[X] Ask Saber if she had something important to say or if she just wanted to make sure we left.
"O mighty King of Knights," you begin, voice dripping with scorn, "have you some vital piece of information to impart, or have you merely come to rattle your saber to speed us on our way?" Saber jumps and turns to face you, a tangle of emotions on her face – anger, embarrassment, perhaps worry or fear. She locks her expression quickly, however, and turns back toward Ilya, who is standing in front of the open car, looking in, and Sella, who is glaring back at her.
"Illyasviel." After a moment, Ilya turns around to look expressionlessly at the Servant. "… What you said – is it true? Sakura will die?" Ilya's eyes flicker almost imperceptibly to meet your own before she responds.
"Of course she will. She has begun taking in the defeated Servants, has become the Lesser Grail. Once she has enough of them, she will die – if not truly, then as the person she is. Humans weren't meant to be able to hold the power of the Grail … I wonder what that old man did to her?" You frown – there's something you're missing, and Ilya has deliberately not brought it up with you. Not that you've been exactly forthcoming with all your secrets, of course, but …. Saber's fists clench.
"Is there nothing that can be done?" She almost sounds like she's begging – hopeful, but not expectant. Ilya shrugs.
"Not without a lot of work, knowing what was done to her, and her own consent." A magnificent, malefic smile crosses her face and Saber takes a step back. "Besides, why should I want to help her? If she is the Grail in my place, then I don't have to die to finish this stupid War. I can do things, plan for the future, enjoy myself knowing that my lifespan can be measured in months rather than days. I can win this War and see things through to the end instead of losing myself when the strain of holding the Servants in me becomes too much." She takes a step forward, intimidating Saber into taking another step back in spite of herself. You stare at Ilya, too stunned by the sudden revelation to do anything, and her demeanor changes once more – her smile fades and her eyes lose their sharpness, becoming cold and hard, and Saber inhales sharply. Ilya isn't radiating menace or ill-will, only implacable human determination, the kind that sees vampires fall under a mountain of corpses. "That's all, isn't it? The next time we meet – if we meet again," she clarifies, glancing at you, "Berserker will kill you." Saber stiffens, then her shoulders slump and she looks down. Ilya shakes her head slightly and returns to her normal self, looks at you, and turns back to her car. You put your parasol away and dart forward, picking her up again and settling in the deep seat with her on your lap. Sella fastens the safety belt and closes the door.
"Ilya –" You hesitate, not sure which part you want her to explain first, and she sighs.
"I told you, didn't I? Homunculi all have tradeoffs, and one of the most common is lifespan." You frown as Sella gets in. "I was never going to live very long, and summoning Berserker so early probably reduced that by a lot. I'll be lucky to survive another year even if I survive this War." That's … you hate it, but that's how it is. Fairies reincarnate almost eternally, magicians live forever, humans have short lifespans … and homunculi have even shorter ones, apparently. You can't muster up the rage to go against it, and even if you could, there's nothing here that you want to lash out against. Ilya presses herself against you; it's not uncomfortable, and it seems like she's just doing it for the closer physical presence, but ….
"Okay. Then, what about the Grail? How is Sakura becoming the 'Lesser Grail,' and why is she doing it in your place? I was under the impression that you owned the Grail." Ilya sighs.
"The Grail is mine because … well. To start with, the Lesser Grail is the container for the power of Servants. Normally, a dead Servant will return to the Throne of Heroes, but the Lesser Grail stops that temporarily. For the first three Heaven's Feels, the Lesser Grail was an actual cup, but that was damaged in the third War and so for the last War and this one, the Lesser Grail was placed inside a homunculus – something that could take care of itself. My mother for the last one, myself in this one. I wonder how the Matous managed to do this … maybe they got something they weren't supposed to at the end? Too bad the old man's dead, I guess." She stretches her arms forward, then slumps leans back so her head is resting on your shoulder. "The Greater Grail is the actual mechanism for wishing that people are fighting over, and it needs enough energy to be activated. That's why the Lesser Grail exists – Servants provide the energy, but without the Lesser Grail to hold them in this world until enough energy is ready to fully activate the Greater Grail, nothing would happen. And as for the Grail being mine … the Heaven's Feel was originally set up by the Einzbern family to recover our True Magic. True immortality through the materialization of the soul. That's what the Grail was originally, wasn't it? Not a wish, but immortality – that was the gift of the Holy Grail, and that's what we had. We, the Einzberns, are the owners of the Holy Grail." You rest your head against hers.
"And if you win, you will have your Magic once again, won't you?" But in order for her to win, she has to defeat all the Servants, including Caster … or does she? After all, there was an eighth Servant … if enough of his essence survived. Ilya straightens, forcing you to lift your head as well.
"Anyway, we'll be coming up on Ryuudou Temple pretty soon; you should go back." You frown; she seems to be trying to convince herself that it would be best to cut off relations with you.
