Whaaat?!
Actions have consequences and pissing off our House means we have to deal with what happens when you piss off your House?
There is no way we could have known!
Creation hung in the balance.
This is honestly still a bit hard to get my head around myself.
I mean, there are 150 other SOlars around, 300 Lunars and who the fuck knows how many DBs but apparently everyone else reaslly enough of a shithead and the forces opposing Creation are powerful enough that it ultimately all comes down to Uly saving everyone in the next two decades or everyone dies.
It was strange, to think that. Arrogant, maybe. A day ago he had been a mortal trying to eke out relevance in a world that dismissed mortals. Now, the most powerful Dragon-Blood alive had entrusted him with the fate of nations. It wasn't that he didn't care for his friends - to the contrary, Ulyssian cared much more for their welfare than the Realm's in general. He was no patriot, nor a devout Immaculate, and was not particularly connected to the House that, up till now, had scorned and ignored him. But this was an opportunity to grow strong, at a time when strength was sorely needed. And his strengths did not fall in the arena of interpersonal skills, Ulyssian knew that all too well.
I suppose this is also something to keep in mind.
For Uly this has really been only a day since he was concerned with not being irrelevant in the world and he wasn't even remotely aware of how bad things really stood.
We on the other hand knew Uly would be Exalting as a Solar and expected to save the world since the start of this incarnation of the Odyssey and knew about the dire straight Creation was in even longer thanks to the previous quests and meta-knowledge.
It's not really surprising that unlike people who have been scheming about how to take over the Realm and gain more political influence since the beginning and had numerous opportunities to direct Uly into being more suited for that roll, Uly himself still gives a lot more argument to the weight of what he's actually good at and therefor should focus on than readers might think.
After all, he's still the guy who a day ago spent his entire time training to become as much of a combat monster as he possibly can be because that was the only way for him to advance and stay relevant with his skillset.
Uly himself was a lot less or even not at all involved in processes like discussing the purchase of the Presence Excellency, which prelude options might make him more capable at social stuff, whether we should be spending Solar XP on covering that weakness of his and so on.
As Odyssial, he'd had Lea to take care of it all. Theirs had been a complementary partnership, he on the physical battlefield, and she on the social one. Nilul was not Lea, and though she was his friend, he did not trust her with the unconditional reserve necessary for her to take up such a role. Not that she would even say yes, given how many favors he already owed her.
This is kind of important to keep in mind, though.
While Uly certainly has a point in that focusing on what he's good at can lead to better results, there will be serious consequences to this decision and without Lea or even anyone who could come close to her skill or trustworthyness to cover that weakness, he'll be facing a lot more problems in that regard than Odyssial did, especialy since Odyssial was likely never in a situation as politically delicate and nigh impossible to solve with the strength available to him alone as Uly's situation in the Realm.
"I can't," he finally told her. "I'm sorry. Please give my regards to the others, and... I would be very grateful if you could mitigate the damage of my absence. But there's simply no way. The Headmaster needs me to grow strong, quickly."
It is however a bit surprising how well Uly manages to articulate his internal conflict and heartfelt motivation here with so few words in spite of his atrophied social skills.
Normally, you'd expect any attempt of Uly's to resist an attempt by Nilul to socially influence him to be decided with pure willpower and integrity.
Nilul sighed. "I only like failing in physical contests, stupid," she said softly.
Heh, even Nilul acknowledges that he did well in presenting his case.
Continuing to push now would be like kicking a puppy.
"But," she continued, "I'll see what I can do. It won't be much! I can't draw too much attention to myself right now, not of the kind that would make enemies. And being your friend... it's going to make a lot of enemies."
It's kind of weird how any instance of Nilul being a good friend and for example clarifying her promise to do what she can with regretful explanations of why it won't be much comes with a slight undercurrent of questions like: "Is she really being genuine or is she just covering her bases and milking Uly for some potential guilt?"
I suppose that ambiguity between genuine niceness and self-serving sociopathy that she herself may not be able to draw a line between, is really part of the character's charm and why she manages to garner so much of my interest.
