Ok, so, normally you'd roll disadvantage, but given you're already drawing a bead, roll without disadvantage, just regular. I have my reasons. 1d20+Hard, which is +2. Then, once someone has done that, roll 3d20-Keen, which is 0.

14-16 First Blood (Ground Edition)
You pulled your shotgun over the table, watching and waiting for the sign of someone to peak around the corner. You had your finger on the trigger, and nearly pulled it when a hand wafted over and tossed a cylindrical object into the middle of the room. You were unsure what you were looking at, but Mattis and Karl seemed to react with horror. After a moment, a burst of smoke erupted from the cylinder, much to the relief of both individuals. Adrenaline surged through you again when another loud blast came from beyond the smoke, blowing apart the window behind you and illuminating where the gunman was. He got another shot off before you pulled the trigger on him, nearly deafening yourself as you heard the wood around him split, and heard a wet, gurgling thump onto the floor.

You spent the next few minutes panting, staring through the smoke to where you assumed he was, still holding your empty shotgun trained on them. The smoke cleared enough to see them lying on the floor, clutching their torso, which had a gaping wound gushing blood just under the heart. The trench gun was on the floor next to him, he wasn't even reaching for it, just trying to keep himself from bleeding out. You finally turned your head to see where Mattis was, he was in the floor next to the body, violently shaking it, screaming at it. You had no idea how you didn't even hear him shrieking in grief less than a meter from you. Karl had disappeared by now. You'd killed people. A lot of people. But flying a plane and doing it always had an incredible degree of separation. You'd never shot someone this close. You'd never shot someone with a handheld firearm. It was exactly what you were fearing.

You dropped your shotgun. You'd shot someone, lethally, it appeared. That fact continued bouncing around in your head, strangely emotionlessly. It felt the same as after you went to that first frozen city. You had a lot of feelings about it, but they were being held back by adrenaline. Your teeth started clattering and your entire body started shaking. It was cold, but not cold enough for that. You watched Mattis stand up like an observer to a painting. You knew what he was going to do, but you were unsure if you could stop him.

[ ] Stop him (say how)
[ ] Let him cook.

I wonder how many people Mattis has killed. Given that they've been a bandit for a decade, I wouldn't be surprised if it was over fifty.

Anyway, I think we should just let Mattis cook. The bounty hunter's going to die anyway.

[X] Let him cook.

[X] Stop him (say how)
-"Wait, we need to figure out why he's here and if he has backup first."

14-17 Himmelgard is a Stand-Your-Ground State
[X] Let him cook.

Your indecision is palpable.

You didn't stop him. You weren't sure if you physically couldn't even manage words at the moment, or if you just didn't care about this murderer enough to stop his fate. Mattis unloaded his huge pistol into the gunman's chest with bangs that somehow sounded louder than your shotgun blasts. He kept pulling on the trigger with hate on his face even when he'd expended the last bullet. He didn't crumple to the ground like you did, though you could tell he was trying hard not to show any sort of emotion on his face past anger.

"Probably just a… fucking bounty hunter. Or Yuri got that fed up with me." He said, coldly reloading his pistol and dropping the spent magazine next to the dead body. "Andrew answered the door," Mattis said while generally motioning in towards what you assumed to be his dead ally.

"I've never shot anyone before." You said quietly, leaning against the table like you were trying to will it to surround you like a blanket. You closed your eyes. You were so, so thankful you didn't actually see him at the moment you shot him.

"Bullshit. You're an ace." Mattis said. You could hear a lighter sparking. You assumed he was lighting a cigarette, but you were facing the other way.

"Not like this! Not with my fucking hands!" You exclaimed, throwing your hands up. Mattis stormed around the table and grabbed you by the collar.

"Look at me. Look at me! You've killed people. You have killed people before. And it was just as real as you shooting him. Don't you dare tell me that it was different, don't disrespect the people you've put in the ground. Get over it." He let go and walked toward the door. "I'm getting the hell out of here."

