If we're strong enough to ignore the life saving measures a Vane has in place, we should probably just directly attack him? Should a dark lord really care about public opinion, of all things?
Considering we need the empire to remain standing? yes.If we're strong enough to ignore the life saving measures a Vane has in place, we should probably just directly attack him? Should a dark lord really care about public opinion, of all things?

Why would he not support trampling on the younger generation of other clans and cucking their treasures? It shows the might of Yong clan as the most superior clan and spreads the glory of the house, while promoting healthy competition between the younger generation.Wasnt it said that if we wreck our clan's rep gramps will kill us?
Even at the second vote we still had the option for hidden synergy, but the voters just don't appreciate motherhood, poison, or swordsmanshipI wonder if we could have gone:
[ ] A Spoiled Brat
[ ] Mother, Violet Reaper
[ ] Father, Lord of Vermin
[ ] Grandfather, the Unbroken World
For the first vote. It would have been.. interesting. The implication is that the whole Yong family spoiled us to ludicrous levels! Hidden synergy!
Strictly speaking, Baenlixnaier, Archmage, Throne, Mother, Granfather was a theoretical possibility. Of course, we entered Consolidation with only 1 BP..Even at the second vote we still had the option for hidden synergy, but the voters just don't appreciate motherhood, poison, or swordsmanship![]()
Fulfilling our Oaths. See: getting BP for destroying treasure. The third method is unknown but apparently fulfilling our oath to Baenlixnaire to screw over the Vanes will give us one.
The reference to ivory towers worries me somewhat, as it is often used to refer to intellectual pursuits that are excessively divorced from reality and academics who don't notice the world pass them by. Unless we go by the biblical interpretation? Has Nameless taken to flirting with Suizhen when we weren't looking? Cause that sounds like a bad idea all around.
Bureaucracy as the sole force of good in the corrupt Imperial Center, struggling to hold their ground against the evil Sects daily. How noble! How self-sacrificing! Or maybe they're simply a bit less corrupt than the alternatives because they're afraid the sleeping dragon would wake up if they go too far.Day by day, the hills of Yong rolled by, giving way at last to the mist-wreathed gorges of Imperial Center. Here, in the resplendent nexus of Empire, its tragedy and magnificence both were in full bloom. It was a land of eccentrics and beggars, monsters and thieves, of ignoble monks and virtuous charlatans, of warring sects crossing blades, all under the nose of the sleeping dragon at Empire's heart. It was said the Emperor saw everything and cared for nothing, and only the unceasing diligence of his unappreciated bureaucrats saw the Center held together against the laissez-faire warfare of the Sects.
We might have dodged a bullet by avoiding the Imperia Center. If this is the sort of competition inspired by mere natural treasures, just what would these people do for an Artifact like our Ring? Of course, our father's reputation would have provided us with non-insignificant protection, making people wonder if we're wearing the Ring this way intentionally...It was, of course, a beautiful land. Each breath tasted of prevernal clarity; freshwater brooks lapped delightedly down megaliths towering above cloud-stained lakes, and the jade-leafed forests possessed an elegance that equaled the intensity of their brethren in Yong. If occasionally one also tasted the iron tang of blood in the wind, that was only to be expected of a region populated by so many Cultivators with so very little in the way of unexploited natural treasures.
Sometimes one needs to dance around the subject and slowly sketch out the limits of what is proper. At other times one needs the bluntness of a hammer to address the issue. Seems Nameless has judged her more receptive to this approach."Cultivation," Nameless said, addressing his traveling companion. Suizhen, perched on a nearby treetop, broke from active reconaissance to look at him.
"Yes, what of it?"
"Kong Zang," he continued as if he hadn't heard her. "The Monster of Utility. Gentleman-Scholar. Dragon of the Unbounded Sky, the Rapacious Eagle, the Pitiless Lightning. Lord Marquis-Protector of Eastern Kong, the Elder Beast of Reason... You despise him, don't you?"
This is almost painful, Suizhen. Although this complete failure at subtlety makes her easier to manipulate, I still can't help feeling sorry for her. It's also kind of a strange feeling to be in the shoes of a socially adept character handling an awkward one after the litany of weirdos from the last few quests."W-What?!" Suizhen nearly fell out of her tree. "I- No- Er, Kong Zang is nothing more than my honored great-great-great-grandfather! I-I would never be unfilial to the rightful lord of my family and its lands!"
