[Exalted, ?] Most High

I'm seeing a lot of risk in the counter-infiltrate plan - and some guaranteed loss, in that it requires us to forfeit any advantages of secrecy and obscurity we still possess - and not that much gain; the most it gets us is being present for the rest of the tourney and a chance at picking up some small amount of information about the Infernals that we wouldn't have anyway. And being around for the rest of the Tourney while the Infernals know we're here and are paying close attention might not be a positive. It sharply limits what we can get up to, and consider what might happen if, say, Saery were to decide to check out these people we've started hanging with!

Drawing the attention of the Infernals is unlikely to end well even if our ruse works: we'd be entirely likely to be handed several jobs "to prove our loyalty" that both advance the agenda of beings hostile to Creation and that saddle us with most of the risks of discovery by the Dynasts, and we're going to face the same problem that people so disliked about Nilul in that that's a credible reaction regardless of whether or not they spot what we're actually up to. If that happens, it leaves us with the choice of abandoning our plan immediately, having already paid the price for carrying it out, without actually getting anything out of it - or committing blindly to doing something really stupid on the hope of a reward.

If people really want to poke the Infernals, please come up with a plan with fewer risks and a better idea of exactly what we'd get out of it. Anything that gives the Infernals the opportunity to blackmail us should be especially avoided!

Uly isn't even good at the negotiation stuff! The Bourne Sesus identity is the crux of all of efforts in the Realm and if that gets blown, we're kinda fucked.

I probably would've been down for staying if we didn't reveal ourselves to the Infernals in Counter-Intelligence, but apparently there isn't a plan for just staying in the tournament and hiding Nilul or anything? I dunno why, 'cause just participating in the tourney gives us the prestige/moolah we wanted in the first place, but apparently that has to come hand in hand with Infernal attention?

Ulyssian did not tower above his peers, nor did he stood out remarkably from them at first glance. He had neither the dwarfing bulk of Mountain Hero, neither the vibrancy of a Tepet Nihul. In that, he and her had seemed much alike. Even his terrifying drive, stemmed as it was by his mortality, had left in him a state she though comparable to hers, for despite her own mundane appearance, and her innate humbleness, Saery knew herself to be among the betters students of the Academy.

Chief among her many qualities was her perceptiveness, which is why, days before he humiliated Resolute Flame, then proceeded to beat a Immaculate Monk as a mortal, she had dismissed those false impression of hers. Indeed, if her own involvement with him hadn't sufficed, wiping out a whole Brotherhood so soon after his Exaltation revealed the truth of the matter.

Sesus Ulyssian was born a tiger in a realm of Dragons, and his Exaltation had only served to balance the scales. The Tiger had gained wings.

When Cathak Polemgaos faced Ulyssian on the field, Saery did not saw two man but two beasts ready to tore each other's apart. The elder, confident in his strength, seasoned by years upon years of battle, a King of his kind. The younger, strangely void of the enthusiasm expected of those newly arrived to power, but still showing his youth : in his eyes anyone could still see the certainty that between one's will and of one's circumstances, the former was bound to prevails. Well, anyone that knew him had she did at least. Uly knew no arrogance, only the unwavering conviction that with purpose, the world could be, must change if one willed it so. How could he have withered his time as a mortal otherwise, pushed so hard against the wheel of fate ? And in the end had he not proved himself deserving ?

Here, once again-

" Well, too bad for your friend."

Barely restraining her sigh, Saery turned toward Raern. He wasn't a bad person really, but being a Dragon-Blood of the Nellens was not simple, theirs was an awkward position to hold, blessed and cursed in equal measure, they were famous for their Exalted status and lived under a system which favored them much less by nature than those of others Houses. Still, all that had little effect on him, no, it was more the expectations becoming a Prince of the Earth bred among their owns. His position here was not a casual gesture of the House, and much rested on his shoulders. Some pettiness could be excused.

" Don't speak too fast, Uly does rarely what people expect him to do."

Turning widened eyes toward her, his answered bordered on the incredulous: " Expected ? You could as well talk of fate here, this is Cathak Polemgaos we're talking about here." Smiling, she only shrugged toward him and turned again toward the arena, she had no wish to agitate him unnecessarily. Beside he would see, this was Sesus Ulyssian after all.

Or maybe they wouldn't see anything at all !

Below the stands they stood in, things had finally begun and she was as bewildered as most of the people rising around her, craning her neck alongside them to see what had happened. The only trace of Uly remaining on the field was the splintered earth where he had stool moments ago and the lingering scent of...was that ozone ?

