Day 15 Chapter 20
[X] Plan: Counting on you, Sis!

You spiders unleash their payload of icy bullets, and you join in, invoking your rune of ice as Oriko says commands "Light them up, Lancer!" as her servant sends a torrent of flame into the kill-zone your party has set up. All seems to be going well- You see your spiders being blasted at with bullets of ice- Their own bullets of ice? Before you can comprehend what's going on, you see your own wall of ice being thrown back in your face, Lancer's own flames shot back at her, and if it weren't for Oriko and Lancer throwing up defensive barriers to block your own rebounded attacks, you would have been frozen, and Oriko and Lancer would have been incinerated. Your vision is whited out by the thick wall of ice that's frozen over Oriko's barrier, but when the wall breaks as Oriko's barrier shifts itself around in anticipation of an incoming attack, you see that the slimes, which had previously been blue, are now a glossy, metallic silver.

"Well..." Kirika drawls. "That's not good." Tomoe-san and Oriko are both silent, while Lancer steels herself and adopts a ready stance. "So, uh, how do we deal with these things now?"

"If magic attacks won't work on them," Oriko says, "Then we'll just have to hit them with physical ones." Oriko looks down at her own hands, wholly unsuited to dealing physical blows, and she says to Kirika "I... May not be the best-suited to carrying out my own ideas, though." Oriko turns to Tomoe-san, to Kirika, and to Lancer, and she says "Akemi-san and I will be counting on you three to get the job done."

"Okay!" Kirika shouts enthusiastically. "Oriko's counting on me!" Your 'command' soldier looks at you with an expression that you might charitably call confusion as Kirika springs up and steals a kiss from Oriko, and it's all you can do to shrug, because that's just how your sister is. Kirika draws in deeply, drinking in Oriko's mana before tearing herself away, Soul Gem shining brightly. "All right!" she shouts again as she readies claws in each hand. "Now I'm all fired up, I've got Oriko watching me, and I'm gonna do this all by myself!"

As Kirika throws herself forward into the wall of slimes before her, you and Oriko both turn your attention to Tomoe-san and Lancer, and you hear Oriko say to them "Do make sure Kirika doesn't get herself seriously hurt, won't you?"

Lancer wordlessly nods her head, setting aside her rune of flame and bringing up her massive spear, while golden ribbons snake their way around Tomoe-san's arms and legs. "Don't worry, Mikuni-san," Tomoe-san announces as her ribbons take the form of armoured gauntlets and greaves. "I'd never let anything happen to one of my adorable juniors." Tomoe-san winks before throwing herself into the fray as well, and you see the bemused lookk on Oriko's face at Tomoe-san's words. You aren't sure if it's funny because Tomoe-san has been a puella magi for longer than Kirika, or because Kirika is a few months younger than Tomoe-san and just barely slips past the cutoff date of being Tomoe-san's oldest 'junior' in terms of age.

Being ill-suited to physical attacks yourself, you are forced to sit back and watch alongside Oriko as Tomoe-san, Kirika, and Lancer make marginally more successful attempts at damaging the slimes than your previous attempt. Actually, it's a lot better than just marginal successes. A wound-up punch and a cry of "Turbina Dinamo!"sends one of the reflective slimes flying with a burst of wind. It crashes against the bank of the river, not shattering, but rather splattering like jelly before reforming itself. A swipe from Kirika's claws cleaves one slime into four thin slices, before she brings her other hand sideways and slices four into eight - sixteen, however many, you can't pay attention to how fast Kirika's hands are moving - smaller pieces still. Seeing no central 'core' inside the slime, Kirika settles for stamping her foot against the largest share of slime, though you see her quickly regret doing that wen the largest share reflects her stomp back to her and she's forced to hobble away in momentary pain, before you see the telltale steeling that accompanies the shutting off of her body's pain receptors.

"Make sure to give that foot some attention when we're done," you say to Oriko, who you're sure is already planning on it. "Um, I'll try to give you two some privacy when we get back so you can give her some other attention." You don't mean what you're sure mom would think you mean by that. You just mean, you want to give them some privacy to kiss while Oriko is working.

