Emma Barnes, Princess (Worm/Princess the Hopeful Quest)

Right now, we don't have any experience with ranged weapons, but fortunately transformed ability dots are dirty cheap at 1 XP a piece. So we only need 6 XP to become a profesional sniper while transformed. And a bit more to buy charm upgrades to damage.
Note that the starting levinbolt has to be reloaded every 3 shots, which takes a wisp and a turn.

Well her invocations are Tempesta and Aria with Aria dominant so she should get charms for kicking ass and inspiring people.

So how about these for combat.

Kensai(melee weapon and allows you to apply invocations to melee combat which for tempest is free)
Lightning Charge ( getting into melee combat safely)
Barrier Jacket (defense)

I went with Kensai over Levinbolt because Kensai doesn't cost wisps to use giving us a permanent power boost when transformed Kensai gives us the weapon for free but requires a wisp to reload for every 3 shots which considering the small wisp pools and difficulty getting more means we would empty our supply on just ammo fairly quickly.

For the remaining charms I think Twenty Faces and Phantom. Twenty faces isn't as good as most people think it is without upgrades but it still lets us appear normal until we start using other powers. Phantom gives illusions which are very flexible.

Twenty Faces
Phantom

That also makes sense i guess. We might need a bit of exp to get it up to par, but on the other hand our kensai would only be marginally better than just a plain pair of knuckle dusters right now.
EDIT-stupid auto-emoticons
Both Levinbolt and Kensai do the same initial damage and have roughly the same upgrade options. Levinbolt however requires we spend a wisp to get only 3 shots worth of ammo. We only get 10 wisps in our pool and our regen for wisps is only 1 per scene where we meet the right qualifications. We can't afford to waste them.

The best part of both charms is they allow you to apply invocations to either accuracy or damage which is a big power boost especially as we raise our invocations. Normally you can only apply them to charm activation rolls.

celestial dance:
barrier jacket:
twenty faces:

I like them then again there's a lot I like, if we're combat focused i'd like read the wind for an awareness charm

other options would be watchful Mind could help us find people to save for example Dinah, and Small Providence is useful on the days we relax. good for both relaxing Shopping, and finding special gifts for others.

I didn't want to be to focused on combat but they weren't together because I didn't think dance and jacket stacked.

If we're going to drop anything for lightning charge, it should be barrier jacket. Celestial dance connects to aria instead of tempesta, gives us benefits for athletic rolls in addition to it's defense boost, and is required for learning flight.
Twenty Faces
Phantom
Phantom is a 2-dot.

Soooooo...

Imma stop lurking and try to suggest a plan of action. Please let me exactly how much an idiotic n00b I'm being here.

My original plan was to combine Flash Step with Levinbolt and become Little Miss Militia, the wondrous waif with a silver AK-47! Behold, as she disappears in a cloud of stardust whenever enemies close for melee!

Unfortunately, we don't have any points of Firearms, so I went for Plan B: use Kensai + Flash Step + Lightning charge so that we can dash up, smack people, Flash Step into cover when they retaliate, then Lightning Charge them all over again next round, having preferably chosen a position that puts a punchable baddie between us & his gun-toting friend(s).

But we don't have Weaponry, either, so now let's try Plan C.

- Celestial Dance •

- Empty Hands: Grasping ••

- Flash Step •

- Lightning Charge •

This build is entirely predicated on being able to get in our opponent's face from the word "go" and then keep hammering away at them: Lightning Charge lets us bum-rush our target from over 50 feet away while still keeping our Defense against anyone taking pot shots, and we get to roll at least 5 dice for our Brawl attacks* once we arrive, which is about as good a combat pool as we can put together right now. As soon as the guy we just hit retaliates, we can use Flash Step (just 3 dice, but we only need one success) to immediately teleport to any point up to 27 feet away, more than enough to get us behind some sort of cover (and also making it hard for the enemy to gang up on us). Rinse and repeat. Meanwhile, we spam Celestial Dance to buff our Defense.

So yeah, assuming there aren't too many glaring flaws here, this should keep alive long enough to start earning XP, at which point we can start buying more utilitarian Charms. We're definitely a glass cannon type, but then again, we're a 12-year-old girl, so the only we're going to tank hits is by buying up Barrier Jacket, which seems like a bad idea this early in the game.

Opinions?

* Up to 7 if we invoke Aria, which is free whenever we're running (or charging, I presume), trying to catch someone by surprise (which is at least 25% of combat SOP for this build), or trying to humble someone who's being arrogant ("Ain't nobody gonna save you now, girlie! The Merchants/ABB/Empire rules these streets!" *punch* "I disagree with your assertion.") The only way to screw it up is by issuing commands, so we have to make sure our banter stays cool and confrontational instead of yelling "STOP, CRIMINAL SCUM!".

