[X] Plan: A Nice, Simple Breakfast
"Well, maybe I'd be happier if she'd stop bugging me, after I've repeatedly told her that I don't find her insinuations amusing." You try to tell yourself that it's just Kirika trying to comfort you, trying to show you some semblance of normalcy in the wake of something so terrible happening yesterday. You wish she'd comfort you and show you some normalcy in a way that didn't irritate you. "Still, if she was kind enough to give us this time together, I suppose we'd be foolish not to make at least some use of it." Madoka smiles and leans in, accepting your invitation to kiss you. You do, for a few moments which feel like an eternity, but eventually you have to break away from Madoka. She looks disappointed. "While that was a nice way to start my day, I... Meant what I said a bit more literally. We should make use of the time we have for something constructive."
"Kissing isn't constructive?" Madoka asks, feigning hurt that you don't want to kiss her. Well, of course kissing Madoka is constructive. Just, not the sort of constructive you're thinking about right now. "I understand." You roll your eyes and relent, leaning in to give Madoka another brief kiss. She giggles, and asks you "So, what should we be doing, then?"
"Ideally, if we have the time, we should be practicing," you say. "I know, it's not as fun as kissing, but it's ultimately more useful to us in combatting the threat we're facing than the-" As much as you hate to say it, "-momentary pleasure we'll get from kissing one another." You're sure you can find time in-between practicing to kiss Madoka, but you'd like to focus on practicing your more important things first, before you practice using your tongue in Madoka's mouth. "If you'll let me..."
From there, you lead Madoka gently through some practice exercises for her rune. You're unharmed, so you can't lead her through any healing exercises, but from what you saw yesterday of her working with Oriko, what she needs isn't practice with it, but experience using it in a practical capacity. She's fine enough at healing things with her rudimentary knowledge of Uruz, but it'll take time to get good at what she can do. Maybe, if you invite Oriko back for a second round of healing for Lena Kloss, she can lead Madoka again and that'll give her another opportunity to use Uruz practically. So instead, you try to lead Madoka through another one of Uruz's applications, enhanced endurance. You try to lead Madoka through practice, the way Archer taught you to use basic Reinforcement. It's difficult, having few ways of testing something's endurance short of breaking it, so you start with something simple, something made from brittle ice from your own rune. "Now, just concentrate on making it stronger," you say, as each time you let your chunk of ice fall to the ground after Madoka's attempt.
"Is this really working?" Madoka asks, as your third chunk of ice falls to the floor. There's going to be a wet puddle on the floor of your bedroom that someone will need to clean up. It should be you. You're the one making the mess in the first pace. Amy, once the thumping and shattering of ice as it hits the floor stopped staring her, has poked her head out from under your bed, and is licking at the nearest shard of ice. She scoots back under your bed as the next one falls, seemingly less emboldened to the commotion than she thought. "Because it doesn't seem to be working."
"Just give it time," you remind Madoka. You place a hand atop hers, and try to guide her movements as she practices again. "Just take it slow, and remember that there's nothing wrong with not getting it the first time. I didn't get Reinforcement the first time." Madoka didn't get the healing aspect of Uruz the first time, either. It took several practice sessions - as well as, by her own account, several practical attempts made healing herself You can't believe you let Madoka hurt herself - for her to get it. So, you resolve to give Madoka the time she needs to get it right, even just by a little bit, and to that end you say to Kirika "Hey, do you think you could give us a few more minutes? We're kind of in the middle of something."
"Sis, I can give you and Pinkie however long you need," Kirika responds. When at first, she doesn't ask what you and Madoka are up to, you think she's really going to respect your privacy. But then, Kirika strikes. "I'll just stay in the shower and-" Your brain needs to hear what Kirika says next so little that you feel your mind actively refusing to register what she says next. "-while I talk to Oriko. Man, can you believe we didn't know we could do this until we met you and Tomoe? Seriously, that's months we could have spent thinking dirty thoughts to each other! I can't believe I put up with just using pictures she'd send me for as long as I did!"
