"No, my Lord," you answer. "Thank you for your time, but I believe I have asked everything that was on my mind."

"For now, anyway," Yasuki Goro replied, chuckling. "You're an awfully inquisitive young man, Sosuke-san. A good trait to have, if properly utilized."

"As you say, Yasuki-sama," you reply. "I will endeavor to do so."

"Very good," your superior says. "I'm certain you will do the Clan proud."

The next few days continue without much happening as you journey on. The ground slowly becomes hillier as you make your way ever northward. For the most part your caravan does not come across anything. This land lies between three Great Clans, and is for the most part uninhabited save for a few farms here and there.

It is a peaceful trek, and gives you time to think. Soon, you will be performing the duty Yasuki Goro told you so many weeks ago. Soon you will tell the Dragon your story, stress the urgency of the coming war. You cannot fail here. There is never enough Jade for those who hold the Wall, and the Crab need every piece they can get.

You ruminate on this often on your journey, coming back to it even as you try to distract yourself. It is almost a relief when you come to the village of Tangan-Mura, for at least now there are other things to take up your focus aside from your own thoughts.

The village is not very large, consisting of no more than perhaps forty houses and a few storage sheds. A number of small fields are cultivated outside the village, providing sustenance, and there is a forest to the east where game is likely hunted. For such a small population it is likely all that is needed in order to feed everyone, as well as pay what taxes are demanded.

There is even an inn, though its presence surprises you. Yasuki Goro took a more direct route from Shiro sano Ken Hayai rather than following the highway to Oiku and cross the river there. It made the journey more difficult, but it saved time. Still, being so far from the main roads means that Tangan-Mura didn't see many visitors.

Maybe that explained all the fear in the eyes of the people as you come close.

These people are terrified, you think to yourself as you ride into the community, the sun setting in the distance. Is something going on here?

It's true. Everyone you pass by looks at your caravan with barely restrained expressions of panic, and quickly avert their gazes when you look at them. No… Not the caravan. They look at you, Shasa and Yasuki Goro with fear. It is the Samurai that frighten them, not the Ashigaru or Shirou.

Something is very wrong here, you muse as your party stops at the inn and begins to unload for the evening. Why are these people so frightened?

Yasuki Goro goes inside to make the preparations for your lodging, while you take care of your horse. The animal has had a bit of a rough time with the rocky hills, and you hope a night of rest in a proper stable will do your mount some good. You've got at least another week to go before you reach Kyuden Tonbo, and you can't afford your horse going lame before then.

"Honored Samurai!" a woman cries out from the street, coming before you and throwing herself upon the ground in a bow so deep her forehead practically slams against the earth. What few people are left out at this time of night look at her aghast, but she doesn't take notice of them. "Please, I beseech you! You must help me! The beast has taken my son! Please save him!"

"Hikaru, stop this!" a man from the street said, reaching for her. "Do you want to bring doom upon us all?"

"I don't care!" Hikaru cries, ripping her arm away from the man's grasp. She glares at him, tears streaming down her cheeks. "How many more months will we be silent as our children are taken? I won't stand for it! I won't let my Danzu be slaughtered because the rest of you are cowards!"

Duty tells us that we cannot truly tarry long...

But Compassion and Courage tell us to find this thing and give it a thumpin

Duty tells us that we cannot truly tarry long...
Duty tell us that if it is another shadowland infiltration stirring trouble at heartlands as we did already see in Scorpion lands it may be as important as our mission or at least important to our mission. The more "ammo" we get for negotiation - the more likely we actually will get Jade out of it to strengthen the Wall. Well, it could be unrelated and than it would be waste of time, but well Compassion and Courage indeed.

If we're really unlucky it could be a non Tainted monster of some kind - they do exist, Naar Taban for example but I don't know if one of those would come here.

[x] Tell me more.

I'm having this feeling that it has to do with some dream we had before leaving Rugashi. You know, the Kohsa thingy.

For those who doesn't want to fish for the particular post:

You see the man, Kohsa, standing over the bodies of his children with utter despair still etched upon his face. His hands are covered in blood, and it drips to the ground within the dark place you find yourself in. Kohsa kneels down and reaches out to cup his son's face with one hand, and his daughter's with another. Somehow the blood on his hands does not stain his children's pale, lifeless faces.

