Loop 1 - Day 1 - 4
[X] Backtrack to the abandoned storefront. Despite Youmu being... Youmu... you feel it's a promising option. It's also roughly equidistant from both major landmarks you've come across so far.
---------------------
"Come, Youmu. We're backtracking."

"Eh?" the girl in question glances at you.

"That vacant property is not ideal. Just look at the glass window covering the entire front of it." you gesture, "It would reduce the amount of privacy we have, and simply covering it up will just draw unnecessary attention."

"Oh... Yeah, I see the point. Why are we backtracking though?"

"Well, for one, I feel we've travelled far enough. Two, that abandoned property about halfway between here and that 'mall' place was the most promising looking place I've seen so far."

Youmu's eyes widen, "Y-You mean that creepy place!? B-But--"

"I'm certain we'll be fine." you say, "And in the unlikely event there is something haunting the place, then surely we can negotiate with it... Besides, do you honestly have any better ideas? If we keep walking, there's a good chance we can be wandering for hours."

You can see Youmu's face strain as she thinks, before she closes her eyes and gulps, "O-Okay, I see your point..."

The trip back to the abandoned storefront is mostly uneventful. As you survey the property up close, you come to realize that the door, in fact, is not locked, and that the lock itself, surprisingly, appears to have been broken. You'd have to remedy that in the future, but for now you wait until nobody's around before pushing the door open.

Immediately, you're hit with the smell of musty air as you step in. Judging from the leftover furniture in the place, it seems like this property used to be a restaurant or pub at some point. You can see a fine layer of dust coating every surface that's illuminated by the light streaming in through the gaps in the wooden boards as well as the open door itself. Speaking of illumination, that seems to be the only source of light in this place so far. Glancing about, you find a switch on a nearby wall. Wondering if it's anything like that electric lighting you had installed in the palace after Utsuho's reactor went up, you idly reach out and flick it.

Nothing of note seems to happen when you do, though you do note several things on the ceiling that you think might contain light bulbs, so it's possible that it's simply disconnected from a source of power. With a sigh, you return the switch to its initial position. You'll probably need to obtain some candles if you want better lighting...

Glancing over at Youmu, you see that the girl is clearly on edge, glancing around the dark building for any signs of anything of undead nature. As she walks, she accidentally knock one of the chairs over, causing her to yelp loudly and draw one of her swords.

"Will you calm down? It was only a chair..." you shake your head, taking a moment to close the still open door, prompting another yelp from Youmu as things get darker.

"H-Hey, can you open that up again?" she shuffles nervously, "O-Or find the candles... or something?"

"If I left it open, it would be obvious that somebody entered here." you frown, "Anyway, this place seems promising enough. Though, I agree it could use a bit more illumination..." you think for a moment, before conjuring a small sphere of danmaku above your hand, lighting up a small area around you in the warm glow of magic. Out of the corner of your eye you spot Youmu cautiously scooting closer to you as the colorful sphere gives off a steady hum of noise. It's not a permanent solution, but you feel it should work for the task at hand.

You also spot something else in the light of the danmaku, a set of footprints in the dust, distinct from you and Youmu's, heading deeper into the building. They seem recent, possibly made within a day or two, if you were to guess. Though you don't see any trails leading out...

"I'm going to check the back." you say, "Perhaps they have candles back there, plus I wish to confirm that we're alone." you gesture to the footprints.

"E-Eh?" Youmu blinks, noticing the tracks as well.

"The lock was broken, and there doesn't seem to be any tracks leading out. Granted, they seem to be older prints, but just in case..."

"Y-You don't think someone d-died in here and their vengeful spirit is wandering the place, do you..."

"It's probably nothing like that. It's possible they left through a back entrance, but again, I'd like to be sure before we fully claim this as our own." you take a few steps forward, before glancing at your companion, "You're welcome to join me if you wish."

