Don't Miss Your Deadline! (Manga Editor Quest)

I have to agree, rather than a flat -15 malus it would probably be better if it were something like -5 or -10 for every suggestion over the limit.

I have to agree, rather than a flat -15 malus it would probably be better if it were something like -5 or -10 for every suggestion over the limit.

For next turn I'll try putting a flat limit on the number of suggestions that Maeda can make a week, with Mangaka Networking actions (going to visit them in person) giving an extra free suggestion specifically for that mangaka.

I feel a -5, 10, 20, 40, etc penalty for each modification over the cap would be good. Or just start it from -10 or -15 or something.

drat. My C.R.A.P. isekai idea didn't work this round

but alas, you all know it within your hearts

a black company like this is the greatest breeding ground for isekai origin stories!!

care that Maeda does not do too much unpaid overtime because even supposedly tyrannical demon lords give better benefits packages

This one doesn't really change anything with this week's chapter, so it's being ignored.

How are you going to handle these kinds of suggestions then? Because while they don't give feedback to the chapter in question they are things that should be done going forward. Advising research direction is a valid part of the Editor's roll, but it doesn't seem to fit perfectly in the current setup.

Week 2 Rolling (Script)
Okay guys, I'm about to pass out from exhaustion, so let's make this quick. Fortunately, we've already sorted out all the bonuses and such earlier, so this shouldn't take too long.

For those who weren't here last time, here's how it works:
I roll 4d20 once for each of the manga's main stats. Then we add their bonuses to get their final result. The higher the better, with the minimum safe number being 40.

Because all of our current mangaka are New Mangaka (yes, even Tana-sensei), they will have a single reroll with a -5 penalty which will automatically be used for the lowest stat if it's below 40. Tana-sensei also has another free reroll because her script was accepted without any changes.

First of all, let's start with Space Racer Subaru-kun (Chapter 2). The bonuses are:
  • Tana-sensei's "New Mangaka" trait (+5 bonus to Writing and Art)
  • Tana-sensei's "This Ain't Kansas Anymore" trait (+20 Setting bonus for exotic location)
  • Manga Assistant Endo Yusuke (+5 bonus to Art, +5 bonus to Layout/Backgrounds)
Space Racer Subaru-kun (Chapter 2)

  • Aoki Akira's "Real Life Inspiration" trait (+25 bonus to Characters based on real life people, -15 penalty to Characters for original characters)
  • Refinement Bonuses (+20 Supporting Characters, +20 Story, +10 Dialogue, +10 Layout/Background, +20 Characters, +5 Special Effects)

Looks like the rolls are on the good side of things, even if there are some terrible rolls which can hopefully be ironed out with rerolls.

Naturally Subaru got the best ones even though they had *two* rerolls which obviously aren't gonna be used now.

We're probably gonna have to reject ninja. It's not viable for us to save, especially without being able to call for a redraw. Unless we gained more than the 10 points we have available this turn after overtime or some other gain to editing.

Edit: Ninja'd

Okay, I'm done for now. Both Aoki and Sano used up their rerolls, but Tana-sensei didn't need to. Will do the proper write up and let you guys handle the reviewing tomorrow night.

Could Tana-Sensei reroll to try for better results anyway?

In theory? But I didn't want to do an unnecessary reroll and end up with an even worse score by accident. So what I'll do is allow any unused rerolls to be used during the Review section. In other words, Tana-sensei's first two Crunch Time actions won't generate any Overwork.

Note that this only applies to the same chapter that the unused reroll is on, so you can't 'save' a free Crunch Time for any future chapters.

well, all rolls out. Now to see what we can do with our measly 10 editor points... unless they went up from research, of course.

Subaru race:

all good. at the very least one point in dialogue, and maybe 2 in characters and dynamic arts.

In order of things we can raise for quality bonus:

for 1 point: dialogue (to 50)
for 2 points: characters (to 50), dynamic art (to 50)
for 3 points: Supporting Characters

do we get to use the rerolls even if it's above 40 @zamin if we want to? In that case it might be worth it to use them both on, say, Supporting Characters, and keep the highest.

current total quality: -1.
with 5 points spent on it: +2.

rerolls could change things if we can use them even when >40. Crunch time is not advised.

Vampire Daughter:

reroll used and was worth 30 points, very good. Story>60, we satisfied that request. Super-high Character Art should count a bit for fanservice, so that's also more-or-less done.

things to raise:

for 1 point: nothing
for 2 points: Dialogue (to 70), Layout/Background (to 50), Special Effects (to 48).
for 3 points: Supporting Characters (to 50)
special: for 7 point we could get Characters to 100. It's kinda tempting, isn't it? the perfect score for character art...

current quality: +4.
For every 2 editor points we can get another +1, up to 7.

Ramen Ninja

reroll used to avoid a <40, gave the equivalent of 14 points, decent enough.

2 stats under 40. needs 4 points to bring them to the bare minimum.

for 1 point: nothing
for 2 points: setting (to 40), Layout/Background (to 50), Characters (to 40), Special Effects (to 50)
for 3 points: nothing

current quality: -3.
every 2 editor points spent here will give 1 quality to final product.

SO, my thoughts:

1)can we/should we use the 2 unused rerolls for Subaru, probably on the lowest score we can't just raise with editor points to the next tier?

2)Do we want to use 7 points to get a 100 on Vampire Characters stat? It's tempting.

3) optimal use of points (if we have 10) is the 1 point option on Subaru, 4 points on ninja to bring it up to bare minimum, and then 5 remaining points on the rest.

Unless we choose the 7 point option... which we can't do unless we have more than 10 points, actually, as 4 are NEEDED for ninja not to be rejected.

4)Vampire is best one by far, and can become even better. Ninja is by far the worst, but we HAVE.

EDIT: I saw we CAN use the rerolls for Subaru. That could help. best score to reroll is probably one of these:

Supporting Characters: 42 + 5 = 47

Art

Layout/Background: 38
+5 + 5 +5 = 53
Characters: 38 + 5 + 5 = 48
Dynamic Art: 38 + 5 + 5 = 48
Special Effects: 42 + 5 + 5 = 52.

characters and dynamic arts only if we don't give them the 2 points though

Yeah. But you guys will have to vote for it yourselves during the Review phase.

can we choose which roll to keep, which I imagine would be represented as "she had a few different pages for the same scene and we choose the best one"?

for example, we reroll dynamic art twice, first roll was total 48, and then we get a 60 and a 30. Can we keep the 60?

If you choose to reroll the same stat multiple times, only the highest one is picked at the end.

Edit: To clarify, this applies even if you reroll once and the new roll turns out to be lower than the original. In character, Maeda is basically going "Never mind. Scrap that and we'll just stick to your last draft".

I think we should use Tana's free crunch time rerolls on Character and Dynamic Art. Odds are decent we can get a +1 to +2 from even slightly better rolls, saving us critical editor points for saving the other people's work.