The sob that tears its way through his lips doesn't seem like something that should come from a human throat. It is animalistic and rough, echoing strangely in this place. He weeps openly, his grief so strong that his whole body shakes. There is no decorum here, no stoicism you would expect from a proper Samurai. There is only utter, terrible sadness.

"How much more," he whispers to the shadows, head still bowed over the corpses of his son and daughter. "How much more must be done till they return to me?"

"Just a little more now, Kohsa-sama," speak the children in unison as they come out from the gloom to approach the despondent father. There are six now, twice the number as before, and they have the same, unnatural smile. "You have done so well. Just a little more blood, and everything you wish for shall be yours."

Hmm... perhaps I should've done this earlier.

[x] Explain further.

The man looks as if he is going to step forward to grab Hikaru again, but you interpose yourself between them. The peasant, much shorter than you, flinches and backs away from your looming bulk. He refuses to meet your gaze, backing away and hunching over as if to protect himself from a coming blow. You're honestly a little surprised by how frightened he is.

"Please don't cause us grief, Hikaru," the man begs softly. "Please."

There are a few others in the street whispering similar sentiments. A small crowd has gathered, perhaps eight people and all including the man who had reached for Hikaru. It is enough commotion to draw the attention of both Shasa and Shirou, who come to stand by your side.

You turn back to Hikaru, who seems to be torn between fury at the crowd and utter desperation toward you. It's an odd mixture of emotions, and it makes the woman's expression strange. You're not entirely certain how to proceed.

So you decide to just go on ahead anyway, and hope things will work out.

"Please explain," you say. "What is going on here?"

"For the past… past few weeks children in the village have been disappearing," Hikaru says. "Just taken in the night, with hardly any sign at all! We thought they might have been wandering off into the woods, but no bodies have ever been found. They were just gone!"

"A kidnapper?" Shasa asks. "And the local Doshin hasn't been able to help you?"

"That man is a fool and a drunkard," Hikaru spat. "And afraid to look too far out, especially once the ogre came into the village."

"Ogre?" you say, your eyebrows shooting up to your hairline. "There's been an ogre here?"

"It came into the village about three weeks after the first disappearance, demanding to use the village forge," Hikaru says. "Gave the smith five lumps of gold and crafted itself a giant sword. He's out in the forest somewhere. It must be the monster who is taking our children!"

"It could talk?" Shasa asked, her surprise obvious. "That is… strange."

"Why have you not sent a letter to the Samurai in charge of your village?" Shirou asks. "Surely they would send a force out to slay the beast."

"Do you know where we are, Monk?" a man from the crowd asks. "We stand between three Great Clans! The Lion would balk at the Dragon sending any force so close to their borders, and the Dragon would react the same! And who knows what the Unicorn might do." He shudders. "I remember the Dragon-Unicorn War, and Moto Shinichiro's rampage. None of us ever wants to see that again."

"I don't care!" Hikaru shrieks. "I don't care who gets offended or what wars are started! I just want my son back! I won't let my Danzu perish like all the others! I won't!"

Hikaru breaks down sobbing, hands over her face. You're not entirely certain what to do here. This village stands in a nebulous position, one where it is uncertain just what Clan can claim ownership of it. Back in Scorpion lands, you acted with their blessing. Here, you have no such certainty.

But as you think upon Hikaru's pleading, desperate words, you're not entirely sure that matters. Some creature has been taking these children, no doubt for some vile purpose. Such a thing cannot stand.

You must make a decision.

[x] We are not Dragon, Lion or Unicorn.
-[x] We are Crab.
[x] If there is danger from the Shadowlands here, we must root it out and destroy it. Duty compels us.

Actually it's not our call. It's Goro's.

[x] Write in:

"Yasuki-sama, I am aware that our task is of great import, thus if you judge it of greater import than helping these peasants; I understand. However, my Lord, I would ask of you to let me go and handle the matter, the notion of the Southern Foe being here makes my blood run hot and my hands itch for a chance to swing my tetsubo at it. I leave it in your honourable hands my lord."