Youmu thinks for a moment, shuddering "A-Actually, you go on ahead into the creepy dark areas, I'll uh... s-stay here and keep watch... y-yeah. That's it. Ehehe..."

You roll your eyes, "Suit yourself. I'll be back in a moment, then."

Leaving the half phantom behind, you slink off deeper into the building, following the tracks. Soon, you reach an area that seems to be an abandoned kitchen, which confirms the original purpose of the building in your mind. Moving on, you eventually spot the footprints terminating at what seems to be a heavy, metal door...

You feel something faintly whispering to you at the back of your mind...

[] Open it. It's the only way to be sure.
[] Convince Youmu to come here, then open it.
[] Ignore it for now. If somebody's behind it and decides to come out, you'll probably hear it. Besides, there are areas you haven't checked yet.
[] Other? (Write-in)

An old bar? Huh. Not what I was expecting, but definitely workable. A few candles to calm Youmu down and we're set. Well, possibly unwanted squatters aside...

[X] Open it. It's the only way to be sure.

Chop-chop, no time like the present.

Umm, well. Any ideas? It could be a witch, I guess. No ideas for write-ins (unless we're hearing the voice with our obscured mind-reading, then opening our coat would tell us more), but the safest option from the base ones might be to ignore it.

[X] Convince Youmu to come here, then open it.

Not to bully Youmu, but she's the one with the swords and we're in close quarters.

...

How would a Witch's Kiss affect us? Aren't youkai supposed to have problems with being possessed?

[X] Convince Youmu to come here, then open it.

Only an idiot would open the creepy basement door alone.

Loop 1 - Day 1 - 5
[X] Convince Youmu to come here, then open it.
-----------
You reach for the handle but hesitate. Perhaps it would be better if Youmu was present for this. After all, if someone was behind this door, then perhaps Youmu could aid in talking with them, and if they were hostile, she would be the best equipped to deal with them in such close quarters...

There's something else as well. You're not entirely sure why, but something about the door seems suspicious to you. You could've sworn you heard something attempt to whisper in your mind a moment ago, but it failed, whatever it was...

Leaving the door behind for now, you refresh your improvised light source and begin making your way back to the entrance. Youmu herself seems just as jittery as when you left her, huddling in one of the illuminated areas with one of her swords drawn and attempting to keep calm as much as she can. You also note that her phantom half is out as well, curled up tightly against her body. With a small sigh, you make your way towards her.

"S-So is it sa--I-I mean did you find the candles?" Youmu questions.

"Not yet, though I did find where the tracks lead. Could you come with me for a moment?" you think for a moment, "And for the record, I've yet to see any ghosts, so I highly doubt that would be a problem."

A small wave of relief seems to pass over her, but she still seems a bit jumpy, "A-Ah, that's good... um... w-why do you want me to go back there? I-I said I was fine staying up here, a-after all..."

"Well it would be easier if there were two sets of eyes looking for the candles." you say, "Besides, if somebody was hiding back there, and they were hostile, you'd be better equipped for a confrontation in close quarters."

"O-Oh..." she hesitates, "I-I guess that makes sense..."

"Anyway, follow me. It's not far from here." you beckon. Youmu joins up with you in a moment, making a conscious effort to stay in the illumination of your danmaku. Her phantom half trails behind her, also not straying far from the light.

"S-So uh... if there really is someone there... s-should we really have danmaku out?" she asks after a moment.

"Oh sure, if you'd rather have our meeting with someone we don't know take place in total darkness, than I would be happy to--"

"A-Actually on second thought, keep it up..." she grimaces as you arrive, "S-So is this it?"

"Indeed." You place your hand on the handle, "On three?"

"...S-Sure." Youmu nods, tightening her grip on her sword.

You count down, before pushing the door. It resists your attempts to move it at first, but with a loud metallic grinding noise -- which Youmu did not appreciate at all -- it gives and swings wide open to reveal a dead end room with puddles of water in various parts of the floor. You note a rusty handle lying on the ground near the entrance with evidence that it had recently been broken off.

