Berserker springs forward with a roar and slams his weapon down, but you're already in the air above him and drift back, laughing. "Oh? I get to fight the mighty Heracles once again!" Laevateinn appears in your hand as your grin widens. Sometimes a bit of bravado is good to start "It is my pleasure, Lady Illyasviel!" You stop paying attention to her as Berserker leaps straight at you, rock-slab arcing toward you. You dodge left, thrusting with your gift to deflect the Servant's attack as you pass under it. Fighting in the air like this is so advantageous … but you need to descend to really fight. You could bring out Loki, but the Barrier Jacket will only matter if he lands a heavy hit, and if he does that, he'll probably collapse it again, and whether your Jacket is up or not you'll probably be down for long enough that he'll be able to finish you. Maybe you should go after him before you go snooping around, if you do something like this again.

"What do you think you're doing? The door's right there! Hell, there are windows you can fit through!" You cluck your tongue as Berserker lands and turns to meet your diving charge; his counter misses you, fortunately, but his off-hand deflects your own attack, so you only tear a jagged line across his arm as pass him.

"I'm fighting the Einzbern champion for the right to enter the castle, of course. Oh, don't worry - if I don't think I can beat him before the time limit, I'll simply enter the castle. But I must make a serious attempt, Headless. It's a matter of principle." You spin around and slam to a halt, then charge as he leaps at you again. Your thrust knocks his attack out of line before he can fully commit and you spin around, flying backward, to watch him recover. His strengths are your strengths magnified, but he isn't without weaknesses. He's quick on his feet and enormously agile for his size, but he needs the ground to change direction, so he's slower to move around. You make two more inconclusive passes, then turn and watch him for a moment. He doesn't plan - he finds out where you are and makes a direct attack on you. Not much of a help out here in the open, but if you ever fight in an enclosed area where you can break line of sight easily, it should be easy to beat him. He charges again, running instead of leaping, and you hurtle forward to meet him. He abandons his charge with perfect timing and swings the slab of a weapon down; you meet it with Laevateinn held at both ends. The edge of his weapon chips as it slams into your gift, and your left hand burns with pain as the force of the impact drives Laevateinn into your palm, but his attack is stopped. You hold him for a moment, then slip to your left and let go of your gift with your right hand, and as his weapon crashes to the ground you slip around it and claw at the side of his face as you zoom past.

Your fingers sting as you retreat higher into the sky and you suck on them for a moment as Berserker slowly turns to look at you. Your claws certainly penetrated his skin, but you didn't draw any blood, and you actually left two of your nails behind! You circle around to keep the humans in your view, but they seem content to simply watch, at least for now. You focus back on Berserker and consider your bag of tricks. Your clones would let you attack him easily, since he wouldn't be able to fight all four of you with the same attack. Danmaku might help, but it would probably be more use as a distraction … if it even served as that, seeing as he didn't react when you clawed at his face. Hm … if he only reacts to threats … you could probably have your clones carry him away if you really needed to, since he's not too heavy to lift. Less than four minutes. You hold Laevateinn two-handed and swoop down at Berserker, spiraling around him and making quick thrusting attacks. You can't attack his front, as you're too busy parrying his attacks, and you can't get solid hits anywhere else, merely driving the tip of your gift against his flesh and tearing open shallow surface wounds as you whirl about in a bloody dance. Laevateinn whips up to deflect an attack and you fly straight into his open hand as he slaps at you with his free hand. You slide along his fingers and skim just over the ground, then hurl yourself into the air as he follows through with his attack. He reaches the apex of his second leap well below you, and you cough up the blood that welled up in your throat during your escape. You draw ragged breaths as your heart recovers enough to start beating again and your ribs begin knitting themselves together. Your clothes will need mending - an easy enough thing to accomplish, thanks to your sister's gift - but that's the price you pay for not using Loki. On the other hand, if you'd been using Loki, you probably would have taken an even heavier hit … you wouldn't have tried to escape and would have taken a heavy hit during your recovery. You shake your head and derisively flick Laevateinn to the side, intercepting and shattering the crystalline blade that flashes toward you.

