"So, Dreamer. Does that mean reality warps according to your thoughts?
"
Willow shrugs unhelpfully.
"Something like that," she says vaguely.
"I'm afraid Father wishes me to avoid telling others about my gifts. His martial background shows even here, and with what you've uncovered tonight, I can finally see why."
Your thoughts of further inquiries are thoroughly derailed by Celes's voice. It seems she
finally got past the hold.
"Hi, um, we kinda have a potential Cataclysm-class situation involving Prism's artifact. I don't think it's something urgent enough to send out a huge alert, but if there's anyone who could help us lock it down further, their help would be appreciated. We've kinda ordered the school to keep everyone away for now, staff included.
"
There's the faintest murmur of a reply from the other end of the line.
"Um, summary, every Magical Girl made by Prism's artifact could be asked to join a crusade against literally every human government on our Earth. That includes the dead ones. We checked and we're pretty sure it'd be voluntary, but as naive as some MGs are, there might still be a couple hundred MGs wreaking havoc if things ever go heels-up. And, uh, given as Prism seems to further reinforce narratives, you guys might want to make sure your arrival is a bit overwhelming when you do show up.
"
Another short murmur. You glance back at Willow and see her watching with the same impassive expression as always. The white hair and lack of a smile don't really fit with your image of a Summer fey, but
you're hardly a model magical girl, so you're not going to go pointing any fingers.
"That '
we' is my team and I. Progeny? We were going to come in to register in a few days, but then this whole mess came up while we were trying to change the name of one of their Familiars. Am I supposed to tell you guys powers over the phone, or...?
"
Another unintelligible reply comes and goes.
"Just for the lockdown? That's mine. I can basically order computers around if I already had access rights and Prism's artifact seems to be close enough. Prism's structure too. I told the artifact to revoke the privileges of any other admins and that seems to have gone pretty well, so mark that off as another defense against actually triggering the end of the world.
"
There's a multi-second delay before another, longer response. Celes's expression gradually turns increasingly rueful as the explanation goes on.
"Um, understood. Bye.
"
Your twin hangs up and hangs her head.
"Holy shit I am so glad we called them."
"So it turns out Prism's principal, vice principal, and some of the senior staff already knew about the artifact thing. They called in a possibly-active CC-threat to Cape Countermeasures a bit before we did; with Prism misbehaving, they thought Queen Love was kicking off the crusade thing
now. Anyway, we'll probably be knee-deep in the first battle group—
"
"Riiight about
now,
" an unseen voice finishes cheerfully.
Painfully earned reflexes have you whirling to confront the new threat while Celes turns to cover the blind space behind you. Skye turns to face the voice, but at a far more sedate and relaxed pace.
As you watch, empty air shimmers and reveals fifteen adult Capes surrounded by a glowing green shield. All their costumes are the same dark blue coloration with
CBCC emblazoned on them in yellow lettering. All of them also seem to be wearing different styles of mask beneath blue helmets with transparent faceplates. Faint silver auras envelop the bodies of each and likely provide additional protection.
The moment their invisibility drops, the Capes spread out across the room. Two move to cover the stairs, eight move to different patches of wall and begin using various powers to secure them further, two head for the artifact, and the remaining three look at your little group. You're not sure who was responsible for the sphere of invisibility, who teleported them, or anything else along those lines.
Within fifteen seconds, the basement walls, floor, and ceiling have acquired one layer of blood-red shielding, one layer of some writhing chrome metal, one of overlapping bright golden shields, and likely several more further in. When CBCC wants to secure an area, they really don't mess around.
"You know, I'm starting to think breaking in to access a major Cape-creating artifact was not the best of plans."
"We'll talk about it somewhere more secure. Even if nobody else can hear us, it'll still take some of our attention."
One of the three watching you, a brown-haired hulk of a man with a dark green domino mask, steps forward and holds up one hand in greeting. Judging by the voice, they're the same person who interrupted you earlier.
"Evening, Progeny. You can call me Voltage. Sky-eye already briefed us on what you told the receptionist, but we were already all good to go, so...
" Voltage shrugs.
"Here we are. Is there anything else you can do to help us secure either the artifact or the area around it?
"
You shake your heads as one. Skye elaborates anyway.
"Not unless destroying it is an acceptable solution."
Voltage tilts his head, possibly signaling '
one minute, I'm listening to someone.
'
"A villain tried dropping it in a volcano back in the nineties,
" Voltage relays after the first few seconds.
"Reportedly, the artifact
tried to help destroy itself at that point. All it took was a school-wide festival to fully restore it afterward. Supposedly, it even acquired some extra frilly ribbons and a new layer of neon pink paint. The paint was lead-based and had to be taken off.
