Fyre, Fyre, Burning Skitter

Anyone ever wondered what sort of power the vial that created echidna and genesis would have given if it wasn't split?
My guess would be power-copying projections. Or maybe projections that can "steal" powers for their master.

I'm pretty sure Genesis had a full vial. It was Oliver that split a vial with Nicole.

I'm kinda surprised there wasn't more problems when Noelle Echidna'd vial capes. Maybe there would have been longer term of they had lasted.
What might be interesting is if the vial shard buds are fed power by Noelle's shard? So, they are not dependent on the undeployed vial shard, they've been sorta budded off, for their power...

not sure about an alt power for could ((Coil?)) but any clone would be blabbing all of his secrets and plans that's for sure. Easiest way to hurt him.
A set of cloned Coils could give Noelle a massive tactical advantage, as she can choose what are effective survival strategies? It's even possible some might have strategic uses, in terms of figuring-out a route to healing her?

Coil wants control of BB, is entirely self-centred, arguably his clones don't want him to get that, might be more considerate of others? Want the best for everyone? Certainly, want a better life for Noelle.

A... disagreement between a somewhat healed Noelle, with loadsa Coil tools, and FyreBug Skitter could be... exciting.

I believe Mist of Rainbows (aka Mist of Shadows) wrote an entire YAHF on TTH (2014?), where Xander 'does' BtVS Halloween as someone who drank the whole vial... DogbertCarroll wrote a (2015) fanfic of the fanfic called The Plagiarist, which was their (arguably better) take on this. Neither are (from memory) 'complete', and are at least on long-term hiatus - you never know when DBC might suddenly add a new chapter, to a story untouched for years, though.

Warning: MoR stories can suddenly go seriously X-rated, for no obvious reason; DBC can go somewhat X-rated, but you tend to get a lot more warning. TTH seems to default to an '18' rating, and has a '21' rating, you need to enable to read some stuff, for good reasons.

Except that Noelle's shard is also an undeployed vial shard. If anything, that would just cause Noelle's shard to run out of power far faster.

Actually that brings up another thought. The majority of current vials are a blend of one or more harvested shards and the "balance" shard that resulted in more reliable, but weaker powers. That implies the balance shard is connected to all of those parahumans and so is likely expending power faster than the shards that are only connected to a single person.

What happens to all of those vial capes when the balance shard runs out of juice? Do at least some of them suddenly start mutating?

Noelle has got Division, big-time, and uses it, on the shard-level, to do forced-budding. If this was a Thinker get-a-variant-power-in-a-hurry trick, and the buds were intended to mostly be short-lifespan 'tests', feeding them external power might make sense? Tapping power from other shards, like those of Warrior capes (i.e. those with deployed shards) imprisoned, within Noelle, might be do-able?

BTW, all this about using the DNA of capes is probably Cauldron early poor theorising, as all the DNA logically does is provide a marker/flag for a shard to recognise a host to dimensionally link to. If needed, then forcing growth of a Corona Pollentia/Gemma.

Is the Balance shard doing anything, except, maybe, a start-up healing and making the cape look prettier?

If not, power requirements might be pretty low...

...

Bottom-line, interesting bit of this, for me, is... 'fun' interactions for a Taylor Fyre-ing on all four cylinders...

The 9 are still alive I think, but only until Taylor can show them all the fyre bees. That'll be hot!
Feeding Bakida and/or Coil to Noelle of the Travellers might produce some... novel results. Variations on power manifestations. What would different hacks at 'instant power manifestation' give? What would changes to Coil's power give? As I understand it, the clones are loyal and seriously opposed to the previous aims of their original. How might that evolve?
I think combining the two might be interesting. Feeding Jack Slash, Crawler, Mannequin, Hatchet Face, William Manton, Cherish, and possibly Shatterbird to Noelle might produce some interesting results.
I'm not so sure about Bonesaw given that she could be turned once Jack was dead, and similarly for Burnscar who I believe tried to leave the S9 after being kidnapped by them only to be told she had a kill order and also tried to defect to Faultline's crew IIRC. Burnscar also had power induced psychosis and had willingly turned herself into a mental institution for help as she basically had a split personality between Mimi and Burnscar.
I'm not sure I recall enough about how Shatterbird joined to know if she was brainwashed by Jack's secret power or if she was evil enough to begin with for a Helm of Opposite Alignment to turn her Good. I just recall she had a vial, accidentlaly killed thousands on what was essentially her trigger event even if she drank a vial instead of a normal trigger, and somehow wound up in the Slaughterhouse Nine.

Can you name which story that was? I don't recall it at all. If you skip over some of her more squicky parts she has some interesting concepts.
Obviously you can't link to the story, just give the name of which one.

I think it was 'Xander and his angels'... Be warned, story arguably starts X-rated. Long time since I read it, but, I don't think it's one of the more... extreme MoR stories...

An encounter between that Xander and a reasonably smart Taylor could get... very messy.

I saw "badass Danny with a bat", and I thought of bat-revenge guy.

Just hitting people with a baseball bat... is a bit limited. Now, if it had a wider range of capabilities, that'd be far more fun!

(*cough* percussive education *cough*)

So, just what range of abilities could a hybrid Enchanted/Tinker-tech (aluminium) baseball bat have? Ignoring boring things like a generic Wizarding World magic wand?

There must be something...

