[X] Vengeance
Remember, Artifice is only half of the Elves' Binary Magic, and the less used half at that. That may change for Blood Elves, since now they can recover the power spent on it the same way Thrice Great let us Cultivate it back up, but most Elves focus on Naturalism.Mercy maims Nameless by destroying 1/3rd of his Thrice Great nature and removes the greatest strength of the elves.
After rendering them helpless, seek to inflict upon them suffering equal to that which they inflicted upon the peoples of the world and their Servants, the failed Overlords of past Ages.
It's fun to see how option names get referenced and recycled periodically. This was the name of the empowered Remittance in A Simple Transaction; now, it's a literal description of the action we're undertaking.
We promised to check, after we'd won. Perhaps that could be added to the list of scenes for the epilogue. Ordinarily it might be better to just attend to that offscreen in the future, but we looked to him for inspiration at the eleventh hour, and reuniting him with Baenlixnaire could be nice.He remembered the lich Tyranshal, whose bottomless opprobrium for the nature of men had driven it to ultimate despair. Was it happy, Nameless wondered, alone in the Out, beyond the reach of even the Fates, blind deaf and dumb, a grim silent speck of awareness in the vast unfeeling dark?
It's unclear how much of Tyranshal's decision was based on the Diagram having fallen and Doom closing in. He was mired in despair over human nature, and possibly wracked by the costs of his Cerebration. Not necessarily an ideal starting point from which to makeThat was the fate it had chosen and consigned itself to, be it penance or reward, but though Tyranshal was gone its legacy was far from departed. Nameless would not be where he was without all that the lich had taught him. Nonetheless, its ideas on their own would never have sufficed. It was important to absorb a lesson, more important still to go beyond.
That was a good quote, so seeing it reappear is a welcome surprise. Truth leads to Might, just as knowledge leads to power... and power, of course, leads to victory."We thought the whole world would yield to Reason," had said the lich, "but Reason does not exist to make things yield."
"To might alone, is given the power to decide who shall rule."And that was true. Reason did not exist to make things yield. That was the purview of Might.
Given that Nameless is living in a world of cardboard at this point, restraint's required. But might without reason was clumsy at best, calamitous at worst. When one had as much power as the Thrice-Great, finesse and precision mattered even more than the particulars of strength.
It's good that Nameless has his priorities straight. It was not enough to win. From his current august perch, there were as many roads to victory as Paths in the Dao. Victory without compromise was his goal: the Fates defeated, Zang Kong neutralized, the peoples of the world reasonably well-off and safe, and most importantly - his own responsibilities nonexistent. It would hardly be called winning if he was forced to bestir himself for administrative minutiae afterwards.
He lacks the temperament for tyranny, honestly. He had told Tyranshal that he would prove the Great Sage wrong. That Nameless would prevail in the game of the Fates; that he would be no unaccountable tyrant if he won, that the peoples of the world would be happy for more than the faltering span that suited the Fates' caprice.
Not an Age, but a world without ages, where the works of elves and men are allowed to flourish without fearing the hand of Fate sweeping it all away.He would even prove that Tyranshal's work on the Sign of Blood was valuable; nay, necessary, a foundational component of the (hopefully) golden age to come!
The Ascendant Signs have interesting implications for the metaphysics of the setting. Blood is distinct from and more important than Flesh - a strange line to draw - but beneath Essence. And so, the vial before him. A crimson elixir studded with flecks of essence that shined like the stars on a cloudless night. There was power in blood, power beyond the capacity of mere flesh to contain, for blood was the conduit between the material and the essential, the soul's reflection upon the real.
Man, I could spend all day reading about crazy lich experiments. It's neat that this isn't unprecedented, at least in theory.Liches of the past had experimented with distillation of the blood, concentrating the heart's entire supply into a single droplet and regenerating with that droplet as the source, but the corpus could not contain reified essence at such concentration, dispersing into ashes under the strain. Even the Diagram of Death that instantiated one's Lichdom could be imperiled by such reckless folly, if its material of inscription was insufficiently formidable.
Of the Truespells we were offered, Prodigious Might is honestly the coolest. The ability to survive destruction of our physical body as a wraith of light and fire is also valuable when subjecting ourselves to powerups that test the limits of our endurance. The mastered Ring of Truth being indestructible, at least in our neighborhood of conceptual potency, is convenient too.But Nameless had even less use for his physical organs than a conventional lich, and his Lichdom was manifest upon the Ring of Truth itself. He'd cast the True form of Prodigious Might and his body was imperishable fire, the blue-upon-blue of the sea before a storm.
