Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

Wait, so if Kyuden Tonbon is behind Shiro sano Ken Haiyai, then why are we outing to skip it? Isn't visiting the dojo something we should get in detail?

[x] Timeskip to Shiro Sano Ken Hayai

We're not, we're voting to skip everything before it. It's like going from Washington DC to New York City but deciding to not spend any time in Philadelphia.

How much time has passed since this journey started? Is there a deadline for our comeback?

Also, assuming we're not getting a ship back to Crab lands, we can also go back from when we came.

Considering Philadelphia in this case is the sword dojo of the gods(Akodo swordsmanship is a pretty big deal, right?), I'm thinking maybe we should be visiting it in greater detail than just passing by.

Within the hour you are journeying forth, following the highway toward Dragon Lands. You'll be on it for some time yet, though within the mountainous region of the Dragon you will have to venture off of the main roads. Within their region the Imperial Highway is less set, mostly out of necessity considering the uneven terrain.

Your caravan passes through Shiro Sano Ken Hayai with little incident, staying within the ancestral home of the Kitsu Family for but a day before continuing on. The city is smaller than Rugashi, but it seemed to have a grander feel to it. This has more to do with the city's obvious age than the lack of merchants, of course, though the latter certainly doesn't hurt.

Despite this powerfully austere atmosphere of the city, however, you get the feeling of… loss, perhaps? The city appears to have been bigger once, some land outside it showing signs of cultivation. However, the settlement has obviously shrunk over the years. This must have been considered strategically important once, but obviously this is not the case any more.

The people within seem content enough, of course, but aside from the holdings of the Kitsu Family this city appears almost more of a way station for travelers than a proper palace. Then again, the Kitsu have always been the smallest Family within the Lion Clan, as well as the most insular. Perhaps this faded prestige was only natural, with that being the case?

This place is not ill cared for by any means. The city is in fine condition, with its fortifications both well maintained and strong. Even still, as you look about the city upon your departure you cannot help but feel saddened. This was a grand city once, and now that glory has dimmed. It seems to you something worthy of sorrow.

And then you pass the Drowned Merchant River, and are out of Lion territory.

The first thing that becomes apparent are the abundance of hills within this land. Almost immediately once you have forded the river you see the region begin to change from the flat plains of the Lion lands to something far more varied. It's not too bad as of yet, for there are only a few hills here and there. For now, at least, the terrain will not be too arduous.

It's going to get rougher, though, you think to yourself. Hills will become mountains. We'll have to take care with the horses and the wagon.

Even still, you are so close! After so many weeks of travel, you are finally coming upon the holdings of the Dragon. You've seen so much, gone through so many experiences, and now your destination is coming within sight. A little over a week, perhaps two, and your journey will conclude.

It's a rather odd feeling, now that you think about it. You've spent so much time traveling that you almost thought it would never end. But all things do, with the passage of time. You look about at your companions, comrades who have stayed with you through thick and thin, and can't help but smile.

You're approaching a milestone in your life, and you couldn't have made it without them.

[x] Talk to Yasuki Goro,

The Dragonfly clan aren't famous, so we should find out what there deal is.

- [x] Now that she's seen Yasuki-sama in his element, and considering that that is a large part of what the Yasuki do for the Clan, how does she feel about her desire to study the ways of the courtier?

Inquire about the Dragonfly. What does Yasuki-sama know that he feels it would be worthwhile for us to know? In particular, any insight on what approach to take with them would be welcome.

You shake off those strange feelings and focus on the here and now. There will be time yet to think about such things, on your growth and just how far you've come from home. All of that is important, and worth due consideration. But at this moment there is still a mission to accomplish.

To that end, it seems to you that solidifying your bond with your comrades is a fine idea. You move your horse over to Shasa, who from the looks of things did not sleep well last night. Her clothing is well in order, of course, but she seems… weary. Yes, that is the correct word.

"Greetings Shasa-san," you say to her, bowing in your saddle. "Please pardon my intrusion, but are you feeling well?"

"Ah, Sosuke-san!" Shasa says, blinking a little in surprise. She bows to you. "Yes, I am doing all right. I simply did not get the best rest last night, and I fear I am a bit distracted as a result."

"My deepest wishes for your rest to be smoother come this evening," you respond.

"My thanks, Sosuke-san," Shasa replies, smiling a little. She seems to have perked up a bit at your concern. "Is there anything you wished to speak with me about?"

"I was a little curious, actually," you answer. "I was wondering about your experience with Yasuki-sama yesterday. Dealing with matters of trade and currency are some of the most common things the Yasuki do for the Clan." You shrug a little. "Has your wish to learn the arts of the courtier changed any with this new event?"

"A curious question," Shasa says before she goes silent, thinking deeply.

A thought occurs to you that your question is, perhaps, just a bit too personal a topic to broach in this manner. After all, despite what it feels like you've really only known Shasa for barely two months. She was remarkably forthright with you to begin with, sharing her concerns and revealing to you her private interests.

But you'd like to think that after all you've both experienced, there is room for you to discuss these kinds of things. You've fought together, bled together. That has to mean something. Friendships forged amongst battle are some of the strongest to exist, or so everyone says.

And you cannot deny that after all the adventures you've gone through on this trip you do feel closer to Shasa than might seem regular for your short time together. At the very least, you'd like for her to be happy and content with her life.

"I believe my overall feelings remain unchanged," Shasa says at last, looking back at you. "I still want to be a courtier, if that is possible. I still want to learn, even if it means I would have to engage in such things as the dealings of trade and currency."

"So you will carry on, then?" you ask.

"Yes," Shasa says. "I think I will. Yesterday was enlightening, and even a little disquieting, but I will not be daunted. I will overcome my reservations and seek my own path in the benefit of the Clan." She smiles. "After all, what more can any Samurai strive for?"

What more can any samurai strive for? This is a bit of trick question. While it's not mentioned in polite company, during the Clan Wars Hida Kisada known as the Bear strove to find his own path for the betterment of the clan. He allied himself with the Shadowlands and brought the Empire to its knees before realizing the depths of what he did and turning away from his alliance. But even so, the lesson taught by Kisada remains. The Crab are part of the Empire, not the Empire itself.

[x] Write-in: "What more to serve the clan" Look up, is that a bird? Look back at Shasa. Okay get your thoughts in order, don't let her catch you out of formation. Marshall them and speak Sosuke. For the Hiruma!

"To serve the Clan is our duty, our task and in truth I could find no other task to desire beyond that. Yet, as we walk these lands so far from home, beyond the darkness and terror. I find myself thinking, it is good that we protect them from that. So if you were to ask me what more, I would have to say, to serve the Empire through the Clan."

Hmm a Haiku occurs to me...

"Emerald Empire
Bound by Honour and Duty
For your sake we die"

Wait did I just say that out loud? Crap!

"Er anyways, I wish you best of luck on your path Shasa-san, I am sure that when they tell your tales they will be glorious."

Good now fight down that weird feeling in my stomach.

Is there a roll we need to do for this? I was under the impression that Haiku composing is an artisan skill of some sort.

I don't like Gman391s vote after it goes into the whole Haiku part as I am getting a little tired of us playing the flustered teenager in front of her constantly and embarrassing ourselves without reason.
