Gate - thus the jsdf fought there discussion, idea, and recs thread

I liked it. It helps attempts to bring depth to something that really deserves better.

Thank you. I appreciate it.

In a more light hearted vein, I offer the following:

All Roads Lead To Italica

For Panache, Knight of the Rose Order and commander of the Order's forces in Italica, the now recognizable sound of the JSDF's steel carriages offered the promise of resolving a peculiar puzzle that had fallen into her lap.

With the successful defense of the city by the 'Green Men' and the garrisoning of a few hundred knights of the Rose Order, followed by the establishment of the Alnus Trading Cooperative, the trading caravans once more traveled the roads to Italica and while the city itself was well protected, the caravans were seen as a tempting target for the smaller groups of bandits still at large. Panache regularly sent mounted patrols to reduce the risk but still, some attacks were inevitable.

Four days ago, four of her knights had encountered a caravan on the Appia Way. The traders reporting they had been attacked by some fifty brigands. With an intact caravan, the story would have seemed absurd had her knights not indeed found fifty men, their wrists bound and trailing the second to last wagon in two secure lines. They also found in the lead wagon, exhausted and dirty, the young man the traders all declared had been their savior.

The leader of the caravan recounted how they had found the young man wandering down the road several days earlier, speaking in a tongue none of them could understand and looking very frustrated but otherwise quite polite when approached. They had invited him to share their campfire that night. In the morning he simply picked up his pack and his parasol and continued walking down the road. They thought little of it until late in the afternoon when they came upon another wagon, broken down and blocking the road. Three men apparently working on replacing a damaged wheel and then the ruse revealed as a group of riders approached the rear of the caravan, blocking them both front and back and another forty riders on the ridge ahead. A complete and inescapable trap.

Or so it seemed until the young wanderer reappeared. Panache could make little sense of the statements by witnesses. Some thought he must have been some sort of warrior mage. Others certain that he was an avatar sent by one of the gods. All agreed that the young man, alone and with only his parasol, took on and defeated the entire gang of bandits. Every sword strike expertly parried, the bandits overwhelmed by a strength and violence beyond any normal man until the last bandit lay unconscious and then the stranger simply pressed a finger against the wagon blocking the road and it shattered like a clay pot. He then collapsed as from exhaustion. The caravaners made room for him to rest in one of their wagons as they resumed towards Italica.

With the stranger resting comfortably in Countess Fulmar's mansion, Panache sought clues as to his identity. His clothes were of a style not native to the area but he carried a tool that, though clearly broken, reminded Panache of devices carried by Itami's people. In her brief attempt to question him, she shared the young man's frustration as he seemed confused by her speech and she was completely unable to comprehend his words in return. Except that the language reminded her of the tongue spoken by the 'Green Men'.

This is why Panache had sent her best available rider to go to Alnus and find Itami. If the language the stranger spoke was the same as that of Itami's people, then he would be able to ask the man how he came to be on the Appia Way. If his was a different tongue, then perhaps the young mage Lelei Lalena could discern his speech as the girl had a remarkable affinity for languages.

It was for this reason that Panache was very relieved to see Itami and his people accompanied by Lelei, the elven girl Tuka, and Rory Mercury.

"Ah! Sir Itami. You have your healer with you." Panache regarded Sergeant Kurokawa with a slight smile. "That is good. Our guest does not appear to have suffered any wounds in the battle and we're fairly certain he is only suffering from exhaustion. Of course, no one knows how long he had been wandering the Way."

"I'd like to examine him now."

"Certainly. Mamina will take you in. She has been in charge of his care since he arrived." The Bunny maid curtsied to Kurokawa and gestured for her to follow. After they had left the room, Panache smirked. "Mamina seems rather interested in him. "She then noticed Rory eyeing the room where the stranger was staying.

"He is not of Emroy." Rory said plainly. "None of the bandits were killed?"

"None," Panache confirmed.

"Battle without blood is not Emroy's way."

"What about another god?"

"The gods are not known for their mercy or compassion. I am as intrigued as you are."

"Did he have any weapons?" Itami asked.

"Only that..." Panache pointed to the parasol resting against the wall next to the door to the stranger's room. "It took two men just to carry it in."

Rory smiled, picking it up and appreciating its weight and balance. "His strength is definitely impressive for a human. If he is; indeed, human."

Presently, Kurokawa stepped out and addressed Itami and Panache. "He's awake if you want to talk to him," she told Itami.

"He speaks Japanese?"

"Same as you or me. Though he seems very confused about his surroundings."

Itami nodded and he, Rory, Panache, Tuka, and Lelei followed Kurokawa into the guest room. Kurokawa addressed the young man. "This is Lieutenant Itami. He would like to ask you a few questions."

The young man looked at Itami with an intense gaze. Everyone was taken aback in surprise as he practically jumped out of bed to grab onto Itami's collar.

"Can you tell me? WHERE IS FURINKAN?!"

I've been thinking a bit about a RWBY crossover as well. But rather than taking most of the original story, it'd take just the base premise. I.e. the gate connects to 'random point on earth' on our side. On the other though? Grimm Darklands.

Mostly the interest stems from the implications of a Grimm invasion and the potential counter invasion. The eventual contact with local villages etc. Could also be very interesting I believe. Don't have much of a plot planned out though, and still deciding whether story or quest format would be more interesting.

