The Madness of Kurosaki's Sanity

By: 9foxgrl
One shots of the madness between Ichigo, Zangetsu, and Hollow Ichigo. It's a miracle Ichigo isn't in the loony bin.Taking suggestions from readers. I do not own Bleach.

Oh god that chapter-to-words ratio. This had better be damned funny.

Review:
The funnies died somewhere in the 30s.

Seeking a weakness

Set in the MLP: Friendship is Magic universe. The Great and Powerful Trixie quests to discover Twilight Sparkle's secret hidden cache of magical power.

Oh, the days when people needed to specify that it was Friendship is Magic instead of one of the other My Little Pony shows.

So, it's time, finally, to talk about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The little girls' show that, early in 2011, suddenly gained a large, enthusiastic secondary fanbase of grown-ass men. Ponymania would last well into 2012, newly minted "bronies" flooding every corner of the internet with ponies, much to the aggravation of the existing communities. And while things have died down since, it's still producing new material at a considerable rate.

This includes fanfiction, naturally, and here I can finally, really talk about trends. I was on the ground early here, and I've kept track of developments since. Also, I have a massive favorites archive on Fimfiction.net, so look forward to that. This specific fic taps into what's still a common plotline in the fandom: Trixie as an antagonist stronger than just another jerk of the week. Trixie is an incredibly popular character, an especially impressive feat back when she had exactly one appearance. Naturally, the ending of said episode led many fans to conclude that eventually Trixie would return to take revenge on MC Twilight Sparkle1. It's a very common plot point.

Review:
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Oh, I was so not expecting Trixie to find Twilight's porn stash. That was funny. Kudos, fic.

Verdict: Yeah, I think I'll keep this one.

Alexandriad: The Song of Fire

By: SuperGoldenFroggie
The Spring-Time Familiar Summoning Ritual summons the being most suitable for the mage. A soul of fire summons forth a soul of fire. The right spark can cause anything to burn. Fate/Zero Rider
Rated: Fiction T - English - Adventure - Rider, Louise - Chapters: 3 - Words: 20,106 - Reviews: 213 - Favs: 909 - Follows: 923 - Updated: Jun 28, 2011 - Published: May 16, 2011 - id: 6995539

Yet Another Familiar of Zero Summoning Crossover, Iskander Rider version.

Review:
Oh, how I wish there was more. Even in what little there is, we begin to see the glimmerings of character development in Louise, and the usual duel with Guiche, far from being a perfunctory way to show off Rider's power, has actual character implications. It's a demonstration of Rider's philosophy of "Victory without ruin, domination without disgrace", something that strikes a chord within Louise, and sets Guiche on a path to his own character development.

Rider himself is, of course, as much of a joy to read as he was in Fate/Zero. Boisterous, charismatic, and surprisingly deep behind all that. But again, this comes back to the problem that I wish there was more of this!

Verdict: When I wants more, I keeps.

Watermelon Waterfall

By: Mewgia Mirrorcoat
All seems lost. The Mythic Dawn stands at the gate of Cloud Ruler Temple. All the Blades have left are five thousand scrolls of Absorb Mercantile and a watermelon...

Ah, Bethesda bugs. Always a good source of comedy.

Review:
Specifically, one of those replication bugs. Five thousand scrolls of Absorb Mercantile + 1 watermelon = one very squashed and very sticky Mythic Dawn army. How does that work?

Verdict: Keeping!

  1. Spoiler alert: this actually did happen in the show.

Impressions before reading:
In which Shirou and a Kaleidostick fuse, and shenanigans ensue. Also, immensely confused Archer.

Review:
Okay. These are entirely the wrong kind of shenanigans.

Basically, author Alyeris is playing up outright female-on-female sexual molestation for humor, with poor Emiya Kirika being alarmingly passive during the whole thing. It's like they tried to replicate some of the similar shenanigans from canon, but a. overshot the mark and b. didn't consider the implications of what they were writing. Just... way too many scenes in this fic are intensely uncomfortable, like I should be looking over my shoulder to make sure nobody's reading over my shoulder. That none of it is actually funny makes things even worse.

Also, there are a couple of other problems that make this decision even easier. For one, the dialogue often comes across as stilted and overly formal thanks to the usual issue with lack of contractions. Also, we're a chapter and a half into a story with 20,000+ word chapters, and there's been almost no action. Blargh.

Of course, there are a couple of hooks. This is pretty competently written, overall, and Archer's Butt Monkey status and seeing how Emiya being a girl changes both her life and how people interact with her is a treat. Were I less sensitive to the stuff in the second paragraph, as I was when I last read this, I can easily see why I'd favorite it in the first place.