Aside from that there seems to be nothing else in the room from what you can tell.

"Y-You don't think..." Youmu comments as she glances at the handle.

"It's possible, though considering nobody, not even a corpse, seems to be in here, there might be another exit. Shall we keep loo-" you trail off as reality suddenly begins to distort around the two of you, eliciting a small shriek from Youmu as the air grows colder around you.

Within moments you find yourself in a uniform, icy landscape as blobby snowflakes that look like they were sketched in crayon gently float through the surrounding air. For once, you're somewhat glad you're wearing this coat, though you do notice Youmu shivering.

"W-What just happened!?" she says through chattering teeth, "Why is it suddenly so bright and c-cold!?"

"I'm unsure." your brow furrows, as you glance around, trying to find any landmarks in this barren landscape. You soon spot what seems to be a palace made out of crystal off in the distance. "Whatever happened, I doubt it was natural..."

"Ugh, I-I knew going to that place was a bad idea, but did you listen? N-No!" Youmu frowns through chattering teeth, hugging her phantom half close to her.

"It was the most promising option we had at the time..." you frown, "Also wouldn't that just make you colder?"

"I-It's better than hugging a full p-phantom.... M-My other half is warmer than other phantoms..."

"I see... Anyway, it seems there's some kind of structure off in that direction. Perhaps we might find some warmth, or better yet, answers if we head over there."

"R-Right..."

The two of you begin trudging through the snow, yourself wincing as you feel it make contact with the bare skin of your legs. You honestly aren't the best equipped for cold weather, though to be fair you never expected this... Speaking of, thinking about it, it seems that this is in fact the first time you've seen actual snow in quite a while, despite the fact there's something inherently off about it, which is best evidenced by the odd snowflakes falling around the two of you.

When you are about halfway to the palace, you notice several drifts suddenly form in the snow ahead of you. Youmu seems to notice this as well, judging by how she reflexively tightens her grip on her sword. As you watch, each drift seems to coalesce into the form of a snowman, but with a mask of a human face twisted into a perpetual mocking expression where their heads should be. A pair of spindly arms reminiscent of coat hanger wires, each tipped with mittens shoot out of their torsos as their forms solidify.

Slowly they begin shuffling towards you, making unsettling noises reminiscent of condescending laughter as several of the snowflakes seem to be drawn towards their palms, merging into small, spiked balls of snow. Moving your coat aside just a tiny bit to expose your third eye, you attempt to get a reading on these entities.

What you find is not much of a mind to read, their only thoughts -- oddly identical across all of them -- seem to be a simple "Punish those that stand out."

[] Engage them. They are quite obviously hostile.
[] Attempt to reason with them? While they seem to be single-minded for now, it might be possible that they could be capable of other thoughts.
[] Attempt to get around them. It's not like you HAVE to fight them.

If "Punish those that stand out" is all that's going on in their minds, talking is right out. So that leaves either going around or fighting. Which I'm disinclined towards.

Also I just remembered.

[X] Fly past them

We don't need to walk. This is faster and far less cold then trudging through the snow.

[X] Attempt to get around them. It's not like you HAVE to fight them.

They all have the same thoughts, but it seems to originate from them so does not seem to be a hive mind. I may be assuming incorrectly from the description though. There is no need to jump to violence ourselves yet. Though the creatures seem to be waiting for anything to step out of line as an excuse to do so.

For some reason, I thought the youmu vote was her opening it alone because I'm stupid.

[X] Fly past them

It's really just a specified way of getting around them, so if writein isn't allowed, it's still kind of the same.

These sure are familiars. I'm pretty sure these girls don't work on the same rules as native magical girls, so endurance is vastly less of an issue if we want to blast the familiars, but I'm not sure it's useful to do so.

[X] Engage them. They are quite obviously hostile.

I'm curious what happens if Youmu slashes a familiar with her enlightenment sword.

