"A raid," Yamato frowns, "The Abyssals have been testing our air superiority around populated areas, sadly. Unfortunately... we do not always repel them successfully."

"Should we be worried?" you ask in concern, a moment away from summoning your rigging.

"Do not worry," she shakes her head sadly, "Our air defences around the Imperial Palace are more than adequate. We would only hinder their effectiveness."

"Our drones were able to intercept them, apparently," Yamato informs the two of you, "So, where were we? Are you two sightseeing?"
Er, drones should not be engaging in air to air combat. That requires human pilots, and will require human pilots for a long time. Drones sure as hell aren't going to be conducting air defense as anything but scouts.

Unspecified point in the future, and warships are walking around as women.

What I expected to happen (and still expect to happen) is that we run into the not-a-Wo-Class-Infiltrator Minister.

*crosses fingers*

EDIT: Oh yeah.

Unless it takes place in 2050 or later, I call bullshit. Also, just because there's one fantastical element to the story doesn't mean there should be an entirely needless and conspicuous deviation from realism that could be extremely easily changed (it's one fucking word, for god's sake).

I hope that by accepting Yamato's offer, our luck won't lead us to something really disastrous and horrifying (and amusing at the sametime).

I'm intrigued at the choice at using drones as interceptors, since our current drones are more of suppport-type. Fighters or AA would had worked aswell, not that I'm complaining about the descision of using drones, just intrigued.

The again it depends on what the drones are intercepting.

If it's fights I agree with.

But if it's level bombers like B-17s or 29s or hell even B-25s I can see it. Slap on a few 20mm gun pods and figure out how to slave it to the sights, easy enough done, and boom. You have a cheap ass bomber buster.

Or go old school, and make up a cheap ass drone, optionally loaded it up with shrapnel and high explosives, then ram them into the planes.

Bullshit Abyssals ECM is bullshit no?

Through it can be that hard to add a camera and manual control to a SAM.

I recall the British had a SACLOS wire-guided MANPAD during the Cold War that was amazingly shit. Radio SACLOS guidance (that's what the Russian 9K33/SA-8 uses) would probably be more productive then wire-guidance or video-guidance.

I was thinking of a camera in the nose the video going to the controller screen.

I figured. But from what I recall that tends to work poorly for surface-air or air-air weapons since the targets are moving in 3-dimensions which causes depth perception issues on the part of the operator. For air-surface or surface-surface weapons it tends to work better.