Verdict:
Sadly, I feel the same way. It had so much potential and the writing was great but a lot of the scenes made me uncomfortable as you said. I wanted to read Shirou and Kaleidostick shenanigans.

First Try

By: Lucillia
Due to a quirk of fate, Naruto passes the Academy Graduation Exam on his first try. Because of this, his life takes an interesting turn before he joins Team 7 after Kakashi poaches him from his sensei.
Rated: Fiction T - English - Drama/Humor - Naruto U., Kakashi H. - Chapters: 13 - Words: 34,887 - Reviews: 603 - Favs: 3,779 - Follows: 1,339 - Updated: Oct 8, 2012 - Published: May 30, 2011 - Status: Complete - id: 7033987

From what I remember, most of the problems of this series come in the sequels, and that First Try itself is actually pretty decent. Unfortunately, all the really interesting stuff is in those sequels. Great.

Review:
Chalk this up to another case of what would otherwise be minor gripes adding up to major problems. The narration is flat and stale, with about twice as many uses of "as" or "was" than is healthy. There's a bad habit of putting commas a word too far to the right. And then there's the fanon, such as criticism of Naruto's orange outfit or... *sighs* Naruto overloading jutsu.

And then I remembered the Sasuke bashing. For fuck's sake, chapter 3 is literally titled "Sasuke's delusions".

What makes this especially baffling is that No Way In Hell, by the same author, doesn't exhibit the same technical problems or rampant fanon, so...

Verdict:

My Little Test Subject

By: Klutzybear
GLaDOS is bored. What else is there to do in a center but hang around and watch two robots screw up the simpliest puzzles?. . . Hey, where did that pink pony come from?
Rated: Fiction T - English - Humor/Sci-Fi - Words: 8,162 - Reviews: 80 - Favs: 191 - Follows: 39 - Published: Jun 1, 2011 - Status: Complete - id: 7043022
Impressions before reading:
General fan consensus about Pinkie Pie is that she's kind of an eldritch being that does things unexplainable by Equestrian magic. Later seasons showing Pinkie has some common traits with other "Party Ponies"1 and some rather bad fics have tamped that characterizations down, but memories of Twilight trying and hilariously failing to "get" Pinkie's abilities remains lodged in the fandom's consciousness.

Now imagine how she would appear to a... harder setting3.

Review:
Ah... by the time this fic is over, you almost feel sorry for GLADOS. Especially since all its worst damage is self-inflicted. Then you remember it's a murderous AI and all the pity evaporates.

And then Derpy Hooves shows up4.

Verdict: Harmlessly amusing. Keep.

The Handbook of Central 46: Captain's Edition

By: DreamerAngel17
This set of rules has been written from observation of the acts and behaviors of the captains of the Thirteen Court Guard Squads and shall be held as such, no matter the situation. We don't care what those suspicious sticky notes say.
Rated: Fiction T - English - Humor - Chapters: 13 - Words: 6,150 - Reviews: 171 - Favs: 127 - Follows: 100 - Updated: Jan 2, 2012 - Published: Jun 4, 2011 - id: 7051261

The other Bleach list fic I had. Let's hope it's funnier than the other one.

Review:
Bored. Also, these types of fics are pretty incestuous anyway, but I am annoyed by it aping that other Bleach list fic.

Verdict:

  1. Yes, Party Ponies are a thing. They have party-related Cutie Marks2, are really good at throwing (G-rated) parties, and all of them do impossible things like it's no big deal.
  2. Basically a butt tattoo a pony gets when they realize their purpose in life.
  3. Relatively speaking. It is Portal, after all.
  4. Oh, man, Derpy. That's an entire story all on its own, and I'll think I'll wait on that bit of fandom lore until I have a space bigger than this footnote to tell it in.

Yeah, Lucilia's stuff does tend to change from good to okay to cringe worthy with little warning, overall s/he does write some good stuff but every now and again you just have to walk away from what was otherwise a promising story.

I'd been wondering if there was a connection.
Lupin III is basically an unauthorized continuation fic of the Arséne Lupin story by Monkey Punch, which was allowed because Japan at the time has far less strict copyright duration than Europe and the US.

However, this led to the release of many Lupin III stories in the US and Europe being tied up in knots. They were released as stories of a gentleman thief called the "Wolf" in the meantime until Maurice Leblanc's copyright expired, which was only... very recently? Can't exactly recall when it was.

But yeah, Lupin III is a fanfic of a Sherlock Holmes fanfic, and one with massive continuity issues to boot. :p

That sounds less like a case of s/he, and more like a case of they. It could easily be a shared account.
