Saber's pretty done with this whole carry on, so there's no time to delay.

I'm tired.
My wrist hurts.
This Berserker's too loud.
I want to be back in Camelot bleeding out.

Quick question folds, does this line mean we leave with Illya? I took it to mean going alone.

This is cool! Also can I ask what your avatar is from?

The line is just generic complaints reworded from parties to the Grail War, and the avatar is a fan design of the hypothetical Blue Diamond from Steven Universe.

(It says something about a fandom when there's art of a character who's only even implied to exist.)

Still entertaining XD

That said fandom is kind of awesome? ;) I thought the design looked reminiscent of something I'd seen in SU, thanks for clarifying.

[X] Talk to Illya further.
-[X] Ask about Ilya's reasons for summoning you.

And also :
-[X] Ask how the Einzbern had been able to summon her twice. Did they use a catalyst?

It might be interesting to start some foreshadowing for Shirou and Avalon.

[X] Yes.

Silly vote is silly.

[X] Leave the Mansion and enter Fuyuki. There's no reason to delay. Let the war begin in earnest.

At the very least we can get some scouting done to see how Fuyuki has changed since the last Grail War. (Admittedly we could just look at a map. But nothing like personal experience)

3. The Reason
"Yes, I will."

My answer comes as swiftly as the question did. What kind of question was that, anyway? Of course I would watch over Illya, awake or asleep. Sella stared at me, more akin to a glare then anything else.

I meet it stoically. It's almost like a contest of wills, yet…

"Very well." Sella finally answers, resuming her dinner. "I will show you to her room soon."

"If you do not trust me, I cannot do my job as Servant." I state bluntly. Sella's gaze rises once more.

"I believe you will fail regardless." She answered coldly. I fall silent, watching her eat. I wanted to scream at her, tell her that of course I wouldn't fail, yet…

Four failures had told me that promising that in the war for the Holy Grail was completely impossible. Illya may well die to Assassin before anything could rightly be done about it.

Finally Sella finishes, standing roughly and walking out from her spot, sweeping her hand to the side.

"Come."

A simple command. I followed.

This was much closer to what I was used to. Servant's were not uncommonly treated as tools by their Master's. It was a critical error to make, as the Master's of the past had repeatedly learned far too late. I've seen Master's fall to angry Servants almost as often as I've successfully defeated other Servants in battle myself.

I've been the angry Servant cutting down her Master.

That is not a hat I wish to wear a second time. I do not intend to do so again unless it cannot be helped. I will not allow it to be necessary.

Sella led me through the halls silently, until we reached the master bedroom. I remember this room. Kiritsugu and Irisviel slept here on the two nights in Fuyuki that they spent in each others presence. Those two nights had been most precious moments that were lost too soon.

Illya slept alone in the bed. Leysritt was naught but a silent sentinel in a nearby chair.

I crumble against the wall, merely sitting there. It is comfortable enough.

"You do not demand a bed?"

"I do not need a bed."

My answer to Sella is as chilling as her quip at me. She does not speak, so I continue.

"I am a Servant. I don't need sleep. The weather does not bother me." I continued without hesitation, staring at the sleeping girl in my care. "Therefore, I will guard her until she wakes again."

Maybe, just maybe, if I was in a worse position, with minimal mana and no way to generate more, I would seriously consider sleeping. However, in my current state, it is completely unnecessary.

"A perfect assassin." Sella sniffs. "All it would take is one-"

"And if I were so inclined, who would stop me? You?" I ask the question earnestly. "There is no force within this mansion you could leverage on me in time to save her, you do realise that, right? I am a Servant. So are those who wish to kill her. Who better to stand watch against a Servant, then another Servant?"

Sella had no answer, merely bowing with a small huff.

"I will tend to the house, good night."

That seemed to be as close to an admission of defeat as I'd get. I return my gaze to Illya.

She is very peaceful, sleeping like that. I settle down, and wait.

"Leysritt, right?"