"Think nothing of it," Oriko replies. She's still doing what she can to corral the slimes into kill zones for Tomoe-san and Kirika, but Lancer doesn't seem to need luxuries like that. She brings her spear down, and its massive size, combined with the clustered nature of the swarm of slimes, ensures that she hits something when she swings it. Then, you see something stir in Lancer's eyes. You wonder what she's thinking of, even more so when- "Lancer, what are you doing?" Oriko sees it first, Lancer invoking her rune of fire- That's not fire. You see Lancer invoke the rune Tiwaz, as moments later a chorus of steel shoots up from underneath the wall of slimes. It's the sort of move you've grown used to seeing from Assassin, so seeing it from Lancer instead, whom you've always seen use flames as her primary rune of attack, is a bit surprising. But it appears surprisingly effective, and that's when Oriko calls out "Kirika! Follow Lancer's lead!"

"Got it!"

You brace yourself for Kirika to do something really, really edgy, but she surprises you, slamming her claws not into her stomach, but into the ground. "Infinite Blades!" she calls out, as Lancer once more invokes Tiwaz. Two seas of blades of all shapes spring up from underneath the slimes, skewering massive hordes of them and leaving them defenceless as Tomoe-san unleashes waves of ribbons, which snake through the field of blades and tear apart the slimes that aren't already disintegrating. "Hey, nice work," Kirika says to Tomoe-san. "But, uh..." Kirika looks to Lancer, and then both of them look to you and Oriko as Kirika asks "How are we supposed to clean all this up?"

You shrug, and respond "Cleanup was never our responsibility before;" and since you're already in trouble with the Mage's Association for coming too close to breaking the masquerade, it's not like one more incident will get you into any more trouble than you already are. "More importantly, are you all right?" you ask Kirika, gesturing to the leg she injured earlier. "That looked like it hurt. Do you think you can make it back home, or do you want Oriko to look at it now?"

"I think I can make it home," Kirika says. She's already standing on the leg uneasily, even with her pain receptors turned off. That rebound must have done more harm than it looked like. "Besides, it's freezing out. Even if it's Oriko, I don't want to take my shoe off and get my foot cold just so someone can look at it." In spite of her protests that she's fine, you don't see Kirika complaining when Oriko offers her a shoulder to lean on. "Thanks," she says to Oriko.

"Think nothing of it, dearest," Oriko responds. Oriko looks to you, and then to Tomoe-san and the Kirika that's currently leaning on her, and she asks "What of the circle Kim stole from the mansion's basement? Did either of you find anything?"

"Yes, we managed to find it," Tomoe-san says. "Unfortunately, it is rather heavy, and neither Kure-san nor myself were able to move it. But we know where it is and can direct someone stronger than us to its location once we've decided where we're going to store it so Franziska's team can't find it."

"There's, uh, there's just one problem," Kirika adds. "That blonde girl? The one who looks like Wakaba and is kinda bitchy? Yeah, she found us wandering around and asked what was up. She saw the circle, too, and got real suspicious about it. I told her to shut up and piss off, but I don't think that'll hold her for long." Tomoe-san nods her head in agreement with Kirika, who adds "I think we're going to have to address whatever this is with the rest of those girls sooner than you might have been hoping to, sis."

Oh, for the love of-
[ ] Where do you want to move the summoning circle?
[ ] What do you do about the blonde girl?
[ ] What do you tell the rest of the girls (if they ask)?
[ ] Other (write-in)

Bit of a short one today, I guess. It's still cold in my office so I couldn't get my fingers to cooperate as much as I'd have liked, but more than that it just wasn't much of a matchup. Between Kirika and Lancer we've got a decent amount of physical firepower at our disposal, so once that was settled it wasn't like the fight was going to last very long. The more important part of this is that Mami and Kirika found the circle, but so did the unnamed blonde girl whom we should probably do something about if she's not going to cooperate. The question is, do we do something about her tonight, or do we wait until tomorrow and deal with her at the same time as anyone who might have questions for us?

[X] Plan: Alright, Plan's Out
-[X] Where do you want to move the summoning circle?
--[X] Just move it into your shield for now. Or if it's too big, just destroy it for now (to an unrecognizable extent) and make a note to get the services of someone else who can make one in the future.
-[X] What do you do about the blonde girl?
--[X] Don't do anything for now except shut her down if she's trying to instigate something. Again, she can always just leave and you will support her, same as anyone else.
-[X] What do you tell the rest of the girls (if they ask)?
--[X] Essentially, the summoning circle is a device used to summon beings known as Servants; if they remember, the man in the read coat with the white hair was one. They are incredibly powerful, and in Mitakihara specifically, there are a couple 'slots' left for someone to take the position. However, Servants can also be an incredible mana drain depending on which one you get, and you wanted to wait until tomorrow so that you can give Servants to anyone who is staying, because you need the advantage and don't want anyone taking one and leaving, and because at this rate with your 'infinite mana hack' if they get stuck with an expensive one then they're essentially going to be forced to stay around Mitakihara until 'Kyubey' finally manages to implement your method into the system.

