To make people actually remember, here's it once for posterity: Minako is nonbinary and uses they/them. This message will be pinned so you people stop getting it wrong and pissing me off. If you get it wrong in the future I'm going to be much less nice, considering you have to scroll past it just to read the quest.

Now, I'm not saying Rin Wished for something like 'mind control powers lololol'...

From her POV, Rin is a Hard Woman Making Hard Decisions Queen. She's got a Kingdom... that is being wronged by the 'Others' from across the river Mitakihara, the city that grows fat in riches while her own sinks further into despair.

So she's got A Mission. She's the good guy, no, the goodest gal, who is doing what must be done, and who is clearly nice and good as demonstrated by how she protects her own! She keeps her cult followers subjects safe, and loves her sister (child, I will keep you safe), which is good plus plus, right? :thonk:

... I lost the Rin's POV train of thought somewhere in there.

At any rate, I'm thinking Rin's Wish most likely cemented her personality and allowed her to do... what she does. Not saying her Wish changed her, so much as guessing she had this whole mess of problems and wishes (not all bad, as nobody is 100% evulz), and her Wish was the point she chose her path. Her Wish, then, would have been something along the lines of 'to be Kasamino's queen', or 'to bring everyone into her warm embrace/love/glow/whatever' (everybody's in the glow), or 'to unite all people within our nation' ( :V ).

Or maybe she just Wished to be a magical drug lord (they'll go way out for another hit). What with that description of Mami feeling euphoric under Rin's 'glow'. Magi are the perfect target.

Underneath it all, she probably just wants to be the mom to all the magi children and lord it all over them forever...

"So you're Sayaka's and Kyouko's daughter."
"...Child. But yes. And I'm totally objective."
"Nuh uh-"
"I wished to understand them. No one can lie to me literally ever, even if I want them to, and I know exactly what people think and feel around me."
"...Well damn alright then."

Unfortunately, that still requires Mami to believe Minako about both how her powers work, and that the information she relays to Mami is true. Not saying it won't be crucial, but it's probably going to take multiple factors working in our favor to break the brainwashing. Unlike the other girls, Rin has her hooks in deep in Mami, and she's not going to let go easily.

*Sucks on teeth* While we knew she was evil, we didn't know how evil.

Yeah, this is going to be heartbreaking.
We... didn't?

Aren't we heaaaaaavily suspecting* Rin of witching out magi? You'd think that'd be more evil.

*We're a cop now, it's supsicion until we got verifiable evidence that'll stand in court. :p

Something that might be important is the narrative Rin is setting up around Sayaka and Kyouko's relationship? Kyouko as an abused and misguided wife, who Mami might think she can save, or something?
A thought went towards "maybe Rin's family is screwed up that way and she's projecting"... since it came kind of out of the blue.

But of course, it makes more sense that she's just saying this to manipulate Mami. "Your kouhai is EVULZ, but wait! You can save your other kouhai!"

But maybe it could be both.

What doesn't make sense is that control snapped so easily in the previous cases
Maybe not only conviction matters, but also the depth of it?
Like, she could hoodwink you on the promises of love and friendship, but if you're a sociopathic misanthrope it's not gonna hold you for too long
Her magic doesn't have to screw your mind if you're the one doing your own mindfucking.

Magic can't force a change in a magi's mind, but it can knock on the door and promise Good Things™. Magi are the perfect target, so they are likely to open up.

There was that magi we met, that wasn't affected by Rin's bullshit, right? Sayaka pegged that one as at the very least to have been crushing on yet another magi we met. It fits, that someone who has an active interest in someone else like that wouldn't fall for... Rin's magical drugs. Can I call it that? :V

Something else I've thought that fits: Rin's seeming... eagerness to 'punish' that girl we got her to turn over. She's not in the 'glow' anymore, she's not under Rin's thumb, under her screwed up form of love or whatever. It makes sense she resents them then, from her psycho point of view.

It might be a question of how much time and effort she spends on a given person. Uriko and Henrietta were clearly throwaways meant to be used disposably-Henrietta wasn't even part of the Glow, just some sort of affiliate. Whereas Yuuko was sacrificed to buy Rin time and maintain the facade of being a good neighbor, and we know they felt deeply betrayed by that-in that case the brainwashing probably had to be actively broken along with most of Yuuko's memories.

