Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

[X] Goldfish

We're rich! And now naturally we need to spend most of it! lol

But yeah, need to be prepared for super alien land for us.

What affordable low-level magic items can we expect to find in this place, if any?

Scrolls are single-use items in Pathfinder, right? Generally, I find that a reusable item tends to pay for itself much better in the long run. I'd rather get one of those. A minor buff once a day may keep you out of situations where you need to press the big red emergency button.

And the best part about it is that minor buffs stack.

We aren't likely to find much like that in Cauldron. This place is solidly our "starting zone". We've been on the lookout, though.

The main reason to look for scrolls is to add them to Mina's repertoire. Being able to prepare them for later use is the goal. 1st level scrolls only cost 25 gold, so we could easily pick up a few of them without much cost. 2nd level are 150 gold, which is a lot, but it could be worth it if we find a good one. Right now Mina only knows two 2nd level spells.

Scrolls aren't quite as useful for Kori, but it could still be helpful to have a few for emergencies. We don't have many spell slots at the moment, so the value of being able to cast an extra CLW or PfE spell at the right time can't be ignored.

Not arguing here, magic is our force multiplier. Definitely want a couple of 2nd level spells (not just scrolls, but actual spells for our party members to cast; they fall under the definition of reusable assets). Just want to know what options are there.

How do you even go about this on a forum? Ask the GM to come up with shop selections? Browse some rulebook or other for examples of low-tier treasure?

I'm assuming DP used something like the DM's guide tables to help determine available magic item type and value based on settlement size, then populated the list with appropriate items.

  • [X] Yes
-[X] Look for travel supplies needed in the Burnlands, as recommended by Gorok and Mina (tents, a map of the region above, rations, climate appropriate clothing, etc), and if there is anything that might help protect Kori's eyes from bright light (dark goggles, for example, but even something like a parasol or umbrella could work in a pinch)
-[X] Magic scrolls; primarily for Mina, but any low level Divine spell scrolls Kori could use would be worth taking a look at.
-[X] A weapon vendor where we might be able to find Cob a better dagger, and possibly for Gorok to part with some of his weapon collection or find something that suits him better now that we can afford higher quality merchandise.

To be honest, I almost do want to buy a farm.

Or maybe a herd of cattle?

Taking up the nomadic mercantile life… that sounds nice. I have no strong feelings about medieval merchants, but surely it's better than waging killing for coin….

Arc 3 Post 6: Of Glass and Coal
Of Glass and Coal

Season of Rushing Waters

Mina listens quietly as Gorok recounts what the lands of his tribe are like, sodden and savage is what you manage to pick out among the unfamiliar words.

"We should probably get muck walking boots and waxed cloaks to shed the rain..."

Tidehawk flies the rains are near/ Tidehawk swoops the storm is here. The verse impinges upon your consciousness without context save for the smell of brine so very different from the reek of the city. Images seen in dreams, flashes of color half understood.

Above all else you walk among tables of stone and fungus wood looking for something to guard your eyes from the fire above, but glass is a rare and precious thing here, loved for its beauty and its colors, not for any practical use. 'After all, why would anyone want to linger in the Burnlands with the hateful sun? Even the most daring of raiders know not to linger there,' a pale gilled fellow offering free shrimp samples from a bowl by his elbow with every purchase informs you.

Supplies: 1d100 = 33 (Basics only)

While none of the cloaks are good enough by Gorok's judgement he finally settles on heavy full body coverings, 'ponchos' Mina calls them and she assures you that all of you will be glad of the scratchy material when the first of Gozreh's storms are upon you. Attempts to find something to cover you all even more while you sleep, a fabric roof on poles called a 'tent', prove fruitless. All the merchants summoned by the sound of easy coin have as little of an idea of what that is as you do... not that it stops some of them from trying to pretend otherwise.

Gained 4 Ponchos
Lost 20 sp

As you contemplate sticking one of the things over your head so you can shade your eyes Mina notices your plight. "Maybe you could draw coal dust circles around the eyes. I heard they do that in Osirion to guard from the glare. Well, what I really heard was that the noble ladies in Caliphas were doing that takinng after the Osiriani, but just to look more striking. The mendicant friar who brought the news didn't seem very impressed, but it's not like he had been to Osirion or Caliphas I'll bet."

By the time she is done experimenting you catch a glimpse of a face made strange in the polished blade of Cob's new trick blade that can be flipped closed into the shape of an innocuous flute. A bit too fancy for a goblin some might say, but it's not as though Cob's kin aren't as well known as any others from claiming prizes from the living and the dead alight.

Cob gains a Masterwork Switchblade
Lost 305 gp

"There are many merchants, not as much customers as they had expected," Gorok muses as he looks over at a one horned kobold less ostentatiously garbed than your friend the dragon bothered but with a far less consistent collection of arms at her feet. "With the raids over here is less need to them. We have our pick..."

"You have your pick," you counter, motioning to the gloom blade, still an unaccustomed weight at your side, one you have bumped against the side of tables and the edge of doors more than you would like to recall.

Weapons: 1d100 = 93 (A wide selection)

What, if anything does Gorok Set Aside?

[] Write in

If the Earth-shaker is selected it will remain with him, just not as a weapon

What masterwork does he buy?

[] Machete

[] Dwarven Maul Axe

[] Scythe

[] Greataxe

[] Throwing Axe

OOC: For anyone wondering, yes, Kori does look like a racoon at the moment since he just had coal dust applied around his eyes by someone who had heard of something like that fourth or fifth hand.

Haha, he might end up being an accidental trend setter.

Would be funny to come back to Cauldron after a few months adventuring on the surface to find that much of the populace has taken up the practice.

The idea of Cob with a switchblade just seems to work, you know? I can so easily picture him walking around, flicking it out just for fun, like a boy with a new toy.

It doesn't hurt that it's a nice upgrade, either. At our level, the +1 attack bonus Cob and Gorok will get from using Masterwork weapons is quite nice.

[X] Upgrades
-[X] Gorok will sell his Ogre Hook and set aside his Bone Earth-Shaker. The former because he has found a better weapon and the latter because it's sentimental value is greater than it's usefulness as a weapon. He'll keep his Masterwork Rapier as a backup weapon.
--[X] Purchase the Masterwork Greataxe.
--[X] Purchase a couple regular machetes if they're available.
-[X] Also, in lieu of tents, Mina might suggest purchasing a couple of heavy oiled or waxed canvas (or the Darklands equivalent) tarps. They might not be as comfortable as a tent, but with a bit of rope or twine and some sticks they can at least be setup to keep the rain off of us.

Trash panda warrior!

Hmmm, does the marginal gain of +1 to survival justify a masterwork machete?
Not really, IMO. A Masterwork weapon is expensive, and Gorok already has a decent Survival bonus.

The Greataxe is a much better option. It does much more damage, and it's two-handed so it can be used in conjunction with Gorok's Shield of Swings feat.

Allright. As much as I'd love a scythe for the aesthetics, a greataxe is an exellent weapon.

Couldn't we just ask for four bog standard machetes?

My family doesn't own a masterwork shovel, but we seem to do well enough.

And after this, onwards to the surface!

I would love to see what DP writes about Kori witnessing the surface for the first time.