Oriko made that summoning circle in the first place, and if canon is anything to go by, they are not unique. Couldn't we just make another one? On top of that, we keep forgetting about Homura's shield.

the man in the read coat
Oh shit! Archer evolved from Redman to Bookman? When did that happen? I wasn't aware that Archer wore books for clothes. What happens if Minako decides she doesn't like the book Archer's wearing?

we keep forgetting about Homura's shield.
That's because I remember that one Familiar of Sidonia's that exploded its way out and keep thinking that made it unusable.
How big is "too big"? The summoning circle is, I guess, about as big as the ones we see in Zero and Stay Night, but it's drawn on a big piece of basement concrete. Granted, Homura can manage to fit an entire truck into her shield, but... Just on a logistical basis, how the heck does she lift something that size to put into her shield in the first place?

Whilst you are making jokes, my brain is just stuck remembering about Read or Die and wondering if it was any actual good.

Given that we see it directly next to cardboard boxes in Stay/Night, we can tell that it's about 2X2 large cardboard boxes in size. My first thought is to cut off the bottom so that it's just a circle on a wide slab or something to make it easier to lift, and my second idea is to have Mami use her ribbons like a crane to fit it in. In terms of lifting it, Homura can 100% lift that (canonically, even a physically weak magical girl can lift a stone slab larger than a Human body off herself), though in terms of leveraging it or how she fits those trucks in there, I'm not sure.

I might at least have an answer for her lifting the stone, actually; in-series, experienced magical girls can use enchantment to sort of give themselves 'soft physics'- it's explicitly mentioned in Magia Record that this allows them to wall-run, do wire-fu, and similar stuff, so at least partially ignoring leverage issues is actually in your experienced meguca's toolset. Given that you also agreed that the thing Homura does to drive cars Bayonetta style (riding on top of them with magic) is tactile telekinesis, that ought to also work.

Whilst you are making jokes, my brain is just stuck remembering about Read or Die and wondering if it was any actual good.
Well, I've never heard anything bad about it, so the worst I can say is that it's unremarkable enough to not be hated.

Let's see... I used to work for a guy who did a lot of shipping, and 18" was our largest box size. 2x2 of those would be 36", or three feet in diameter, except... Does size matter? Ryuunousuke makes one that's comparatively minuscule, while the one Waver makes looks like it was big enough to fit Iskandar lying down. Does the size matter?

Theoretically, I think as long as you keep the relative level of detail despite the size, size doesn't entirely matter (maybe it slightly does; perhaps there would be issues with mana flow if you made it too big or small or something). Maybe the bigger ones have more to do with accounting for the creator's lack of relative precision, while smaller ones are by people who are able to make the circle with a lot more rigor in their craft. We know Ryuunousuke is very rigorous in his tortures and has some talent, while Waver is kind of bumbling during his early years (Case Files does imply that he was pretty lacking in motor skills backs then).

Actually, maybe I should go back and see if you ever described the size.
Edit: Apparently you didn't.

Day 15 Chapter 21
[X] Plan: Alright, Plan's Out

"What of the circle Kim stole from the mansion's basement?" Oriko asks. "Did either of you find anything?"

You clamp two fingers against the bridge of your nose, trying to stamp out the headache before it comes. "That ungrateful..." you mutter, cutting yourself off before you say anything worse. You're not at the point of blaming her, not yet: She's just been uprooted from her home and forced to live in a crummy warehouse with five other girls whom she'd probably been fighting with over her city's limited resources just earlier today. Now, she's in unfamiliar territory, surrounded by unfamiliar people, and being asked to cooperate with a total stranger who has power over her for reasons she doesn't understand. She's afraid, and she's afraid of more than just the threat posed by Franziska's team to her city, and she's lashing out. You aren't going to blame her unless she actually starts causing you trouble. "For now, just ignore her," you say. "Don't give her any reason to start trouble with you, and shut her down if you see her trying to start trouble with anyone else. If she decides she really wants to be a problem, we can let her leave and fend for herself, but I'd prefer not to resort to anything drastic just yet."

Kirika nods her head, but you get the feeling she's not done just yet. "Hey, so, I was thinking," she says, looking over to Tomoe-san. "You know how when Wakaba was being a bitch, we let her and Sakura beat the crap out of each other? What if we did the same with this chick? Tomoe's got blonde hair, so maybe if we let them go a few rounds it'll cool her off?"