Distillation of Blood to the point that it can support one's Essence, and then casting that form into Flesh. Essence is nebulous and blood liquid; no wonder our vampiric offspring have ridiculous powers of shapeshifting. But as interesting as this is, I can't help imagining the alternate universe where we're meditating on Baenlixnaire's teachings to bring forth the Ring. With such preparations, concerted distillation of the blood was possible. Applied recursively through abuse of the Nebula Battlesuit, this process allowed him to reach the long-hypothesized 'island of stability', whereby one's blood was mighty enough to fuse the Essential with the material, such that the blood alone could manifest one's Essential self within the realm of matter, assuming the form of flesh, organ, bone, and nerve as needed or desired.
This was a body comprised of pure essence, malleable with a thought into any shape one could conceive of one's self, limitlessly vital beyond the remit of mere reason, and naturally proficient at shaping the world's essence through the radiance of its own.
An unsavory outcome, eh? Like some... world of darkness? The more likely outcome is no world at all, though, if that strength's wielded imprudently. We still need an answer for the world's frailty, which sounds like a problem for Beyond Points. Conveniently, we can acquire more of them here.By seeding his blood into the veins of another, he could reinforce their physical and spiritual nature, gifting them a shadow of his own power. Strength enough for an ordinary mortal to sunder the physical universe with a single blow, or to elevate Elven master-workers to beyond the wildest dreams of Artifice. They, in turn, could spread this blessing to their own followers, though such progeny would be diminished one step further, each generation successively weaker as the line of blood descended.
In truth, such layered diminishment might eventually result in an unsavory outcome, given arbitrary generations of descent, but he had no intention of spreading his gift so widely when it contained such potential for destruction.
Zang is immune to the 'for fuck's sake' defense. Even now, we're still looking at an uphill battle. But the Endless Sky stands alone, and Nameless elected to share his power rather than wield it to bludgeon the world into a shape of his choosing.Of course, there were those companions whose efforts were critical to the success of today. Even with the vehicle of the Thrice-Great, missing a single multiplicative contribution would see him still far from the power to reliably challenge Zang Kong.
We never did meet Xiaoling's mother. She's been offscreen a while, but it's true that her information led us to Tyranshal, and Suizhen's been the best bodyguard anyone could ask for.Without Xiaoling he may never have found Tyranshal before doom claimed the lich, and Suizhen's assistance went without saying...
The glimpses we've gotten of the Ming are fun. They run their Great Clan as a corporation; given the typical ethics or lack thereof in Xianxia, this may actually be better.Ming Xiaoling strode into the board room of her Clan, clad in a diaphanous gown of elven make, silk exquisite beyond dreaming, white and gold as to make the stars and streams and dawn pale before its magnificence.
Man, this is worse than Nameless oneshotting Taishan! Seems we're destined to have all visits to their boardroom end in displays of power."Xiaoling, what is the meaning of this-" Her father began, but he was stilled, and the Board fell to their knees, heads pressed into the stone of the floor before the merest emanation of her power.
I do wonder what it would look like if Xiaoling donned the Battlesuit; perhaps one of those candle flames would flare into an inferno. Unfortunately, it's way less flattering than an elven dress! Taishan must be rolling in the grave he doesn't have, on account of having been obliterated utterly. This was power beyond accounting, beyond belief, power that beggared mere Titanhood as the Trade Throne did its most wretched of debtors. Power enough to snuff out all the stars in the sky with the slightest exhalation, power that laughed at the very idea of quantification. Before such power even the furthermost reaches of their Dao were nothing, candle-flames held motionless within an ocean of might.
Xiaoling's heritage got her childhood friends killed, causing her to close herself off from the world, so sweeping into the room effectively announcing it loud and clear is a big step for her. Her friends and Suizhen's family both ought to get fast-tracked for resurrection, along with the likes of Thriesiel and the artificers."Quiet, Papa. There are greater considerations at play." she said, not unkindly, in mirror of the words he'd spoken when silencing the companions of her youth.
Words like 'coup' and 'highway robbery' are so graceless. Just call it a succession! She brushed him aside, and settled onto the Trade Throne, crossing her legs.
Thinking for a moment, Xiaoling tapped a slipper imperiously against the Throne's side. "I shall succeed my father as Matriarch of the Trade Throne of Ming. No objections? Good. Empty the coffers and the Clan Reserves and send them to the Isle of the West. My friends have need of our funds."