"If any of them bother you, send them at me," he said. "I don't like to fail in any contest, unlike you. Hence I avoid the social ones. That's efficient distribution of labor."
It's kind of funny how Uly's banter is probably dead serious, even when specifically (or perhaps unintentionally?) used to defuse tension with a somewhat humorous statement.
"My, my, the Headmaster's prodigy student! Newly Exalted and already he thinks he can win any duel," she smiled, mocking but friendly.
It's nice of Nilul to take this opportunity that Uly can't expect to be able to murder all his problems quite yet.
However that doesn't seem to be a piece of advice we've taken to heart.
"But, I guess you are supposed to have been Exalted for years and years now." Her voice became gentler, surprisingly so. "Watch out, Uly. One of these days I may just take you up on that."
The more solemn reminder of just how serious the situation actually is, not only Uly's but also Nilul's own, is probably appropriate here, espcially since this version of Uly doesn't actually know anything about how dire Nilul's situation is, beyond that she's an Anathema very capable of pretending to be a DB.
That Nilul is actually willing to at least somewhat warn him that her own issues may be bigger than he thinks and that protecting her is not necessarily going to be easy or safe is rather endearing.
"If I save your life, that cancels out all the favors I owe you," he replied, "and then some. And don't call me Uly."
Right, not even Uly could be that dense, so I'm going to assume he actually took the hint, is almost certainly trying to defuse the tension and is at most being slightly serious here.
"Oh, Ulyssian," she affected heartbreak, placing two palms over her bosom, "how could you believe that there would be favors owed between us, fellow Incompetents?"
Ah, the Incompetents Society. Good times.
I can't quite express how sad I am about the fact that it doesn't make a reappearance for the sake of preparing Uly for Establish Connections.
"Because I know you," he said dryly.
She laughed. "That you do, Uly. That you do. Maybe too well, now that I think about it..."
Well, that's certainly not ominous at all.
"Leave me alone," he grumbled.
Hmm.
I can't quite say whether Uly is right to dismiss Nilul's annoying theatrics that easily.
I mean, obviously Nilul isn't letting Uly hear them unintentionally and is in fact primarily just annoying him, but Uly does kind of lack the context of just how dark Nilul's situation is and this could easily be a double bluff on Nilul's part.
"Your wish is my command, oh fearsome Anathema," she turned around, waving amicably. "Ta-ta~"
Of course, even if that were the case, Nilul isn't giving Uly any reason to believe she wasn't just messing with him for fun's sake.
Swallowed by the shadows, she disappeared, the red fading into the black.
And again I can't help but feel this phrasing seems a bit ominous for some reason.
Making Nilul think Uly (and by extension Zao) are kind of fucking up their chances to pull this off by not following her suggestion could have serious consequences, because Nilul has almost no choice but to look out for number one.
And even if she accepts that increasing Uly's personal power is a viable way to get through this, not playing ball with House Sesus is still a course of action that will bring down negative attention on the Academy and Uly himself which potentially puts everyone else there, including Nilul of course, into more danger, which makes this somewhat suboptimal an approach for her, especially since Uly isn't always going to be standing next to Nilul where he can use his increased combat prowess to increase her safety.
Calibration. Moon, sun, and stars drifted through the void in languorous chaos. Strange powers and quirks of fate abounded. Out there, in the world, among the people or the great wilderness of Creation, this was a time of wonder, bewilderment, and terror. Gods dispensed paradoxical blessings as demons trouped through Creation, howling nameless-canticle songs, bound by laws long forgotten. A closet door could become a portal to the shimmering void, fires might fall up and heal those they burned, and the mirror could show one's face aged by eighty years.
Emphasizing just how goddamn weird Calibration can get is probably rather important for anyone unfamiliar with Exalted.
Otherwise it also makes for a bright and flavourful contrast to Odyssial's Calibration.