"Let's not resort to violence just yet."

"Agreed," Tomoe-san and Oriko echo in unison. "But," Oriko says, "We can't just ignore the issues that her knowing about this could cause, either. If she's seen my summoning circle, and decides to tell the other girls that there's even more we're keeping from her, then we're going to have to address that." Tomoe-san and Lancer both nod their heads, and Oriko adds "It might even be in our best interest to get ahead of the rumour mill on this one, especially if you're already thinking of inviting some of those girls to summon servants. Let us be the ones controlling the flow of information to them, rather than a troublesome element like that girl." Oriko shakes her head, muttering "Goodness, it's so hard talking about her without even knowing her name. We can't just keep calling her 'That girl' forever..."

"No, but we can't force her to cooperate, either,"
you mutter in reciprocity. That girls is going to be even more of a headache than Wakaba Mirai was before she straightened her attitude out, isn't she? "In any event, I'd still prefer to take a wait-and-see approach to that girl." As difficult as she's going to make it for you, she is still a human being, and one who's scared, at that. "As for getting ahead of the rumours... If they ask, we tell them the truth. We're already this far down the rabbit hole, there's no reason to hide from them the fact that there's even more magical nonsense out there that isn't covered by our system."

Of course, telling them does pose its own set of concerns: If you tell them -more specifically, if you wait until tomorrow to tell them because you wanted to wait to see who was still staying before deciding to grant any of them the right to fill a particular slot - and any of them agree, then there's going to be stuck as, essentially, vassals of your own operation, at least until Juubey goes ahead and implements the modifications you've proposed to the puella magi system. A servant with an expensive mana draw, saddled to a girl who isn't a part of your circle, going back to her home city where basic resources are in such scarce supply that competition is as fierce as it is... That's not a good combination, and even though you need the additional power, you aren't sure that it's fair to ask as much from these girls. The Pleiades Saints were led astray by Kyubey, and extending your offer to them was necessary to ensure their cooperation against Sidonia. But if you have your system on the table before these girls make their decision, you're going to be obligated to fulfil their needs for as long as it takes.

Four and a half years, Juubey said. Can you really ask complete and total strangers to give themselves to your service for four and a half years before they're able to operate independently once again?

"For now," you say, "Let's just move the circle out of the way so nobody can find it." You'll figure out what to do next after that's taken care of. "Now then," you say to to Tomoe-san and Kirika, "You two said you found where Oriko's circle was?" They nod their heads. "Tomoe-san, lead the way. Oriko, Kirika, try to keep up if you think you can, but don't feel bad if you'd rather head back to my place so you can take a look at Kirika's leg." Oriko nods her head, but with Kirika leaning against her, they soldier on all the same.

Tomoe-san leads you to one of the warehouses towards the back. It's hard to keep track of all of the warehouses in this abandoned park - and seriously, you wonder what used to be here that there'd be so many abandoned warehouses just sitting around like this. What industries did this city used to have that required so many of them? - and it's even harder now that you've got memories of Kim's nonsense clouding your mind whenever you think about this place. You don't recognise this warehouse, or any of the surrounding ones; you just know that it used to be part of Kim's complex. But it's here, all the same, stowed away in some musty corner. You wonder what this building looked like back when Kim was running things here: Was it another one of his workshops? Was it prepared specifically to summon a servant, or was it merely appropriated? Was it another one of his twisting mind puzzles, something that even his own servant had trouble navigating out of? You look to your allies: Tomoe-san, Oriko, Kirika, and Lancer. None of them have any words.

"Tomoe-san, use your ribbons to try and hoist the circle to me," you say as you ready your shield. You've held larger objects before than this metre-wide circle, heavier objects. As long as you can get a good angle, you can feed this circle into your shield. "That'll make it easier to transport than if we have to carry it back like this." On top of giving you a more convenient way of storing the circle until you can decide what to do with it. Though, if you can get a handful of those girls to agree to summon servants for you, it'll probably look mighty strange to them if you suddenly drop a massive round of concrete in front of them from seemingly nowhere.