Hmm. There's been some back-and-forth discussion about how Kong's death would influence the Empire's stability, but Nameless seems to treat the possibility with a certain degree of flippancy, doesn't he? It might be that he thinks he can convince her otherwise in time or that she stands no real chance, and is only humoring Suizhen, but that's not the feeling I get from his words. He knows that his task is in many ways even more impossible than killing the Elder Beast, and banking on being able to turn someone away from their life's goal would be unwise. To me it looks like he intends to fully endorse Suizhen's vengeance and exploit the results in his favor."Don't bother denying it," Nameless waved her off. "You've done an excellent job guarding my body, which leaves you no time to spare guarding your expressions. You're an open book, Suizhen. You want revenge - or justice. I don't disapprove. A cultivator of great talent should possess ambitions that are just as great. Though I didn't bring up the Patriarch of Kong because I wished to discuss his life in particular."
Scientific... cultivation. Oh wow. This just blew my mind. I mean, it has to have started somewhere, and the scientific method is a natural tool for discovering new knowledge, but that Arts centered on this idea still exist? Considering our focus on Diagram and its own scientific roots, this seems almost perfect for us. That we'd so luckily encounter a practicitioner of the Kong Arts who would be willing to teach us right as we started Cultivation... well, I don't want to bring fate and luck into this, but we sure are living a Charmed Life, aren't we?Suizhen wilted in relieved resignation. "Then, what are you getting at, sir?"
"Scientific Cultivation. You dislike him, but you still practice the arts your great-etcetera grandfather pioneered. I've always been fascinated by that path. The other Clans practice Cultivation as a regimen, more ritual than reasoned procedure. Recently I've begun to feel that the path of Kong cleaves closer to the bedrock truth. Cultivation is a trick, scavenged together from curious interactions between half-forgotten magic systems from Ages past."
That the symbol of our father's love is Spirit Cocaine - toxic and strong in equal measure - is fitting, but sometimes there's no need to look too deeply. Not everything our father does has to have double meanings, sometimes the Spirit Cocaine is just that - a performance drug to help us cultivate.Nameless sat on a rock and took out his father's Spirit Cocaine. The brick was as-yet untouched, safely entombed in its waxen shell. For now, it was a symbol of his father's love. But once he began to cultivate in earnest, it would be nothing more than a resource.
This is kind of why I wasn't very interested in Forbidden Arts. They can enhance our cultivation speed and give a host of other advantages depending on the specifics, but they're called Forbidden for a reason, and that's not just to keep the cool stuff from us. Sometimes we can mitigate their disadvantages through various tricks (like being immortal), but there might be consequences we won't recognize until it's too late and will have to spend additional effort on correcting."That we have reached the heights of Titanhood," he continued, "speaks not only to the unfailing resolve of the first cultivators, but also their scientific dedication. The horror stories of Heterodoxy are drawn from such histories, how one misstep can warp one's Cultivation base irreparably. The current Orthodox Path is one of the few truly reliable routes through the thicket of supernatural self-augmentation. And, as your Patriarch says, there can be no improvement without transformation."
I don't know whether to be glad she is capable of enough impartiality to recognize genius even in people she doesn't like. On the one hand, it's a remarkably sober point of view, but on the other hand, she won't ever underestimate us should she change sides in the future. Though perhaps that was a given, what with our Thrice-Greatness.Suizhen nodded, at ease now that the conversation had moved to a topic in which she was well-versed. "My great-great-great-great-grandfather is an evil man. But nothing prevents evil from grasping correct insights. Its ability to do so has been integral to its accumulation of power over time."
...Surprise! You though we were a simple mage, but we were actually Thrice-Great!He nodded. "In that case, I would like you to explain the Cultivation path of the Kong family to me. In detail, as if I were myself a Cultivator."
She blinked, then her eyes softened. "But why? You practice a Forgotten Art and thus cannot form an Ego Barrier. The path of the Cultivator is barred to you..."
Nameless smirked. "Suffice it to say that my interest is not only academic. Normally, you would be correct. But, while Northern Yong is not the Experimenter's Realm of the East, we have our humble projects as well, headed directly or indirectly by my father. You could say that I'm one of those projects, into which he's invested a considerable sum."