The problem isn't so much that he's more capable than you - he's a little quicker, maybe, and he's certainly stronger with his attacks - but that he's more massive and he has much better reach than you. You can't get close to make an effective attack without letting him make attacks of his own … at least, not at a speed you can really fight at. If you charged him, you could probably get a hit in, especially if you're invisible and he doesn't know precisely where you are. But he seemed to know where you were when you attacked him invisibly the first time, even if he was too slow to respond effectively to your charge. If you try to fight him close-in, he can probably respond more effectively, and if you charge, you might be able to cripple or kill him … but he's Heracles. Normal heroes have an annoying tendency to not die when they're supposed to; if you actually make a lethal hit against him, you're probably going to be stuck long enough for him to get at least one good hit in. If Deis were around, or Berserker were alone, it might be worth it. But alone, when his Master and her servants are watching? No, it's too risky, and your attacks so far have only resulted in superficial injuries to him. That means you have to go with plan B.

The humans are on the stairs, away from the door, and you slip to the side and plummet toward the landing. Berserker roars and charges after you, but he's not fast enough to catch you. You skid against the stone floor in front of the double door and yank one open; the halberdier - Leysritt? - is starting to follow you, but the other two haven't even managed to finish turning by the time you slip through and into the opulent entry hall. You float above the stairs and wait for them to follow you inside. Almost long enough for you to poke your head out the door to see if something happened, the halberdier enters, followed by the mage, and with the doors flung wide, Illyasviel Einzbern walks in, followed by her growling, glowering Servant.

"I made it inside in less than six minutes," you say as they watch you silently, "and if we keep fighting here, there won't be much left of the castle when we're done." You wouldn't even mind … much … since it isn't your home, but you keep that to yourself - what you spoke is self-evident, but adding that would make it a threat.

"Hmph! You couldn't even kill Berserker." You raise an eyebrow, but she's not watching you. Instead, she's staring at Laevateinn, almost glaring at it, and after a few moments you put it away, startling her. She shakes her head and looks at you. "I don't mind if you stay for a bit, but you have to come down from there. Hmm, and we'll have to do something about your clothes, too …."

"Lady Illyasviel!" You descend to the ground and smile. You have more dresses you can wear, of course, but it might be rude to say you don't need her help. Illyasviel gasps and claps her hands.

"That's right! Sella, some tea, please. Leysritt, go make sure the sitting room is comfortable." Her servants frown disapprovingly, and the mage - Sella - glares at you before sweeping off to prepare something to drink. Berserker disappears in much the same way Archer did, and Illyasviel sighs happily before smiling at you. "I am Illyasviel von Einzbern," she says with a curtsy. You respond in kind and she skips up toward you, staring into your eyes. You realize that she is actually tired, but she's hiding it well - almost as well as you're hiding your own tiredness. "Flandre Scarlet, was it? Are you from England?" You sniff disdainfully and shake your head.

"I most certainly am not. I am Hessian." Her eyes narrow as she frowns and tilts her head.

"Hessian … then you're with the Prague Association? Or another part of the Sea?" You grin and she starts to giggle, then tugs at you to follow her up the stairs. "So, what did you want to talk about?"

What do you do?

[ ] Ask about the Grail War.

DM Note: I … I got nothin. For some reason, I'm blanking on questions or topics of conversation to discuss with Ilya.

[q] Call this first meeting of the Murder Loli Association to order.

I'm tempted to make that a serious vote.

[X] Remember your manners and thank Ilya for her hospitality. Then ask Ilya about herself. You find her more interesting and less creepy than some of the other contestants. It's like looking at a younger version of yourself. Make sure to ask why she's participating in the war.

I'll go with this until someone comes up with something better.

We already know about the Grail War from several sources, but there's no way to avoid it coming up in dialogue.

I have serious doubts about Shirou's life expectancy now.
I've been awaiting this unholy union since we entered the Fate world. Shirou's heroic sacrifice will be is appreciated. Honestly, I doubt he'll die, but I have no idea what kind of shape he'll be in. Maybe a doll on Ilya's shelf?
It probably depends on whether Flandre gets too 'enthusiastic' or not, since keeping Shirou alive (and torturing him) was Illya's canon plan.

Well, as we've seen in this story, Flandre is a master at making people apologize and in Shirou's case the limbs will just grow back, so he should be fine.

Okay, time to write thoughts!
more interesting and less creepy
Flandre doesn't really find any of the Masters she's met to be 'creepy.' Zouken is odd for a few reasons, but not creepy (and not a Master), and of the others, only Souichirou really comes off as odd. Emiya is boring, Shinji is  and stupid, Tohsaka ought to know better, and Caster is mysterious.