I try to get the attention of the other maid, but she bears me no mind. It's… odd, I don't think she is intentionally ignoring me, yet nothing I do gets more then a blink. Perhaps…

A programmed function, I guess…

I decide to leave well enough alone.

-

The sun has been up for some three hours before Illya finally stirs. Leysritt has already left the room, and Sella never returned. I am uncertain if I should be bothered of not.

Was that a measure of trust or an admission of complete defeat from Sella? I don't know. Yet Illya rose from her spot, rubbing the sleep from her eyes and staring at me unblinkingly.

"Saber."

"Yes Master?"

"Did you sleep?"

I am a little surprised her first question was about a bodily function I no longer had use for.

"I didn't need to."

"I see."

Illya is subdued, hoping from the bed and making her way to the vanity.

"Please tell Leysritt I would like eggs this morning." She finally stated, walking towards a door that at first I'd thought, and remembered, to be a wardrobe. It was not. It was another room. Some sort of bath.

I nod, and walk from the room. Was Illya not a morning person? Or was something wrong?

Regardless, I make my way back down to the main hall. I could smell breakfast cooking already. All I had to do is follow my nose.

Leysritt is already at work in the kitchen.

"Illya wan-"

"Eggs."

Huh? I blink, as Leysritt looks up from her pan, some eggs already in it.

"Yeah. How did you know?"

"Mistress predictable." Leysritt answered. I nod, only for Leysritt to shove a plate and some cutlery in my hands. "Table, set."

I… almost don't react to that, silently walking from the kitchen to set the table. I use the same places as before. A few minutes later, Leysritt returns, three plates in hand. One is stacked unbelievably high. She sets that one before me.

Sella and Illya return a moment later.

"Good morning, Saber."

Illya is much more cheerful this time, as if reality has sunk in.

"Good morning, Master."

Dinner begins in silence, yet there is a burning question on my mind.

"Why me? Why summon me?" I ask. "Surely Herakles would have been sufficient no matter the class picked."

"Why not you?"

Illya's response confuses me, and she seems to realise that as she sets her knife and fork down.

"Do you know what I am, Saber?"

"You are… a homunculus, the child of-"

"No. That is superficial. Do you know what I am?"

It was a reality I didn't really want to admit immediately, but…

"You are the vessel of the Holy Grail."

I had hoped against hope that it wouldn't be true, yet…

"Yes, I am."

It seems I would not win this war either. I was doomed from the start.

"Then… you are aware of my go-"

"To reach the Holy Grail, yes. And to do so, you must have a Master."

Illya seems unconcerned of the fact that before the end of the war, she would probably be gone. Did she not know, or simply not care?

"I don't understand."

Illya looks away.

"The final battle of this war will have to be a three way for you to win." She notes.

"And you will die."

"Yes. If I become the Holy Grail, I will die."

She didn't sound very happy about that fact.

"Then you have an alternative?"

"Yes, and I need you to do it. Did you know that father had Avalon during the last war?"

I froze. That was news to me. Very, very new news. I could barely keep the feeling of betrayal from overwhelming me once more, yet…

In an instant, I understood, exactly, what Illya's plan probably involved.

"Then you know where it is?"

"I have a guess." Illya admitted. "As far as I know, it was not amongst the remains of the previous Holy Grail, which means it was either taken or, more likely, father had it with him when he went into hiding."

"Hiding?"

"Yes, here in Fuyuki. It was a single safe house of the Einzbern, I think, but where it is, is long gone. The old man does not consider physically harming father to be worth the effort, compared to destroying him in other ways, and Avalon is useless without you."

She shuffles uncomfortably.

"But… Avalon has another use, doesn't it? It isn't just a sheathe."

No, it wasn't. Avalon was a source of regeneration and immortality. I could already see where, exactly, Illya was trying to go with this, and I certainly wasn't sure I liked it.

"Even with Avalon, I cannot guarantee your survival."

Becoming the grail would almost certainly end her, Avalon or no.

"I know. But it will give me enough time to find out if my alternative works."