The thunderbolt that fell straight down upon the waiting figure of Polemgaos answered that question. The old Dragon did not falter, welcoming the strike with a wide stance, essence burning along raised arms, he seemed on the cusp of actually redirecting the bolt away-

Did he crush it ?! No, that wasn't it, the thing had exploded in arcs of lightning, the dozens of cracklings "arms" closing anew on their targets and what was that noise-sonic boom thundered, leaving the air rippling in their wake around the old legend, as if the roar of thunder hurried himself behind the lightning, aware of his tardiness .

Squinting her eyes she suddenly realized that the Cathak was not as perfectly immobile as she had first believed, in fact, he had seized his famous iron edge-she couldn't say when that had happened- and it scythed the air in sweeping arcs, interposing itself with something she only now was able to see as a blurring figure. Those were the clash from which came the shocks that made the earth and the air shivers!

She felt her companion tensed form tighten even further seconds after this realization and she focused quick enough, in the split second that mattered, to Polemgaos crouch then rocket from the ground surrounded in a literal pillar of fire. But then she saw nothing but flames as the whole arena was engulfed, as if some giant had thrown a red blanket upon it. She had time to wonder about the absence of heat, and consider the protections implemented for the meeting in the time of heartbeat before the firestorm vanished suddenly, as a literal disaster blow it away.

Galls of winds fit to flatten houses like paper-cranes fall upon the arena, coming from the same nowhere the sea of flames that preceded it had sprung from. At the helm of this tempest Ulyssian, the edge of Ambition burning nuclear bright. The segmented length of Iron Edge flit trough the air to meet him. A bolt of electricity intercept it in flight, but the weapon doesn't spin away but simply vanish to reappear at its owner side. Almost too late for its wielder though, for despite the distance, Ambition point appear suddenly there, ready to punch right through gut of the legendary hero. By familiarity with these type of tricky weapons or simply because his legend was simply a reflect of the truth, Polemgaos doesn't need Iron Edge to save himself, the palm of his hands close in a clack around the blade, and even as his eye widen and he's driven to one knee by the strength of the blow and blood splash from his closed fingers, turning to burning rivulets of lava in their fall, he endures.

She could only imagine the shock on his face considering the distance that separated them but she couldn't stop herself from putting it there. As the earth beneath him simply exploded from the strength of the blow, she recalled that he had dealt with such blows before, greater ones in fact, and thinks that it is the fact that he has to stop one here, against this particular adversary and these circumstances that surprise him and leave him hurt rather than unblemished. The unexpectedness of these seconds of battle, their surprising intensity, and the simple fact that he had not ended things decisively from the moment they had met, all those things conspire against him. This is why his grip slackens momentarily, why he loses the blade in his grasp in a flash of light.

Still. He is who he is, and already he's rolling away, recovering, as another earth-shattering blow come down, the next ones he block without flinching, although the rhythm at which they arrive doesn't leave him, at first, room to answer. And yet he strove to and soon tendrils of flames meet electrical arcs, spear clash against blade. Stalemate.

A brief one, as while Polemgaos accelerate Ulyssian seem to slow down, in a distorted reflect of nature course, the old proves itself more energetic than the young. Yet it doesn't seem to matter because while her friend has stopped intercepting the whipping length of the Dragon's tail, it never quite manage to reach him. For a time he seem to dance with it, permitting almost sensuously close brush with it, then shying farther away in the air. An unbidden the though that Uly never once touched the ground rise in Saery mind as she watch this ballet. It seem quite incongruous, and irrelevant to what is presently happening right here. Unlike the glow of Ambition, its radiance growing steadily, form dodge to dodge, toward sun-like brilliance. Now that it became manifest, she could almost recall seeing it shine brighter and brighter in the course of the exchanges.

The speed of Polemgaos, growing more extreme by the second, seemed more like urgency than mere swiftness now. If his arms blurred through the air to the point where it looked like he had grown a dozen more to strike with, it was not only to bring down his foe but to stop him. But from doing wh-

When the sun seemed to set in the middle of the arena she had her answer.

Mutually Assured Destruction

That doesn't sound ominous at all.

Nope nothing at all.

But seriously what is about to happen to make that the title of this post?