The reaction would have been insulting if it wasn't completely justified. Maybe we should dial down on the hazing?"This is a scam, right? Or, you don't have anything to gain, so... a prank?" She glanced around, alert, with wariness born of painful experience.
:lol"Suizhen, I've discovered a secret of yours, it's only fair that I offer one of my own in return," he said seriously.
"B-But why would you trust me with something like this?" She asked fearfully. "I-If true, you could shake the whole Cultivation world, could overturn empires!"
"What exactly do you think killing Kong Zang is going to do?" He asked concernedly.
Eh, no need to go that far, we're probably going to announce it as soon as we decide on the best way to sell out."W-Well," she babbled. "I, er... you do have a point," she said, deflated. "Well, thank you for trusting me with this, sir! I'll guard your secret with my life!"
I see that Nameless is trying to entrust her with at least a modicum of social acumen, enough to recognize his jokes perhaps? Or maybe he simply enjoys yanking her chain, it's not like we're going to seriously care about her debt by the time she'll be able to pay it back."Now that you know, you just want me to help you kill Kong Zang," he pouted.
"N-never!" Suizhen exclaimed, rising to her feet, shaking her hands fretfully. "You've already been so generous to me, I would never impose such a burden-"
"That was a joke, Suizhen," he frowned reprimandingly. "You got scammed again. At this rate, you won't earn this decades' wages back, let alone the next three."
Shareing secrets is a pretty good trust-building exercise. First she entrusts us with her secrets, and before she knows it she'll be transferring all her money to our account to support the poor Yong heir in his takeover of the Empire."S-sorry, sir. Can I take another loan?"
"Of course," he said. "I'll add it to the ledger. And there's nothing to apologize for, I've already entrusted you with my life. A mere secret is a small thing is comparison. And I do hope that you trust yours with me as well."
"Absolutely, sir!" She saluted.
"Well you shouldn't," he frowned. "Haven't you learned anything?"
That sounds suspiciously like a love confession. Don't do it, Nameless! Don't you dare fall for a Heroine, it never ends well for the villains! We might get betrayed, or worse, converted. She laughed, and fell silent for a moment.
"Sir," she said gently, "In your dealings with others you may appear to do evil, but the end result always supports the good. Even when you've had richer and easier targets, you only strike at those miscreants who attempt to sully or undermine the Imperial Order. I don't mind being scammed by you. It is my honor to be your bodyguard."
Her eyes really were the blue of a clear, cloudless sky.
Some of these eyes' deeper abilities (the way she read Nameless so easily) and their effect on the owner's sanity kind of reminds me of the Scales Sign. It's probably not a real commonality, just a coincidence in certain parts of their functionality, but certain consequences migth repeat themselves. After all, it is all too easy to focus on the negatives, seeing only greed and selfishness in people around them. That Suizhen is so accepting of others despite the clarity of her vision speaks well of her, I think.Kong Zang had endowed his bloodline with many gifts, but the Eyes of Kong were undoubtedly the most famous. When not in use they were open-faced and blue, but once invoked they grew storm-dark and cloudy, twin heavenly wheels churning with mist. To optically witness internal energy was the merest of their tricks. An ordinary Cultivator would not have been able to apprehend his Mordant Fire at a glance.
Lord Kong's experiments had not been without cost; for those blessed or cursed enough to be born with eyes of Suizhen's purity, less than one in ten thousand would survive to the age of puberty, and of those only one in ten would grow up sane.
I think abstaining from casual cruelty just to gain a short-term advantage isn't something to be derided, but that might just be me. Baenlixnaire was a millennia-old lich that didn't care about anything except hsi vengeance, we want a bit more than that out of this life.He grimaced, a bare shadow of the internal conflict that raged within. Was he actually a big softie? Had even a decade-and-half of Yong Liefang's tutelage failed to purge the weakness of his past life? Baenlixnaire would have been disappointed.
Ah, we wouldn't want to find ourselves at odds with her either, but that might not be entirely up to us. She's very accepting in many ways, but in some her views of good and evil are pretty absolute. Someday we might find ourselves making a choice she won't be able to tolerate."Truly, those eyes miss little," he finally said. "It's just as they say. 'To face Kong is to strike nothing but emptiness.'"
"And to stand against Yong is to press against the mountain," she replied. "Truly, I would never wish to find myself at odds with you, sir. I am happy to be your sword-arm, whensoever it is needed."