Loop 1 - Day 1 - 6
[X] Fly past them
-------------------------
At this point you think it's safe to assume that discretion has flown out the window, so you promptly take to the air, feeling some relief at not having your exposed legs in contact with the snow. Additionally, you really see no point in fighting them either, as it would just give you more unnecessary exposure to the elements if you stood your ground.

You notice Youmu taking flight as well, not taking her eyes off the snowmen in the slightest as they prepare to lob their icy projectiles towards the two of you.

"There's no point in fighting them, really." you say, "I'd rather fly past them and get to that potential warmth offered by that palace, do you agree?"

A small nod from her is all you need before you promptly rush past the snowmen. The group of adversaries is quick to start tossing spiked balls of snow your way, but considering what people deal with in Gensokyo on a daily basis, dodging such a sparse spread of projectiles is child's play, especially since they seem to be affected by gravity. More of them emerge from the snow as you make a beeline towards the palace, but their contribution to impeding your progress makes no difference.

Eventually, you arrive at the foot of the palace gate, only to find -- to your disappointment -- that the entire thing seems to be made out of ice.

"Well so much for potential warmth..." you frown as you push the entrance aside.

"Hopefully we can find out where we are from whoever lives here..." Youmu shivers,"Before we freeze to death, that is..."

You make your way through the building, your footsteps echoing through the spacious hallway. You notice Youmu start to get a bit uneasy with how eerily empty this place seems to be as you continue unopposed.

Eventually, you reach a large, central chamber that seems to be the bottom of a massive shaft beneath the main spire of the icy castle, with seemingly no other paths leading out. Stepping out further in the room, you suddenly come to a halt as the entire structure seems to shake, eliciting a small yelp from Youmu.

Glancing about your surroundings, you soon catch sight of something large descending from the shaft above you in the center of the room. It appears to be a giant snowflake made out of several large, two handed swords -- which are definitely not of Japanese make -- arranged radially. The blades themselves seem to be crafted out of pure ice.

At the center of the arrangement of blades is an opaque crystal, shaped somewhat like a heart and sporting a large crack down the middle. With a shudder, the crystal soon splits in half to reveal an oversized pupil and with a blue iris hidden in the center, which contracts as soon as it spots the two of you.

"Satori... what the hell is that...?" a wide-eyed Youmu asks, taking a step backwards as the entire entity seems to start convulsing in agitation.

"I have no idea..." you reply, taking similar precautions. Out of curiosity, you brush your coat aside once more to reveal your third eye, and immediately wince as you're suddenly mentally assaulted by an uncomfortable sensation combined with a feminine voice screaming bloody murder.

[HOW DARE THEY MOCK ME WITH THEIR PRESENCE! HOW DARE THEY! HOW DARE THEY! HOW DARE THEY! NOBODY CAN STAND OUT MORE THAN ME! NEVER AGAIN! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!--]

"Well, it can think, at least..." you massage your temple after obscuring your eye again to cut the connection, "Though I highly doubt it's happy at the moment..."

The halves of the crystal slam shut to conceal the entity's eye once more as it continues to quiver in its growing rage. If you were to guess, it seems like it could lash out at the two of you at any moment.

"Gee, what gave you that idea..." Youmu frowns as she takes another step back, swords raised defensively, "A-Anyway... what should we do...?"

[] Run.
[] Get ready for a fight.
[] Attempt to talk it down?
[] Other? (Write-in.)

Hmm... not much you can do here. Attacking would be the option that most would think of, but the thing is theres not much they know about what they just saw...and being youkai/half phantom they probably have a different viewpoint on stranger monstrosities anyway. I'd almost say best to try to observe it? And if it attacks attack back. Maybe satori could try to probe deeper into the witch's mind and see what's up, although that might be a bit dangerous.

[x] Get ready for a fight.

If we take this literally, then this is kinda similar to Lisain's suggestion of waiting for an attack before fighting back. That may be semantics, though. It's going to attack us.
