Illya had opened her mouth to speak, but…
"Illya. The Overseer first."
My voice cut through the air rather pointedly. Illya looked a bit like a fish for a long moment, struggling to find the words, before letting out a small sigh.
"We have to take them too, don't we?"
"That is up to you."
Shirou and Rider looked between us, but Illya just shook her head.
"That's not a choice at all, Saber." She muttered darkly. "Very well. First, the Overseer. Let's satisfy these farcical requirements of the church before we move on with the day."
"Farcical?" Shirou spoke up. "I don't understand." I didn't immediately answer, taking a moment to eat some of the rice that had been placed before me.
It was… a little dry. Yet the meal when taken together was delicious, an explosion of flavours I could scarcely believe. So very delicious.
Shirou was a talented cook if nothing else.
"The Holy Church has been adjudicating the Holy Grail War since the third war." I explained gently. "It is a… requirement, it seems, with this war that each Master present themselves to the Overseer for some sort of registration."
"Then it wasn't the case before?" Rider asked. I shook my head.
"No. In fact, I don't believe I ever met the Overseer in the last Holy Grail War." I admitted. "His contact with us was through the familiars used by our Masters. All I know is that the Church is off limits, for all intents and purposes."
"Hmph." Illya just snorted at my words. "A farce. The Holy Church has no real right to intervene."
"They do possess a Command Spell." I noted. Illya shrugged.
"It doesn't work on Servants that currently hold a contract." She noted dully. "For all intents and purposes, the Holy Church is a toothless tiger. Their Overseer relies heavily on misdirection to function at all. In practice, he has no power at all." She paused for a long moment. "Unless he were to obtain a Servant. Given it's the Church, I wouldn't be surprised if he were to subvert the rules in such a fashion. They did so in the last war."
That was information to me.
"How?"
"The Master of Berserker was receiving aid from the Church. It's how Mama was kidnapped, according to the Old Man. He wasn't very impressed."
Suddenly, the reason behind the number of Command Spells on Illya's body made a little more sense. They weren't just for the sake of winning the Holy Grail War against the other Master's, but as insurance in case the Holy Church itself tried to influence the result of the war. No matter how many Command Spells the Holy Church had saved up, I knew for sure by simple counting that it was less then 30. In fact, I doubted it was more then 20, as most of the Command Spells in the third war had been used up, including mine.
Lancer and Rider both fell due to having no Contract in that war. It was brutal, after all, a war with eight Servants where only seven should have been summoned.
"Then the Overseer isn't really able to do… what?" Shirou asked, curious. Illya hummed.
"In theory, he's supposed to make sure the word on magic and the Holy Grail War doesn't reach the ears of the populace, as well as ensure the rules of the Holy Grail War are followed." She noted. "In practice, all he can really do is cover everything up. He's toothless."
"Then the people in Fuyuki aren't safe?"
"Not at all." I spoke up that time, my lips twisting sadly. "Several battles in the previous wars had unacceptable death tolls on the populace. It's a bit of a disgrace upon my name as hero that I've actually missed with my Noble Phantasm more than once..."
Rider winced at the very idea.
"Yeah… I know that feeling." His face was twisted into a pained grimace. I nodded to him.
The conversation died rather quickly at that point. We descended into our own thoughts.
-
Rider had us at the Church in surprising time. I almost smiled at the goofy little grin on his face as he offered me his hand to step off. He was…
I don't know. He feels similar to her. It briefly occurred to me that Rider might not actually be as old as I thought.
I shook the thought out of my head. No, that was impossible. The life of the Hound of Ulster was quite well recorded, and it covered quite some years. Still, I could see the very small similarities.
"Thank you, Rider." I stated. I gave him a small smile back, before turning my attention to the courtyard of the church. I heard Illya say likewise. Shirou hopped off on his own. I was only slightly surprised, yet Shirou stood next to his servant without much in the way of hesitation.
It was odd. The two looked rather different, but their stance felt similar.
"Nervous?"
Rider's voice was almost teasing. Shirou twitched.
"Yeah. I feel off."
I took two steps forward, passing Shirou and levelling my gaze at Rider.
"Do you feel it?"
"Yeah. I don't think we're the only visitors."
Rider's response was level, looking almost unconcerned at the fact. Illya began striding forward, ignoring the angelic scene before her. Her face was scrunched up, in fact, as if it made her sick.
"Saber. Come on." She called. I blinked in surprise. What?