We need a cat ASAP. Stroking a goatee is just not the same!"I'm so proud," he said. "Trying to make me feel sorry for you so that I won't scam you in the future. You really are beginning to learn..."
"I-It wasn't a scam!"
"But it could be, Suizhen," he said, thoughtfully stroking his goatee. "It could be."
Hmm. Whatever Cultivation's true origins are, it's true that new magic systems seem to supplant old ones with each Age. Diagram butchered and replaced racial magics (though the Elves are a notable exception), Cultivation stomped the Age of Truth... so as a thought experiment, what kind of system would have a natural advantage against Cultivation, for it to successfully usurp Cultivation's place as the top dog? Truthfully, I somewhat struggle to think of something that would overcome xianxia's endless escalation.---
Eventually he got Suizhen to teach him the Cultivation Path of Kong. At its outset, the art of Cultivation had been an outlandishly expensive and dangerous process of mental fortification, physical augmentation, and psycho-spiritual self-surgery. Only an eon of experience and failed experimentation had yielded the modern Orthodox Process, a Process so reliable it was eventually elevated above the mere technical understanding of the art - in all regions but one.
A self-adjusting cultivation method that is uniquely suited to each practitioner - the more I hear about it, the more I like the idea, the terrible dangers of taking the wrong road notwithstanding. One can't help but admire Kong Zang's genius for blazing such a path forward if nothing else. Still, he is only one of the Titans, so the Arts of others must have something going for them as well, even if they wouldn't be as suited to Nameless' current personality and abilities.Zang of Clan Kong was the original Heterodox Cultivator, and his Cultivation Path stuck closely to the art's former empirical traditions. Rigorous technical knowledge was demanded of a Cultivator at every Stage of his path, and with that knowledge came the ability to alter and adjust one's self-modification in order to extract the unique potential of each individual. It was a stark and unforgiving methodology that bordered on the Forbidden, but its fruits were undeniable. The world bowed to Yong Shen in respect; to Kong Zang it bowed in terror.
She's in good company then, for Nameless aspires to deicide. What is a Titan compared to that? That Suizhen had taken it upon herself to murder this most unmerciful of Titans was perhaps a sign that she hadn't grown up as sane as she appeared.
...Just what were those guys thinking back when they pioneered Cultivation? 'Oh, those flowers certainly look pretty, and if the dragons eat those fruits, they're good enough for us' - were they insane? Since to build an Ego Barrier requires not having learned any other magics previously, they must have been mortals, so what in the world possessed them to do something like that? Or perhaps they didn't do it of their own free will at all?..The first three stages of Cultivation were commonly labeled the Stages of Self-Perfecting. Fortify the mind, refine the body, purify the soul. That was the mantra, the common refrain, but Kong Zang's path gave a more nuanced description. The Ego Barrier was necessary and crucial: by consuming certain flowers native to Elvish lands in conjunction with fruits integral to the diet of ancient dragons, the first Cultivators found that they could manifest their will into literal barriers - half physical, half metaphorical - around their material and mental selves. The establishment of an Ego Barrier disjoined one from the greater universe, allowing the isolated self to spontaneously catalyze the Energy of All and Nothingness which all separate realms manifested by necessity. Power in arguably its purest form.
Hmm, I thought the creation of a private Realm was something done in later stages of Cultivation, but apparently it's something that occurs right at the very start? By completely isolating oneself from the world, one tricks reality into thinking that one is a separate realm and thus gets the energy generation going? Because that's seemingly what happens to worlds - they automatically generate the Energy of All and Nothingness. Hey, would the same happen to a perfectly isolated pocket dimension created by a Diagramist? The art of Cultivation was not, at its core and despite its trappings, a proper art at all, not a formal system like the Diagram with systemic and derivable first principles. Cultivation was a path of precipitous self-modification hacked together through ruthless opportunism and relentless testing, designed to exploit and maximally leverage a loophole in the laws governing the universe.
And the Ego Barrier was the most foundational and critical element of that path. The Ego Barrier formed the border of one's nascent realm, the very limit by which it achieved definition and individualization. If a realm was not 'separate,' it could never generate the Energy of All and Nothingness of its own accord, merely extract and exhale the energy of a greater realm. Intermittent or porous separation was not disqualifying on face, but allowed only for interrupted periods of Energy formation.
