When is a Spoon a Sword? + And I'm Asking Why, Lord? + The Reluctant Bridegroom, Death New

When is a Spoon a Sword? (Pokemon OC-Insert)

By: Fabled Webs

A modern-day swordmaster dies and wakes up in the pokemon world. A ralts aims to become a glorious knight.

Hoenn will never be the same. OC-Insert.
Yeah, this turned out to be rather boring. I have no investment in the characters and the story doesn't give me any reason to care. The slow pace means that there aren't many payoffs for the "sword-wielding ralts" concept, not helped by a tendency toward violating conservation of detail - there are a number of small scenes and conversations that don't really advance anything, whether the main plot or the main character arcs. It's not even very funny.

And I'm Asking Why, Lord?

Two days after the failed Extermination, Charlie and her crew have the hotel up and running.

Unfortunately, Heaven did not take too kindly to a sinner killing Adam, nor the fact that Lucifer had to get involved. He has been summoned to Heaven not by Sera, but by Michael.

Charlie has never seen her father so terrified in her life.

Something was not right with Heaven, that much she knew. Charlie glanced at the crumpled letter Lucifer had left behind, and felt dread grip her throat. What else was Heaven lying about?
Yeah, this fic does not start off on the right foot. Tense troubles again, for one. But more importantly, it's just badly structured. We start with a backstory on a Hellaverse-compliant take on Creation, and the author makes A Choice to make a large part of it something like six paragraphs in a row just giving a basic description of every. Single. One of the original angels. Blagh.

On a sunny summer morning, the young goddess Orihime gathers flowers on a hillside. She is blissfully unaware that not only are dark forces watching her, but she has already been caught in their web. But then again, so has her soon-to-be-husband.

An AU take on the myth of Hades and Persephone.
Yawn. The context change for the characters does them no favors. The plot is toothless and edgeless and predictable - I could probably call all the upcoming story beats if I wanted. This is not helped by the author making Orihime immediately attracted to Ichigo. Ultimately, this isn't what I read Bleach fic for.

When Scars Show

The_Tail_System

When Nodoka decides that her husband's idea to take her child on a life long training journey to make them a "Man among men" is a no-go, a fight ends up breaking the married couple apart, a decision that ended up being the right choice as just a few years later it comes to Nodoka's attention that her child may not even be her son at all, but her daughter.

Genma however isn't as accepting as he decides to kidnap the child and take her on a training journey anyway. Ten years, two more kidnappings, and a curse later, and Ranma has the body she wants, but isn't allowed to have it as her father drags her into an engagement. But maybe her new fiancee is exactly who she needs to get away from her father once and for all.
Paragraaaaaaaaphs!

Pro tip of the day: err on the side of shorter paragraphs instead of longer. The paragraphs early on are long, rambling, and could easily be split into shorter ones, and should for better readability. The sentences are also prone to running on, too. Oh, and the dialogue tags are badly formatted in that they're not attached to the same person speaking.

Singing in Binary: AI-dol Dreams [Cyberpunk 2077]

By: unkillablemage

Aria dreams to be a star, to stand on a stage and bare her soul to a cheering crowd.

She wants the Glitz. The glamor. The ecstatic highs and harrowing lows. She wants it all⋆✴˚。⋆

A difficult prospect considering her... lack of humanity.

Or body.

But if a rogue AI wants to make it big anywhere? Night city is the place to be.

As long as she doesn't get caught. Easy.

Right?
Chapter 17 is where I decided I was going to be following this fic and keeping it on the list. That's the chapter where Aria, hired for infosec for a robbery job, gets around the requirement to be physically present for the briefing by hacking into the leader's cybernetics and projecting herself into his cybernetic eyes. So we get a scene from the guy's perspective and that wonderful stomach-dropping moment where he realizes this fact, clued in solely by the fact he had backup with eyes on the diner who couldn't see Aria's avatar. It's a wonderful moment that really gets across how terrifying an unshackled AI is in Night City.

And the chapter 18 starts with Aria freaking out about the digital environment she had to be in to pull it off.

That contrast between Aria's naive, completely-unaware-she's-a-weirdo behavior and the fact that she's an AI and everyone is fucking terrified of her doesn't come up often enough. One of the few critiques I have of the fic is that before Aria fries herself and is forced to rely on her friends to get repairs we don't have nearly enough scenes from outside perspectives, especially when the fic is very strictly third-person limited and as such so much emotion is hidden from Aria. But man, whenever it happens, it hits it out of the park.