Ulyssian had settled in, had mentally reviewed the day's events, had briefly entered his battle-trance, had finished his exercise set. The latter was almost unnecessary; his Exalted body didn't seem to require near the level of maintenance that his mortal form had. His form was stronger, his mind sharper, his instincts whisper-keen: and all that before he began to expend effort and push himself to superhuman levels. It was both disturbingly familiar and shockingly wonderful - an artifact of his past lives' memories being overlaid into his mind, he supposed.

Ahh the benefits of being as dedicated to getting stronger in your past life as you are in your present.

He could have retired early, but his head was clear, and he was no longer weary from the day's many social interactions. He looked around his room, took in the quality of the furnishings, the understated opulence. He might as well enjoy it while he still could; come tomorrow night, he didn't intend to sleep here anyway. Fifteen opponents of unknown skill and provenance were simply too many to effectively sabotage, given their defenses. That was likely true for the other players as well. But once the bracket was defined tomorrow, everyone would know their targets. He fully intended to be gone from the apartments everyone knew they'd been given, once that occurred.

Yeah things will get heretic once matches are decided

He walked briefly around the suite, examining the accoutrements there. They reminded him of his childhood, the luxury (though he hadn't understood it then) that he'd been accorded as a likely Prince of the Earth.

Their apartments had a balcony, which looked out over a portion of the gardens. The evening was subdued, the night sky like soft velvet. Likely the competitors had quelled any excessive partying.

Guess we aren't the only ones who want to be ready for the tournament.

Nilul was sitting on the banister, slender legs waving idly in the wind, staring up at the stars. Absent the earthly light, those stars formed a glittering stream across the sky, the embodied forms of Creation's celestial gods.

He came up to rest his arms against the banister, exhaling quietly, looking out into the world. Of late he'd come to rely on his hearing more than his sight, but his eyes were still keen, capable of picking out the patterns on individual leaves in the garden below. Many of them, he noted, had calligraphic inscriptions on their surface, blended to resemble the leaf's natural design. Prayers to Sextes Jyles, the Immaculate Dragon of Wood. Let me be fertile. Let my children grow strong. Let me find a truly potent substance for tonight's celebrations.

That was the Realm.

Nice

"Have you ever really looked at them?" Nilul spoke up, voice gentle. "The stars."

"Seacrown is always so bright," she continued, "you can't really seem them, not even from the towers. Not like this. All the stars are my enemies, all the stars in the sky. But you'd probably already figured that out."

Huh I think she's opening up a little to us. How well did we roll?

"I had," Ulyssian acknowledged. It was not difficult to discern that she was somehow connected with demonkind, with the Dragon's Shadow.

"Do you think," he continued, "that we might ever be enemies?"

And Ulyssian is blunt as ever. Then again there's a reason he's shitty at social expect for intimidating someone.

She turned to look at him, smirking. "Uly, why would you ever think that?"

He shrugged. "I was just considering that we would be able to do quite a lot of damage to each other, in that case. You could out me as Anathema, and perform various horribly incomprehensible social things. You could betray me at a critical moment, having called down an insurmountable tide of enemies. I could decide beforehand to simply turn you in to said enemies, or overcome them and hunt you down. No disguise would save you."

Sounds like some of the discussion we've had on this very topic.

"You could probably kill me right now," she mused, "even through my protections."

"There's that too," he acknowledged.

I love how nonchalant they're both about this. Though it i true that Ulyssian could easily wreck Nilul and they both know it so there's no point in stressing over it.

"So," she asked, "since we'd make such good enemies, should we instead just stay mediocre friends?"

"I dislike mediocrity," he said. "If we are to be friends, what would it take for me to trust you, and for you to trust me, fully? The only thing I've thought of was to ensure we could destroy each other utterly, and mutually."

"Our current relationship is too inefficient for me. Your a pathological liar which makes it impossible for me
to actually trust you. So to fix that let's make so we can equally screw each other over. That way we have no choice but to trust each other."

Nilul laughed. "That... that's actually not such a terrible plan. You know me better than I thought, Ulyssian."

"You shouldn't underestimate me," he joked. "I am Zao's secret apprentice, after all. While undercover, I discovered that you were Anathema."

Huh he told a joke. To Nilul. Could he actually be softening up to her?

"The only thing I consistently underestimate," she retorted, "is your colossal denseness."

He wasn't particularly heavy. "What?"

Face palm. Ulyssian you should remember parts of Ody's relationship with Lea so you should have no fucking
excuse. Then again Lea explicitly said she was going to seduce Odyissial so it'd not like he could be dense when she was that blunt.

"Never mind," she shook her head, laying a hand on his shoulder. "Can I ask you something?"

"I'm certain you have that ability," he demurred semantically.