On the Isle of the Elves and among our companions, it's sometimes easy to forget this is a Xianxia setting. Then you see the way power trounces all other concerns, the reflexive groveling before the strong common in the Age of Might, and clarity returns. Would the Ring really have been so bad? Or would it have just revealed a truth that already exists? They hurried to comply; money was one matter, strength quite another. The one was only an imperfect proxy for the other, fungible and useful for administration or the buying of luxuries, a frivolity in the face of true might.
I wonder what Liefang will think of all this. Despair over plans overturned, maybe? Reluctant, grudging pride? Jinyue's a Pawn, so he'll have a firsthand account. On second thought that's probably how we got introduced to Xiaoling in the first place..."How is this possible?" Ming Jinyue croaked, terror and pride warring across his visage.
It's amusing that despite not doing much of anything for the past ten updates, Xiaoling still gets catapulted to ultimate power dwarfing the likes of Yong Shen. Nameless needs to up his spoiled brat game!"Oh, Papa," Xiaoling raised a disappointed eyebrow. "Isn't it obvious? Like you always said: it's not what you know, it's who."
At these speeds, anywhere in the world is just a step away.Kong Suizhen stepped past the north-western border of Kong, and for a moment her power flared.
...if I'm reading this right they mistook Suizhen for Zang on account of her sheer power. The Elder Council of Kong, not unused to the tenuously-bridled might of their Patriarch, rushed to attend her.
"Hello," she said politely.
They bowed in unison. "Juniors greet the esteemed Great One!"
In Xianxia, declarations about a dead family coupled with overwhelming might typically do not end well for the person on the other end of the conversation. She tilted her head in mild confusion. "It's just me, Suizhen. The Patriarch slew my family a few years ago. Elder Wu, do you not remember?"
The panicked elders conversed hurriedly for a moment before one of their number came forward, bowing deeply.
My earlier comments about the Ring stand. Truth leads to Might, and Might reveals the Truth."This one apologizes for his grievous lapse in courtesy! Young Suizhen, you have changed so much in a few short years and grown into a magnificent beauty and peerless swordswoman: we can scarce believe our eyes!"
Behold, the future Empress of Cultivators. At least the world won't want for spaghetti. Also, this would be a dire infosec breach if infosec was at all relevant in the face of our current strength."Oh, t-that's alright," Suizhen said, somewhat embarrassed. "It's mostly Sir's artifact and blood donation."
C'mon, guys, you have semi-regular exposure to Zang Kong! You should be better at this. We need Jiarong to give them lessons on proper groveling."Er, yes... of course! Forgive our dire lack of perspicacity, unsuited to witnessing such exalted mysteries!"
The Battlesuit's wearer is as impossible to deny as the Truth itself."Sir would probably find this hilarious," she sighed. With an effort of will the Battlesuit's helm snapped into position, her visage replaced by an unblinking blue expanse.
Well, this is going to be cool."Step aside, please. I will now evacuate all who still reside within the Overgrowth, and destroy it, except those parts connected directly to Zang Kong's Chrysalis." She held her blade aloft and turned it to the side, edge facing Kong territory.
It's fitting that the first truly altruistic application of the power we've spent so much effort and so many build votes accumulating would be by Suizhen. I can see the appeal of Rain, in this moment, and a world where her aptitude for rule is equal to her skill in combat. But we have forever, so perhaps she'll get there anyway. There was light, the entire horizon glinting blue like steel flashing in the midday sun, and then the line dividing Earth and Sky slid towards them as if pulled, splitting the Overgrowth as utterly as up from down, left from right.
What greeted them afterwards was greenery, winding brooks and gentle streams, mountain crags shrouded by fog, as the East had been before the brand of Kong was applied. The Sky that had been strung and wound through the land now was cut free, its vastness returned to the heavens where it belonged.
And now it begins.Suizhen smiled contentedly, patting the full rucksack at her side, and departed for the Isle.
Final preparations were underway.
All we're missing is Elrond, though Amouthanos and Mourndiel combined fulfill his role. The council was arrayed around a table of white stone in a circular antechamber whose ceiling was open to the sky. Golden shafts of sunlight arrowed through the surrounding arbor, dappling them in soft warmth.
