Talent for the saber is what gives these insights. Why take a spear if she doesn't have a talent for it?
Spears are much easier to learn. Also she has a talent for the saber, but that's from some random dude not some heaven shaking genius. Think more saber focused random cultivator, less actually skilled character. It's entirely possible she's just as talented with the spear as this guy was with the saber.

Other things being equal, a spear is an amazing weapon. It keeps all those loonies who believe that The Sword Is The Only True Weapon out of poking range, and does a good quarterstaff impersonation, as well. Is usable in a confined space. As a last resort, it can sacrifice itself as a shield. And, having a sharp bit on the end of a long stick, to poke things with - a useful thing to have.

Not got as good a range as a javelin, but you can throw a spear. This can sometimes be a life-saver. And, 'Set Spear vs. Charge', rarely healthy for the charger. A spear is the preferred weapon for fighting most animals, too. If metal is short, a spear-head uses less resources than a sword. Cheaper to repair, too.

"Spear and Magic Helmet", might be noted, too. :)

No -- talent makes it easier to acquire but no amount of talent can make up for practice and spiritual enlightenment.

That takes work no matter how you look at it. With her lacking Body Cultivation ability and the desire to go full battle junky, she might as well use whatever weapons she thinks will be suitable to her preferred style of applied spellwork.

She should look into finding some really talented but evil body cultivator. Even if it won't be her main focus body cultivation is very useful even if just for the survivability.

No anti theft devices on your ride in a cultivation world? Yeah, I'm guessing mommy and daddy's reputation was the anti theft device. Ganbare meriwen.
Yeah, that only works if a) you fucking introduce yourself, b) if your family is actually that famous and you're not just a toad in a well, and c) just kidding, everyone's a toad in a well in this genre, for there is always a heaven beyond the heavens. Like, there's sometimes an actual max level being, but in this setting I'm pretty sure it's Azathoth.

You know, I think that what might be the most interesting style of magic the the parents can get from Nirn would be Restoration. Elder Scrolls Conjuration and necromancy aren't very useful most of the time but Restoration has many uses. It also, in some of the games, has the attribute draining spells. So even has attack spells that probably count as yin aligned. Even if Merildwen might not be the most talented at it she should still learn it. It also has anti undead spells, very useful if she ever loses control of her undead. Probably yang aligned though, so poor affinity. Still better to have than not.

That's the logic of someone not currently living in a Xianxia world.

All Elder Scrolls magics are incredibly useful. Necromancy literally has an example of a guy becoming straight up god.

Conjuration is different flavors of planar gates and overlaps put together. Bound weapons literally pull on entities from semi-platonic planes and turn them into weapons and armor. Summoning does basically the same but allows the entities to act in a more autonomous fashion. And the more powerful and experienced you are the stronger entities you can bind or make contracts with. You can also create gates into other planes and from them to material world. It's an incredible discipline from start to finish no matter what level you are at.
You start by conjuring sturdy equipment and end by donning concepts of Impenetrability and Destruction while shifting through worlds.

Necromancy on the other hand is manipulation of the soul. And if you can't see how that is a power play in xianxia I don't know what to say to you. Binding, swapping, keeping, cutting and using souls is necromancer's bread and butter. In extreme you get an analogue to a demonic cultivator or slaughter artists from Cradle - who get stronger by consuming the souls of their opponents or adding them to their power in more indirect ways. Though D&D Necromancy also can do it but in more indirect ways until something like 8-9 spell levels.

Hence most of the time. The guy who became a god is basically the best necromancer ever. It would be like expecting everyone who makes a deal with the incubators to become a god. When that's not what happens in the vast majority of cases, even the ones who do really well.

Problem is the planes here are completely different.

Merildwen still can talk to her parents. That is more than enough connection to pull at least some tricks until she manages to adapt. And a new approach to achieve similar results would already be a boon even if she needs to trawl a new set of planes to find what works the best for different purposes.

Just basic Soul Trap would be extremely useful. Since in xianxia such effects are normally way higher level an harder to deploy.

Would be very useful yeah.

If she starts being able to summon things from the Elder Scrolls universe that means she has dimensional travel. On an extreme scale. I don't think she's getting that for a long time.

Not exactly. Daedra aren't really physical per se which is why you can turn them into armor. So until she becomes Immortal she most likely won't be able to utilize it herself. Though she may be able to push ghosts through.

So, you need to really believe in your spear? Do tricks like spinning it to create an effect as if a solid shield?

Or, do you need to load your pokes up with all the yin energy, blow trenches that go all the way to the horizon, and hope the sword wonks try and tank your attack, not dodge?

EDIT:

Or frozen/vitrified/turned-to-stone/yin-ified, all way to...

No. Blowing trenches to the horizon is yang aligned.

However, the Five Phase Method claimed to be a method by which such a thing was both possible and beneficial. It was also a prerequisite to casting any "spells." None of which were

Could I practice it, with already being a wizard? It was worth a try, I supposed.
While doing a re-read, I found this gap in the story where something seems to be missing. It's pretty early on, so I don't know if you want to go back and fix it now, but I figured I should let you know about it.

Time for the most useful spell for keeping players on plot. Speak with Dead returns, last used on a stupid chancellor

Dunno, 'Reincarnate As Small Furry Critter' has it's appeal... Might even give you an Animal Sidekick till you figure-out a way to give them access to a more useful body... The 'Woodland Goddess' (She Who Approves Of Goats) would likely think this a Good Idea(tm). Pity I don't believe this is a spell Our Hero has access to...

(Find a Mysterious Spell-scroll with this on, written in a DnD-ish language? Gods can be helpful!)

(Why is this particularly naughty? Well, in this setting, are you messing with their (potential) progression to Higher Realms???)

Don't know if SpiraSpira is aware but there is a YouTube channel with the name "hogfell" posting all of his? her? stories there for anyone interested in listening to the audio version. Just be aware that the voiceover is done by one of the less egregious AI voices in conjunction with the guy himself. Of course there is also the possibility of him taking SpiraSpira's work without permission but he at least claims to have asked for it.

Might it be worth thinking about 'Journey to the West' as an example of who might travel in this world? So many things based on this story, including Son Goku of 'Dragon Ball' (1984), and 'Monkey' (tv series, 1978), both of which are quite fun.

Some of the Young Masters meeting Monkey/Son Goku... could be entertaining. :)

"Look! That fool is only armed with a staff! How could he stand-up to a true swordsman!"
(Ruyi Jingu Bang - how could 8tns of god-sourced shape-shifting iron staff be dangerous? :) )

Technically Riyu Jingu Bang was just an over-designed ruler used to measure the depth of the flood waters

It being durable as hell, heavy as fuck and size changing was just lucky for Son