That was out there. Here, in the silence and the dark, Odyssial meditated on war. Destruction thrummed through his veins as his mind played out centuries of conflict. Shut out all sound, shut out all sight, shut out the very input of the senses, and what remained was instinct, the well of battle-skill that he had dipped into, very lightly, against Resolute Flame. Knowledge deeper than language, motion swifter than thought. Through the oculus of that knowledge alone he saw the world and its essence. He immersed himself in it, a man lowering himself into arctic waters: freezing clarity rushing past him at vertiginous speed; cold that went deeper than bone, deeper than marrow.
I'm actually surprised that his training is more meditation focused than his attempt to start training before Nilul interrupted him indicated.
Then again given that he's basically using Calibration's nature and his recent Exaltation to "cheat" himself into more power, largely by delving into Ody's memories before it becomes harder to access them again, it's probably to be expected that after he gets gimself started properly through actual training and memories start surfacing he switches to ridiculously intense meditation to drag up as much as he possibly can.
Calculation, without mercy or sentiment, carefully and ceaselessly cataloguing all possibilities, every weapon that he could wield against the world, charting the path to victory.
Yep, definitely delving into Greatness 10 Heartlessness 10 memories here.
Then again, I suppose the only memories that wouldn't overwhelm Uly right now haven't reached either of those heights quite yet.
That was one facet, one way the lens could be turned, one color of light scattered from the prism. Also there was fury; rage as to boil the blood, unyielding and eternal, sheer power and fire that could reduce a dragon's heart to ash. Also there was precision, the careful patience of the archer, the longbow's curve like an extension of the arm, the bowstring tuned like sinew. Also there was emptiness, the death-dealing sutra, the cessation of self into the perfect slaying mirror. All the facets he gathered, fusing every lens, un-shattering the lightbeam, producing the pure and indivisible whole. Excellence beyond circumstance, perfection beyond appeal. That was the power now settled into his bones, into his self, into the essence of the being called Sesus Ulyssian, who had been called Odyssial.
Now that's rather interesting and probably important to remember.
For all that we keep railing about Heartlessness 10, Odyssial was a lot more than just that stat.
His unyielding Fury against the Primordials and all the other facets going into being a truly ridiculous killing machine should really not be forgotten when considering what kind of person he once was, especially since the Heartlessness stat alone wasn't even remotely sufficient to get him to reach Greatness 10 and surpass even the Unconquered Sun.
Earlier than expected, Empty Moon was to wake, and Ulyssian emerged, layer by layer, from his trance. First the kinesthetic sense, then touch and hearing, then scent and smell, and then the blackness of his eyelids and the inside of his skull, so different from the utter absence of sight that was the meditation.
Really liking how the step by step description of waking up illustrates how long getting out of this trance actually takes Uly and how that in turn drives home how deep this trance actually was and in fact had to be.
He had not accomplished all he set out to do, but nonetheless he headed into the world again. Calibration was nearly over, and he met with Zao outside of Moon's hospital room.
Well, that's kind of disappointing.
Not long enough to get the full use out of Raw Power, but way too late to do anything about being absent from the festivities.
"All right," Zao said, abruptly without greeting him. "I'll go in first, to tell her the truth about Anathema, as well as the arrangement we now have. Then you may speak to her."
It's nice how Zao is so grumpy you can't really tell when he is and isn't particularly annoyed at the world.
Ulyssian nodded.
Zao nodded, and entered the room.
Minutes later, Zao emerged.
Really love how minimalistic Zao and Uly's interaction apparently is when they aren't arguing about something.
Shows rather well how much on the same wavelength they tend to be.
"She is still weak," he said, gruff. "Say your piece, and then get out."
Stating that Zao is being gruff almost seems redundant.
Lving the "and then get out" though. Nothing but an overprotective father can be that heartwarming by being a grumpy asshole.
Ulyssian entered, gently shutting the door behind him.
Uly is being so thoughtful.
Moon was sitting upright, supported by an embankment of down-stuffed pillows. A square of soft white felt had been set over one of her eyes, and tied to her head with silk. Her other eye shined brightly, however, and a smile was present on her face.
I'm getting the feeling that it's not going to be all that easy to not just endlessly repeat "DAWWW!" for the next scene.
