Rebellion on Otra Prime (1)
[X] Plan: Her Ladyship
-[X] [HQ] A Commissioned Major
-[X] [Trait] Implacable Determination. When you march, others join you so.
-[X] [Title] "Ma'am."
-[X] [Name] Lady Gwendolyn Starcrest

While the common soldiery held court and made merry, the officers of the 99th Scintillia were holding their own gathering as well. It did still featured fine attire with plenty of pomp, but the topic matter was of far greater levity. They were even permitted to take off their hats with curled wigs, expressions unusually severe as their leader detailed the upcoming campaign.

"Otra Prime is a planet of relatively low importance to the Imperium, a penal colony for minor offenses that could be pardoned with hard labor in their mines. The ores themselves aren't even a significant figure in the area, though no manufactorum would turn them away." Lieutenant General Meryln paused and surveyed their gathered officers. "So reports of a discontent uprising brewing among some of the laborers were backshelved by the Adminisatrum. Perhaps a Guard unit or two would have been sent to clean it up and be done with, but likely only if there happened to be a convenient one nearby to cycle away from the frontlines.

"Then when Cadia fell and the Warp decided to started throwing things about, it all came to a boil." The holopict shown by a hovering servo-skull changed a rough map of the planet's major population centers. Of note was the many red dots surging away from these settlements and grouping up in the mountainous regions. "An uprising among many of the mutant populations occurred, and they started gathering in the mountains to form an insurgency. It's not the nice one where they work with the locals too."

With a flicker, the holopict demonstrated some rather gruesome sights of smoking homes and towns, images only received hours ago from PDF commanders sending them to the incoming Astra Militarum. "They've got the hard attitude that you're either with them, or you're a snitch to the Arbites that put them." The commander of the Scintillians let that sink in before placing a gloved hand on the table. "Now, I know we all have certain feelings about this. About why we're going to find and crush this mutant rebellion that should be the clean-up of the Administarum. About why we're risking our precious blood for these lowborns. So I'll tell you why I agreed with the Lord-General to take this assignment.

"Because no matter what their sin, the people of Otra Prime are still citizens of the Throne. Good, hard working people, laboring and living to address whatever crime they have committed and earn redemption in the God-Emperor's eyes. They are what we, those born into luxury, are charged to protect," Meryln looked at each and every one of the commanding officers in the unit. "So this is not just a chance for our unit to finally catch a breather from constant conflict- it is a chance for us to remember our house oaths. Of why we are the chosen."

A silence followed that was eventually broken by one of those newest to this gathering. "I think, Lieutenant General," you began, "we know that quite well. If we didn't, we'd be Fusiliers."

There was a round of suppressed snickers from the others and even Meryln seemed to hold back a chuckle. "You make a good point, Major Starcrest. But we're not those pampered Fusiliers who stand back and complain at range about their nails- we're the Grenadiers who get in, and get killing." They rapped their fist against the table. "Chosen and Blooded!"

"Chosen and Blooded!" The other officers echoed, the regiment's war cry easily coming to their lips. The Lieutenant General seemed pleased by the approval of this anti-dissident effort and continued on, with the servo-skull changing to show tactical information.

"From what we can gather, the rebels so far are still minor in force compared to the PDF, but their gathering point is only a vague estimate right now. Intelligence is working hard in trying to pinpoint their exact base of operations, but it takes time. Time in which they're launching raids to acquire equipment and supplies from outlying communities, fading away before air power is mustered up against them. They're wily mutants, that's for sure."

"A question, Lieutenant General." A First Sergeant chimed. "On their mutation-"

"It isn't Genestealers. The local doctors checked, twice. Then a Biologos checked. Thrice. Just regular deviance, and minor ones at that."

The man nodded curtly. "No further questions."

