Okay, that cupcake thing sounds like it's more likely to upset Caster's stomach than win friends.

Ehh....fine, I'll switch to keep things tied up, but I do hope we do that portrait later on. It's a good gesture, hopefully one that won't be mistaken.

Hmmm.. Did Rin ask Flandre not to kill people in town or not? I thought she might have but I don't see that line, looking back. If she had, I'd assume Flandre had killed someone when asking for directions just to spite her, but it looks like it was just pointless.

I wouldn't say pointless:
You maintain your invisibility as you interrogate the officers that survive your entrance, then kill them messily after they've served their purpose. Feeling a little better, ...

You watch Rin for a little bit while you make up your mind. You could follow her, but you'd rather not risk getting caught - your invisibility is excellent, but you're not a ghost, so physical barriers and traps might still affect you. Besides, while Archer may be an excellent fighter, right now he's Caster's business, not yours. There are a couple more libraries you could check, but before that you decide to go through the encyclopedia so your memory is refreshed. You might even find some clues on who the other Servants could be …. Then Rin walks forward and jumps off the building. You give her a few minutes to get away, in case she forgot something, and to hopefully let Archer move as well, and drop your invisibility and take out the encyclopedia.

You flip ahead to Heracles, but it even says that more details are found in other sections. You shiver; you used to think a comparison to Heracles was a compliment until Patchouli showed you more of the real stories. A madman and kinslayer is not someone you would like being compared to, and you wonder about his Master. Foolish, powerful, or ignorant? Or some combination of the three …. Shaking your head to clear it, you start at the beginning and focus on finding more about Heracles's exploits and any human sorceresses - there are far too many nymphs and the like for you to consider … but you wish you knew more about Caster, because that she might be Greek and have known Heracles isn't a terribly solid basis for figuring out who she was.

In addition to his twelve labors, Heracles defeated death itself, returning Queen Alcestis to the land of the living after she died in place of her husband. He threatened the chariot of the sun, and fought Apollo, Ares, and Poseidon at different times. He outwrestled Antaeus, the giant who gained strength from touching the earth. He held the weight of the world once, but was canny enough to trick the titan back into carrying it. Too many individual myths, and not as much space devoted to them in this book, you decide, but you note that he isn't always victorious through brute strength alone - he always reinforces it with cunningness and wits. So even if he's in the grip of madness, you shouldn't underestimate his ability to improvise. Perhaps Caster could be Cassandra? A princess who could see the future perfectly, but was never believed. Circe certainly was a sorceress, and a rather nice one; she would definitely be able to help Deis, if you can stay on her good side. Medea, the kinslaying princess-sorceress and alchemist, used by the gods and possibly more than a little mad herself. You sigh as you reach the end of the book; there were a lot of important women, even excluding the goddesses, but few would count as sorceresses in their own right. Without knowing more about Caster, you won't be sure which of your options is correct. You put the book away and study the city layout, then launch yourself to the east, toward the farther of the two remaining libraries. As you fly above the city, it occurs to you that you're operating on not one, but two assumptions: that Berserker is Heracles, and that Caster is Greek. After all, it's not like magicians can't be wrong, and this is Japan - if there's a magic war going on with seven Heroes being summoned, why would two of them come from Greece? Heracles you could understand, but why would someone purposely summon Medea? Unless there's some aspect of the system you haven't learned, of course, in which case all this running about might be pointless ….