"Uly!" She exclaimed, patting the chair next to her with a plaster-encased hand, "Sit down, I want to give you something."
Oh, god, I'm already feeling horrible for ever having argued to go partying.
That's just not fair.
Tentatively, Ulyssian did so, taking a seat on the chair at her bedside. Moon was notoriously tetchy whenever he hurt himself. Thus, he was surprised to be enfolded in a warm, abrupt hug. The shock of her soft body and the pristine scent of her hair sent a frisson of energy through him.
The way Uly is being all careful and unsure of what to do is really rather adorable.
It's also more than a bit hilarious that he didn't see this coming when she told him she wanted to give him something.
"Thank you," she murmured quietly, into his shoulder. "But you're never to do anything like that again."
Man, Moon is really pulling out all the dirty tricks in order to get Uly to stop with the suicidal stuff, isn't she?
Still, asking Uly not to be suicidal is basically a lsot cause.
"We'll see," he replied, carefully hugging her back. Moon wasn't the type of person who often required saving. "Are you all right?"
Heh, he isn't even contemplating the possibility of listening to her request.
I can't help but think betting on Moon's general competency making this kind of thing unnecessary in the future is not going to stop Moon from giving him shit the enxt time he almost kills himself for one reason or another.
"Mm-hm." She said gently. "Headmaster Zao told me everything."
"That's good," he said. "You don't seem very surprised. About the Immaculate Philosophy... or anything."
It's interesting how they both give the reveal of the truth more attention that questions about her physical well-being.
Might have something to do with how resilient Exalts are, but I like what it says about the signficance of the potential betrayal and relief Moon felt upon hearing the truth.
Moon giggled slightly. "I know I should be, but inside, I feel so light and giddy! It's very strange. When Zao said in front of everyone that you had always been Exalted and you were his secret successor... I, I felt so foolish, I was afraid that you'd been lying since we first met. And... I was just being silly. Uly is too terrible a liar to do that."
Just goes to show what kind of ridiculous conclusions intensely emotional moments and great fears can support, though I suppose Zao and Ivory piling the Social Charms onto their speeches could have had something to do with it as well.
"Basically correct," he mused. "It was a pretty inconvenient place to Exalt. If Zao hadn't acted, we would all have been in trouble."
More than a bit of an understatement, but I suppose this isn't really the time or place for phrasing that more seriously.
Moon shook her head. "No, because then they would have had to fight Sesus Ulyssian as a Solar Anathema. And they would have lost."
Moon's trust in Uly really is adorable, though the fact that this was in fact within Odyssial's capabilities is honestly all kinds of terrifying.
"Maybe someday," Ulyssian said. "I still need a bit more time. But, I should be strong enough to at least make up for all the times you protected me."
Nice to see him be a bit more realistic about this stuff, though the "a bit more time" is honestly adorable.
"Oh, Uly," Moon released him, putting a gentle palm on his cheek, "I'll always want to protect you, no matter how weak I am, or how strong you grow. But," she sighed cutely, "I guess we can take turns now... Oh! I forgot to tell you how happy I am for you! You finally Exalted!"
The two of them are just so god damn cute.
And now I have to think about a hypothetical quest where Uly Exalts as a Wood Aspect DB and Moon really gets her Perfect Brotherhood of Zao's students that she apparently was still firmly expecting to get at some point.
"Finally?" He raised an eyebrow. "I wish I could have been as certain as you."
I wish
I could have been as certain.
I still remember the last Quest where we were told so goddamn often that there is really no guarantee that Uly will get his Celestial Exaltation at some point.
"Out of all of us, you deserved it most of all, Uly. Please do believe that. Though, it's alright if you don't believe in yourself," Moon patted his hand. "I do, and that's what counts."
That's just so goddamn adorable. Though I can't help but wonder whether seeing Heartlessness 10 Odyssial for a bit would get Moon to rethink this assertion.
"Of course," he rejoined. "After all, the genius, Empty Moon, is never wrong."
"Just so," she said primly.
The two have so much chemistry I really find myself wondering how Lea and her "design myself to be Odyssial's perfect partner" stick works into that.