They've already rescinded the Fated Overlord, so they're not blind to our threat, but best not to give them any room to twist outcomes. Unbreakable loyalty's useful that way, and also incredibly ripe for abuse in a civilization not governed by Elven morals. Looking at you, Liefang.Assembled around him were Aurelia, Xiaoling, Suizhen, Amouthanos, and a number of master artificers vetted by the Praxis Council, sworn to Aurelia personally with oaths of undying fealty. Their enemies were the Fates; the circle of trust limited to the absolute minimum.
Amouthanos has Nameless pegged. Perhaps not surprisingly, lots of the survivors from previous Ages despair of ever overturning the cycle."It has come to this," Amouthanos said wearily, the eye-jewel of his crown glistening wetly, idly scanning his interlocutors. "I will admit, Nameless One, that there were hours where I despaired of ever overcoming the Seasons' ceaseless escalation. It is no coincidental irony that they will be unmade by a master of the same."
The contrast between diminished and undiminished elves is sharp, but it's a nice way of adapting the weariness from the passing ages of Arda to this world. I wonder what the Forge-Lord will be like when restored to perfect form? Does he even want that, when it would drastically alter his personality?Resting her head on Nameless' shoulder, Aurelia raised one hand pertly. "I, on the other hand, never doubted you for a moment, darling!"
Valid point, and probably good to probe for treachery before setting off. Or maybe this is just an innocuous question, who knows?"Of course not," Nameless rejoined. "You're smarter than him, and know me better as well! But, Elf-lord, are you really okay with this? Despite everything your civilization has survived the passing of the Ages. The Fates seem to have a soft spot for you, yet you engineer their downfall?"
Huh, does vampiric essence manipulation augment Aurelia's Naturalism? Majesty's description does say it 'compounds essence upon essence', so perhaps that's synergistic with distillation."Perhaps," Amouthanos replied. "Yet with every passing Age our numbers grow thinner, the moral compromises of the Council more contemptible. You were their Fated Overlord for an eyeblink; favorite or not, we were their plaything for eons. I am tired of staying one step ahead of their machinations. But you misunderstand. We are tied irrevocably to you now. Just as Majesty's Ringbearer bound you to us, equally she binds us to you. None could gainsay her even before her command of Naturalism had reached today's heights. No. Our ship of state is strapped to the prow of your might, for better or for worse."
Amouthanos continues to take no prisoners in verbal exchanges."Me?" Nameless laughed. "I'm just the delivery guy."
He pointed at Suizhen. "The fighter you're looking for is over there."
"Then I shall hope that a weakling such as you can fend off Zang Kong, should he wake while your retainer is in Heaven."
The blood elf artifice exploit is great, honestly. Nameless can't risk triggering Awakening, but this validates the decision to go with Distillation.Nameless shrugged. "If you've got the good stuff."
One by one the blood-empowered artificers presented their works, a set of jewels and a brace to set them in, a wireframe constellation that traveled the length of his left arm to his shoulder. One by one they extinguished their lives, sacrificing the last of their enormous reserves of essence to complete the armament with which the Isle of the Elves would send the Nameless One into battle.
Infinity Gauntlet aside, this is interesting. Four Jewels, four Signs, four Seasons. Conquest is the Bow, Prowess is the Sword, Insight is the Scales, and Harvest is obviously the Scythe. The correspondences to the Seasons are a little less straightforward. The Scythe might be Autumn or Winter, though I'm inclined to think the latter has the Scales, for the Famine-associations; Numair did say her Ages were 'sparse' in comparison. That leaves Summer with the Sword, and the Bow for Spring? This does make the comment that the Bow is 'ineffective against our true nemesis' retroactively hilarious, though. I wonder if there were any interactions with the Fates gated behind specific Signs? If he won, he would revive them with the Necromancer's power. If he lost, their lives were forfeit anyway. Knowing it was meaningless, still he waited a moment in honor of their sacrifice. The panoply of jewels twined into and around his arm, gilded junctures sliding closed around arteries and veins, a tracery of infinite runes spiraling down its length. The Primary Jewels slotted in, one atop each knuckle. Conquest, Prowess, Insight, Harvest. As he clenched his fingers they glowed like a fistful of suns.
Okay, I'll admit to laughing at that one.It was meagre power in the grand scheme of things, enough perhaps to elevate him by a quarter of a Cultivation Stage, though this Artifact alone could subjugate the entire Labyrinth Empire (save Eastern Kong) without so much as the snap of a finger.