I think you'd need to spend some serious time thinking about how the nations of Earth would react. Consider the following:
  • The Grimm are, effectively, self-propelled murderbots. They don't care about losses they only care about killing humans who feel terror.
  • If the Gate opens up in a big city (Tokyo from canon!Gate or New York or London or Beijing) then the Grimm are going to carve a bloody swath through the civilians.
  • Conventional military tactics are not going to be highly effective. Grimm shrug off the equivalent of modern-day bullets. Only things like explosive rounds, anti-materiel rifles, artillery strikes, or air-to-surface bombs / missiles are likely to kill them outright.
  • This also looks like an alien invasion. The odds of getting international support is quite high. Even modern day rivals like Russia and the U.S. are likely to work together. (So if Moscow was getting invaded the U.S. would be donating supplies at the very least.)
So with that in mind, eventually the Earth would organize enough to push the Grimm back through the Gate - mostly because the Grimm probably cannot spawn here on Earth.

With huge civilian casualties, enemies they cannot fight directly, and limited signs of civilization on the other side, why would the U.N. not push a nuke through and try to seal the Gate that way? (Yes, there will be fall out on Earth, but if the options are limited fall out or leaving the Gate open, which is the better solution?)

You know, unless one buys Japan's paper thin logic that the Gate Invasion and counter-incursion are an internal matter, I think the term "Special Region" is a bit lacking. I know that the locals refer to the continent as Falmart but do they ever give a name to the entire world?

...The locals or Japs? Because if it's the locals most likely consider Falmart as their entire world, except if The Empire or some local coastal kingdoms actually makes trades with other continent.

If Japs, then... uh.... I draw blank.

You aren't wrong. Remember that Japan was trying to lay claim to everything on the other side of the Gate. They specifically didn't want any other nation involved, invested, or trying to carve out pieces of Falmart for themselves.

Note I have no idea what the people of Earth would call it. I assume some form of "the other side" until they got the locals to tell them what they called it. (And they might keep with the "original" name if it takes too long to find out that the locals call it Falmart. Social inertia is a thing.)

The Japanese seem stuck on calling it 'The Special Region' because giving it any other identity would undermine the logic that the whole thing is an internal matter.

I certainly see your point on the locals' POV.

So for fan stories involving other nations, I propose that the world of the Gate be dubbed 'Janus' in honor of the Roman god of gates, and beginnings and endings. In Roman tradition, the gates to the temple of Janus were kept open when the Empire was at war and closed during the few short periods of peace.

Appropriate, I think.

I got an idea for the gate series:

Ok, lets say that the Gate jietai is going on as usual. Investigating, wanking, bombing the shit out of enemies, getting resources, when all of a sudden, the sky above them ripples, then opens up to show this:

screaming out: This is the TSAB! You are all under arrest for negligent usage of a magical artifact, unauthorized opening of gates between worlds, war crimes, usage of superior technology to oppress weaker natives, and for bad writing!

That actually would be rather interesting. The implications on both sides of the Gate of a multi-planetary political and military body that is dedicated to dealing with inter-dimensional shenanigans and is very cross with the both of them would be fascinating.

Yes indeed.

Now, how about this. This is a world that, if not under direct command under the tsab, at least is known to them. They know there are minor magic users. They either work with the king to uplift, or haven't told them yet. They know there are magic entities known as gods here.

Then all of a sudden, the alarms start ringing. They go to the gate world, and what do they find? The 'Gods' have opened a gateway, opened up an invasion, got countered, and now the Empire's getting their asses kicked. And the japanese seem to be getting ready for colonisation.

So, they gotta go down, stop the fighting, and somehow solve this mess.

"Solve the mess" is... very tall order. For starters, both civs, barring the presence of (arguably) Lost Logia, aren't really ready to accept TSAB presence and administration (one is pretty backward, the other is non-magical). If present themselves 'Murican style, things will get worse. At least for short-time to mid-time being. Remember clusterfuck named Orusea?

PRetty sure Orusea's problems are all internal, with the TSAB keeping their hands off.
It's internal, yes, but some fanon said TSAB presence basically making things more fierce. When TSAB, formally, won't take sides, there's theory that some more unspruculous and/ or well-intentioned personnel basically dipping their toe for some reason....

Or, say, a tsab personnel finding those bandits, then deciding to step in.

Guys. What about this. The lost logia doesn't fall into earth. It falls onto Falmart.
Even then, at maximum, TSAB should be doing their operation semi-clandestine. They were, at least in my view, very similar with Star Trek Federation, in that they supposed to not interfering with developing civilization. This is why, even when dealing with Book of Darkness, their presence only consist of single ship, and only extend their information to their operatives legal guardians, and not Earth Nation government as a whole.

So GATE-Earth and GATE-Fantasy World/Falmart/Whatever-the-hell are both somewhat shitty places. If you were unfortunate enough to end up as a self-insert in this horrible set of universes, would you rather go vanilla human or would you rather the BROB hit you with a Stand Arrow or give you a Class Card or something?

Honest Question, ya know?

Who in their right mind would go vanilla human if there were other choices?o_O

I think this only counts for worlds that don't have active and prevalent use of magic, although I'm not which side Falmart would fall on for that.
Nah, there is enough evidence in the background that they need enough of a society development to at least muck around in multi-dimensional stuff before they contact them. So, ironically, both Falmart and Earth in GATE would now count as needing to be contacted.