I mean, from what little we know about Lea she doesn't really seem like Moon at all, so either it comes down to Odyssial when he met Lea being very noticably different from Uly when he met Moon or me overlooking something very significant.
They sat like that, in companionable silence, for a while. It was almost like the end of one of their sparring sessions, except he was usually the bedridden one.
Even after actual sparring sessions and not just the stuff Moon does to him after he's done something stupid again?
"Uly," Moon said shyly, "I, ah, only have one eye available right now. Would it be all right if you read to me?" Hesitantly, she held up a leather-bound copy of The Violet Antechamber.
Smooth, Moon. Really smooth.
Been getting advice from Nilul, eh?
He took it. "But, you can read with one eye."
Sadly everything short of sandpaperis in fact literally too smooth for Uly to notice.
She pouted. "It would be slower."
On the one hand, I sympathise with Moon over Uly's denseness.
On the other hand, I just want to slap her for saying something that's so obviously not going to clear things up for Uly.
How fast did she expect him to read? "Well, alright." He cracked open the book, preparing to speak at a blistering pace.
Do you see what you've done, Moon?
Do you see what you've brought upon yourself?!
"Um, don't sit there," Moon objected, scooting over and patting the bed. "I, ah, want to look at the pictures! This bed is too big, you should use it as well, and get comfortable."
Bad Moon! You shouldn't take advantage of the mentally handicapped.
A great fear loomed over him then, that somehow the Headmaster would at that moment barge in and berate him for taxing the university's badly injured top student. But Ulyssian ignored it, and sat on the bed alongside Moon. She hugged his arm with both of hers, as was her custom, and rested her head against his shoulder. A deep warmth and contentment pervaded him then, that everything was as it should be.
Uly's instincts really are way smarter than he is, aren't they?
She's clinging to his arm with both of hers, "as was her custom", and he still doesn't notice?
Godammit, I can feel Nilul's pain.
"Without calculation," he read, "failure. Without ruthlessness, tragedy. So spoke the Sage of All Under Heaven, back in the times before myth..."
Apparently Moon managed to distract him enough that he forgot to ruin the mood by reading at a ridiculous pace.
Good for you, Moon!
The Magnus had indeed said that, but it was after the Primordial War had ended, hardly a time before myth. Ulyssian, who was Odyssial, forced himself to ignore the historical inaccuracies, and eventually found it surprisingly easy. Minutes later, Moon yawned pertly, doing her best to stifle it in front of him, and not long after that, she had nodded off.
I can't wait for Uly to get frustrated at historical inaccuracies when he can't distract himself with the pretty girl hangin onto his arm.
Ulyssian wished for a moment that he could stay, but ruthlessly quelled that instinct. He extricated Moon gently from around his arm and set her down to rest. As for himself, there was more training to do.
I do rather like that this scene is still not enough to keep him from training, though the fact that not being there might let Moon recover in peace more easily may have had something to do with that.
Or there would have been, had Zao not intercepted him shortly after to subject him to an intensely grueling and not particularly productive sparring session. And so, Sesus Ulyssian's Calibration came to an end.
Goddammit, Zao.
I mean, I get his need to enforce the rights of wrathful fathers everywhere and beat the shit out of the guy who didn't listen when he told him to "say [his] piece, and then get out", but this is valuabelt training time you're wasting here!
Don't you understand?! WASTED TRAINING TIME!
What a travesty.
Two days after Calibration, crisis struck.
Well, fuck.
"They're here for you," Zao said, watching wearily from the window in his office. "I had thought your family would at least have attempted to mount a defense. This goes beyond mere displeasure. They may well disown you, soon."
So House Sesus is really pissed, the Siddies are on the move and House Sesus is going to make things even worse for Uly soon. I stand with my previous statement.
And now I suddenly don't feel as guilty more about arguing against spending our time with Moon.
"I am a bit surprised they were able to mobilize so fast," Ulyssian replied. "the Wyld Hunt usually..."
