[X] "Explain"
-[X] After the explanation, if warranted. Just make sure neither of them hurts the other, while you call the police to let them settle it from here.

And now we try the Sherlock thing?

PLAN SOCIAL JUSTICE FAIRY
[x] "Really? I don't suppose you'd be willing to share."
- [x] Let them talk. Make sure they don't devolve into shouting each other down, we want to keep things at least semi-civil.
- [x] Do we have a phone to record everything they say? We should record everything they say.
- [x] If applicable, call the police/ social workers/ etc. and sit by to keep them both non-violent until taken care of.
- [x] Wish we'd taken lessons from daddy in cross-examining people.

would explain count as an order how careful do we have to be with wording

I would switch the order, or include a conditional to the call the police afterwards part. it will take time for the police to arrive, so if were always going to call them no matter what we might as well do that first.

I can't remember did we get a social charm to help with this.

edit-realized they would just skip over the weight so never mind

I guess this vote works, but if we use our phone we would have to give it to the cops, could we borrow their phone instead and make sure to tell them on record that were recording for if we call the cops.

We don't carry phone. It was said in the last update. Also, it feels to much like police interrogation if we are asking their phone to record (if we have a phone, and do it subtly, that may be more acceptable). Previously, we use JUSTICE mode because we presume there's a need for Magical Girl Interrupt, but now that things has calmed down, I rather we give the impression of someone more friendly/relatable. Just a passing-by-well-meaning-civilian. Acting too much like legal officer of law may also bite us later.

I also change 'applicable' to 'warranted'. Just prefer it that way.

We can't easily call the police or other people either, without a phone. Maybe we should just escort them directly to the police station after their explanations?

1.3
This... isn't what you were expecting.

Part of you is relieved; after all, you've barely had your powers for twenty minutes. You have practically no experience with your powers, and barely any idea how they work.

Still, even if he's lying, you need to take this all in. You remember Daddy telling you about cross-examining witnesses (something that you regret paying little attention to at the time), and how when he went over certain events with his clients, he would always record their conversations, making sure you could go back and make sure you always had all the facts. You really wish you had thought to bring your cell phone, but that ship has obviously sailed.

Well, if he's telling the truth, you may as well try to be nice to the guy. You smile pleasantly enough at the guy, and ask "Well, if that's the case, mister..."

"Garret," he answers briskly, "Lyle Garret."

"Garret," you continue, "then I'm going to need to ask what's going on. If you're telling the truth, then I assume that you won't mind." You glance at the woman, who manages to keep a cool aura despite the bruise and the disheveled brown hair. She doesn't object, unless glaring at Lyle with equal disdain counts.

Lyle takes a deep breath, then begins. "I met Jean about a year and a half ago. I was working construction on one of the houses nearby, Jean was friends with my employer, and she seemed... interested in me." You can't say that's not true, Lyle has the kind of build that would turn a few female heads (and maybe some male ones). You personally lean towards the boy band look, though you can appreciate many kinds. Now if Taylor were here...

If Taylor were here, you'd be a lot happier.

You shake yourself out of your moment of weakness as Lyle continues. "We talked, we started going out, and I eventually moved in. She got me a job away from my asshole of a boss, and things were... good. Until one day someone calls the house phone and starts asking for 'merchandise'."

You take a glance at Jean, she doesn't so much as flinch at the implied accusation, content to keep on glaring.

"So when she was out, I started looking around. That's when I found the coke hidden under the floorboards in our bedroom closet." Lyle stops and sighs, taking a moment of contemplation. If he's lying, he's quite the actor. He's certainly got you hooked. "So I confronted her, and she tried to hit me from behind with a baseball bat. I tried to get it out of her hands, and somehow in the struggle she got hit with it. She got back up, I tried to scare her with the vase, and..."

"And then I showed up," you finish for him. You're pretty sure you believe him, but the problem is that you're so new to this. Why didn't you pay more attention to Daddy whenever he told you about cross-examination? Didn't trials have someone recording everything said? You decide from now on you'll take your cell wherever you go, you sorely need it right now.

"What a load of bullshit."

You turn to Jean, the first time she's spoken since you broke in. She turns to you, and says "Listen, everything he says after the part about us moving together is a lie. I noticed money coming into our shared bank account that was too much for what we make. When I asked Lyle about it, he'd dodge the question, so I started to follow him, which is how I saw him entering an abandoned building in Merchant territory. That's when I looked and found the cocaine under the floorboards and when I confronted Lyle he hit me with the bat."

As she speaks, the spite in her voice increases slowly but noticeably. You don't think she's experiencing the same type of emotional impact as you did. Assuming that she's telling the truth.

"All right," you begin, still wishing you recorded all this. "I'm not a cop, so I can't exactly take this to court. Can you please give me your phone so I can get the cops?"

After a phone call, you get Lyle and Jean seated down at opposite ends of the dinner table, while you watch over them to make sure that violence doesn't occur again.

You have to deal with deathly quiet ten minutes before the police arrive. You seem them park in front of the house.

Clearly they'll take it from here, as the cliche goes. But how will you deal with them?

[X] Greet them. You did resolve the situation.
-[X] Give a quick summary then leave.
-[X] Tell them what the happy couple told you and ask what the police think.
-[X] See if you can't go "downtown" with them. See justice through!

[X] Slip out the back. You don't want to deal with any more questions, and you need some sleep.

[X] Write-In.

Read Lyle (Wits+Empathy(Emotion)+Open Heart)= 2 successes

Read Jean (Wits+Empathy(Emotion)+Open Heart)= 0 successes

Normal stuff like this is what the cops are for. If they can't do their jobs, then we'll need to reevaluate pretty much all of our goals (This is also IC thinking as well).

Why do I get the feeling that our future selves will dearly wish that our subsequent adventures had gone as smoothly as this one?