Theoretically, it's possible to rely on external means to fortify the body for the sake of performing Organ Refinement (as long as those means don't dissipate when closed off from the outside world through an Ego Barrier), which is what I assume the Might spell to be doing when it is perfomed at a sufficiently advanced level. And without copious quantities of the Energy, one's realm - of mind, body, and spirit - could never survive the pressures exerted by the Organ Refining Stage, much less the deeper severing imposed by the formation of a Soul Chrysalis. A weak Ego Barrier meant even that one's stockpiled Energy could dissipate in clashes of the mighty, pressed out like water from a sponge.
So the first three stages set the foundation from which the following three build a new world. And Dominion... well, it's name suggests asserting supremacy over this Realm. I don't know how exactly this would happen and what would be required to succeed, but it's telling that Llewyn's Might helps here at the Further Beyond stage. Perhaps the Dominion stage requires elevating the self once more?Isolation - the Ego Barrier.
Transformation - Organ Refining, Soul Chrysalis.
Creation - Dao Cleaving, Reality Forming, Grand Solipsism.
And finally, Dominion - Titanic Ascension.
Kong Zang had thereby labeled the stages: an evolution of the self into a greater self, and then into a realm first sheltered from, then equal to, and finally greater and more puissant than the world around it. Whether it was Yong Shen's Primordium or Kong Zang's Endless Sky, the inner universe of a Titan was not merely a reactor of nigh-fathomless power, but also the uttermost expression of their self.
Hmm? This is a bit confusing. Do I take it to mean that the Ego Barrier loses (or changes) its isolating function at later stages of Cultivation? Perhaps it becomes less and less necessary to be completely separate after establishing the Soul Chrysalis and/or succeeding in creating a new world-self, or the ability to let some things through becomes increasingly important.Nameless had gathered that at some point the Ego Barrier became more unto an Ego Gradient, a semi-permeable sieve by which a realm could filter, with progressively increasing severity, its articles of ingress and egress. But that was far into the future, and for now the Ego Barrier stage was still the very bedrock of his Cultivation.
Sadly, it's far too likely that we and our allies won't be the only ones with access to this knowledge. Whether it's through recovering ancient knowledge or making a ridiculous new breakthrough, it's to be expected that the Heroine will acquire Beyond versions of cultivation stages at the very least.Fortunate, then, that Baenlixnaire had discovered a way for his apprentice to push past the mere 'Completion' that even exceptional Cultivators settled for. This was no surprise to Nameless; Cultivation was a road with ten thousand branching paths, the vast majority of which led to self-disfiguration and death. Orthodoxy was not just clean and efficient, but safe.
Heh. We tend to rag on the Heroine a lot for her advantages, but seeing it laid out like this, we're quite the cheater ourselves, aren't we? It might be completely impossible for mortals to acquire our capabilities without divine intervention. On the other hand, Rigorous practice of the Diagram taught mental acuity, and mastery of its Signs imparted self-discipline that bordered on the supernatural; such essential selfhood was what guaranteed its practitioners their success at lichdom. The very act of Sketching a viable Diagram caused a shift in one's mental self-perceptions; a facet of the brain opened that was as-yet unexplored. Harnessing a tactile form of energy many abstraction layers above that of the All and Nothingness, it was no surprise that the Diagram Arts were fundamentally incompatible with the formation of an Ego Barrier. But Nameless' mind was not so limited. Illuminated by the power of fourfold Celestial Orbs, he could - like opening a second eye to allow for binocular vision - not only see from two perspectives at once, but harmonize them into a greater whole.
First thought upon reading about those legendary metals: we definitely want to get ourselves some of these. Don't know how they'd stack up against a high-level Cultivator's brute force, but it will be fun to find out. Maybe we'll have to go looking for liches to find them?Cultivators used the elven Thriesis flower in conjunction with exhaustively-tested mental exercises to 'accrue' the stuff of will, eventually forming a coherent Ego Barrier. But with the perspective of the Diagram, he could perform a parallel and analogous procedure by which the stuff of will could be 'refined.' A weak Ego Barrier was like a thin wall of mud, a strong one like thick parapets of baked clay, and the very strongest were packed so densely and heavily that they resembled fortress-walls of mighty stone. But his was the legacy of the Diagram, and the Barrier around his mind would be as the orichalcum and shining mythril from which the Magi had raised their towers of old.