Then there's the more recent chapters, which are balls-to-the-wall tense as you slowly realize this is when Aria's reliance on software kludges and ignoring her CPU damage is going to bite her. We follow her as she guides Solei, as she slips more and more into the machine instead of Aria, and you pray, pray, that what you know is coming doesn't come. But of course it does. It's been signposted for a long-ass time.

Those are the two high points of the fic. But the rest is pretty darn good. It's a classic setup of "naive newcomer shows up, has enough personal power to not get ground down into cynicism". Aria has an effect on people, reawakening friendly altruism in people who'd long thought it dead, brings them back to the days where they had hopes and dreams and ideals. I am still waiting for the actual idol part to kick in more frequently.

One last word. Obviously, this is on the list. But the author has been posting this fic to SV to basically no response. Granted, that's because it's a crosspost from SB and all the chapters have come in the last two weeks, but dammit, I'm asking y'all to go, read, and comment so he's not screaming into the void.

Takamachi Nanoha might not have been an ordinary girl, but she still did her best to be one, going to school and making friends with other girls her age. However, her world is forever changed one night when twenty-one mysterious artifacts fall from the sky.

A chance encounter with one of them draws Nanoha into a world of magic, and she is thrust into a battle for a set of wish-granting artifacts of unimaginable power. However, Nanoha is not an ordinary girl, and her ability to make friends should not be underestimated.
Okay, the Jewel Seeds being Intelligent Devices that can communicate is an interesting concept, but the story ends up in the same place the original did by Chapter 3 and Chapter 2 is marred by a long round of exposition. Which is a pity, because I'm desperate for good Lyrical Nanoha content.

Gotta Dash 'em All + Dragonstone + A Taste of the Good Life New

Gotta Dash 'em All - Rainbow Dash the Awesome

As Rainbow Dash attempts to break new barriers of speed, she finds herself transported to a mysterious world, inhabited by creatures with unbelievable powers. While her friends in Equestria search for a way to return her home, she is forced to search for her own way home with the aid of her new friends, a trio of humans named Ash, Cilan, and Iris.
Some day I am going to find a decent MLP x Pokemon crossover. Today is not that day. The first chapter is rough: a lack of both punctuation and description around the dialogue.

Stannis makes a discovery beneath his hated new castle that will change not just war and politics, but the king's least favorite brother himself.

Or: The One In Which Stannis Has A Dragon, And It Goes Great At First But Problems Soon Arise.

Complete.
This is a good character study but a depressing, unsatisfying read. The dragon does nothing to improve things, either for Stannis or the setting as a whole. He is maimed by dragonfire. It worsens his relationship with Robert, worsens his relations with almost everybody since he's now either a threat or an opportunity. And it ends abruptly with no real resolution.

A Taste of the Good Life - Eakin

Main Course is a successful chef and restaurant owner. Or he was, anyway, until a fire tore up his life's work and left him adrift. When he visits his sister in the rural backwater town of Ponyville, he discovers an abandoned building that's perfect for a quick fix-up so he can flip it for a profit. But the building comes with an unforeseen tenant, and when he lets her stick around he discovers that maybe, just maybe, there's something out there more important than wealth and fame.
So mostly this fic is good. Main Course is a solid lead with clear plot-driving motivations, a classic city-to-country character arc, and his building of a restaurant in Ponyville would make a good A-plot if it weren't for Scootaloo. For all that I have a low regard for the type of plot it represents, the main A-plot of Main Course finding Scootaloo in the ruined restaurant he's bought and getting attached manages to be heartwarming and work itself into Main Course's plot of integrating into Ponyville. The Mane 6, when they appear, are used appropriately, with only one hiccup.

The problem is that the fic stacks up minor, niggling problems until it runs headlong into a hard stop. The restaurant plot is half-baked due to taking a backseat to the Scootaloo plot; a key sign is that the actual renovation of the restaurant is glossed over and no description is given of the final decor. The Scootaloo plot itself is a common plot in this fandom, and invites all sorts of fridge logic. Expository sections are a drag, especially the one where Scootaloo explains her backstory in the fic and there's just this giant block of a paragraph with none of the emotional description you'd expect out of such a scene.

All of which pales in comparison to the fic reintroducing Scootaloo's alcoholic, emotionally abusive mother - and immediately transitioning into a romantic plot between her and Main Course. Nope. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

You're not on the list. Fuck off.