"Alternative?"

"Did you think I was ignoring the old man for three months without reason? I think it might be possible to transfer the Servant souls into another vessel."

"You mean, create another Lesser Grail?"

The Lesser Grail was, relatively speaking, a very new thing for even the Grail Wars. It was the Third War when the first one had been provided, a Einzbern homunculus to serve as the reservoir of souls and ensure the Grail could not be damaged. I am a little ashamed to admit I'm the reason why such precautions are necessary.

"Maybe. It's not really that hard to make one." Illya muttered. "Sella and Leysritt were both candidates."

But they weren't used.

"Failures?"

"In the loosest sense of the word." It is Sella who answers that one. "The Mistress is more suited to the role then we are."

That didn't mean they couldn't function as one, though. Just that they had ultimately not been made one.

"I see."

"Then picking me was as much tactical as it was-"

"I chose you because your you." Illya stated. A small part of me had to wonder if that was really true, or if she just needed me for Avalon. Yet…

With Herakles as her Servant, as Berserker… could this Grail War ever be brought to a real close? All she would have to do is hole up in the mansion and pick off enough Servants that defeating her becomes an impossible endeavour. In essence, the strategy was one of an eternal wall. I was not her only option.

Indeed, I was probably the option that was a great gamble. With me, she would have to go on the offence, for she had a Servant who desired a wish.

"Any more questions, Saber?"

"Just one. If you don't have Avalon, then how did you summon me?"

"I don't know." Illya admitted. "It was a pretty big gamble. I put every English ritual I could find from Merlin's works into that circle in the hopes it'd get you. Without Avalon, I can't repeat father's work."

Yet I knew better then Illya here. Merlin's works would have been insufficient to specify me as a Servant.

Either dumb luck had brought us together, or…

No. I knew why Illya had summoned me. It was not even something she had done, but a promise made years ago.

"Promise me you will not make such a reckless decision again." I state. Illya giggles softly.

"I can't promise that, Seibah~" She answers, pushing forward her empty plate. "Shall we go into the city? The morning is wasting away."

I nod, returning to my food and wolfing it down.

-

I am a little surprised to find out that Illya owns a car at all, let alone the restored car that Irisviel had used a decade ago. Thankfully, Illya let me drive without complaint. I'm not sure I could have taken another driver like Iri had been.

"I don't know where much is." Illya admits as I drive down the street dividing the two halves of Miyama. It had taken long enough for her to admit it, though in truth, I wasn't much better off. Even if, to me, I'd been here two or three days ago, the area felt alien to me again.

"Then you don't know where Emiya is." I note. Illya blinked, before seemingly realising her error.

"Father is dead." She grumbled. "Has been for almost five years."

I felt my lips twist into a frown.

That complicated things.

"Then we're searching for a needle in a haystack?"

"Not quite." Illya's mouth twisted into something. I couldn't identify what. Somewhere between hate, disgust and… longing? "He adopted a boy, before he expired. He might know where Avalon is."

It was a lead.

A small lead, but still a lead.

Yet…

"There are two Servant's nearby, I think." Illya noted absently. "Yes, that would be right. We aren't far from the Temple, after all."

"You can sense from that far away?" I ask. Illya blinks, before shaking her head.

"A guess. I can feel magic." She answered. "You feel nothing?"

I shake my head.

"Weird." Illya muttered. "Well, the temple always stinks, but… who else… could be Tohsaka or the Matou? No, the Matou have no Master to put forward given the pitiful excuse for an heir they have. It must be one of the other Master's then."

"One you know nothing about?"

I had to admit, this was new. I hadn't been this blind about the opposition since the first war. Normally, these things were scouted out months in advance.

"Not a thing." She admitted. "Well, what do you think, Seibah~?"

Huh?

Was she asking for my tactical advise?

Well, given that she was positive there were two Servants, and that one thing she sensed was the temple, where Caster supposedly resided, that meant the other Servant was likely either Archer or Assassin. So, with that in mind…