"You're obnoxious," she said. Her face turned serious. "Hero."

Nope. Still an asshole to Nilul and I love it. His snark at Nilul is half the fun of these scenes. The other is the way Nilul doesn't let it bother her though she's actually saying we're annoying and being serious. I think she's actually trying to connect to us. Seriously how good did we roll?

What about him?

"He pledged himself to your family. He basically swore away his life to protect you, without a second thought. There was no downside for you in that arrangement. But you turned him down."

He began to respond, but she raised a hand. "I know why humans do that sort of thing. I've taken advantage of it, more than once. But you... I really didn't expect that of you. I thought you were more practical than that."

Well duh. He's our friend. Friends shouldn't have to force each other to work together but considering your parental figures its understandable you're having trouble grasping the concept.

"I could swear to unconditionally protect you from all who desire to take you, no matter how outrageous their forces are," he said. "Go ahead, sanctify it."

Wow Ulyssian really is trying to show trust in Nilul. As much as I might have reservations about her, I do want to befriend Nilul bit she has to meet us halfway. Though it looks like she might do it.

For a split second, the tiniest sliver of a heartbeat, Nilul's composure faltered. Her breathing changed, just slightly.

The recovery was, of course, almost instant. "You know I wouldn't," she said hastily. "But... you weren't lying, either."

"You were in my position, just now. There would have been no disadvantages for you to accept. I imagine it would actually have advantaged you a great deal. And yet you didn't."

"I could have," she hissed. "You've no idea- That was stupid, Uly! You've spent too much time around Moon. Friends can't always be faithful and true, there are other pressures, other factors. The real world doesn't work like that."

Nilul is understandably cynical. She has the Scarlett Empress and the Ebon Dragon as parents so it's pretty much impossible for her to have a positive outlook or believe in people.

"It works like that in stories," he replied easily, looking out at the gardens. "The world should work that way, don't you think?"

"Yes," she said exasperatedly, "but that doesn't matter. Stories are just stories. Do you know another word for a story? A-"

"A lie," he said. He turned to look at her. "But a story can be more beautiful than reality. A lie can be more beautiful than the truth. Just because reality is stronger, doesn't mean that it is right."

If there's a conflict between an ideal and the world. It's not the ideal that's wrong but the world.

Fortunately for Nilul Ulyssian specializes in the impossible.

"That's just words," she said, muscles tense. "Words and lies and stories. People talk. Anyone can talk. But in the end-"

"I tried to unmake the world, once," he said.

Wow. He really is going for the MAD option by revealing his past.

Nilul squinted at him. "All right," she declared, "I'm wondering if my lie-detecting skills are broken."

Heh. Nah it's working just fine. Uly is more bullshit then you could imagine.

"It was my past life, in the First Age. The later parts I don't remember well, only generalities. I was called Odyssial, and all in stars in heaven were my enemies, as much as they are yours. I felt the world was too cruel, and sought to remake it. Heaven would probably protect even you, if you told them where and how to find the reincarnation of Odyssial, who shattered the Godspear. Especially if you told them that he still had his memories. Those who would dare try to kill me, would want to make the attempt before I grew strong."

.sh-shattered

HE FUCKING SHATTERED THE GODSPEAR!!!!!!

Isn't that thing impossible to break!?

Fucking Odyissial man. The dude who makes the impossible possible. Kinda glad we didn't go to heaven. Half the population would've died from heart attacks and the other half would thrown everything(even the kitchen sink) at us in their attempts to kill us.

"Wait," she said. Her face was scrunched up, and there was a look in her eyes that he'd never seen from her before. "You, you- You're so hopeless! You shouldn't talk any more. Look at what you've gotten yourself into. Telling that to me? To me!"

She sniffed, then paused, and clenched her fist, trembling. "My... my mother is the Scarlet Empress. My father is the Ebon Dragon. She's been plotting something with him for at least two decades, since I was born. I think it involves me somehow. All the demons and Infernal Exalted under his sway, he's told to keep an eye out for me. If things turned out too bad, I was thinking of betraying you, maybe, or at least abandoning you so I could get away. But they probably won't care about you, as long as you give me over first. Oh, you should probably pay closer attention to Moon when you're alone together. Nothing dangerous, just something you've missed."

She told us the truth of her origins......

YESSSSSS. WE GOT THOUGH TO HER. And far faster then expected.

"There. That's not enough to make us even, but that's all I have. That's... the truth." She winced. "Mutual destruction, right?"