"I got you your job back." You heard him turn back toward you. You felt like you shouldn't have even said it, for some reason.

"I'm gonna go get the militia. Take a shower and get to bed early. You look like you need it." You spent a few minutes in complete silence behind that table in the same room as two dead bodies. You just stared into space. You felt like you needed to cry, but you didn't.

You wandered back to town, taking a few deep breaths. He was right. You'd killed before. You would be ok. He shot first, it was self-defense. You wouldn't be convicted of murder anywhere for that, especially not in a place like this. You informed Riya and Edgar of what happened with a similar dissociation as when Karl was controlling your body. It felt automatic and had no emotion attached to it. Them squeezing you and ensuring you were unharmed help pull you back to reality and expel a deluge of built-up emotions in your hotel room in a long, cathartic cry. You didn't feel burnt out, at least, just that you needed to rest from that.

Mission time!

[x] Spend all six xp on mastery training to push to another mastery move. Pick either Switch Weave or start the Slipstream mastery. (If the latter, my vote is for Dangerous Merge).

[x] Save the Thaler cause we're doing this one pro bono. Never know what might happen.

I've been starting to realize your planes fall into very interesting niches that all complement each other. Edgar can shoot in more directions than one, and at once, and carry bombs, Riya has two pneumatic HMGs that fucking SHRED, but is slow and heavy, and you have a killer dogfighter.

14-18 Good Omen?
The airship was scheduled to fly on its supply route three days after that. It thankfully gave you time to process your near-death experience in the only way you knew how, intense training. You probably spent more waking hours in the air than on the ground. The only domain you hadn't really tried conquering yet was the area of space just above the ground, so you spent your time sharpening your skills in navigating ground effects. Despite the massive danger, you found the cushion of air beneath your wings easier to turn and roll with. It was situational, sure, but most pilots avoided the ground. In a pinch you could outturn someone with less practice at ground level than you. You were starting to realize you always seemed to start training until you were passing out before the sun even went down when you brushed with mortality.

Fucking hell. You were taking down a giant airship in the morning. Probably heavily guarded. Once again you were risking death, and literally for nothing. Well, you were risking it for the good of the people. That was good enough for you. How long could you keep doing this? You asked Riya about how long combat pilots usually fly for, and she said it's usually not long. The romanticism isn't enough to keep someone around for more than a few years at most, it's just unmanageable for your physiology and mental wellbeing after a certain point.

You were wondering if you were getting close to that point. Well, you had a lot of expenses to take care of after this mission. Or you could sell your plane for a small fortune and retire with Gunther. And hopefully the other two. Then again, you promised Karl you'd get you two unstuck. Traveling up to the Lohner forest wasn't gonna be cheap, and searching for the immortal woman wouldn't be either. You thought about your first mission with Riya. The omen you got, most likely from Rhona, that this was what you were meant for. Finishing a dogfight in one burst. Maybe the Goddesses were uninvolved. Maybe you were just that good. Maybe it didn't have a difference. Fuck it. You had a few more rounds left in you.

Matty and his crew quietly held a funeral on the edge of town. You'd never spoken to Andrew, but he seemed important to them. Obviously. Even if Alex died, you'd probably completely shut down. You didn't know how Mattis kept going. You didn't speak to him until the dawn of the mission. And even then it was just a simple hello. He didn't say it back. You all just loaded up. Seven planes against an unknown force. Probably many. One more mission, let's go.

Roll to engage. Let's do battle. 2d10. I'll let you use your Omake bonus if you want. Whoever rolls gets to pick if they want to use it or not.

Vote time! Finally, you get to pick an advantage to have for the beginning of battle! Two in fact!
  • Act while the enemy is unaware.
  • Catch them spread out
  • Start with an altitude advantage
  • Come in behind your foe.
Vote for two, top two votes will be picked.