So we're finally starting on the road of exploring the full synergy promised by Thrice-Great. Don't know just how well our opposition will be able to anticipate the advancements we'd make on this path, but at least there's a lot of room for improvisation here.Neither wave nor spear nor thundering storm had ever found purchase against those faultless walls, and any assault leveled at his mind would crash against his Barrier to similar effect. But he would not reach such heights through the process of 'refinement' alone. That would yield bright steel, but not the metals of legend that would do proper justice to the Magi of the Diagram. No, he had to go further beyond, bend Artifice to this cause as well, weld all three arts together to create a truly peerless foundation...
Finding the necessary ingredients on the roadside... and that's just with Charmed Life, though we've probably utilized the Sign of Fate to some degree as well. I shudder to think what the Heroine would be capable of if she could manipulate her luck and destiny consciously.---
And so Nameless poured all the knowledge and craft and cunning imparted by his mentor into the creation of a Grand Diagram, a spell of the Ascendant Sign of Fate, a system cleaved into reality which would bring power, focus, and order to the capricious whimsy of Artifice. It was the prerogative of Yong to bridle the natural world in service of man, and Fate seemed happy to lend a helping hand. Fortune was on his side that day, as he found the materials he needed lying on the side of the road, and new insights burst like firecrackers through his mind. One day it would turn on him, but for now it provided its fulsome assistance, and he took full advantage. Through the logic of the Diagram, he would craft a lever by which to overturn the plans of the Divinities, and the pattern of the world.
Don't tell me we've gotten so used to the Spirit Cocaine we never want to go back to the inferior, 'safe' materials! Drug addiction is bad for your health, y'know? Except when you're an immortal lich with golden Azoth flowing through your veins, apparently. At the apex of Ego Barrier, but before he truly invested himself in the 'refining' process, he bled down his essence to create a phial of shimmering golden flakes suspended in a clear elixir. This he imbibed like any other Cultivation reagent; it would spread throughout his body and for ten years dramatically amplify the positive effects of other materials ingested. Not only did this accelerate his growth rate, it allowed him to profitably ingest otherwise-poisonous materials that normally posed more threat than benefit, even when the magnitude of that benefit was great.
This is a ridiculous amount of effort to perfect the Ego Barrier. I'm starting to doubt even the Heroine with all her luck would be capable of fielding something of this level in the foreseeable future. Then again, what do I know? Where we have to do the work ourselves, she might just find the right materials and legacies that would push her along. So vivified, he advanced through Ego Barrier for a second time at a prodigious pace, this time completing the refinement process (an exhausting two weeks during which Suizhen diligently forewent sleep to guard his body) before racing through Organ Refinement and into Soul Chrysalis. It was not until mid-Soul Chrysalis that Nameless at last attained his goal: essence enough that, amplified by his Forge Diagram, he felt comfortable crafting an Artifact to truly complete his Ego Barrier.
The product of his labor was a tattoo of shining gold, its form reminiscent of Imperial calligraphy, to be anchored irrevocably over his heart. It would bond with and sink into the skin at that point, residing at the core of the self and at its liminal edge, and refine bright steel into the shining mythril of yore. It was a product born of Artifice, rendered into the self to enhance his Cultivation, the first rune and core of a Grand Diagram that would encompass his body entire.
Hidden Synergy Unlocked!
Project: Mine Own Greatest Creation. Harmoniously combine the arts of Cultivation, Artifice, and Diagram to elevate your self into an entity of erudition and power unrivaled in all the world. Go Beyond the relevant Cultivation stage, craft an Artifact-runeword of the appropriate level to perfect it, and combine each stage in order to sketch a proper Diagram of the self.
- True Alchemist - Perfect, in order, the stages of Isolation (Ego Barrier) and Transformation (Organ Refining, Soul Chrysalis) to Go Beyond.
- Philosopher's Stone - Perfect, in order, the stages of Creation (Dao Cleaving, Reality Forming, Grand Solipsism) to Go Further Beyond. Dr. Apocalypse will begrudgingly respect and accept you.
- [Philosopher-King] - It is said that Hermes Trismegistus was a pagan sage of such insight that he foresaw the advent of the Lord. Attain and perfect the stage of Dominion, Titanic Ascension, to Go - Even Further Beyond. Power enough, and wisdom, to not only conquer an empire, but to reign beloved and forever.