Slowly, Tomoe-san hoists the circle and the surrounding concrete over towards you, and you direct her to lower it into your shield. Once that's taken care of, you will:
[ ] Send everyone back, recall the team at the train station as well
[ ] You (and anyone else of your choosing) stay behind to
-[ ] Keep watch on this area (or another area of your choosing to move to)
-[ ] Continue working on your secret project
-[ ] Speak to the other girls before the blonde can
--[ ] What do you want to tell them? (write-in)
--[ ] Do you have anything to say to the blonde in particular? (write-in)
[ ] Tell everyone (except Kirika) to return to their previous posts and continue to keep watch
[ ] Other (write-in)

Another short one today, but hopefully there's a bit more of substance we can do after this. Hopefully. I tried to give up a few different options, but as far as what we were voted to do this time there wasn't much room for me to write something much larger than this. As a word of reminder, there isn't like to be an update on Sunday.

[X] Plan: Honest Truth, Staying Up Late
-[X] You (as well as Mami, Lancer, and Archer) stay behind to
--[X] Keep watch on this area in Mami's case, and keep watch of the city in Archer's case
---[X] If any other Servants or members of the Quintet want to or can help in this endeavor, you'd welcome it
--[X] Continue working on your secret project in you and Lancer's case
--[X] Speak to the other girls before the blonde can
---[X] Essentially, explain to them what Servants are, and how you were primarily saving it for whoever decided to stay. You mostly wanted to keep this advantage for whoever was going to stick with you and help you fight, on top of not wanting anyone to accidentally summon one and get stuck with a possible mana drain that might tie them to you for years until Kyubey can implement your 'free energy hack' into the system. You're not going to necessarily force anyone who decides to stay to summon one, mind.
---[X] Even still, you'll admit that you're mostly keeping the other secrets you mentioned about the system a secret so that nobody goes crazy and tries to kill everyone and then themselves if they learn about it while at a low point. Because it has happened. You don't intend to lord this information over them; if they really want, you'll tell them the info before they leave tomorrow and you can even get Kyubey to confirm. You just don't want to light a powder keg with your knowledge here.

Sorry for the late vote. This is what I've got.

Sorry for the late vote. This is what I've got.
Don't worry that it's late. I'm not going to start writing anything until tomorrow anyway, so it's no sweat. What is sweat, however, is when I ask what you've got for what might come next. Assuming we get some people to stick around, what are you hoping for? At the very least, I'm assuming you're hoping for all three "safe" servant slots to be filled, maybe even Assassin if we're not concerned what'll happen to Nightingale or whichever other Assassin gets summoned when Niko moves back to Japan. But beyond that? Who do you hope decides to stick around and be a master, and what class of servant do you think they'd be fit for/that you'd like to see them summon?

I'm personally willing to bet that Tsubaki and Manjoume are the most likely to stick around, and honestly given that they have the most combat ability, I'd be glad to have them. Other than that, I think Nanashi and Nekoyama appeal to me the most out of the list. The available slots are Saber, Archer, Rider, and theoretically Assassin, right? While particulars are hard to figure out for now, probably Saber with Tsubaki (I imagine she probably has the power to foot the cost, and it kinda fits her as a full-frontal fighter), Archer or Assassin for Nekoyama and Oryou (remote action that doesn't require being in the fight, and low mana costs for less stress), Saber or Rider with Manjoume (either high mobility with an absolute tank, or high mobility with even more high mobility for blitzing potential), and Rider with Nanashi (in the hopes of having something odd that plays with her powers).

No idea on Blondie yet. For all I know, she might actually end up being the most loyal of the group, and her frustrations are mostly out of uncertainty and fear. Or that could just be how she is and she might've been one of the worse of the various bullies in her city, and she could turn out exactly how we think she might. Or a thousand other things.

That is, if they decide to go through with it at all.
True that.

I think Nanashi and Nekoyama appeal to me the most out of the list.
I understand Nanashi, if we can make use of her assimilation, but what do you see in Nekoyama? Are you hoping she'll be able to program improvements to our familiars?
The available slots are Saber, Archer, Rider, and theoretically Assassin, right?
Correct. Saber, Archer, and Rider are all safe, while Assassin is only safe for as long as Nightingale remains out of the country. Since both she and any new Assassin summoned would exist as part of the same "block" there's no telling what could happen if both of them were to be in the same place at the same time.
That is, if they decide to go through with it at all.
Well, we can try to guess if they will or not. Juubey said that live tests would be ready in four and a half years. That's roughly summer of 2017. What else happens in summer of 2017 that's relevant to us?