"
"Only magical girls,
" you murmur.
"It exists," Skye replies serenely.
"Therefore, it can be destroyed."
Voltage's expression turns a trifle odd. After a slight pause, he turns to you and makes an unspoken, puzzled plea for an explanation. You decide to humor him.
"Conceptual effects
do exist. With a bit of prep work, I do think we or someone else could destroy the artifact altogether. The bigger question is if we
should."
Voltage seems a little put out by your explanation, but seems too polite to say anything about it. After a multi-second delay, he sighs and shakes his head.
"I'm going to have to say no to that. Are you going to need a better justification, or...?
"
"Not really, but as long as there aren't any important revelations in what you were going to say, Prism might help enforce uninterruptible exposition.
"
A murmur of chuckles sweeps around the room. Voltage bows from the waist and momentarily takes on a fake British accent. You think he's trying to imitate a butler of some kind?
"As you wish."
He drops the accent before continuing.
"Prism's current artifact was originally found in some South American ruins dated to about a full thousand years ago. It accepted the head archeologist as an authorized user, she decided abusive parents should have an easier way of getting their kids powers than basically torturing them, and the research team decided to retire and found Prism as we all know it. It took them a few years to figure out the whole crusade possibility, but enough hints here and there eventually painted a pretty ugly picture.
"Here's where it gets problematic. Instead of actually telling CBCC like they're supposed to, Prism's staff merely added extra security and a few lessons on not inherently trusting attractive individuals or multidimensional rulers supposedly supporting positions they agree with. Not informing us is one thing, but neglecting to warn the parents of several thousand children moves this whole mess straight into felony territory. Congratulations, Progeny: You're going to make the news and possibly be called to testify in court.
"
Celes lets out a loud whoop of joy and holds out one hand, palm upward. Having been prepared for some response along those lines, you lightly hit it despite your own lack of enthusiasm. Leaving her hanging would just be mean.
"That was
not the response I was expecting,
" Voltage admits.
"You, uh... You do realize court battles are horribly tedious things, right? Especially ones involving even disgraced public figures. And that's before you go into all the notoriety you'll get from people blaming
you for this whole mess.
"
Celes clasps her hands together and smirks. It takes you a moment to realize there was no delay between seeing an unfamiliar body perform the action and actually associating it with your twin sister. You aren't sure if you should blame that on Mom, Dad, a transformation perk, or some combination of the above.
"Yeah, but we're an up-and-coming Builder team with a desire for nice things. Fame equals merchandising potential equals risk-free money. If we go with a company known for good quality products, speculative resellers will likely buy out our first wave with the expectation of more to come. The name won't help.
"
Voltage frowns and turns to one of the two Capes touching the artifact. You can't actually see their face or mask from where you're standing, but their rough body shape seems to be male.
"Hercule?
"
The Cape in question audibly sighs and answers without looking away from his work.
"Progeny is a deliberate reference to
Progenitor. There's no telling if there's a familial relation or simply referencing one of his more famous actions, but speculating on what Progeny intends is going to attract both attention and challengers. Some people will want to beat them into the ground to '
prove' a lack of relation, some will try making a name for themselves through casual fights or teamups, and some will just want a straight answer. The plan falls apart when you consider how often Progenitor decides to interfere with such bids for fame; Progeny would almost certainly be better off just sticking with the boost they'll get from defusing a PCC situation instead of deliberately fueling speculation."
Celes waves a hand dismissively.
"Progenitor isn't going to bother us any more than he usually does.
"
Half the Capes in the room tense and glance up at the ceiling. It really was as good as an invitation.
"Technically, I should really accept that," Progenitor's voice remarks, making several of the Capes jump.
"Just don't make me send you girls to your room."
"You mean the one you trapped—
"
"Objection withdrawn."
Celes smirks. You look over at Skye and check her for any signs of fear or general unhappiness. As far as you can tell, Progenitor's messages didn't bother her in the slightest.
The other Capes continue their work in stunned silence before Hercule decides to break it.
"I would like to note that this still isn't confirmation," Hercule says mildly. "Deliberately so, I expect. It's fully possible they coordinated with Progenitor ahead of time to, as they say, 'troll' the world. It would match his previous behavior. I expect we'll never truly know until and unless they die. Their names may provide additional evidence, however."
Voltage turn to you and raises one eyebrow, silently inviting you to introduce yourself.
"Something moon, sun, and star themed?" Celes suggests.
"Sun for me, stars for you, moon for Skye. Or anything else cool, really. I didn't plan this far ahead."
OOC Note: Celes may cast the equivalent of three votes for her own favorites if she likes a set well enough. She probably won't, though.