You hover above the streetlights and look around for the library, then turn invisible and float toward an upper window. Someone left it open, and while you can't quite fit through, something like a bat would have no trouble. Once inside you land on a shelf and look around, trying to figure out their filing system; you frown when you realize it's set up the same way as the other library, then shrug - it makes things easier. You find the section on religion and pull out several books of legends and stories; one has a collection of stories from around the world, one has medieval stores, and the third has legends of 'all nations.' Who knows? Maybe they're only good for a laugh, maybe Patchouli actually doesn't have them yet; they might not be particularly useful to her, but she treasures books of all kinds. Two books of Japanese stories, to round out the collection, and then you pause to look over the shelves again. You aren't being subtle about your selection, but your options are fairly limited anyway, and they probably won't realize the books are missing for a while. You might even return them! … Before you die, anyway. You slip out and head for the third library, which turns out to be the most interesting of the three. Maybe not particularly useful, but none of the books are in Japanese - you see German books, Italian books, several languages you don't recognize and a few you can't read. Apart from a couple German books and one in French, however, you don't find any on legends … and those three are translations of two of the books you already have! You pocket them anyway, in case the text has some differences or you just feel like reading in a more familiar language. Still, you probably have a day's reading with you now, so it's time to see the shops, and you fly to the merchant area, grateful for the lack of people in the street. You stroll along the sidewalk at first, studying the stores through the windows - here what looks like a well-to-do cake shop, there a nice clothing store, another bakery ….

One store has what you're looking for, and while the windows don't open and the door is firmly locked, it's a simple matter to smash through one of the windows and enter. An alarm goes off, but you're invisible! You drift past artwork and head for the actual painting supplies. You have sketching supplies and pencils, but you don't have watercolors or brushes, and if you're going to make anything more than a memento for her, you're going to need those. You rub your hands together gleefully as you examine their paper stocks. They also have oil paints, but they aren't as much fun as watercolor. You stockpile yourself greedily - some of what they have is almost as good as what you have at the mansion … although you wish you knew for sure that the colors you're getting are good ones. The names are all wrong. Finally satisfied, you leave the store just before the police arrive, and spend a few minutes watching them try to piece together what happened before continuing on in search of a better food shop. You'll need eggs, cheeses, at least two kinds of meat … and maybe a frying pan. You don't actually know what they have at the temple, and it would be silly to have the food but be unable to properly make it. Fortunately, you find a grocery store just a few streets away. You break in - without setting off any alarms this time - and drift along the aisles. You consider getting supplies for something more complicated, but you don't need to apologize that much. Probably, anyway. You're doing this of your own initiative, so Caster is going to like what you make for her! You giggle to yourself, then sigh unhappily. You're going to have to make it up to Deis, though - she can't eat anything. Maybe Caster will be able to help her? Or at least might be able to help with finding a body she can use, so you can bring it to Deis? Then Deis will be able to have her own body!

Preparations complete, you start to return to the temple, but something on the bridge attracts your attention: a young man draped over the railing. Humans do odd things, but that's odd even for a human, so you descend to see what happened. He isn't dead, not quite, but he's close - nearly bloodless, in fact. Well, you'll have to introduce yourself at some point …. You look up at the sky; you still have several hours before dawn.

My reasoning is that we should first focus on doing our little apology gift, and do it as a little surprise. After that, we can ask about making her portrait as the second part of the present, since that is a little more personal.

The name is asking too much. She needs to trust us first, and I don't think these gifts will be enough. Even then, I wouldn't ask for it, because it is probably safer for her. Will the name-revealing portrait be destroyed afterward? Where would it be kept if not? And what are the odds that Flandre would be compelled to reveal Caster's name, or if she turns against Caster? These are things that Medea would worry about, if she is being pragmatic.

Good point. I'm going to change my vote accordingly.

Hmm, nearly bloodless?

I am hoping that's one of Rider's victims, because the alternative is that there's another vampire or similar hanging around Fuyuki. If we're lucky, it's a person Caster has tasted out her new blood spell on.

Worst case this person is A. competition, B. someone Flan might blame her bodies on, or C. someone who might blame their bodies on Flan.

Also, Shinji is more than enough of a scumbag to do this to get Shirou and Rin after Flan, and Rider is easily ruthless enough to go along with it.

Not sure what to do yet, but I'm actually concerned about this body and am considering bringing it back to the shrine. If it's mostly bloodless...well first I'd rather like to know how they're alive at all, but knowing who killed them is rather important and I am inclined to investigate.

The way the bloodless corpse segues immediately into "You'll have to introduce yourself" makes me think Flan at least believes it's another vampire.