I'm surprised Uly actually values his own opinion on the amtter when he stayed away from Dynasts as much as he possibly could and was outright told how bad the situation with his family is twice now.
"The Wyld Hunt usually does not have every wheel lubricated by the helping hand of a dozen Sidereal allies," Zao remanded dryly. "Ivory's faction has made their move. They are not happy about her apparent defection. Unwilling to risk one of their own, nonetheless they will take one piece of mine for the piece I have taken. That is how they see these things."
Then again I'm not actually sure Uly is quite aware how deeply involved with DB politics and the Wyld Hunt the Siddies actually are.
"We may as well go see what they want," he concluded. "Perhaps this can still be turned to your advantage, somehow."
At least Uly sees no reason to complain about paths not taken and stuff. Gotta retain that optimism.
Five Immaculate shikari, one of each element. Each a wholly dedicated warrior-saint of the Elemental Dragons. A Perfect Brotherhood. Their leader, an austere Immaculate of Water whose razor talons gleamed golden in the daylight, was speaking to Professor Verona when Zao approached.
Well, at least the people here to kill us aren't pushovers, which is almost a compliment?
Have to say this scene does illustrate rather well the nature, strength and signficance of the opposition we're apparently facing to anyone not that familiar with Exalted.
However I don't think Verona was introduced in this quest yet, though seeing how understanding his exact predicament here isn't essential to the story and given that he likely won't be that important, I suppose that's not too important.
"Lung Feng Zao," said the Water Aspect, giving a perfunctory bow. Her voice, throaty and almost hoarse, nonetheless carried with a clear tone across the flagstones. Ulyssian's keen sight picked out pale scars across her throat, near her larnyx, cuts like a tiger's claws would have made. "We are here on behalf of the supplicant Resolute Flame, who reports that your successor, Sesus Ulyssian, became Solar Anathema when he intervened in the Ranking Tournament. Flame claims to have seen Ulyssian's Caste Mark of the Forsaken with his own eyes. Further, he claims that this Ulyssian possesses infernal disguise magics, capable of deceiving even the mighty."
Nice detail with the tiger's claws. Makes her seem a lot more intimidating without interrupting the flow by tacking on some statements about how strong they are.
Also, fuck Flame for this, though I suppose he was the only one that could make the complaint without it seeming even more ridiculous.
A crowd had already begun to gather. Hushed whispers percolated. Ulyssian saw Nilul chatting amicably the front, drawing all attention to herself. Moon stared worriedly at him, then remembered that they were supposed to publicly dissociate, and hastily looked away, pretending to agree with Nilul.
Well, damn.
Them publicly announcing this already has the potential to deal us a lot of damage.
Slightly concerend that Moon messed up the ruse a bit here, but I suppose it's somewhat believable that with the "betrayal" being fresh enough that habit might overcome it and the outrageousness of this claim she'd forget herself for a moment.
"A patently ridiculous claim," Zao said. "Do you have any proof, besides one unstable student's hearsay?"
Zao isn't losing any time to use this opportunity to discredit Flame either.
I wonder though, does Ivory even know of Flame's signficance to Anys Syn's plans here?
"House Sesus has not provided any genealogical records, even upon repeated request," said the Water Aspect. "We find this suspicious. Sesus Ulyssian, if you have nothing to hide, submit to the judgement of the Dragons."
What a bag of dicks.
Still while Sesus is obviously doing this intentionally, I wonder if they were aware how quickly the Immaculates would use this to make their own move.
After all, while House Sesus may have wanted to cause Uly and Zao some trouble after they insulted them like that, it's hard to tell how deep their displeasure really goes, especially when Siddies are doing their best to make things turn out as badly as possible for us.
"I'm at odds with my family," Ulyssian said, mostly for the benefit of the crowd. "But I am prepared to face the Dragons. What judgement do they ask?"
For all that Uly is comparatively kind of crap at social stuff it's easy to forget that his stats in that regard aren't outright horrible and that he's in general smart enough to come up with good strategies to approach an issue.
