Hey guys, before voting to help out, remember the idea is for the newbies to get some experience.

...And guys, if you want to check on Satsuki, why not head back to the ship?

Probably because we didn't finish our assignment yet for the day perhaps? We can't really just leave our post when the captain said to continue the mission.
We can ignore the orders though, I doubt the Rebels has anything to pull out against us right now.

Actually, it was Flandre that decided to go down to patrol, remember? The job is observation and only intervention for emergencies.

Do you think we can confiscate the devices? I am curious about the heart shaped one. I think it's an intelligent device like Nanoha's one.

Hmm, maybe we should go visit Lu?

Oh my, Flandre has a poetic side! And she defended the TSAB's actions? Dang, venting that stress must have put her in a good mood.

Remember, Flan's seen what the humans of Breath of Fire IV could get up to. She's seen the Carronade and all of the other atrocities in that world. Humans can do some pretty fuckin' grotesque things.

You know, Flandre is so ridiculously strong that I almost forgot that these are Nanoha-Verse mages and so they are all wearing Barrier Jackets. Which she just tore through like they weren't even there with her bare hands.

Admittedly, the strength of the Jacket depends on the strength of the mage and these probably weren't high class ones.

I think Lutecia is still in the hospital, Satsuki I think is the priority now, we left her unchecked long enough while we are sure Lutecia is safe.

Straight out killing someone through their Barrier Jacket is actually pretty hard. The protection seems to be good for an extra strong hit as it dissolves, which leaves some usually superficial injuries even if you take a massive hit(thus if slammed through buildings, your barrier jacket would probably detonate and leave you horribly bruised rather than a red stain on the first building, but the danger of physical/mass weapons is that they can keep going through that).

Flan ripped through them like they were cosplay.

Flandre has many sides! And it's more that she respects certain people more highly than others. She doesn't agree with TSAB's actions, for pretty much the reasons she gave for respecting them, and she thinks that stretching themselves so thinly is dumb, but she respects the conviction that leads to the Bureau not collapsing entirely within a week.

Heart-sized, not shaped. And the weapons and Devices were moved to a more secure location, even though I forgot to mention it in the update.

Although we have seen high-level mages get shanked right through their Barrier Jackets on at least two occasions (Nanoha and Vita against Type IV Gadget Drones). And apart from mage quality making a difference, there are different styles of Barrier Jacket with different levels of protection - Fate's Sonic Form, IIRC, basically trades the ability to take any sort of hit for the ability to never be hit.

This planet appears to be in a rather dangerous sector. I advise that we clean the rest of the remains and head back to the ship; There may be more assailants around.

First, I want to apologize for the above post, as it is both patronizing and not particularly helpful with regards to the discussion. I was grumpy and bad-tempered when I read your post, and I think I read something into it that wasn't necessarily your intent. I'm sorry.

Now, that said, I do still have an issue with what I think your point actually is. A Barrier Jacket consists of two or three layers of protection - Field effects (primarily for environmental effects, AFAIK); Barrier effects (disperse and deflect most incoming attacks); and possibly reinforced physical material. There is also, at least in some cases, the Reactive Purge seen in Nanoha's first fight with Vita in A's, which appears to be a last-ditch effect unrelated to the normal defenses. An AMF disrupts spells cast within the field itself, as well as degrades spells cast from outside it, but in both cases you're still talking about high-level mages with active protections cast from outside the AMF, and Vita in particular would be much more familiar with AMF due to her history and the knowledge that she's actually going to be fighting inside one. So, yes, there would have been weakening of the Barrier Jackets' protections, but those should have been to the outer layers of protections first, and considering the strength and capabilities of the mages in question, it should not have been to such a degree that the Barrier Jackets lost core functionality.

There is, also, the curious fact that neither event triggered a Reactive Purge, which seems odd. My favored headcanon is that Reactive Purges were disabled during those encounters due to the nature of the territory - Nanoha, IIRC, was in a situation with opponents of unknown capabilities, and so depleting your defenses in such a manner was considered unwise; and Vita was going into an area where she would be outnumbered if any engagement occurred, at which point the same logic applies. The only other possibility I've come up with is that the Reactive Purges didn't trigger because the Type IV Gadget Drones attacked by surprise, but since a large point of automated and reactive defenses like Barrier Jackets and Reactive Purges is that the user doesn't have to know about the incoming attack, that doesn't seem likely. Possible, since even with the ambiguity of magic and what it can do, MGLN still seems to try to keep things realistic, so unpredictable events may simply be too difficult to account for with the programming of Devices, but it's not one I'm really attached to.

Anyway.

Votes are locked. Update will probably take me a couple hours to write, if I don't get interrupted.

"Alright, everyone, come along," you say as you tap Laevateinn against the floor. That wakes them from their stupor and they grudgingly rise to their feet to follow you. If they're at all surprised by your decision to lock them up, they don't show it, and you separate them into three rooms to keep the numbers manageable for when they're taken out by the Bureau. That done, you return to the bridge and use Laevateinn to burn away the bodies. You may have gone a little overboard, but after checking the slightly melted floor and scorched walls of the hallway, nothing appears to have been damaged. For the filth in the corner, you simply find a mop and cleaner and take care of it the regular way. Chores done, you settle down to wait.