This is a big step for her. She actually is making an attempt to trust us.

She's going against every instinct she has her. I'm so proud of her for doing so. We have to show her she didn't misplace her trust.

"I'm... sorry, that must have been hard for you. I was insensitive, like I often am. I can still swear that oath if it'll make you feel better," he offered.

He is apologizing and being sincere about which shows he is being serious about being actual friends with Nilul.

"Oh, shut up!" she snapped. "When you were a mortal, how many times a day did you push through, even when it was unbearable? I'm not so spoiled that I can't, that, that I can't even do this," she swallowed. "Just sit up here and look at our enemies with me, okay? And don't talk."

He did so, and she abruptly hugged him. For a long moment they sat silently, before Nilul spoke.

Awwww. That is adorable.

"A friend I can trust," she murmured into his shoulder. "It's nothing but a lie. But, you're right. Just because it's a lie, doesn't mean that it's wrong. When you're stronger, I'll help you destroy the world. If you want."

And another true companion has been gained.

"That's not a phrase I ever thought I'd hear anyone say," he mused.

Tell me about. Destroying the world would normally be a bad thing.

"Hush," she said. "Don't ruin this with your talking. You're too frustrating... I never thought that I'd make a friend I could trust. Especially not you. Hero? He's unlikely to betray anyone. You? You're kind of an asshole."

I'm surprised too. Hell I'm surprised that Uly actually trusts you now The self named "Princess of Lies" whose the child of the fucking Ebon Dragon more than Saery or Hero. I guess you both surprised each other.

"Thanks, friend," he answered sarcastically.

Have I mentioned that I love the Ulyssian/Nilul interactions?

She looked up at him, the stars reflected in her eyes.

"I'm still going to be me," she said, "so don't expect every word from my mouth to be the Unconquered truth. But, if you ever want to know what I really think, just ask."

am fucking giddy right now. We're teaching Nilul the power of friendship. Saery will be so proud when she learns of this.

The next day, drawings for the tournament were held. It was an excellent opportunity to cheat, and they'd prepared themselves well. Ulyssian, clad in the Storm Armor, entered the Pavilion early in the morning, to birdsong and morning mist. Nilul wore a black silk qipao with her hair done up in chopsticks, darting about, a few paces ahead or behind. Above, the halcyon dawn burned violet and incarnadine, spreading livid streaks of red across the slowly lightening sky.

Uly and Nilul ready to cheat like they have never cheated before. And with full faith in each other. Glorious

Nilul's plan, to wear down Cathak Polemgaos by depleting his reserves of will, had two peaks of effectiveness: one, immediately, when he'd had minimal time to recover from her mental assault at the feast, or two, as late as possible, when she'd had more opportunities to strike.

Given the calibre of competition at this tournament, even Ulyssian didn't have favorable odds of winning. Thus, they decided to attempt to fix the drawing so that he could encounter Polemgaos early. If he won, he would gain significant prestige even if he didn't take the tournament, and if he lost, well - he would have wasted minimal time that could have been spent training.

Come on Uly go big or go home. Do you relly want to waste months getting E4.

At least, that had been the plan, before Ulyssian found the Mnemon girl and her retainer with his hearing, and pointed them out to Nilul from a distance. Immediately she stepped into his shadow, keeping him entirely between her and them, and began to subvocalize, so quietly that even he had to actively strain to hear.

"Those are Infernal Exalts," she said. "Equal to Solars. Uly, we should run. We should get out of this place as soon as possible."

He retreated back into the complex, nonchalantly but at speed. Only when they were safely ensconced behind several layers of wall, would Nilul speak again, and only sub-vocally.

"We have to go soon," she said, voice urgent. "Please believe me. If you have any questions, write them. They might have hearing like yours."

Wow Nilul went into freak out mode once we told her about the Infernals. She's all like "we need to get the hell out of dodge yesterday." Makes sense since she did just tell us the Infernals are after us. She's even answering any questions we write down.(ask because she fears their hearing might be on par with our own.

[ ] Drop Everything and Leave

Hmm if we leave the Infernals won't about us or Nilul. If she's exposed then we could get exposed and then everything goes down the drain. Even if they don't do that, knowing Nilul is our companion/friend means Ebby will be focusing on us and likely notice who we are which means Hell is going to be
determined to kill us immediately and possibly expose us to everyone else

Downsides is that we leave the tournament meaning no E4. Our reputation is stained so no help with our Satrapy posting and we won't figure out what the Infernals are planning here which could be very important for us to know.