"Either," grumbled the Earth Aspect, whose steps caused the ground to tremble, "you are a newborn Anathema, or you are the well-trained secret protoge of Lung Feng Zao himself. If you are truly the latter, then you must be formidable indeed in the arts of battle."
I'm a bit surprised that the test they are offering is in the area Uly is most proficient in, but I suppose part of that is that it makes it more likely he'll go for their trap, part that it'd be more suspicious if he refuses and part that he'd immediately die from failing in combat, so there's no chance of him escaping after failing and Zao would have to intervene for his sake immediately and openly.
Also interesting that the Earth Aspect is speaking up here.
Is he the best of them at provoking people or is he just speaking out of line because he really wants to kill us?
"I am but a young stripling, compared to the likes of Admiral Zao," Ulyssian replied, injecting a touch of barely constrained Sesus arrogance. Hopefully that was believable.
Well, given how one of Odyssial's chief flaws was more or less arrogance, I think Uly is pretty good at "faking" it now.
"Indeed," continued the Earth Aspect, "but the Admiral is mighty, greater than all of us combined. A newborn Anathema cannot defeat a Perfected Brotherhood of Immaculate shikari, not even if its life is one the line. But a Dragon-Blood who Exalted young, who has been trained for years by the legendary Zao... ought to be able to give a stronger accounting of himself. The Dragons will grace him, they will lend strength to his blows, and he may hold us off."
More than a bit of bullshit for multiple reasons.
The most important think to adress is probably that "ought to be able to give a stronger accounting of himself" doesn't necessarily mean "killing us proves you're a DB", seeing how it might instead prove we're an extraordinarily powerful Anathema.
That was transparently false. Even if Zao's story were true, he would struggle to survive against five fully ordinated Immaculate monks. This wasn't an inquest, it was an execution.
Though given that it can be refused it's probably more an attempt to weaken Zao's political support and distract him from other concerns.
No, though Odyssial. Not an execution. An opportunity. Working in concert, Five Dragon-Blooded were indeed a formidable threat. But he had faced odds far more fearsome in the past.
Luckily Odyssial is pretty much made of pure bullshit.
"If I prevail, then," he shouted, adopting the stance of a glory-seeking bravo with more skill than sense, "this outrageous accusation will go away? It will be unquestionably confirmed that I am, indeed, Blood of the Dragon?"
Good of him to cover his bases thoroughly.
And once again, I'm kind of glad that the role he's pretending to fill is probably not wholly inaccurate given that Uly's skill at social deception is at least somewhat deficient.
"Unquestionably," answered the Earth Aspect, who for all his solemnity could not hide the beginnings of a satisfied grin. "But it would be to the death, young Sesus, I trust you understand that."
Yeah, I'm pretty convinced he's just impatient and bloodthirsty and was not necessarily supposed to talk up.
He seems a bit too focused on getting his duel and too little on eroding Zao's support, so they can get at Uly later on.
"This is ridiculous," snapped Zao, whose fury now enclosed them like the palm of a titan. With a thought, he could destroy all five shikari, crush them to pulp. But that would have effects that would redound across the Realm. "You dare accuse me of harboring an Anathema? Of lying to my honored guests? With a word, I could have you expelled from the grounds. Not even the Dragons may gainsay me here."
Heh.
Almost entirely forgot that Zao was also there and that they were publicly insulting the shit out of Lung Feng Zao.
I have to wonder how much of his fury is really faked here, because even if they are totally correct in their accusations, this is a pretty serious insult that they are apparently expecting to get away with and Zao has all right to demand a ridiculous amount of respect from people.
"We are prepared to die," answered the Water Aspect quietly. "But we will not go, Lung Feng Zao. You may well be complicit. Slay us, and you will see that the Dragons may gainsay whomsoever they desire, wheresoever they desire."
And here we see the Water Aspect taking control again.
Odds are the plan was more or less that they simply play the very dedicated Immaculates and show themselves willing to do whatever is necessary regardless of how much of Zao's wrath they will have to endure personally, but the Earth ASpect was confrontational enough that Zao just became a lot more justified in telling them to piss off and be thankful he hasn't killed them yet.
