Knowledge is power. Like any rational person I at least want to know where all the Servants are, if not who they are, before going off to attack one. Because I'd prefer to not be blindsided by the rapidly escalating fight as more Servants inevitably show up.
Besides, Illya managed to summon Saber without using a physical catalyst. Whose to say that someone else couldn't do the same?

I will give a cookie to anyone who works out who Shirou is going to summon and why.
Well... he pretty much has two catalysts on him at all times so he's likely to have one of those used before anything else. The first is Avalon, meaning he can probably summon anyone who's handled it as part of their legend. The second would be himself to summon GARcher.
Most likely the Avalon one, but not sure who specifically.

Is Avalon still the catalyst of his summoning ? I could see him summoning one of Arthur's sons in Welsh/Modern mythology, considering he's himself the son of a "hero" who used Avalon.
