DARLING in the FRANXX - it's literal

We're a third of the way through and the pace still feels a little sluggish.

Character drama is good, but I think the writers could do with moving things along now.

We don't really have any establishing shots or indication of how much time has passed since last episode but I'm guessing that Plantation 13 is slowing making its way to the Grand Crevasse that Papa has ordered Hiro and Zero Two to be delivered to. Odds are that its either a major hotspot in the battles that Zero Two and the other Plantation were involved in, which would explain why she's repeatedly telling the other Parasites to say or do anything that they were holding back because they're all probably going to be dead soon. She's not being dismissive, she's being honest because she's probably seen it happen.

Ok. the War between the sexes was hilarious. Actually had me laughing my butt off at the sheer puberty'ness of the entire thing.

It seems about as good a time as any to make the plot move now. Two episodes team building and establishing we're going to see murder death kill in the future.

Anyone want to bet who bites it first? I'll put forward Gun-Mech's Guy(fat one). The girl in his thing has plot around that book and is hanging with What'sHisFace but he simply does not have anything going for him. Also, big guys tend to bite it across media for whatever reason.

I'm not so certain someone's going to die next episode. Last time the show set up death flags was episode 4, but episode 5 took a different turn.

The mention of the "language of flowers" in this episode made me finally try looking up the meanings behind the names of the FranXXs. The problem is only delphinium and Celosia argentea are specific plants. Genista, chlorophytum, and strelitzia are plant genera.

Delphiniums apparently mean "openness to new experiences and overall positivity" and blue delphiniums also "symbolize dignity." I can't quite figure out how that applies to Ichigo and Goro. "Overall positivity" fits Goro reasonably well I guess.

Anyone else have thoughts on how the meaning of plants & flowers plays into the show?

There's the pasta about strelezia, but that's about it.

Although we did get to see a strelezia flower inn this one which is neat.

Is this the day anime becomes recognized in the mainstream?

Because I think we can put it off a bit longer.

Please.

We all know Kanye has good taste in Mobile Suits. Guess Kim would know the best girl of the season.

More SoL and character development for this ep, which honestly feel a lot interesting compared to ep 7. There can never be enough Zero Two in one episode.

We see that 02 has warmed up a little bit to other squad members besides Hiro and Ichigo. She also seemed to retain a bit of the insecurity regarding her inhuman nature, as shown in the rooftop scene.
Ichigo, however, is pretty crap at being the leader seeing that she seemed to further encourage the whole War of the Sexes thing.

Mitsuru continued being a dick. Goro is surprisingly more playful than I thought. And as shown before, we kind of get the reason why Hiro was the leader of the group, which is the sense of emotional maturity and empathy that he has. While everyone seems too stubborn to take a step back and let the conflict go by, he genuinely tried to figure out the way to defuse the situation. And currently, it's also seemed like he is still distanced from the boys(such as not joining them for the bath at the lake, spend his time either alone or with Zero Two, resulting in the parasites being split into Hiro&02 group, boys group and girls group.

That aside, I wonder if there is something more to Miku's reaction to the picture. It was almost too shocking of a reaction to just recognize one's own mortality.

>A gift is something that helps "special" emotions emerge
>The feelings of receiving something from someone else,
>The desire to give something to someone else,
>The feeling of wanting to give someone something, but failing to in the end.
>I've been mulling over what these emotions are for a long time now but...
>...it is right here and now that I've come to understand them.

That's a lot of Death Flags

I really feel like the recent episode really sums up how confusing Darlifra is. The episode starts with the girls getting their pilot suits partially melted. Disolving clohing is not unknown elsewhere and has even less justification beyond fanservice than even a beach episode. But from that initial premise an actual episode emerged, digging right into the relationships between characters, how they feel, how they feel about each other, along with raising a general question about respect. That doesn't feel like it should be possible, and yet ...

The show reminded me a lot of a VN I used to read called Dra+koi, it's crazy, juvenile and generic at times yet still capable of dealing heartfelt moments and some exploration of its deep theme.

Mod Edit: Link removed.
Edit: Thanks, mod. The point is just because the premise being generic or juvenile humor doesn't mean it can't be turned into a serious story. Gintama started as a gag/shounen but it also has many moments to remind that the story is still based on one of the most romanticized and bloody periods of Japanese history.

Well, in this episode, we find out what sort of show this is re character death and flags thereof

The kind where flags are to be overcome, which means that if a char dies it's likely going to be at a major major story point, arc or series end, not as the start of a char arc / drama source.

Also while 002 is best girl, Ichigo is now very firmly 2nd place.
I mean, look at her

Also the only triangle that got bombed this episode was the love triangle, as I reckon this will start the route to a Goro / Ichigo end for them.

Also also "hey this was my ex's" might not be the best way to give a present hiro, but oni likes it so hooray. Just ignore the fact that in the OP its broken. *Concern*
Naomi (punished, yan, dead, klax hybrid or otherwise) will remember this

Pretty great ep I'd say, Goro continues to be best bro

YES! YES! YES! FUCK YOU YOU STUPID DEATH FLAGS! GORO/ICHIGO FTW!!!

*coughs*

but yeah I like the insight we got into Goro, Ichigo and Hiro as kids and how they managed to become best friends. Zero Two is and always will be Best Girl but Ichigo is really goddamn close behind now. :D

EDIT: The Klaxosaur this week was pretty interesting, an ever expanding living bomb that grows a little larger with every explosion.

Also did anyone else immediately get flashbacks to the Leliel battle in Evangelion when it was shown Goro and Delphinum were trapped inside the Klaxosaur?

Damn GoBro.

Glad he was able to get everything off his chest. Thinking about it, being as naive as they are might actually make that easier at their age. Now that they have the words to say 'I love you' at least.

And good on Miku for giving Ichigo that telling off before it got to long past due like most drama anime would have. Lol at Zorome for knowing her well enough to get the fuck out of her blast radius too.

I also liked the extra info on what FranXX can do, secondary power, the escape-pods, ect. It makes them seem less like deathtraps if the Pistil gets knocked out a la episode 3.

Fixed but I do not and never have given a fuck about spoilers. If foreknowledge ruins your enjoyment, you weren't really enjoying it in the first place.

I was a little worried about where they were going with him, but after today I can safely say that Goro is my son now.

I thought it was rather refreshing that Goro felt comfortable in outright telling Hiro that he loved Ichigo and that he didn't want to hold back anymore. That and him just telling Hiro that Ichigo liked him. Hopefully Goro's confession and the results of this episode mean that the tedium of a love triangle stops, especially considering that Goro and Ichigo have such great chemistry together.

The other interesting thing is that Hiro seemed to have an uncanny way of getting people to listen to him and like him, given what we saw in the flashback of making the other kids in the nursery get along and the naming scene in an earlier episode. Now whether this was because he had a code in teens which made him "elite" or because he had confidence that he later lost because he was unable to sync with his partner and failed out of becoming a parasite.

We've got three episodes before this half of the show ends, so either we're going to get two more episodes where the pairs form stronger relationships before the bottom completely falls out from under everything, or this is going to still be a pretty slow burn show.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who made the connection.

As for the rest, I rather liked the episode, it had some fun moments, and once again, more about how this group are being given special treatment for some reason. Though I have to wonder if Papa actually wrote the letter that went with the gifts. Or if he's even involved in the process at all.

I suspect it's some generic motivational words which Papa barely even signs the end of, if he sees it at all. Really doubt they care much for the various pilots as individuals, from what we've seen of the adults so far.