Well there's that, but I also think being able to automate a lot of our searches will allow us to free up a lot of manpower that might be able to go looking for enforcers, and she can handle a lot of nitty-gritty details of battle management, planning, or what have you. She also has a lot of general utility; we could use her to gain funding if absolutely necessary, we could use her to create bulk familiars or the likes, use her to hush up any sort of leaks or recordings or whatever, copy or creating research AI (which, by the way, have existed for a long time) to help us, and if we use runes there's a bajillion combinations we could create with her devices, like that 'Perthro-powered quantum computer' I had theorized about before.

That was when the first Fate/Stay Night Heavens feel movie came out, wasn't it?

That was when the first Fate/Stay Night Heavens feel movie came out, wasn't it?
Was it? I don't remember. At any rate, the events of the Heaven's Feel route already occurred back in 2004, so it wouldn't matter in-universe if a TV studio were making a movie about it. I mean, it would, but it wouldn't be any of our business if the Mage's Association decided to wipe out UFOtable for turning Sakura's autobiography into a mainstream anime movie.

Non-canon omake - Kirika, post-masquerade
"… I'm telling you, we don't need therapy," she heard the voice saying. "There's nothing wrong with our relationship except for the fact that you-"

"If you really thought there was nothing wrong with our relationship, then you wouldn't be blaming me."
The rolling eyes were almost audible, even behind the closed door. She knew how that felt. "Look, we're already here. Just put up with the one session, okay? She came highly recommended by my co-worker for exactly the sort of problem we're having."

Kure Kirika was turning thirty this year. When she made her contract with Kyubey at age fourteen, she never expected that one day she would be thirty, holding down a respectable job with a wife and daughter and three younger siblings and even a sister-in-law, all of whom she loved to pieces. But somehow, she was here. As she waited for the clock in her office to strike three on the dot – the scheduled time when she'd see the couple waiting outside her office door for her – she glanced over to the photograph of her family that sat on her desk. It had been taken recently, just the weekend after Christmas. Yurako – her and Oriko's two-year-old daughter, who would be turning three in April – sat between the two of them on their couch, with Homura and Madoka sitting on either side while mom and dad leaned over the back of the couch. Homura's five children could just barely be seen in the far corner, playing under the Christmas tree rather than participating in the picture. Oriko's cousin Caren – still a nurse at the junior high school all those years later – was the one who took the photograph. Kirika was pretty sure that the elder of her two younger brothers, Kiritsugu, was also playing with Homura's children under the tree, but she couldn't remember why her other younger brother, born just a few months after Yurako, wasn't in the picture. Ah, well, she had others that showed them off. The point was that this was her favourite picture of her and Oriko and Yurako and she loved them both so much.

The clock struck three, and the door opened. Two women walked in, neither one looking to be out of their early twenties. "Hey, good afternoon," Kirika said to the pair as she held out a hand. "I'm Doctor Kure, but you two can just call me Kirika. What're your names?"

Kirika already knew both of their names, but she asked anyway as a courtesy. One of those things Oriko encouraged her to do. Good for her practice's image, and all that. The two women introduced one another – Michiko and Randa – and took seats on opposite ends of the couch. Neither one said anything. Kirika smiled. "Take your time," she said. "There's no need to rush this." As she spoke, Kirika's eyes darted towards the two women's hands, noticing a Soul Gem ring on Michoko's left middle finger, but not on Randa's. She could see the two women looking at her hand as well, but knew they wouldn't see anything. When she and Oriko had gotten married – nine years ago! Kirika couldn't believe she and Oriko had been married for nine years! Since they'd been together for so long before getting married, it often felt like they'd been married for a lot longer – they'd both taken to wearing their rings not on their middle fingers, but their ring fingers. Hey, it saved having to buy a second set of rings when they already had one perfectly good set.

"I thought you said she came 'highly recommended'," said Randa, her eyes half-locked into Kirika's bare middle finger, and half onto Michiko. "What does she even know about you, anyway? She's just a-"

"No, I'm a puella magi too," Kirika said calmly. "When my wife and I got married, we started wearing our rings on our ring fingers." That's what life was like now that the masquerade had broken. You could just come out and say stuff like that. "So, I take it the problem has something to do with that?"

"She's always putting herself in danger!" Randa shouted as she pointed a finger at her partner. "She doesn't care about my feelings at all!"

"How can you sit there and say something so ignorant!" Michiko shouted back. "I have a job, Randa! I have co-workers who are counting on me to watch their backs. I can't just abandon them because you think I'm taking too many risks!"

"Can't you just, I don't know, take it a bit easier or something?"