The Stormborn and the Stormbringer + The Cutest Demon Lord + Fifty Shades of Toast New

The Stormborn and the Stormbringer

SkilledWarriorKiwi

The dragon has three heads.

Daenerys had been taught about dragons, about her family history and the great beasts they rode. About their thick hides and near impenetrable scales. About their horned heads and fanged maws that can spit fire at a moments notice. About their leathery wings which sounded like the roar of thunder with each beat.

She had never been taught about them having multiple heads. The three headed crimson dragon of her House's flag was to represent Aegon and his sister-wives, of the three dragons they used to bend the Seven Kingdoms to their knees. It was figurative.

But this one she cradled to her breast had three heads at the end of its sinuous serpentine necks. The crown of each head was dotted with small, barely-there horns with more along the length of the spine. There were also two tails, the barbed tips curling around her forearm like a babe clinging to its mother's finger. Its scales shone like gold, glittering through the ash coating its body.

The dragon has three heads.
I get the feeling this author might be ESL. There's an abundance of small errors common to ESL writers who haven't quite fully adapted to the English language as it's actually spoken/written by a native speaker. Sure, it's all technically accurate, but there's a lot of odd word choices (mixing up was and were being the standout example) and the grammatical/syntactical structure is off in a way that looks like a foreign language creeping in.

It's a pity, because this could've gone somewhere interesting, but all this bugged me so much I bailed in chapter 2. You're not on the list.

The Cutest Demon Lord

Alb410

One day out of nowhere, Kaede is summoned to another world. One eerily similar to New World Online with one key difference. As she treads the same path she once took, Kaede quickly figures out the differences between seasoned gamers and feudal citizens.

- CURRENTLY INACTIVE, not cancelled, I'm just going through a lot of problems rn srry :(
Right, I'd forgotten how much I despise the gamification of the isekai genre. This "skill" stuff is poisonous to any sort of decent progression, and it doesn't even map onto any video games I can think of! The closest I can think of is a Bethesda RPG and that doesn't even map properly! Also, I signed up for Maple as her OP video game avatar being dropped in, not her having to claw her way to the top again. Also also, why did she have to be naked on arrival?!

Fifty Shades Of Toast - Estee

Pinkie, as a baker, can make toast. Once you justifiably discard Sweetie Belle, just about anypony can make toast. So what is it about Pinkie's toasting skills which has this new stallion so fascinated as to try and ensure she'll never make toast for anypony else again?

Well, whatever it is, let's just hope his obsession somehow gets him killed off before any possible sequel.
I lack the familiarity to call whether this is a proper Fifty Shades of Gray parody, but I can definitely see it. The rich weirdo with an odd obsession? Who Estee goes out of their way to be as viscerally unpleasant as possible? There's definitely some proper Fifty Shades DNA in there.

But that's irrelevant. What's relevant is that this fic is hilarious. The core of the humor is that the unnamed stallion in this fic is, finally, the rare pony who can weird out even Pinkie Pie. It's a contrast with her usual character and it's fucking hilarious. Frankly, I like this guy as just this completely inexplicable existence, with no backstory and no clear motivations. So I was somewhat disappointed to see a sad backstory, and Pinkie promising to make some toast with love.

And then Estee yanks the rug out from under us by making it clear that this stallion wants to make love in general, if you know what I mean. At which point Pinkie sensibly clocks him over the head with his own toaster and flees.

This is reminding me why I like so many Estee stories - no flanderization of the Cutie Mark Crusaders, no social commentary. Just weirdness and lovingly crafted descriptions. After a spate of bad fics - there are many I didn't review because their issues were so immediate and banal as to not give me anything to talk about - I'm glad to finally find something good.

Shin Persona Evangelion New

Shin Persona Evangelion [NGE/Persona Fusion]

By: Ultra Sonic 007

This is a tale of fiction.

Any similarities to other such tales, or even to reality, are purely coincidental...

All characters and events and themes are doubtlessly unrelated to those that occur in fiction or otherwise...

Only those who agree to this statement are allowed to proceed. Do you understand?

...I see...

This is a world where mankind seeks to dominate others, even though man cannot control himself. It is a world of distortion and tragedy.

There are those who wish to reform the world, or at the very least, themselves...such are known as 'fools'.

But perhaps it takes a fool to succeed where the wise have failed.