We have a chance to win and get E4 and figure out the Infernal plot.

Downside is that it puts Nilul and us potentially in grave danger if the Infernals recognize her . Nilul is obvious is going to not want to stay and us ignoring her concerns could break the bond we just made.

[ ] Write-In - You may wish to assemble your own plan, with your own balance of risks and rewards. Write-ins using information collected from Nilul will receive an effectiveness bonus.

We come up with a third option using info we gain from Nilul. Potentially better or worse than the other options depending on the plan we make and how effective we can make it.

So much this. Are we really about to give up the fact we're Anathema to Infernals. People who work for the Yozi and are enemies of Creation. People who if they discover our friend Nilul will either try to kidnap her or inform daddy dearest that she's here and he'll send someone more suited to the task to kidnap her. People who could reveal us in attempts to strengthen their own positions in the realm? People who we do not know at all.

We haven't even told Saery and hero we're Anathema for fear of their reactions to it. If we can't even trust this secret with some of our friends including a oerson who was willing to sell himself to us then why the hell would we trust it with people who have all the reason to use it against us. That doesn't just endanger us but also endangers Zao,Ivory, and ll of our friends would be in danger too.

For info that they might not give up? We don't even know if we can beat them in a fight or ensure that they either don't escape or get te information out in someway. We're dealing with a solaroid sorceress and a solariod master assassin who were sent to a tournament that has some of the strongest in the realm here. We would be fools to underestimate them or assume that we can stop them if shit hits the fan.

Its better that we defeat Cathak to get that E4 boost to get some benefit from this endeavor and book it before things potentially get worse. I'd like to switch out Nilul for Ivory after informing Zao what is going on but I do not want to reveal our identity to enemy combatants at a place that has some of the strongest dragonblooded here. That's just asking for us to get exposed and ganged up on. It also means we don't have to convince Nilul to stay and potentially seem like we're brushing her off.

Nice reaction otherwise, but it seems to cut off here for some reason. I think this has actually happened to other people too recently. SV maybe for some reason posting earlier saved draft versions instead of the actual post, I think?

Yeah I noticed that when I was counting the word count it was an earlier draft but I thought had fixed everything.

Apparently not. Thanks. And think you for the compliment on the reaction.

Unfortunately I was a bit tired when I made most of it so it's not as good as I would like.

I don't have any great attachment to the tournament, but I feel like we're here, Rihaku created all these interesting luminaries to interact with, we might as well stick it out and try to get something out of it.
Candesce said:

Making a lot of assumptions here. One is that we'd be hanging around these guys instead of forming an uneasy armistice while we pursue our various goals. The longer we spend around them, the more they learn about us.
handed several jobs "to prove our loyalty"
We're not joining up. There is no "loyalty" here. We're representing a rival power – one that is not necessarily opposed to them, but not one that is subservient to them either.
anything that gives the Infernals the opportunity to blackmail us should be especially avoided!
… How exactly would they make good on that blackmail, considering they themselves are Anathema?
Vitaris said:

If we lose to Polemgaos first thing, then there's really no necessity to contact the Infernals at all. It's only if we stick out the tournament that the rest of the risks come into play.
then we persuade Nilul and hope she doesn't screw us,
She could run, sure, but betray us to the people that may be hunting for her?

This feels like fearmongering.
then we hope the Infernals can't see through her/our disguises
This is a sticking point, sure, but why would they have taken the one charm in their charmset that defeats supernal disguises, when Infernals are the primary users of such disguises? It's like blowing 1/30th of your power on a skill that only works against your allies.
then we reveal our Anathema status to negotiate with them,
Well, we could try and get through negotiations without bringing up our own Solar Anathemaness? Just playing the mysterious muscle to our Deathlord master? They would know there's something about us, but not what.
there isn't a plan for just staying in the tournament and hiding Nilul or anything?
Sure there is. That's potentially safer than sending her back to the academy alone. Do you prefer that?

I don't have any great attachment to the tournament, but I feel like we're here, Rihaku created all these interesting luminaries to interact with, we might as well stick it out and try to get something out of it.

Making a lot of assumptions here. One is that we'd be hanging around these guys instead of forming an uneasy armistice while we pursue our various goals. The longer we spend around them, the more they learn about us.

We're not joining up. There is no "loyalty" here. We're representing a rival power – one that is not necessarily opposed to them, but not one that is subservient to them either.

… How exactly would they make good on that blackmail, considering they themselves are Anathema?