Sidenote-we should have Mina take a look at those three. Maybe they can find some of the traces Rin left on their minds?

You know what would be awesome?
If Rin was so reactionary and politically incorrect towards the LGBT+ community she even believes that every Magi should be strictly heterosexual and find herself a husband if she doesn't Witch out first.

Come on, Moiderah. Do it.
Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeew it!
( she should also hate puppies and kick them every time she sees them, cuz why the hell not )

Entirely possible she had a family member transition and that's why it keeps coming up with her? Maybe she lost a "sister" and assumed their partner was abusing them or making them transition or something. I've seen weirder logic?

Ugh.

Just had an awful thought.

What if Rin's 'sister' was in the process of transitioning, and Rin wished to... 'save' 'her'?

Ah, fuck.

An inverse of Minako's own power. 'An enlightening of one's own emotions unto others (in this case, Rin's delusions of being a Princess Team Mom)' as opposed to 'the reception of true meanings, originating from others, brought upon one's own self'. No wonder she can bypass the mental immunity clause. If she can line her words with her emotions, she can pass the beliefs encoded in those thoughts into the sub-consciousnesses of her audience, without directly interfering in the higher thought processes.

Or at least, that's my best guess.

That's infuriating. And terrifying. But mostly infuriating.

Ah, fucksticks. First the Wing of Magius, now the Glow... Mami really has an issue with getting wrapped up in Magi Cults, doesn't she?

My first thought for getting her out is to get her in a position where Rin leaves Mami. If that promise (which is probably what most of the brainwashing is built around) is broken, the rest of the programming should follow.

Unfortunately, Mami's the type of person who's set in her beliefs, and tends to... break... when proven otherwise. She's strong, but she's also brittle.

Akane's good at hitting stuff. She can teach them to hit stuff good. Probably? I feel like each of them would be good at any, but this vote made for easy copypasting. :V

This seems OK?

Sayaka should know a thing or two about grief management. :V

So, just curious, what's the logic for Akane doing the sparring and Tomo doing the Power Understanding. Just asking, since it's pretty similar to my not-quite-made vote, but with it flipped, so just asking to be convinced, I suppose?

Since I made this vote, well, I was more or less thinking that Tomo's started out with less powerful abilities and almost certainly had to get clever in the timeskip in order to survive

Not to say that Akane is a slouch in figuring out the way to punch stuff to death, but she's like Mitakihara's Asura
She doesn't need finesse to destroy things, she needs it not to destroy them
And that's a little different pool of abilities than what Minako seems to have? What with weird chainsaw bat ( bat chainsaw? ) and eyes that look at people and figure what they're thinking
Since they have three of them, btw, that probably means they can track three people at a time

[X] Sparring (Akane)
[X] Power understanding (Tomo)
[X] Corruption management. (You)

Gah missed voting the last few times, work has been an experience lol.

Also man this is some next level cult stuff going on with Rin, looks like a Mami fight is inevitable at this point unless Minako can pull a emphatic hat trick.

I'd say even with our empathy powers, we'll still have to fight Mami. At least we can drag her out of her stupor this way.

Corruption management. (You)
This sounds like a self help book title.

Maybe Sayaka should write it. :thonk:

Corruption Management And You.

A text meant for Magi, talking about Sayaka's life experiences on the Magi job, detailing her thoughts, reactions, mistakes, insights, and ideas about paths not taken. More of an autobiography at that point than just a self help book, but really, people in general just see the title and think it's about Sayaka dealing with corrupted cop coleagues.

CHAPTER 2 - 17
[X] Power understanding ( Tomo )
[X] Corruption management ( you )
[X] Sparring ( Akane )

"Alright," you say, pointing at Tomo, "you're gonna help them handle their power in cleverer ways."

She nods. "What's their power?"

"They're an empath. It's not really related to how you handle your speed buut-"

"Lateral thinking. Got it."

You turn your head to Akane. "You'll spar with Mina."

"You sure about that? I mean-"

"I am. I know you can pull your punches when you need to and I trust you with that. What's important is that you're terrifying." You can't help but smirk a little. "Mina's only sparred with their girlfriend for now. Someone like you is a wake-up call and a reminder not to relax."

She shrugs. "Hey, makes sense."

"And I'll help them manage their grief. I mean, my pool's grown, but I still had to manage it a lot while I was younger." You turn around to face the city. In the distance you see a brief glimmer of purple among the buildings. Your kid's jumping on their way here right now.