Michiko sighed at her partner's words, giving Kirika the sense that they'd had this exact conversation countless times in the past. "Sorry," Michiko said to Kirika. "You probably don't need to hear us going at it."

"You're far from the loudest clients I've had," Kirika said, recalling a couple she'd counselled recently where one partner had been using magic to see multiple other women besides her wife. That had not been a fun, or successful, session. "Please, take as much time as you need."

Frankly, Kirika didn't know why it had taken her so long to settle on being a relationship counsellor. She was made for love – she was made for loving one specific personso to take that and turn it into something she could make a career out of was a no-brainer. Being patient with people was the hardest part, in her opinion. She wanted to get down to the nitty-gritty, the part where she could tell her clients that love conquered all and if they'd just get in the sack with each other all their problems would work out, but she knew she had to be patient, and to actually listen to her clients, in order to be successful in her mission of spreading love.

"I'm a professional magical girl," Michiko finally said. "In Atsugi. It's rough over there, and Randa is always worried that I'm putting myself in too much danger with my job. I try to tell her that it's no different from what firemen or policemen do, but…" Michiko bit her lip, adding "I don't want to say she doesn't get it, but like… She's under the impression that what I do is a lot more dangerous than it really is. Like, she's worried that some big huge wraith is gonna come and wreck up the city and I'll die in the line of duty, or something."

"Case in point," Randa responded, "This is Mitakihara. Just look at what happens here, like, every other week! Just think of how risky it is being a magical girl in a city like this! Of course I'm worried about you, Michiko! It's so stupid the way you think you're invincible just because you've got a team to back you up, you're going to get yourself killed one of these days going out there because one day there's going to be something that you and your team can't deal with and then you'll be dead and I'll be left by myself to pick up the pieces! Just find a safer job! Heck, there's lots of jobs out there for retired magical girls, right?" She gestured to Kirika, saying more to her partner than to Kirika "I mean, just look at Dr. Kure! She's a fucking shrink! Think of how much money you'd make doing, I don't know, therapy for retired magical girls, or something! You don't have to put yourself in danger just because you're a magical girl!"

"I'm also an active magical girl," said Kirika, causing the two women to stop bickering and turn their heads, jaws a-gasp. "Have been since I was fourteen. Heck, not to brag but, me, my wife, my little sis, and some of our friends, we are the magical girls who dealt with all the crazy shit that put Mitakihara on the map. Walpurgisnacht? That was us. Sidonia? That was us, too. The Mage's Association? The Kamihama trials? You get the idea. Heck, sometimes, we even get calls from the professional firms in this city to help train their new girls. I'm not doing this 'cause I'm retired, I'm doing this 'cause I love love, and I want to see all the happy couples like yourselves loving one another as much as possible." Kirika smiled, and asked the pair "Now, why don't you start by telling me how you two met?"

"Senior year of high school," Randa said. "We were both in the same club, and it was, like, love at first sight. I didn't learn that Michiko was a magical girl until after we'd graduated. I thought that was so cool, especially once the masquerade broke and she could finally stop hiding it, but then she got a job as a professional magical girl after uni, and, like…" Randa sighed. "Suddenly, she's getting calls at all hours of the night, 'cause her firm's been contracted to deal with some dumb wraith infestation in some dumb abandoned building, or there's some dumb criminal whose using magic to, like, hold up a bank or something, or… Something stupid like that. You know how it goes." Kirika nodded her head, recalling all of the stupid magical nonsense that she'd had to deal with when she was younger than these two girls; "And, I get it, right? Someone has to be the person doing that stuff. That's why we have cops, and firemen, but… But it's different when it's someone else doing it, versus when it's someone I care about putting themselves in danger. Especially when she starts disappearing in the middle of the night, and now every time I wake up and she's not there, it's like, is she just working late on some assignment, and she'll be back in time for breakfast? Or was last night the last time I'll ever see her again, and…"

Randa hung her head, admitting "After a while, I just… I just got so tired of it. I'd tell Michiko, over and over, that she needs to find a new job, that I can't take what she's putting me through any more, and she…"

"The problem is, Randa thinks I can just quit and find a new job easy-peasy," Michiko said. "She's not working at the moment, and it took me months of interviewing – not even specifically for a job as a magical girl, just... You know, anywhere, but I kept getting turned down – before I landed this job. Heck, this job only took me because they found out I'd made my contract back in high school so I already had some experience." Michiko reached a hand out to Randa, and Randa accepted, letting Michiko squeeze it. "Right now, I'm the sole breadwinner between the two of us. I can't quit, but because I've only been at this job for a few months, I can't ask my boss for a better schedule yet. Her more experienced girls all have the regular shifts, so I'm stuck taking the hours nobody else wants. I know it's hard on Michiko, but…"