Between Xiaoling and the Extrusion, we're going to be paying that this off for a while. Tell me we at least extracted a distillation fee!He summoned the scepter that was his Extrusion, recalling the lich from its training grounds. The fruit of three weeks' diligence, purchased at exorbitant cost, flowed into his mind, power enough to add another fifth of a Stage. By his reckoning, he was about as powerful as Zang Kong, perhaps stronger by a sliver. It would have to be enough.
Suizhen adapting to Nameless and growing as a person enough to banter has been nice.He met Suizhen's eyes from across the table.
"Ready to finally do your job, bodyguard?"
"Sir," she answered, "I must protest. Not only is Sir sending me away from his person, I am to assassinate his enemies proactively! This is the opposite of a bodyguard's role!"
Don't do it, Suizhen. You should hold out for the pay bump that comes with being Empress!"You're right," he said. "Shall I fire you then, and re-hire you as a assassin?"
"Does this new job come with debt forgiveness?"
She did empty the Trade Throne's coffers, which I imagine would hurt imperial stability if that weren't about to become a non-issue."You know he can't afford that right now," Xiaoling pointed out. "Remember how much money he owes me!"
The sickeningly saccharine banter in public makes me feel for him. They're like newlyweds, but worse, because of the permanent lover's oath. And we still don't know what her Dao is!"Darling, do you need a sugar mommy?" Aurelia whispered conspiratorially. "Don't worry, I can help!"
"Dao of being my sugar mommy..." Nameless muttered.
"Charming as this all is," Amouthanos said, "Are we actually going to battle the Seasons today?"
Somebody has to keep this circus pointed in the right direction. My sympathy for Amouthanos grows with every line of dialogue."You're no fun at all..." Nameless complained.
"So I've been told. Shall we begin, then? There is the matter of the fate of the world..."
What's the point of having a knockoff Infinity Gauntlet if you can't tell people to talk to the hand? The (second) best reason to take Vengeance is that we can unleash an arsenal of hand-related puns."More like the Fates of the world, am I right?" Nameless shot him a finger-gun. The Constellation's Jewels hummed menacingly.
Now I see, being Empress isn't a salaried position, it's the reward itself! Being paid in authority, eh? The ultimate scam, to offload all responsibility and call it a reward! He cleared his throat. "Okay Suizhen, I'm promoting you to bodyguard / assassin. The details of your compensation will be worked out after you come back. This is a big responsibility, but I know that you're ready for it."
Suizhen never does, when it comes to skill in battle. A part of me mourns for the version of the scene where she takes up Rain to shatter heaven, but this was good too.
I wonder what circumstances triggered a portal previously, if it's happened at all since the titanomachy that saw the Fates ascendant. This window into the Celestial Realm is interesting. Previously it was a blank spot in the imagination, but now we can see Servants moving about, unaware of their imminent freedom. Speaking of epilogue scenes, Elvegekere could be interesting, especially if negotiations with Zang are successful. If it was him doing the opening narration, in a sense he was our first lich (?) mentor."Good. And don't forget to pick up any Celestial Orbs you see." He closed his fist, a circular rift opening above of the center of the table, Heavens and earth connected for the first time in Ages. Through the portal they saw pillars of empyrean blue, graven with archaic runes. Shadowy figures flitted through the flame-lit hall.
Plucking Heaven's stars from the sky and forging them into our Constellation to burn there forever would be a fitting conclusion to all this. Suizhen paraphrasing Zang is uplifting, though, a statement of confidence in her power that would have been unthinkable for the orphaned girl we met on the road over an OOC year ago. This is... actually it. Regardless of what we choose, it's all coming to a close.Suizhen nodded, tightening the grip on her blade. "Don't worry, Sir. The stars in Heaven may be our enemy, and the sky itself as well, but the sword held above them is greater still."
You appear to have an issue with quoting here. Right after "Of all the truespells offered, Prodigious Might is honestly the coolest."1731 words. It's fun to see how option names get referenced and recycled periodically. And if we continue to flip him back and forth for our own amusement, how long until he just gets fed up with our shit? But then if you did turn him back into a lich, he'd prefer that once more.
With the recent boosts and Rihaku's clarification that a bad end is unlikely, I don't think turning the tables is going to happen at this point. None of the options comment on whether pursuing them is likely alter our odds of victory, for instance.mostly because the Fates have experience killing of those stronger than them.
[X] Vengeance
Changing my vote on account of realizing how thematically appropriate it is. Not the gothic horror stuff, but rather the concept that a man defined by a overwhelming conflict might cling to that ideal even when there's no longer any use for it. Nameless is a genius, a hero, and a conqueror. But he is these things because he is a man, and men do not abandon their ideals for convenience.
