Crimson Aria (Arpeggio of Blue Steel)

It's not just that; I got the new tankobon here with me, and in Chapter one, Iona mentions that the ship they're fighting (the Nagara) as being a 'standard Fog light cruiser', and specifically notes that it cannot submerge.

And now, in the newest chapter, both Vampire and Yukikaze (which are destroyers, note) are seen motoring along underwater. Wha?

could be a translation issue... much like how the modern JMSDF calls all ships 'something Destroyers' - their frigates are called Destroyer Escorts for example.

Snip 11
hey - something plot relevant happens this time! I'm as surprised as you are!
-----

The calm afternoon atmosphere was shattered quite thoroughly by the crack of a plasma cannon discharge. Richardson bolted upright, shocked out of the doze he hadn't even realized he'd fallen into by the thunder-like crack of the energy blast. Augusta was nowhere in sight.

"South Dakota" a tinny, artificial voice boomed from somewhere off-coast. "Hand over the human for processing and containment. Failure to comply will be treated as a hostile act."

"Alright, alright." A more normal voice that Richardson had trouble placing since it didn't sound like seven kinds of pissed off. "No need to shout." Dakota stepped around a curve in the beach, scanning around for a moment before catching sight of him and starting in his direction. "Sorry human - vacation's over. Time to go."

Richardson backpedaled. "You can't seriously plan on handing me over, can you?"

"Its that or get blasted by my own kind." Dakota replied calmly as she grabbed Richardson's arm. He fought momentarily, but her grip was like a vice. "And I don't even like you anyway."

"They're going to kill me!" Richardson pointed out, panicking.

Dakota shrugged. "Probably. Only reason I didn't kill you was because you helped one of mine. But that's as far as it goes. As you humans say - end of the line."

"South Dakota," the voice boomed again. "Hand over the human at once. Failure to comply will be met with force."

"I'm moving, I'm moving." Dakota shouted back. "Don't know why they're shouting. They could just open a tactical net line and be done with it."

"Wait," Richardson stopped struggling for a moment. "Say that again."

"They're communicating via vocal protocols instead of over the network." Dakota explained. "No idea why. Maybe they just like the sound of their own voice." She stopped as she reached a spot of the beach across from the new ships. Both looked like destroyers or maybe light cruisers - Richardson couldn't tell. He was too busy trying to think of a way to not die. "Okay, here he is - send something to come get him."

"This is your final warning." The voice boomed again. "turn over the captured human at once."

"He's right here you idiot!" She yanked Richardson up and shook him a little for emphasis. "For the love of..." She murmured for a moment, but suddenly went silent a look of confusion crossed her face. "Odd."

Richardson groaned. "Please don't say odd. I've had enough odd for a lifetime or three."

"They don't even have an open Network channel." Dakota replied. She glanced at Richardson, who simply looked confused, and she let out an exasperated sigh. The way she did it made Richardson think it was something she did quite a bit. "It means the only way I can communicate with them is vocally. It the Fleet equivalent of putting your fingers' in your ears and going 'lalalala' - which make's no sense."

Richardson paled. "It does if they don't care about your answer."

On que, the new ships cracked around the seams, weapon systems unfolding out. "Negotiations failed. Cleared to engage."

Dakota stared for a moment at the two ships, surprise evident on her face. "Mother pus bucket..."

A lance of Plasma lanced across the waters at where they stood, only to splash across what Richardson was quickly starting to think of as a 'bubble shield" while Dakota pushed him to the ground, and out of the way. "Augusta, Witchita!" she shouted, though Richardson was guessing she was using the Tactical Net. "Two hostiles in section 12C, half-way out of the boundary zone. Unknown class and they're already weapons free."

"Wah?" Richardson could hear Wichita, her voice warped like it as coming from a speaker phone. "What did they want?"

"Augusta's pet," Dakota replied. "And stop using vocal protocols! Just get over here and get rid of these guys for me. I'm stuck protecting the monkey."

"Aye Aye!" On cue, a purple beam of energy lanced across the water, crashing into the side of one of the offending vessels and blooming into a massive fireball. A moment later, Wichita's hull sliced into view, cannons blasting away as her targets brought up their shields.

"Huh" Richardson adjusted his glasses as he watch the Cruiser attack the hostile vessels. "She appears to just be whaling on them...."

"She does like to stretch a fight out when she has the chance." Dakota noted idly. "But we don't. Time to unlimber."

Richardson cocked an eyebrow. "Don't you mean limber up?"

A small smirk crossed Dakota's lips. "No," From the water's in front of them, the massive form of the Battleship South Dakota rose, water sluicing off her decks as weapon systems powered up, cannons extended and missile cells cracked open as the nine massive guns brought themselves the bear. "Unlimber."

And in our darkest hour, a light of hope.

Let's just hope the 57th manga chapter doesn't get delayed for weeks for no reason...

Nifty! Glad to see this is still ongoing.

Is Richardson trying to communicate with home? A radio perhaps, or it wouldn't surprise me if any land lines that existed were still there. Heck, even a message written out in the sand for satellites to pick up could work.

Also, I find it hard to believe that everyone was evacuated from Bermuda. Even ignoring that some people would refuse to leave, some kind of intelligence station makes sense, even if it's just some crazy hermit with a radio.

And is Magical Detective Yue still ongoing? I noticed the link in your sig is no longer active.

1) he didn't bring anything with him, and nothing he had would be getting coverage anyway.

2) Whether or not Everyone was evacuated doesn't really matter. Nobody offically lives on the island at this point. any hermits are completely out of contact with the rest of the world and won't be going near what amounts to a Fog Fleet base.

3) Yes - just rewriting it.