You're going to hurt your sister. You'll thank your sister when you start thinking dirty thoughts into Madoka's mind when you're apart from her. Shut up you're already giving her this much. "Thank you for the... Enlightening, commentary. Please leave me alone now. I'll let you know when we're done."
When you and Madoka finish - or rather, when you feel that Madoka has made sufficient progress for her first attempt - and you've given yourselves enough time for breakfast, you mentally gesture to Kirika that it's time she can come back. "Now I warn you," you say to Madoka as the both of you finish up, and you prepare her for what's to come, "Kirika... Has a habit of changing... Right in front of me." Madoka's face goes red at the thought. You can only shrug. "I'm used to her... Antics, by now, but I wanted to give you fair warning before she comes in and-" Kirika strides into your bedroom, her towel draped over her body in such a way as to conceal the tattoo on her shoulder. -"And does that." You and Madoka both look away as your sister changes, right there in the middle of your bedroom. But she's not changing into her school uniform, but rather into casual clothes: her school uniform shirt and the faded black jeans she's taken to wearing in the colder months. "So..." you say to Kirika. "Do I even want to ask?"
"About what me and Oriko said to each other while I was in the shower?" Kirika responds. "Nah, probably not. But I'm gonna tell you anyway." After a brief bout of "Lalalala I can't hear you"-ing to your sister - whom Madoka later says was only speaking gibberish in a deliberate attempt to provoke you - Kirika stops, though with a very visible and almost audible roll of her eyes. "But seriously, you two have fun while I was gone?" She wiggles her eyebrows, adding "Make good use of that extra time?"
"Hopefully," you say as you look to Madoka, who smiles, practically glowing. "I helped Madoka through some practice with the rune she's been learning, so hopefully she's gotten something valuable out of the time."
Kirika groans, an act which causes Madoka to break out into laughter. "Sis! You two were supposed to use that extra time to do sexy stuff together! Kiss! Touch each other! All that naughty stuff mom doesn't like it when me and Oriko do! Not... Not stuff that's actually useful! Come on!"
"We had fun," Madoka says, once she finally stops laughing at the way Kirika is protesting. "You and Oriko-chan have fun in your own way, and me and Homura-chan have fun in ours."
Actually, speaking of Oriko and your sister and naughty things, you decide that, now that Kirika is out of the shower, now might be a good time to get in touch with her. Hopefulyl she's finished up, seeing as Kirika is here and is dressed and isn't in the shower distracting her with dirty thoughts. "Oriko, I hope you've had an... Enjoyable, morning, but there's something serious I need to talk to you about."
"Goodness, whatever could Kirika have done to get herself in trouble so soon after we'd finished talking?" Oh so that's what they're calling it now? Talking? You don't press Oriko. "No, it's nothing Kirika's done. It's actually about Lancer. I was wondering if, based on what she's reported back to you about the stakeout she led last night, you might have a course of action to suggest."
"Ah, I see. That certainly is better than hearing Kirika's gotten herself in trouble as soon as we'd finished speaking." She's still going with that, is she? It's okay, You actually appreciate Oriko attempting to spare your feelings, rather than frontloading her raunchiness onto you the way Kirika does. Even if you already know what she and your sister talked about. "Based on what I've seen, I think it would be prudent to wait until Hashimoto makes a move," Oriko says. "True, we know the building she's staying in - or we can at least assume it to be her building, unless Franziska has tricked us better than we think - but I don't know how safely we could move in to capture her. From the way Tomoe-san described her strength, I worry that, in attempting to take her, she might be incentivised to cause either property damage, or kill innocents who might be in her way. On top of which, our servants are all... Considerably powerful. That's a good thing, but at the same time I worry for their ability to perform in the specific conditions they'd be under, without it potentially putting lives at risk."