It's like looking at a younger version of yourself
I'm seeing less of this, because Flan's been in reasonable contact with Ilya for ... all of a minute or so? There are some similarities in their personalities, but I'm not sure that Flan would come to this conclusion even after a longer period - their situations are too dissimilar.

Now, I said not to worry - that means you don't have to change the vote. You can if you want to, but what's written is fine to use. If you want to clarify on either of the two points, you're free to do so, although you still don't need to put it in a new vote; simply explaining your point of view will be sufficient.

(Also, I'm half-asleep :) )

I'm tempted to make that a serious vote.
 Yeah, maybe as an Omake. Unfortunately, this is the wrong kind of Quest for it to be serious.

Talking to Illyasviel

You follow her up the steps, then wait at the top of the stairs. She turns around when she realizes you stopped, and you curtsy once more. "To think I'd almost forgotten … thank you, Illyasviel von Einzbern, for the kind hospitality you have shown me. Your nobility is an example to all who should aspire to greatness." She stares at you blankly for a moment, then looks down, blushing faintly, as if unsure how to respond. There is some flattery in your remark, but you did bully your way into her home, disrupting her sleep, and she is still treating you like an invited guest. To not thank her would be a shame upon your name.

"Um, I'm just doing the right thing! And I don't get many guests or meet new people." Recovering quickly, she turns back and guides you to the sitting room where Leysritt is finishing the fire. Illyasviel leads you to a small table with two comfortable chairs; the table has a chessboard etched into it in obsidian and ivory. The pieces are probably in a drawer in the table. Illyasviel watches you, mostly innocently, but a few times you feel something in her stare, as if she's testing or probing you.

"I had come here mostly to engage with Heracles without distraction," you say, and Illyasviel nods. "It was quite enjoyable, and I think I might like another combat some other time, if you have no obligations more pressing at that time."

"You should have recovered more," she says with a smile as her other servant brings in a tea set. "You didn't seem as powerful as the first time. I remember thinking that you might be able to kill Berserker, but you couldn't." You take a drink of your tea and nod in approval. It's certainly satisfactory.

"Mm, perhaps I should have. Certainly, I was not at my best earlier … still, I had no wish to eliminate your Servant. I am not a participant in the Grail War, so it would be unseemly for me to kill a Servant without a better cause than my own selfish desire." She stares at you again, surprise evident on her face, then begins laughing. Her servants don't find it funny, however, and both continue glowering at you from behind their young mistress, and you wait for her to calm down before continuing. "However, you seem to be the most interesting of the Masters I have encountered; the Master of Rider is a delusional fool, the Master of Archer an arrogant brat, and the Master of Saber a bore." Illyasviel grins at you mischievously.

"Oh? It seems like you're spying on lots of Masters," she says, and you pout hurtfully, earning a giggle. She leans back, looking at the ceiling, then forward, still grinning. "Hm, about me? I'm the greatest Master of the Einzberns, and the greatest achievement of the Einzberns. I'm the owner of the Holy Grail, and all the other Masters are just bugs before Berserker. Is that what you wanted?" You frown and tilt your head.

"The Holy Grail belongs to the Einzberns?"

"Lady Illyasviel …."

"Hmm … you think I'm interesting, and that makes me happy. I think you're interesting, too, and it's no fun if I'm the only one explaining things, isn't it? Why don't you tell me about yourself?" You take a drink of your tea as you consider what to say, and so does Illyasviel as she waits for you to speak.

"Hm. I'm from Germany, but my family moved to a hidden place in Japan a long time ago. I have an older sister, and she's the most important person to me. I'm no good at magic. I don't have many friends, but I think it's good to have friends, so I want to get more." You lean forward with a light grin, close enough for Illyasviel to reach your face, and she nods.

"Hmm … I like snow but not the cold. I like it warm. And I like to play, but I'm not supposed to." She pouts and you catch Sella shifting uncomfortably.

"I don't like the rain or falling spears. I'm fine with the cold. Playing's fun, but my sister doesn't play with me much anymore. She's too busy." You look blankly at your empty teacup and shake your head slowly.

"You don't like talking?" You glance at Illyasviel and smile.

"It's a meaningless talk, isn't it? We're both being truthful, but a handful of words isn't really going to get us anywhere. We're just two people whose paths have crossed for the moment, and we don't even know if we'll meet after tonight." She snorts, unladylike.

