Crystalwatcher's Base Commander Quest (CMGQ Spinoff)

Well, if nothing else, the soldiers will be more professional.

And in any case, the soldier will have more experience.

Magical girls tend to be better than groups of soldiers in the long run, in terms of power levels.

In terms of experience, veteran soldiers are generally more seasoned than magical girls.

An MG is still supported by a squad of soldiers, however.

That doesn't really say much.

better reference would be Team ROUND TABLE, I think. Most soldiers don't have super abilities on their sheets.

So we have two options, option one is a older sister with little experience with running a military encampment, but can quickly learn on the job and comes with little connections, prejudice, can be coerced by gov officials, and magical artillery in the form of the magic girl.

Vs.

The old solder, a man who has been there, done that, and got the tshirt, and has some predetermined prejudice, and in politics, no one will mess with, elite soldiers, and military base management. He has seen some things, and knows that there is never enough DAKKA.

This is a very difficult choice. The old solder, is well old, he might die on us at any time. The older sister has a much higher chance of dying by monsters and the like, than old age. So either the experienced and grizzled war vet, or the young idealist. I will see more on this, but this is a very difficult decision.

Yup, my thoughts exactly. Both are equally valid options.

That's why I instead voted on the logic of "we already having two quests in this universe staring people who are brand new to the military's command structure, so let's get a veteran's perspective so that we can see something different".

The average squad of Human soldiers is five of these guys:

(Unified Light / Counter Force) Human Super Heavy Infantry

Stats
Health: 500
Base Damage: 250
Base Resilience: 100
Magic Modifier: N/A
Affinity: N/A
Weapon

Anti-Demon Rifle
Attacks Per Turn: 1
Affinity: Holy
Ability: Full Auto
Abilities
Elite Soldiers
-Human Infantry will automatically seek to synchronize their attacks against opposing targets of sufficient strength.

Finest Hour
-Human Infantry are immune to Fear effects, and have their Base Damage tripled against an enemy that is under a mental hindrance, such as Fear or Confusion.

Just to see how effective they can be, take a look at how well Team GEAR did during the battle at New York before they started to really show how badass they are/were and were just another set of random soldiers. Take away plot armor and Magical Girl support, then you have what the average squad of Human soldiers are capable of.

Magical Girls, either new, or low on the totem pole of power levels, tend to have a squad of these guys backing them up during a fight. There's a reason that Humans, while outnumbered by literally everybody, are still respected as one of the strongest races.

I was eyeing the other quest from time to time, though never dared to actually read it. I hope one does not have to have experience with the previous work, and this one will be self-sufficient.

Actually, we have 22 votes so far. Did the in-built tally act up?

Edit: must be the timestamp.

The comparison between the MG and the human soldiers depends partly on how experienced she is, and on whether the comparison is being made right now or averaged over the near future. If she's a newbie, as the flavor suggests (but does not guarantee), then she would need to be at least Myth, probably higher, to equal a normal squad of human [super heavy] infantry right now, and the Old Soldier's troop was described as "elite". If she has a few weeks/months of experience, or if she starts off weaker but will get stronger than the elite troops, a lower Growth Affinity is possible. We should also note that their strengths lie in different areas; a Magical Girl may have less direct power than infantry but be more useful due to exotic bullshit. And that MGs grow faster than most other things.

Some more things to consider which haven't been mentioned yet:

—If we choose the Older Sister, then we'll need to specifically protect our little sister—losing her might not be Game Over, but it would likely be bad (and even without mechanical effects, I don't think the players would be inclined to risk her). The Old Soldier also mentions a son, though he might not be with us and may be less devastating to lose (the Old Soldier has probably dealt with a fair amount of loss over his career, and his son's probably not as cute as the little sister).

—The Old Soldier has done a lot, and in particular was at Hope, and in the CMGQ universe that gets you stuff like this:
Veteran of Hope
-Commander Mason has seen the death of Hope, and the end of the Golden Age of Magical Girls. As such, he has been rendered a hard man in an unforgiving world. But even then, he remembers the Hero that saved them all. Commander Mason is immune to Overwhelming Presence. If present during a battle all opposing regenerative effects are reduced by 50% in effectiveness. When giving combat commands, his purely human soldiers gain 150% increased damage, 150% increased Resilience, and become immune to mind-altering effects such as fear or sleep. All Magical Girls under his command during battle gain the ability 'Cataclysmic Light' which allows them to fire off spells more than once per turn as well as synchronize spells that would otherwise be incompatible.

—Whoever we pick, we know that (i) we were Command's second choice for this post; (ii) we did not have sufficient connections to prevent us from being tied up and tossed in the back of a truck; (iii) our previous post—or possibly employment, given that the first paragraph says "recruitment"—was not important enough to save us from this. Or maybe not on (i) and (ii), it could just be our superior's idea of a joke.

—We are being deployed to the Valhallan front, and will be allied with the Valkyr. Searching CMGQ for "Valhalla" turns up this (nothing on Valkyries):
Heaven and Hell have been enemies since before they formed from prayers and broken promises. Even now, their legions clash with fevered force across the fields of Valhalla. Once the realm of glorious warriors, where the Norse Gods would bring the greatest of heroes in preparation of Ragnarök. Though the souls of those legendary few do not rest upon these shores, it does not mean that Ragnarök has not come.
Not sure what this means in practical terms, though. Our choice might influence their opinion of us? Maybe someone else can infer something useful.

No overall preference, so… *flips coin*

[x] The Older Sister

green=additions, red=deletions, yellow=replacements, blue=other

Good morning, Commander.
Ranks, titles and nicknames are all capitalized, and there's a comma when addressing someone by name. The latter may be intentional for tone.
You had been using "them", why the switch? (if you change it, "him" appears again later in the same sentence)
Good luck, Commander.
Lack of comma may be intentional.
mortals like your self
where any other man would quit, you're still going.
I'm not sure whether this is technically grammatically correct (tenses can be tricky) (there's at least one definitely grammatically valid way to parse it, but that doesn't mean what you intended), but in any case I think you meant "would have quit".

There are some other errors/oddities (e.g. "Sadly, though, we haven't seen them since"), but they're all reasonable for dialogue.