"So, we wait for Hashimoto to make the first move, then we get her once she's outside and in a better position to be dealt with without risking civilian lives," you reiterate Oriko's thoughts.
[ ] And you agree with Oriko
[ ] But you don't agree with Oriko
With that taken care of, you, Madoka, and Kirika finally decide that you've had enough and you all migrate into the kitchen, where Archer is just about finishing up with breakfast, its delicious scent - even something as simple as rice and grilled fish almost smells delicious when your father cooks it - calling the three of you out of hiding and towards where the food is. Mom still looks downcast from when you and Kirika left her, and the both of you before sitting down at the table take a moment to give her a hug. Conversation is light around the table, mostly limited to trying to think of ways to talk aroud yesterday's tragedy, or- "So, Homura, did you enjoy having Madoka stay over?" asks mom, looking at you with the kind of eye she usually only gives to Kirika. "I noticed she didn't have a place set out for her on the couch this morning. I hope you two were behaving yourselves."
You nod your head, and thankfully Kirika is there to confirm. "They were fine~ mom," she says, letting her voice drawl a bit longer on the word "Fine" than necessary. "Seriously, just 'cause me and Oriko get in trouble doesn't mean sis and Pinkie are like that."
Mom eyes Kirika, as if she doesn't believe her for one second. When it comes to Kirika, anyone would be hard-pressed to believe here where that is concerned. "Then maybe you can explain why I caught them, kissing with the door closed?"
Kirika freezes up, unsure of what to say next. "Uh, maybe 'cause kissing the person you love feels really good?" is the best she can offer; "And, they probably closed the door 'cause they wanted some privacy? It's not the worst thing in the world to want some privacy in your own home." Mom doesn't say anything, she just sounds off with a bit of disappointment.
You decide to take the initiative, asking her "So, mom... I, um..." You really have no idea how you want to ask this. SO you decide to just get it out there, and hope mom understands. "How do you talk to children?" Mom looks at you. "I mean, I've got those... Familiars, that look like my friends. My witch says they're more like daughters to me than my other familiars, and... And I want to learn how to communicate with them better. But... Well, I guess I don't really know the first thing about how I'm supposed to talk to little kids. So I was hoping you might be able to share some insight into how you handled Kirika when she was younger."
"Oh, sweetie," mom sighs. "For one, I think we both know that your sister is hardly the model either of us should be using." Kirika beams with pride as mom insinuates that she doesn't listen to what she's told. "But, some general tips, at least as far as I've read when it comes to talking to kids, is to keep things simple. Especially when your kids are more like... Like the way they are. Don't try to give them complex orders if you've got them with you on a mission, and make sure you're being clear with what you're saying to them. Getting down to their level also helps: Remember, they're small, and you're not. They're more likely to listen if you get down to their level and try to connect with them first."
You nod your head, doing what you can to internalise your mother's advice. But it's hard, because "I don't really understand them when they speak to me. I'm not even completely sure they understand when I speak to them." You're sure there is some sort of connection between them and yourself, on some level, but it's hardly a level you understand more often than not. It's so confusing. Why couldn't your children just be normal?
"Do you know if they speak Japanese?" mom asks. "From what I understand, didn't you only... Create? Birth? Whatever? Then, a few months ago?" Mom looks to your sister, a smile on her face as she adds "Kirika took longer than that before she started talking. Just give them time. Talk to them more. Try to teach them some basic Japanese. Kids are trying to talk to us from the moment they're born. Just give them, and yourself, some time, and eventually you'll figure out what they're trying to say." Still smiling, mom adds "You know, before Kirika started talking, she-" Now, it's Kirika's turn to be faced with someone else's embarrassing speech, as she desperately tries to pretend like mom isn't talking about all the cute noises and gestures she'd make to communicate when she was a baby. "Oh, and you and Madoka can feel free to tell all this to Oriko, if you'd like," mom says. Her gentle smiles grows sly, as she adds "Kirika can think of it as payback for all the times she's bragged to you about the details of their relationship."