"But you need the job," Kirika said. Michiko nodded her head; "And you need the peace of mind that comes with knowing your partner is safe." Randa nodded her head. "I know what you're going through. I do. My mom-" Kirika reached for the family photograph on her desk, pointing out Homura to the pair. "-That's her, the one behind the couch who's leaning over me and my little sis, she married my dad, who can use magic. Well, between me and my sis, and dad, mom was always worried sick over the three of us when we'd go out and try to keep the city safe. We never meant to make her feel scared that we weren't being safe, we just… We had a job to do, you know? This was back before the masquerade broke, so it wasn't like we could call a team of pros for backup; no, we had to be the pros, and we had to do it all on our own. But we did it, because somebody needed to keep the city safe."

"So you're taking her side," Randa accused. She stood up, and made like she was leaving, saying "I knew this was a bad idea. I'm leaving-"

"No, I'm not here to take either of your sides," Kirika said. Randa stopped. "I'm telling you both this story so you know that I understand where you're both coming from. I know what it's like to feel that level of responsibility towards your city and your teammates-" Kirika looked to Michiko; "And I know what it's like for someone who loves you to be terrified that your duty is putting you in danger-" Kirika looked to Randa. "You've both got valid points, and it's not my place to say which one of you is 'right' and which one of you is 'wrong'. I'm here to be a safe, neutral person you can talk about your problems to, and hopefully in the course of talking to you both about your problems, I can help you come to a solution that you're both okay with. Now, let's see if I've got this right- Randa, your big concern is for Michiko's safety, and how waking up not knowing if she's okay is causing you stress, which is then causing stress on your relationship; would you say that's correct?"

Randa nodded her head, and Kirika continued; "And Michiko, your concern is that you need this job to provide for yourself and Randa, you're concerned about your city and the well-being of your teammates if you quit, but you don't have enough longevity to ask for work hours that would be more agreeable to Randa, correct?" Now, it was Michiko's turn to nod her head. Kirika turned to Randa, and asked her "Does Michiko ever get in touch with you during her jobs to let you know that she's safe; and, if not, would you feel better if she did?"

Randa shook her head, and "I would," Michiko said, "But since I'm working nights more often than not, I don't want to wake Randa up by blasting her in the head just to say that I'm all right. I don't want to be a bother-"

"You think that would bother me?" asked Randa, cutting Michiko off. "I'd rather you woke me up to let me know you were okay, than to wake up on my own and not know anything. Heck, I'd probably sleep better knowing you were safe."

"So why don't we try that?" asked Kirika. "Michiko, I want you to get into the habit of calling Randa at least once a night when you're working. It doesn't have to be for very long, just let her know that you're safe, and maybe tell her a bit about what you're doing if you're allowed to so she's not imagining how bad it could be." Kirika turned to Randa, and asked her "Would you feel better if Michiko did that for you?"

"Yes, please," Randa begged. "Just let me know you're safe. I don't care what you do or how you do it, as long as I know you're safe."

"All right, I'll do that," Michiko replied. "I'll do my best to give you a call every night when I'm working. There's a chance I might forget, or I might not find time because of a job, but as soon as I have a chance I'll call you to let you know that I'm safe."

"Great! Then it sounds like you've got a plan," Kirika said. "How about we schedule our next session for, say, two weeks from now, and you two can give me an update on how well that plan's working out for you. If it is, that's great; if not, we can try to work something else out instead." Kirika handed both girls her business card, and told them "I look forward to hearing about your progress; and just remember, I'm always available to talk outside of sessions if you need me."

The two girls filed out of Kirika's office. Kirika slumped back into her chair, smiling at the picture of her family. "Well, mom?" she asked of the Kure – now Emiya – Minako in the picture; "And you were worried that paying more attention to Oriko than to my studies wouldn't work out for me." She stuck out her tongue at the picture, flashing the mother in her photograph with the tongue stud that had long been a point of contention to her mother in the real world. "I love you, mom. I'm glad you pushed me to be the best me I could be. Because I love this job so much."

I'm not sure if I'll want to work on an update today, so instead enjoy this spur of the moment, absolutely unprompted omake solely because I felt like it, about Kirika as a relationship counsellor post-masquerade. It's what came to me instead of writing today's update.