A few more minutes pass before they finally bound their way up the hill and hit the cliff face. Their shoe hits the edge, and the momentum carries them just enough to have them step onto the ground in front of you, their hands in their pockets.

"Uh, hi!" They wave their hand as they see you, Akane,, and Tomo. "So, uh...what's the-"

"You're going with Tomo first." You point to Tomo right behind you. "She'll help you figure out your power. After that, I'll teach you corruption management, and then you'll spar Akane."

[=]

Your name is Minako, and training goes by pretty fast with Tomo and your mom.

Tomo tells you about secondary abilities and how all magical abilities have other uses and techniques and extra properties. Her ability is about speed, so that means not only can she move faster, she can also reload quickly, increase the speed at which her crossbow can fire. She also brings up how her crossbow used to be pretty slow to fire.

Then she transformed it into a magazine-fed rapid-fire crossbow. It fires as fast as an assault rifle and reloads about as fast, too. This is before she enhances it with her innate magical powers.

This also leads you to thinking about how you can abuse your own powers. There's probably something interesting you can do about that...

"So do you think I could predict someone's moves?"

"Probably. At the very least you can figure out intent. I think that'd be useful. Because you said it just senses their emotional state in a split second, right?"

Tomo's emotional state is a furnished house, sitting upon the ruins of a burnt-out husk. Smoke still rises past the windows into a sky of concrete clouds. The windows of the house glow with life and conversation, and the sounds of indistinct whispering fills your mind.

The house rattles a little before a single figure just stares out the window, as though interested.

"Yeah, I'm curious about it, too." You glance at Akane.

"Heh." She smiles. "Yo, Saya! You're up!"

Your mom is next. This training session is a bit less easy to digest, because, well, it's a more abstract concept.

And it's also your mom. The first few minutes are just her discussing the general concepts. Namely since, well, you now know what's at stake if you let your grief get too high. That part you could infer.

But what's interesting is what comes next.

"There's something I've noticed about witches. It's not enough to just have a soul gem turn black with grief. You can have your gem at the edge of witching for a while until it goes out. But a magi will witch the second that they give up. They can have moments of weakness when their gem is clear, but when their soul gem turns black, a magi's emotional state will tank. And they become more susceptible to the kind of thoughts that lead to witching out."

"So what you're saying is that at the edge it's...not really the end immediately?"

"Right. But you're better off never hitting that point."

You suck air in through your teeth. "I...yeah. Yeahh..."

"Oh, and one more thing." Your mom pulls a soul gem off of her finger and forms it in her hand. It's a pristine sky blue, with only a thin smattering of black specks at the bottom. "It is possible for your soul gem to darken frighteningly quickly. If you experience some kind of trauma, if you lose a loved one, if you're having an...episode."

You wince.

"Yeah...yeah, I got it."

"Being a magi is mostly manageable. But your mental health is just as important as keeping yourself safe in combat. If you need it, your mama and I will help you find a therapist. There is no shame in seeking help."

What's next is a fight against Akane.

And it goes about as well as you expected it to. You don't even get close to getting a hit in. You definitely read her mindset during the fight; you do so frequently, but knowing what she is about to do or what she is inclined to do doesn't matter when you have no idea how to get around it.

Or, worse, when you're too scared to get past it. You try to go in for a bat swing and she blocks your attack. You swing the bat's whip mode and she snaps her fingers, knocks it out of your hand without even touching it before giving you a light tap on the back.

This happens five times. Each time, you end up face-down in the dirt.

After the sixth time, you crumble against the ground, dead tired. Akane stands over you, her gauntlets by her side, legs bent. You're in the center of a crater. She's at the edge, looking you over with a grunt. "You alright, kid?"

"Nefr...betrrntgh..."

She winces. "I...I uh...I think that's enough training for today."

[] "No! No it's not I can go another round!" [DIFFICULTY 3: Akane is an incredibly difficult opponent]

[] Opt to spar someone else.
-[] Tomo [DIFFICULTY 3]
-[] Your mom [DIFFICULTY 2, because unlike the others she will hold back. Even while trying not to.]

We wanted to work on predictions and intent, right? So why not someone who's fast enough we'll need to react in a split second?

Interesting. Witch, or her feeling us?
