. Naturally, people didn't take kindly to this and the conflict further wrecked Dragon Lands before he was finally stopped.

So yeah, the Dragon are not happy with the Unicorn even twenty years later.

The Unicorn Samurai eyes you warily, or at least as much as she can. Really, it looks more like she's squinting to get the sun out of her eyes. She shifts her grip on the spear, drawing closer to it and standing straighter. Frankly, you're a little surprised she is standing so well wearing heavy armor while so obviously intoxicated.

"I am Hiruma Sosuke," you say, bowing to her. "Yojimbo of Yasuki Goro-sama. And you are?"

She doesn't answer immediately. She instead cocks her head and observes you, as if trying to peer through a fog. Almost a full minute passes by as you stand there, still bowed, waiting for her to respond. Considering you are also wearing heavy armor, holding this position is becomes rather uncomfortable as your bruised body begins to protest.

Finally, though, her eyes widen in what you can only presume is recognition. She bows deeply to you, almost falling over. She has to grab the spear with both hands to keep from tumbling onto the ground.

"I am Shinjo Wanli," she replies, rising quickly. You follow suit, and your back thanks you for it. "And you… You are the honorable Hiruma Sosuke-san, the hero of the Battle of Skulking Shadows!"

"I was involved in that conflict, yes," you respond, blinking in the face of her enthusiasm. "Though I can assure you, that battle saw those who sacrificed far more than I. They are the real heroes."

For a moment you think of Gazat'ken, dying in agony on that bed within Shinsei's Last Hope. The Nezumi gave his life to defend your people. By extension, he gave his life to save you as well. Gazat'ken had volunteered to help in a conflict his people were not truly involved in, not really. He could have lived happily in the Shinomen Mori amongst his people, never knowing the pain of battle. Instead, he ventured into the Shadowlands to give his service to allies not even of his own species.

It seems your life is made of people sacrificing themselves around you, so that evil would not prevail. They all perish, while you continue to live on. Gazat'ken… Shasa… How many more friends will you have to see die before you join them?

It is a foolish question. You already know the answer, but do not wish to dwell upon it out of fear. It is a shameful excuse, but one you can't help all the same. No matter how strongly you hold to Bushido, you cannot deny your own humanity. That holds strength, but also weakness. You can only pray that the former never succumbs to the latter.

"You speak too modestly!" Wanli says, dragging you away from your thoughts. She appears to be growing more lucid in her excitement. "Without you that battle would have been much different! No matter what you say, you are a hero!"

"You flatter me," you respond, and you keep yourself from shuffling your feet only through an effort of will. You're not used to all this attention. "If you don't mind, could you tell me what exactly happened inside the sake house?"

The woman snorts. "Those Ronin thought they could insult my Clan to my face after I'd had a few cups of sake. I simply voiced my protest of their assumptions. Vigorously."

"A fine reason," you respond. "We must always defend the honor of our Clans." You pause a moment, considering. "Do you wish to join us? We're just exploring the city."

"I've seen all I want of this city!" Wanli replies, throwing up a hand. The other still holds the spear for support. "I've been waiting here for months, trying to get the proper papers from the Dragonfly to enter the lands of the Dragon! But it's delays, always delays!" She grins. "I don't suppose there's anything an esteemed warrior like yourself could do to help me with that?"

Blink for a moment, wait what?

How can we help with that?

Well....

No that won't work, you'd never have enough tea for that.

"Esteemed warrior or not, I'm still pleased to meet you Shinjo-san. If you could perhaps show us around and explain what exactly you wish to talk to the Dragon about?"