"Is the Church no neutral ground? Servants are-"
"If that is Archer, then I want you next to me." Illya retorted. I stared for only a moment, before nodding, hurriedly falling into step behind her.
She had an excellent point, after all. If that was Archer, then if I remained at the border of the property, that was it. Illya would be killed long before I could intercept any attack.
Shirou began walking shortly after, Rider by his side. Soon we were at the doors of the church.
"Ready, Illya?"
Illya's face was still scrunched up. She let out a long sigh.
"Let's get this over with. I just want the world to be sane again. The sooner with have it back, the sooner I can go back to killing him." She muttered darkly. I could only roll my eyes at that.
She was certainly trying to convince someone she hated Shirou. Whether it was me or her, I don't know. I couldn't discern her true feelings on the matter at all. I knew better then to merely trust my gut.
Not on a matter like this. Trusting my gut on peoples feelings led to the hills of Camlann. I don't want to repeat that mistake.
But how do I not repeat that mistake?
*Creak*
The door groaned and screeched as Illya pushed it open and walked in. I let out a small sigh, following her in.
As far as chapels go, the interior of the church was not particularly extravagant, but at the same time, it was tidy and well kept. There were two already present, a girl in a red jacket, her hair black and tied in two tails, and a man, his face gaunt and his garb the tidy dress of a…
My hand clenches.
Master of Assassin.
Kotomine Kirei.
I knew this man.
Illya and Rider both stiffen. I'm almost certain they both realised my feelings. I try to reign my thoughts in. No, for now, I could do nothing.
"Huh?"
"Normally, Servants are prohibited from entering the church. You are aware of this, Master of Saber." The voice of the man rung out, eerily calm. "I will overlook it this once. Saber, Rider, remain at the door, if you would. Do not give Archer reason to be twi-" He suddenly trailed off, looking almost exasperated as another form wisped into existence, a woman who came to rest in front of the girl in the red jacket. "Never mind. Archer, lower your bow."
The green haired archer twitched, her ears and her tail continuing to quiver. She was dressed in a green dress, but her body was also covered in black armour that gave away her profession.
Her black bow slowly lowered.
"Very well." Archer's voice finally piped up. "Master, stay with me. We may yet have to pass from this place."
I could feel Rider tensed beside me. His face was twisted into something else.
Excitement.
"I'm sure you got the memo about no Servants, Einzbern." The red jacketed girl spoke up bluntly. Shirou was starring, looking almost dumbfounded.
"Tohsaka?" He finally spoke up. Tohsaka's gaze fell on him.
"Emiya. So it would seem you hold some minute talent." She seemed rather unimpressed. Or perhaps, it was more akin to dismissive. She sniffed, her hands in her pockets.
"Now, now. Let's all relax. There is no need for you to stain the house of god." The priest noted. "Emiya. Emiya Shirou, I presume? Yes, that is correct."
"How do yo-"
"Know your name? You are the adopted child of Emiya Kiritsugu. Given the man's history, it would be remiss of me not to at least keep tabs." He quipped, sounding almost bored of the line of thought. "Ah, but I am not performing my duties. I am Kotomine Kirei. I am the Overseer of this Holy Grail War."
His gaze went from me, to Rider, to Archer.
"It seems we have a situation." He noted. "For the sake of everyone involved, I must request that you, Master of Saber and Master of Rider, leave first."
The priest was slowly walking down the aisle, his face looking almost bored.
"We understand. I wouldn't want to impede your time anyway." Illya sniffed. She looked annoyed. I couldn't exactly blame her.
Archer was right there. I was in optimum range to attack her, and her ability to fight back would be limited unless she was talented at fighting in melee with a bow, though Tristan, I doubted she was.
And I could do nothing. Not without knowing what Rider would do, at least. I have seen enough of Shirou, I think, to know that he won't allow a battle here, though.
I shook my head.
How frustrating.
"Then our registration is done?" Shirou asked. Kirei gave him a long look.
"Yes." He answered at last. "It appears you and the Master of Saber are on good enough terms that you are aware of what you have gotten yourself involved in." He hummed, as if a thought had only just occurred to him. "Or, at least, I would hope so. You are aware of the Holy Grail War, are you, Emiya?"
"Yes." Shirou answered. "Seven Servants fight to the death over the Holy Grail." Kirei nodded.
"That would be the war in its simplest terms, yes." He noted. "You are confident in your answer. I don't believe I have any further information to give you." He paused. "Unless you… have questions?"
…
Oh, I had many questions.
Chief among them…