Of course, it's quite boring, so you study the two Devices while you wait. The staff isn't quite as simple as you'd initially taken it to be. One end has a hole in the tip, and carefully examining the polished wooden exterior you find a small stud that, when pressed, extends a short stone blade from the hole. A bit of further examination near the stud reveals that a small panel of wood detaches from the staff, although you don't see anything underneath it apart from a metallic core, so it's probably just the first step to remove the whole wooden casing. You shrug and replace the panel; you probably could put it back together after taking it apart, but it's not like you could use it for anything, anyway. You set it aside and take a look at the orb. It's quite heavy for its size, but not unreasonably so. The carvings don't make any sense to you, at least not immediately, but one section seems to have a different sort of marking, so on a whim you take out a sheet of paper and a pencil to get a rubbing of the carvings. The different marking looks like an identifier - a name … and the carving as a whole could, maybe, be a map. Or else the carvings are something to do with magic, and the identifier is a code to do something with it. Regardless, not something you can really use for anything; you set it and the rubbing aside and look over the various consoles of the ship, trying to figure out if there's any reason for their placement and trying to guess what most of them do. You already know the commander's chair, communications, piloting, and at least some of the weapons, but there were seven other people in the room. Maybe navigation, if the pilot doesn't take care of that? Hmm ….

All too soon, however, another garbled squawk announces someone trying to talk to you, and you turn to see who it is. No one you recognize - a woman with a similar uniform as Captain Sentra. She blinks and takes a moment to focus on you. "You are - Flandre Scarlet?" You nod and smile.

"I am. Who are you?" She blinks, momentarily confused, before chuckling amusedly.

"Captain Jeanne Avensis, of the Hildegard. We're carrying the relief crew for the ship you, ah, captured. Is everything fine down there?" You giggle.

"Yep! Prisoners are locked up, command area is clean, anti-magic is off, and I haven't pressed any buttons, so if anything's broken it's not my fault." She gives you an odd look and you shrug expressively. "So they'll be coming down soon?"

"Yes. Just a minute or two." You stretch and look out the viewport. The sun appears to be starting its descent below the horizon, so Satsuki should be up … soon, anyway.

"So, has Captain Sentra's ship landed yet? I should go check things out and see if they need me for anything." She frowns and looks at something off to the side for a moment before turning back to you.

"They're beginning their descent now. They'll take a half-hour to land, but it's quite a way from where you are right now; we can teleport you to the airfield they'll be landing at, if that's alright." You nod again; considering how quickly the pirate ship landed, a half-hour seems much too long - but if they have to land to conduct repairs, there may be external damage and they don't want to risk anything going wrong. "Okay, then after the relief crew gets there they'll send you over. Good luck." You wave and the screen cuts out. You head back to the teleporter room in time for the first of the new crewmen to arrive; he twitches a heavy, curved sword up when he first sees you, but checks the motion before he can make any actually aggressive movements. You raise an eyebrow at him and he frowns down at your dress. You follow his gaze and cluck your tongue; you'd rather forgotten about the bullet holes, particularly since ignoring injuries is something that unnerves most humans. Oops … well, you still have those dresses. You shrug and he shakes his head.

You sit at a table, watching the ground crew swarm over part of the Mettia. Satsuki stands beside you, obviously relieved to have missed the excitement and glad that she hasn't had to visit the hospital - she's worried about being near injured people, even though she isn't hungry. Most of the Mettia's crew are sleeping the sleep of the exhausted, but Captain Sentra and another officer were specifically requested to speak with someone from the local government.

"… So do you think you weren't feeling good because you were up in space where 'day and night' don't really exist?" You sit back and glance at Satsuki. She frowns, thinking.

"Maybe. Or maybe I just got confused about what time it 'was,' since it was night when we got to Mid-Childa, and it was day when we got here. Like jet lag, I guess? But I feel fine now!" You nod, bored. Not only is there nothing for you to do, when you asked the captain if he wanted you for anything, he told you to stay 'available' in case they wanted you to answer questions. So unless something else happens - a very, very unlikely situation - you're supposed to just wait here. Then you see something that makes you pay attention. You recognize those two. They're wearing uniforms, now, olive green and of a different cut from the rest of the Bureau's uniforms, and they're neat and clean, but they're the watchers from the hospital. Why would they have been trying to keep their presence a secret, though? Even if they're allies and not members of the Bureau itself, hiding like that doesn't make sense. They walk past the building you're in, heading for the Mettia.

What do you do?

[ ] Catch up to them and ask them what they're doing.

[ ] You were told to wait, so unless someone wants you for something, that's what you'll do. (Skip)

[ ] Other?

DM Note: The Skip option is exactly what it sounds like - it's a fast-forward to the next interesting event, either something happening or the mission ending. And, yes, I kind of … skipped some potentially fun interactions toward the end. That would be because I just blanked for about fifteen minutes and couldn't figure out what/how to write that. So, uh … sorry. :(

We should really find a way to train Satsuki, she is so cute and shy but that won't really help her, seeing how much Flandre get into trouble.
I will vote for this unless I'm convinced otherwise.

Well this seems interesting, I wonder what they're up to and why they're in uniforms now.

I should clarify - and will edit the update to reflect this - but they are not wearing TSAB uniforms.
Oh, it's inter-departmental rivalry? They're local government agents or something like that?

I mean, provided they didn't somehow escape custody and come back in different clothes to blend in.

Probably. I was simply saying Gadget Drones probably used their anti-magic abilities to help prevent barrier jacket failure failsafes from activating properly, which blows from Flandre wouldn't do. But I wasn't saying that was a flaw in your writing, as I was taking it as a sign the pirates are weak mages and Flandre is really strong.

Though some of your elaborations seem to imply their anti-magic equipment might be interfering with their own barrier jackets which is... suboptimal. Though, it's not too bad a drawback if your enemy is a mage with weak physical abilities who you outnumber with physically larger crew members. Unfortunately for them Flandre wasn't a standard child prodigy, if there is such a thing.