The last line sours the excitement somewhat, but it's not that much of a disadvantage. We'd mostly be using superior materials when we cultivate anyway, so the Auorium will hardly be going to waste. Of course, things might have looked a bit different with the Sarcophagus, but it's a far lesser problem with Quickening.---
Artifacts Gained!
[Phial of Aurioum] - Magnifies dramatically the beneficial effects of self-modifying materials ingested. Persists in the body for ten years, after which it falls inert and is expelled. Limited span grants additional power, but its ability to draw out potential becomes relatively weaker the greater the material ingested.
5x Cultivation benefits from materials relevant to Ego Barrier, 4x for Organ Refining, 3x for Soul Chrysalis, 2x for other materials of Reality Forming level or below. An exceptional means to rapidly cultivate is one is able to strike above one's Stage.
Uses subjective time.
The heart rune? How cheesy. Still, whatever works. It's certainly very nice to have received an enhancement that not only helps us in battle but sets the groundwork for later development into something that can tilt the odds in our favor. It's more than I expected out of the option, that's for sure, and I'm now pretty grateful Archsmith won that vote.[Heart] Rune - An Artifact created to augment the character's Ego Barrier, but also the central seed of an Artifice array intended to harmoniously re-arrange the character's body and inner universe into a supreme Grand Diagram with unknown but titanic powers.
Strengthens the character's Absolute Ego Barrier, granting 'durability' equivalent to the Layered Absolute Barriers stage, though a single incomparably powerful barrier has both advantages and downsides. This allows the character to operate as if his Cultivation base were half a stage higher for all purposes except Stage-specific effects.
Additionally, the character's Ego Barrier gains a fierceness and ductility that makes him terrifying in battle; the sheer concentration of his power sufficient to rend and repel the attacks of Cultivators many times more powerful than he.
- Grants +.75 stages to combat power so long as effective level does not exceed that of Reality Forming.
- Grants +.5 stages if instead it does not exceed that of Grand Solipsism.
- Grants +.25 stages to characters of Titan-equivalent or greater power.
The arguments for this one have been hashed over already, I'd say. I'm in favor of giving her the blade, but that's because I want her to do more than be our arm candy in our future endeavors. it would be pretty sucky having to chuck her into the Vault whenever the going gets tough.---
Suizhen is understandably a bit jealous of (and intimidated by - what is her talent worth, against the unleashed might of the Thrice-Great?) your newly-attained magnificence and throws herself into her training with renewed fervor. Perhaps you should forge an Artifact to assist her?
[ ] A Splendid Blade - Commit to crafting a world-beating weapon worthy of a world-shaking genius. Uses a full Cultivation stage from Peak Soul Chrysalis down to Low Soul Chrysalis. You don't enjoy hitting people with swords and the Artifact will be more powerful if you key it to her specifically (or at least to the position of 'your bodyguard'), so you'll do that. In a world such as this, doing things by half-measures is a poor idea.
[Suizhen Loyalty++, commits you to forging this Artifact when next it would be reasonable and your Cultivation is at the correct level. Will make her considerably more powerful than a Lackey of her stature ought to be. Unless you take Court of Vane, you will not finish this Artifact before combats occur.]
[ ] Not Necessary - She seems to be improving at a rapid pace and is quite loyal. An Artifact is not necessary. You cannot afford to slow down your own geometric growth curve by forging Artifacts impulsively... which path is actually going to make your party relevant against the likes of Kong Zang?
[No effect on Suizhen Loyalty]
Sadly, my least favorite option. Not because the choice itself is too bad, but we've chosen the build that can afford to adventure aggressively, and immediately heading for the parties after that sounds a bit boring. We can always go strut our stuff later, after we've scratched the adventuring itch.Unfortunately, your several weeks' delay in order to attain Absolute Ego Barrier caused you to miss Xiaoling while she was in Imperial Center; she has gone ahead to Southern Vane without you, but will still condescend to meet you there. Where shall you tell her to meet you?
[ ] Court of Vane - The Ruby Court of House Vanethiel is legendary for its decadence, frivolity, and socialite scene. There are few polite venues more dangerous in the medium-term. Baenlixnaire held a truly special contempt for the traitorous get of Banethiel's sister House; you are unlikely to make friends here. Profitable marks, on the other hand...