Bah! A simple baseball bat is quite a versatile tool! Not just there for hitting, a skilled action movie protagonist can use them to hook people behind the knees and flip them, shove people around at further ranges than just their arm's reach, as a lever to catapult enemies over railings, as a noise maker to distract people (The aluminium ones are better for that), they're good for parrying blades and blunt melee weapons, tie it to a rope as an improvised grappling hook, and of course, the most important, as a cane to help you walk away after you've gotten absolutely wrecked beating up all those thugs.

Nah, thematically, getting hit by the "Bat of Doom" should increase visual and auditory acuity; increase visual and auditory sensitivity; increase visual and auditory spectrum range; increase general intelligence; and increase pain threshold. Oh, and inspire fear of the Bat of Doom and its wielder.

We do know what the Balance shard is meant to do, at least--It was the core shard of Eden's responsible for analysing Human biology and how to safely connect the requisite "soft" portals required for each parahuman, as well as how to configure both the Manton Limits for this cycle, as well as Eden's own planned avatar. It was never intended to be deployed to a primary host, but instead as a node in the network for all shards to reference and ping when setting up triggers.

If you infer from the rules of Clusters, then working out how Balance figures into things is pretty simple; drinking a vial with mixed components is like having a cluster trigger, with the primary vial component becoming the parahuman's "main" power, the one they trigger with before pings.
As a result, that power gets roughly analogous percentages of bandwidth, so a vial with 49% Balance, 51% Pyro will have Pyro designated the "main" power, but will only recieve half the possible power/complexity throughput they would have if they had drunk 100% Pyro, but will also recieve a major "secondary" power which prevents the harm, mutation or other downsides (Manton Limit included) that come with Cauldron Vials--with the caveats that if deployed properly, Pyro would reference Balance regardless, just on the backend, and it would also have limits imposed to prevent certain use cases.

So this leaves us with two possible conclusions--depending on how power is then handled on the Shardside.
1. Balance and the other Shard(s) involved operate as intended, as Balance was mostly configured before Eden was killed, and once pinged it does not provide further power or processing to the parahuman, and the other shard handles everything according to Balance's parameters.
Thus, the other shard will run out of power long before Balance ever does, and even if it did, preexisting parahumans are already set up, and thus are unaffected.

2. Balance does not correct correctly, and ends up providing active power or processing on its end, providing what will nigh certainly be a lesser power draw than the primary shard, likely still lasting longer than Pyro, QA, or the like, but having the possibility of running dry.
What happens after that depends on exactly how each parahuman is set up, the details of their power, and likely a million other factors which simplify down to;
A. The parahuman's Manton effects weaken or dissapear, resulting in, for example, no long being proof to their own pyrokinesis, leftover mutations or unrevertable adaptations if you were Aegis, generally, Broken Trigger style bad times, which if they're lucky, will be on the Case-53 end rather than the "instant death" end.
B. The parahuamn's power weakens, as the other shard takes up the slack when Balance runs out, providing less power to the actual ability in exchange for retaining safety features.
C. Possibly the parahuman's shard likes them, and has decided it's time to ride or die--like some Clusters have powers that fluctuate by alocating to an internal pool or other external factors, the shard hands the throttle and safety gague to them and says "Have at it boss!". Likely resulting in a power that is weakened but Manton Limited, unless the host decides to punch the pedal down and throttle up to Full Power, damn the consequences.

I do agree that an adventure or two of Erwin's would be nice and that the author fiat "whole story" of any Erwin would spoil the mystique and fun.
I think the way Great Grand-Uncle Schimmelhorn's Toolbox did it was the way to do it. Don't show his past adventures, show him when he decides part way into the story, "I guess my retirement is taking a vacation while I go and show some people they aren't nearly as smart or sneaky as they think they are."

Oh, no, people don't hire Erwin; he just shows up. In the final boss room. Holding a remote detonator and the last macguffin he knew you wouldn't be able to get, because you weren't smart or sneaky enough. Saying "took you long enough, didn't it?"
And, "Don't worry, my accountant has already deducted my fee from your bank accounts"?

(Got to pay for (the rental of) all that beer, sometime?)

((How do you know when you're really in trouble? When he sucks his teeth, and tells you your problem will need a 'tailor-made' solution. Spelled with a 'y'...))

Hmm. I was thinking. Might take a few portal creations/test interdim teleports to get BB. So, where might FyreBug Skitter visit on her way back?

Maybe Dungeon Keeper Ami (warning: ~900kwords, last updated 2021...) would be worth considering?

(Hint: Ami Mizuno isn't just Sailor Mercury any more...)
Pity the new job doesn't come with any training... Or, a skilled mentor... Or, a manual...

I'll throw in a 'before' picture:

How many magical types have palmtop computer and a HUD?

So, what is a 'Valued Trusted Customer Please Don't Kill Me Discount'?

EDIT:

BTW, seemed sensible to link Dungeon Keeper (1997 game).

You know what would be a real cruel joke? Just as Taylor is stepping through the portal home, her "ride" gets hijacked by Louise's Summoning rite.

Can you just imagine the absolutely peak levels of "done with this" she could achieve? Y'know, microseconds before incinerating the whole damn castle?

While this almost certainly won't be cannon, I would love to see this written as an omake. I don't have the talent to write it though so I will leave the board clean for someone else to do it