If we lose to Polemgaos first thing, then there's really no necessity to contact the Infernals at all. It's only if we stick out the tournament that the rest of the risks come into play.

She could run, sure, but betray us to the people that may be hunting for her?

This feels like fearmongering.

This is a sticking point, sure, but why would they have taken the one charm in their charmset that defeats supernal disguises, when Infernals are the primary users of such disguises? It's like blowing 1/30th of your power on a skill that only works against your allies.

Hm, so it sounds like you'd prefer to be a DB that is insanely strong, and have Nilil pretend to be a Deathlord's emissary or something? That would help against being outed as Anathema, though a DB working for a Deathlord would not be in a better position if outed. Maybe it could be spun as some kind of deep ultra cover quadruple agent plan on part of Zao, though?

I should probably focus on my Reaction, but I do feel it's important to note that there's a good chance Ayala can figure out we're not a DB from watching our match with Polemgaos alone, so admitting to that isn't necessarily that big of a loss.

Rihaku noted before that an expert on DBs could be able to figure out inconsistencies with our disguise and, given Ayala's research proposal in the last quest, it seems almost guaranteed that she is in fact an expert on DBs, their powers and their Anima or at least that she will be soonish and, given that she likely had the resources and motivation to start researching DBs even before her Infernal Exaltation, her already being far along enough to notice our non-DBness is a real possibility.

It's a shame that Infernals have that direct connection to Yozis there.
Really make it hard for us to subvert them without knowing.
Of course, if the Infernals are still designed to gtfo from the Yozis by their own powers... Hmm. They're just "newly"-exalted though.

Also, I guess the Mnemon's like Uly of the 2nd? I am curious about her.

Oh wait! She's Ayala. Ah.
Yeah.
She managed to devise a way to empower DBs. She'd know we're not one asap, as @Pipeman says.

Well, she actually devised an idea that would have required the entire workforce of the Infernal's research division to pursue and wasn't guaranteed to succeed even them, but, yes, her plan was to fuse DBs with a 3CD in order to create a Yozi flavoured Elemental Dragon equivalent who has the potential to grow in strength of a Celestial Exalt and the ability to create an entirely new Aspect of DBs by empowering a bunch of mortals like the Elemental Dragons did to create the DBs originally.

Odds are her preliminary research included a lot of studying of DBs.

Well, I do want to point out that the benefits can be greater than you anticipated here: our current estimates of the infernals' plans and abilities are super vague, but Nilul interacting with them for a prolonged time could potentially tease out or infer almost everything about them. Keeping abreast of infernal activity in Creation is critical for its long-term security, after all. and if they're rogue Infernals not working for the Ebon Dragon, you could get a near Solar Circle Sorceror as an ally. That's like insanely strong. An SCS is one of the most potent forces in this bedraggled Creation.

Doesn't this also imply the inverse?

But yeah, the possibility that they're rogue Infernals is the biggest temptation. I'd like the opportunity to investigate them, it's just that I'm not terribly interested in giving them the opportunity to investigate us in the process - it seems quite likely that we've got more to lose than they do, in that exchange.

Potentially, if they are as capable as Nilul in that regard. The chief difficulty is in ensuring that you do not expose too much information, which means you may have to limit your contact with them severely. The way Read Intentions actions work means that they don't get to deduce your true Intimacies without you providing some sort of evidence, behaviorally, to justify that, but your Guile (the mechanical defense, not the player) is low enough that they'd alnost definitely succeed if you did slip up. However, Nilul might be able to cover you in this regard somehow.

She's almost certainly better at all things social than they are, since they put their XP into Sorceress-ing and killing dudes. This includes many things, but especially - given her themes - lying.

[] Counter-Infiltration - Impersonate, along with Nilul, a pair of Anathema whose goals are not counter to those of the Infernals, and who they would be willing to negotiate with. Attempt to extract information from them this way; maintaining the cover will allow you to stay at the tournament and possibly win it. You may attempt this even if you do lose to Polemgaos, though convincing Nilul may be difficult. Working out the details of each step of this plan (Convincing Nilul, Detection Justification, Faction, Her Identity, What to Say) will lower its risks.

Okay, we've got some steps to work out here. My ideas aren't necessarily the best, but better than nothing, I hope.

Convincing Nilul: Honestly, I think this is probably the hardest step; we're betting a lot on the idea that they won't be able to blow her disguise. But the rewards of figuring out what the Yozis' agents are actually doing in the Realm are potentially immense, from her perspective- Zao could hide her under his wings for a long time, but if she's going to ever leave his nest she's better off knowing who her enemies are and what they're up to. At least by doing it now she'll have Ulyssian with her in case something goes wrong, and he's absurdly deadly.