Thou, fool...now it's time for you step forward, and face the tragedy that is man...
So the reason why I didn't like this fic is pretty obvious: Ultra Sonic 007 makes the interesting choice to fuse the metaphysics and plot of both source materials together - in many ways it feels like a completely separate Persona series with an Evangelion coat of paint.

Why I find this problematic has been a tougher question to answer. Philosophically, I think my main issue is that it removes so many of the appeals of a crossover fanfic. One thing I've learned doing this project is that characters are what drive engagement in fanfiction. People write and read fanfic because they like the characters and want to see more of them, in different situations. It's why there's so much Sequel Trilogy fanfic despite people manifestly not caring about the setting or plot of those movies: Rey and Kylo have an interesting enough dynamic that people keep wanting to repackage it for other settings and situations. And with crossovers, the characters from two series interacting, their personalities and ideals clashing, is a big part of the appeal. I know it is with me.

So it's quite disappointing to have this fic feature almost no Persona characters, and so far none at all beyond the Velvet Room crowd. Not gonna lie, I came into this hoping for more Persona characters to make an appearance.

Practically speaking I'm of the opinion the tight fusion of the two worlds creates structural problems as well. For one, the overall plot, while changed in detail, is still mirroring the basic plot of Evangelion, which is a bit of an issue both in that Evangelion fics tend to do this already and that it also leads toward the alt-power problem seen in other fandoms like Worm and My Hero Academia - a problem, I might add, Evangelion fic has its share of. Worse, the fusion means that people arriving from both ends of the crossover need to have all this shit explained, which leads to a lot of exposition, and that exposition is exacerbated by the use of very short chapters.

Honestly, the more I think about it the more reasons I come up with to dislike this choice of setup. You're not on the list.

Some New Fics New
Okay, fuck it. Let's do some new fics that haven't gone very far yet.

School of Hard Knocks (Ranma 1/2)

By: VoidWanderer

On their way to the Tendo Dojo, and Ranma's fateful first meeting with his future fiancee, Genma's plans are derailed when they have a chance encounter... with Nodoka.
This is why I like VoidWanderer's fics: he wastes no time in setting up and executing the premise of the fic, usually leaving us some intriguing mysteries to chew on. Genma's panic at Ranma attending Kodenma High raises eyebrows and intrigue, considering all the things he's been through. The comments about Ranma being able to draw her family sword? And the fact that Nodoka carries a gun around in this fic and gets away with it? Seriously, Void dropped three plot threads in a single 4000-word chapter, god damn.

The other reason? He's a bit like me in that he tends to refuse to write what everyone else is writing. His bias against Akane can be tiresome sometimes, but I have to admit, it drives him to create unique ideas and after all the angst I've seen over the masculinity contract it's refreshing to see that plot point defused immediately.

Yeah, I'm interested. You're on the list.

Weiss of the Marines (RWBY/One Piece)

By: Krieg Schnee

The Marines promised Order.

The World delivered Corruption.

The Marines call it justice.

Weiss will make them remember what justice truly is.
And then there's Krieg Schnee, who seems content to churn out Weiss Schnee reincarnation isekai crossovers. No shade there, the man knows what he likes.

This one is looking more promising the A Song of Weiss and Fire, which I attempted to read a while back and bounced hard off of due to various technical problems. This could still trip over its own feet - I'm going to be watching closely how long Krieg Schnee keeps her at five - but I'm willing to give this one a shot.

A Murder-Fox's Pokemon Journey

By: epiccuttlefish

A Hisuian Zoroark is driven from her territory, out into the wider world. When she encounters a Pokemon Trainer, she notices how easy it seems to be for them to get food, and desires that for herself.

Become a Trainer's Pokemon? No, of course not. She's going to become a Trainer.
The fic puts its best foot forward by spending most of the chapter going through the Zoroark's life and why she's even in a position to pull a Hyphen. She's been driven out and is kinda desperate for food, and her incomprehension of human customs whets my desire for such content. And then the Ranger perspective at the end sets up an ongoing conflict.

Excellent start that justifies the premise and sets up long-term conflict. You're on the list.

Kancolle: An Olympian Adrift.

By: pieman97405

In a world where the humanized incarnations of warships engage in pitched combat with each other a lone ocean liner must fight a far more personal battle.
An intriguing start. No inserts, no starting deep in the ocean, no military mindset. I still need more to judge, but this is promising.