>Claims that other people don't understand torture
>Thinks that rape is pinnacle for someone like Baen
Sweet, sweet summer child. Lich will spend decades having Fates build a values system just to tear it down in most cruel way. He will give them hope of salvation just to snatch them as they are about to escape. He will remove any limit on their ability to feel pain and have them reach realms of suffering never felt by a sentient being.
He will break them into soulless husks, then break them beyond that again and again, untill their whole existence is defined by suffering; but they would not forget love and happiness for such things would be allowed to them just so they never lose sights on sheer depths of their torment.
Imagine being Summer - after centuries of endless suffering you are saved by elves. You decide to repent, finding love with a commoner and having children with them. After long and fulfilled life she is on her deathbed surrounded by her children and their children too - just for all of that to vanish in puff of smoke, her and phantoms of her children going back to unlimited torture.
Then Baen stops fucking around and starts doing shit my mortal mind can't even.
But sure, rape is bad mkay![]()
I'm not even mad at the fates. They made an interesting world to play in. They gave Nameless a great life with vast powers and good friends...the way things have gone it feels like he barely struggled. Why would he hate them?
This is Xianxia. You take your enemies and turn them into powerups, even (or even especially) when it's unnecessary.
As an option, Mercy is decidedly lacking. We - and presumably the entire world - lose the ability to craft Artifacts, which cripples our Elven allies and renders Nameless merely Twice-Great. As a sacrifice for victory, that would be acceptable. But it's one thing to win no matter the cost, and quite another to inflate it artificially. We also lose the Fate Sign, taking a chunk out of the Diagram, and gain no Beyond Points. One of the 'benefits' of this travesty is that Baenlixnaire will be less disappointed in us, if we just betray our mentor and feed him a pack of lies about how we couldn't do better. And all this, so we can grant mercy to beings that deserve none. It's a thematic and ideological one-eighty, the least satisfying form of victory.
Justice has all the trappings of fairness and balance that the Fates so prided themselves on maintaining. We turn them into Servants, get to design the next Age, and so on and so forth. But it reeks of taking up their mantle, doing as they did. They're still alive and coherent. The wheel hasn't broken, it's just turned once more, placing them at the bottom. It's the middle of the road, an option that lacks conviction, a shrug and half-hearted nod in the direction of the goal that's been driving us. We don't shatter heaven, just take up residence in it.
Vengeance is cruel. I won't deny that, though it's a cruelty that'll be abstract and off-screen. But that is part of the story we've been telling, of a boy reborn into a world endlessly eroded, charged with protecting the present and avenging the past. We made a promise, and the nature of promises is that they remain immune to changing to circumstances. Does Nameless require the sanctification of a binding Artifact to keep the letter and spirit of his word? Are we, as questers, that fickle? This is the end. Now, more than ever, we should stay true to the roots of Nameless' character. Vengeance is not the best, most moral option. But it is the option that's truest to the protagonist we've played, and we're Truth's Ringbearer.
This is Xianxia. You take your enemies and turn them into powerups, even (or even especially) when it's unnecessary.
Presumably Rihaku wouldn't mention something as a downside if we had the ability to correct it with little difficulty. Whatever system is in place will be difficult to replace with the same quality, especially without questers to inject BP steroids into Nameless.Practically speaking? There's nothing stopping Nameless from killing the Fates, and then building a new one in their place, because it doesn't make sense if they're a cosmic force that they're also the only one that's sapient and can play silly buggers with demanding whatever price they want for things, or can say "Yeah you can learn this magic if you accept a Doom to go with it", and so forth.
Presumably Rihaku wouldn't mention something as a downside if we had the ability to correct it with little difficulty. Whatever system is in place will be difficult to replace with the same quality, especially without questers to inject BP steroids into Nameless.
BP which is notably absent with Mercy since we're going against the path of just punishment or horrible overkill. If you have such faith in questers generating BP when we just exhausted our supply to become Cain then you're welcome to do so. But any argument relying on a resource we lack is pretty flawed.Well, yes, that's what the BP is for.
Altering the final worldstate to achieve a more perfect victory.
I can absolutely see a post-Mercy outcome being "Build a new Fate" with its power and friendlyness determined by how much we can pour into it.
And TBH, Mercy's only problem is "Fate Sign shuts down and Artifice--which was tied to it--stops". Everything else about it is pretty great?