"Berserker won't lose. Do you think you'll lose against someone besides him?" You raise an eyebrow and shake your head.

"Of course not - I don't think he will beat me. But you remember your history, don't you? Love is what killed Heracles the first time. Do you think he will long survive your death?" She stares blankly at you for a moment, then smiles wistfully and looks at the fire.

"The other Masters can't kill me. It would waste everything if they killed me, and they want to win even though they can't, so they won't kill me. I'm too valuable. So they can't beat Berserker through me, either." You wonder if that's related to her claim of ownership of the Grail. She yawns, unable to fight it off, and Sella steps forward to put a hand on her shoulder. She brushes the servant away and looks at you.

"I have been keeping you up, haven't I? Might I have one more question, if it's not too much to answer?" She nods and sips her tea again. "Why are you participating in the Grail War?" Her servants stiffen, but she smiles.

"Because it's mine. Because the other Masters don't deserve it. Because we were betrayed in the last war. Because it's what I exist for." You frown at your tea before finishing it off. "… Do you want to stay here for a while longer? We have several rooms that Leysritt and Sella can get ready quickly." You stare at her, almost as shocked as her servants.

"Ilya!"
"Lady Illyavsviel!"

"I'm sure it will be more comfortable here than wherever you're staying at Ryuudou Temple," she says, ignoring her maids as they fall into an even more shocked silence. You almost wonder at how she knew - or guessed, at least - but even if she didn't know beforehand, you are still wearing Caster's bead in your ribbon. It's rather shocking that it survived, actually … you should have put it away before you fought Heracles. She yawns again. "Um. Sorry. I won't be mad if you decide to go back." That doesn't really help you, though. If anything, it seems to make the decision more difficult ….

What do you do?

[ ] Accept the invitation.
- [ ] Continue talking with Illyasviel in the evening.
- - What about? Anything to avoid?
- [ ] Thank her again for her hospitality and leave in the evening.
- - [ ] Explore the city.
- - [ ] Infiltrate Tohsaka's home.
- - [ ] Head back to the temple to talk with Caster and Deis.
- - - Anything to leave out or focus on?

[ ] Decline the invitation and return to the temple.
- [ ] You made a deal with Caster when she allowed you to stay at the temple, and you're perilously close to a conflict of interests already.
- [ ] Your friend is still at the temple, and while you don't think Caster will do anything to her, she's probably worried about you.
- When you talk with Caster and Deis, is there anything you want to leave our or focus on?

[ ] Other?

Very very tempted to accept. Illya would be a great friend for Flan.
The only thing is letting Deis know where we are, so we don't worry.

@Entropy Judge do we have a phone number for the temple, or any way to contact Deis or something?

Honestly, this would be a short friendship anyway. Illiya doesn't have long to live at all and when she dies... -shivers-

-edit-

I also hope for your sakes that this isn't the heaven's feel route. Dark Sakura is not a fun opponent.

I think it'd be better to just say that we have prior obligations, rather than that we're somewhat associated with another Master.

Not super familiar with Fate, mind filling me in?

Not super familiar with Fate, mind filling me in?

Illiya due to experiments done on her to make her the holy grail/biggest mana battery a servant could have only has one more year to live even if she survives the war. But then, her body will likely break down into the lesser grail when most of the servants are dead, like her mother did, which makes me honestly question her grandfathers sanity but then again that dude is rather insane. Anyway, so in the fate route Illiya gets to live a year afterwards. In the UBW route, she gets her heart ripped out by gill for shits and giggles. IN heaven's feel, she sacrifices herself for Shirou so he could live.

If you are wondering about dark Sakura, well. She is basically a font of infinite mana that is really hard to kill and could be comparable to a new born god. At least, from what I remember. Flan would have to eye her in order to kill her if she goes that far.

But basically, the more servants die the more Illiya's lifespan grows shorter. The more servants Sakura consumes? Well... the more fucked everyone but Flan is.

-edit-

Honestly, you guys probably should kill Saber while she's still weak with an incompetent master, but then. That would be abusing meta knowledge and making Flan get involved in the war which she isn't currently.

Well, to be fair, we're probably not going to be in this city for a year, so if she doesn't die in the War, the reduced lifespan will hardly matter.

Hm... Can Flan turn people into Vampires? That might prolong Illya's life.