Unfortunately, we don't have any points of Firearms,

.... We don't have dots in weaponry either.

Levinbolt is better. We just can't compete in melee with people like Hookwolf. With a good ranged weapon and good mobility we may. Specially if we learn to fly, a ranged weapon is more useful. We just need a couple upgrades to get 30 charges per clip.

Watchful mind wouldn't help us with Dinah unless we already knew her, the charm is modified by intimacy.

And Barrier jacket effects armor, while CD effects defense.

  • Punching things is done with kensai(brawl) not empty hands
  • we can only use one wisp per turn right now, so we can't use flash step and lightning charge on the same turn
  • flash step doesn't cancel enemy attacks, it subtracts your successes from theirs. it also cancels your defense
  • barrier jacket basically means your always wearing a bullet-proof vest even at our level. 2 free armor with tempesta is pretty decent.

But we do have a point in brawl, which we can use with kensai.

The things that were copied are the only ones that we can learn, right?

Because Best Defense(A perfect charm buyable by having Tempesta) seem to clash horribly with every other charm in the section, permanently blocking all of them.

It is a bug, or i am misunderstanding the side effects?

I might have left a few in the PDF. I might go back and make sure later.

Every charm? It only clashes with barrier jacket . Best defense would be great if we were storms, but we aren't storms so it isn't.

Also, the writeup here left out the fact that you can turn if off easily if you want your armor back. Really, it would probably be a good idea for everyone to look at the pdf here.

I don't think it is your fault, it is simply that the charm seem to clash with the others, disabling most of them.

Of course, you gain an ...Hefty strenght bonus?(Not really sure the bonus is that high Scratch that, it is Tempesta rating in strenght, it is just plain terrible for emma.), but you become instantly a glass cannon without any chance of not being a glass cannon.
Best defense isn't a good buy anyways, since it cost 2 charm dots. Way to expensive for what it does.
Also that.

Edit: racnor clarified that you can deactivate the charm. Maybe it is useful if you have not regalia/magical armor?

Best Defence seems to work best as a sole defensive charm. I think its mostly for Tempesta builds.

What we really need are proposals for good inspire/Appear/shape charms. We have three dots of these, and only two for eveything else. (Levinbolt/kensai+celestial dance, basically)

Always Prepared seems good. It would only be a glorified sewing kit at first, but with upgrades is a Omnitool. Really nice when you have craft 4.

(But is something we should probably buy later, not now)

I am mechanically utterly out of my depth but I really don't care, because this is a street level game and I feel no need to optimize. :p

[ ] Plan: Mean Streets
- Count No Cost
- The Stare (Brazenness)
- The Naked City (Dodging Danger)
- Hear Me, O Muse
- For the First Time

Yes, the closest this plan has for a combat charm is Count No Cost, which (if I'm reading it right) will let the target (ie. us) add a few dice to combat rolls. The Stare suits an Emma who wants to be able to stare someone down through force of will, while The Naked City lets her deal with all the problems Brockton Bay has a bit better. Hear Me, O Muse is basic artistic self buff, while For the First Time rounds out her favoured requirements and makes it easier for her to try new things.

We don't have brazennesss or dodging danger as one of our specialties (in fact we don;t even have those skills), and Hear Me, O Muse and For the First Time both run off our zero expression. Also, FtFT is a two dot, so we can't afford it with this plan.

Don't you only need one dot in <skill> to buy a two dot?

Anyway, vote withdrawn. :p

Not completely sure about Barrier jacket, i would prefer another mobility charm if someone suggest a good one.

Also, a few charms we might like in the future:

Wings of Air: Flight.
Outrace the sun: Running like a car.
Read the wind: Blind sense.
Barrier Jacket: Armor.
Better Together: This one is perfect to make friendships. Also makes us a supernatural shipper.
Life of the party: More social power.
The Right Word: Allows us to instantly know the Aspirations of the target. And makes easier to convince people when appealing to their aspirations.
Razzle Dazzle: Apply an Invocation to persuasion.

Since we're equally bad at melee and ranged at the moment, Kensai should be better than Levinbolt, since at least we aren't stuck whiffing everything and then forced to reload expensively

Once we upgrade Levinbolt, that isn't an issue. (And is not like we can start fighting right away anyway, even with Kensai. We need some experience
before we enter any serious fight)

Levinbolt allows us to use our mobility to the maximun effect, especially after we learn to fly.