Detection Justification: I strongly favor claiming a custom Evocation tied to an artifact, since Evocations are unique and not easily discerned, if at all, by others. However, we may not be able to acquire the necessary props in time; if not then we can default to other options. The easiest is that a contact of ours (who we won't identify because of reasons) tipped us off that there would be Infernal(s) amongst the contestants here and we determined who they were by observation and process of elimination. This means that we don't actually have to claim to have seen through their disguise at all, just have someone well-connected feeding us information. If that's also not viable for some reason, we can claim to have a specialized Awareness charm or possibly something that detects modifications of Fate around us (for Sidereal-hunting, says our story, but given how Ebon Dragon disguises work it would ping them too).

Faction: Neverborn, without question. Nilul literally told us she would willingly help us destroy the world last update. The best lies are the ones as close to the truth as possible, and given that the entire goal of the Neverborn is to destroy the world and thereby end their suffering, we are practically members of their faction already. Of course, we want to make a new world as a replacement and aren't interested in a lot of the trappings that working for them carries, but details details.

Now, there are certainly some risks to claiming that- the Yozis don't actually want the world destroyed, and neither will most rogues. But "destroy the world" is a ambitious thing to be after and I don't think we should have any trouble admitting that we don't have a workable method in hand yet so we're just gathering personal power and contacts for now- contacts like them, if they're open to some favor-trading. If they're loyal servants of the Yozis, considering that the Yozis worked with the Neverborn to get their Exaltations in the first place I don't think they'll have an official policy against working with their servants.

Nilul's Identity: I'm leaning toward a social-oriented Abyssal. Do we know Abyssals are a thing, though? If not we might have to go with her being a dragonblooded associate of ours. No matter what we pick we obviously don't tell them straight out what either she or Ulyssian "are", but we'll want to have a consistent story that we're acting in accordance with even while apparently keeping secrets. I don't think Nilul can reasonably pass as a solar. Her identity will need to be something that we can publicly bring in as our second viably, though- if we end up pulling her completely out of nowhere, possibly claim that she's a long-time Lost Egg associate of Zao's? Stack a century or so of apparent age on her, claim she's been out in the Threshold, and it becomes vaguely believable. There are probably better cover stories.

What to say: The big theme is that we want access to their power. As Ulyssian it's known that we're Zao's heir, which directly means that we've got strong influence on at least some aspects of the Realm; obviously they're into Realm politics as well. Since both of us are playing dangerous games with ambiguous but ambitious objectives, some under-the-table favor-trading could be of great mutual benefit- having a solar tier sorcerer willing to deploy even a handful of effects on our behalf could drastically improve our options, if they're working with the Reclamation they can get us hellish artifacts on the cheap, and if they're independent then they could really, really use some allies. If nothing else, we can at least arrange not to get in each others' way as we both attempt to take over the Realm.

Edit: Right, need an actual vote too.

I think, given how mote starved you are likely to be this fight, Sword and Sorcery meditation might be better specifically for this battle than Full War Regalia, or at least not notably inferior - it does, after all, raise your Strength, which is free extra damage that doesn't cost Essence. However, you would still lose the utility ability to contain your anima, fly, etc. But remember that you can contain your anima using Immortal Blade Triumphant anyway, as long as you have time to prep.

Yeah, I'm assuming we'll win, buuuut... there are no guarantees. Especially not with the supposedly immortal DB superman.

Nah, wasn't what I meant. Use us as cover for her escape or something; she mentioned she was considering doing it in the last update.

Sidereal Resplendencies, Lunar shapeshifting, our Solar whatever-it-is-we're-doing... Supernatural perception is a broadly applicable talent.

Being a Deathlord's emissary is only marginally better than being Anathema them. They're both grody from the Realm's perspective. Either one being revealed effectively kills Uly's pull with the all things Dynastic.
Sure there is. That's potentially safer than sending her back to the academy alone. Do you prefer that?
I thought the split was between fighting Polemgaos and buggering off/ doing this negotiation stuff? If we could stay and not engaging with the Infernals, that would be the best option. I just... don't think it is an option? Not without a write-in that's probably already too late, anyhow.

I thought she implied that she'd do it under the belief that we'd be safe because we'd voluntarily give up all our information on her (so it's not really a "betrayal" imo)