*Treasures Numbers: Low, Difficulty of Acquisition: Medium. Consequences of Acquisition: Likely High. Treasure Quality: Good.
*[Xiaoling Loyalty+], her disposition is improved by the parties
*Spoiled is not a disadvantage here, in fact it helps you fit in. In addition to treasures, you will make money from scams, replenishing your fortune.
*High chance to hear of Priceless Treasures or new Secret Dungeons in the area, if they are currently present / open
*Remote but not nonexistant chance of finding the Heroine, if she is currently in Southern Vane!
Ah, the liches we've talked so much about when discussing Truthseeker. Of course, we'd have to find them first, but we might receive unexpected help from Fate if we turn out to be their Doom. It also immediately teaches us a spell, of which there can never be enough (I suspect it will be Vault rather than Potentation), and gives us access to lots of cultivation materials for our advancement.
[ ] South-East Border Zone - Where the Overgrowth of Kong meets the ancient dungeons of ancestral Vane, monster-overrun wilderness has fused with unnatural crypts to form an eldritch horrorscape of barely-exploited goods.
*Treasure Numbers: Very High, Difficulty: Medium, Consequences: Low-ish, Quality: Inconsistent
*Most of the Cultivation materials here are highly potent, but so poisonous that their downsides outweigh the Cultivation gains. Not so for you, and a few Forbidden Cultivators of unknown stripe...
*Relatively unpopulated area
*Additional traveling time reduces time available, but allows Nameless to learn (and Beyond) one Major spell (I will choose).
*Lich stronghold rumored in area
*Limited ability to screw over House Vane
*Opportunity to fight against the beasts of Kong appeals to Suizhen [Suizhen Loyalty+]
Ah, that wacky Vane. I'd almost say it's nice of him to leave his legacy for all to take a gander at, but the 'gleefully sadistic' but puts things into perspective. Maybe it's just me, but my 'plot relevant' warning signs start going off when reading this option. Youngsters from all over Southern Vane will be visiting the place, plus we've heard that the Heroine might be in Southern Vane herself... I doubt she'll be in the Zone, but we might find a thread leading to her. Someone must know her, after all, a genius of her caliber wouldn't remain completely obscure.[ ] Atrius Vane Legacy Exclusion Zone - The first Lord Vane of the Labyrinth Empire was an enthusiastic admirer of Cultivator culture. Having attained the peak of Grand Solipsism before he tragically died, he has left a number of exceptionally potent Legacies - not to his heirs, but open to all and sundry, should they be capable and daring enough to challenge his bizarre and gleefully sadistic Legacy Zones. This is the third such Zone to open since his death, and allows passage to those of the Soul Chrysalis level and below. Once it opens, competition will flock to this zone in order to plunder its Priceless Treasures.
*Treasure Numbers: Very Low, Difficulty: Very High, Consequences: High (Aggressive Competition), Quality: Priceless
*The perfect opportunity to defile Atrius Vane's legacy, literally and metaphorically [Oath of Vengeance fulfilled against Vane, gain 1 Beyond Point]. Must succeed to claim BP.
*Deny his heirs the chance to acquire good fortune
*Nameless prefers to go to this area.
*Gain effect [Fuck You, I'm the Boss], paradoxically increasing loyalty of both Suizhen and Xiaoling
*While you are powerful enough to bully all but the mightiest of your competitors, there are a few who may be able to damage your Cultivation base with Forbidden Techniques
*You are not powerful enough to be completely impervious to Vane's ancient guardians and outrageous traps
*High chance of your Lackeys being imperiled and/or dying if you do not constantly babysit them
If we can perfect it by that time, sure.If we manage to get two BP before the next update, I wonder if it's worth Going Beyond Organ Refining.
Something to consider is that despite Kong being the first on the path, using Cultivating that's perfectly tuned to his own growth, and trail blazing the most dangerous but fruitful path... Grandpa is both the first Titan and maybe strongest, possibly losing out only to the Emperor. Yong Clan arts OP even taking the non-attuned Orthodox route.A self-adjusting cultivation method that is uniquely suited to each practitioner - the more I hear about it, the more I like the idea, the terrible dangers of taking the wrong road notwithstanding. One can't help but admire Kong Zang's genius for blazing such a path forward if nothing else. Still, he is only one of the Titans, so the Arts of others must have something going for them as well, even if they wouldn't be as suited to Nameless' current personality and abilities.