"That does bring me to my next point however- there does not exist a correlation between the mutants and rebels. I repeat, there does not exist one. A thorough investigation by Arbites shows that both regular and mutant laborers are being targeted equally by these rebels. It seems that they do not even believe their rhetoric of being pro-mutant, namely just using it as a convenient excuse to label others immediately as their enemy." A round of dismissive snorts came from the assembled officers. "Yes, I know. But make sure you pass to all your commands to watch their fire. Do not assume until fired upon if there are civilians about."

"We can handle whatever they throw at us," Another encouraged before letting out a hasty cough. "Assuming that they don't break out plasma." A chorus of sarcastic assents followed, with Meryln shaking their head.

"Very funny. Autoguns likely, and likely commandeered vehicles." That did create a buzz that was swiftly forestalled. "The 407th Steel Legion assure me that those will be their priority, and the 59th Moebian have reportedly begun...sourcing explosives elsewhere."

The tone in their voice left no imagination on the ridiculous ways that the Penitents have been able scrounge equipment from nonexistent reserves. "As shameful as it might be, we will need to depend on them for now. Our stocks are tragically lacking after that engagement with the Waagh. Quartermaster?"

"Most of it is still being repaired," the supply officer sullenly repeated. "Lasguns are all I can offer right now, with maybe a bayonet if you're that needy. But you better damn believe those are the best lasguns maintained by the servants."

"They do their part out of battle, so that we can do ours." That earned thumps of assent from the gathering. You reflected, while toying with a blonde curl of your hat wig, that this did feel quite a bit like court back home in some ways. Just with a driven and purposeful edge to it.

One that was now focused on you. "Major Starcrest, you are our newest senior regimental officer. Have you taken inventory and roster for Fifth Battalion?"

You straightened up in your seat. "Yes, Lieutenant General. If I might present?" You handed over the dataslate containing your most recent count of the troops under your command.

HQ

Veteran Squad Unitus (9 Veterans +1 Sergeant)
Veteran Squad Deuces (9 Veterans +1 Sergeant)

Infantry Squad Sequet (9 Guardsmen +1 Sergeant)

"I see. So not enough yet to form a full battalion detachment," they noted and you gave an apologetic bob of the head. "Nevertheless, this is still an impressive showing given the haste it was put together. I will have you act instead as a vanguard detachment instead for now."

"We might not have the numbers, but you'll see that we'll fight hard however hard you need," you promised. This was met by measured acceptance and the topic moved to the others. You paid only half-attention to it, instead drumming your fingers in thought. The big thing currently was that while you did have a solid control over the hardened veteran core that did make up the majority of your command, leading the less experienced infantry was not something you could also pay attention to at the same time.

You were fairly sure you needed a trustworthy second in command for that, but those were precious scarce now in the 99th Scintillia. You'd have to keep an eye out for talented individuals among the ranks and promote them so. Or, more likely, you'd have to just accept the shattered remains of another battalion to integrated within your own.

There was also the question of equipment. As the Quartermaster had stated, the regiment was going to have to be quite miserly with their stocks of precious heirloom weapons. To make them available, you'd have to prove yourself worthy of surviving for it along with having proven yourself on the battlefield for it. Of course, that did result in the rather odd situation where you were being denied weapons to gain glory for said weapons, but that was simply just how things went in the Guard. And it wasn't like the trusty lasgun wasn't an awful weapon either.

Last but not least was also improving your command. While you had been trained and tutored for the role, reality was far difference than practice. Not to mention that these were hardly the most auspicious or plush conditions to be suddenly elevated to a leadership role. It would come with time and devotion, lessons earned on the battlefield and paid for with blood. You could only hope it wasn't too much of the later.

After all, the lives of your command- including your own- were the Emperor's currency. It had to be spent wisely.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The arrival of the Imperial Guard did not go unnoticed. Word spread swiftly among the PDF of Otra Prime, and was passed on to hopeful laborers who were actually looking forward to their coming. The sooner the Astra Militarum could deal with the mutant extremists, the sooner they could get back to their lives- back to their way of earning redemption for the God-Emperor.

Word trickled to the rebels eventually, who surely must have realized that the hammer of Imperial justice was upon them. Perhaps it took them by surprise, who had heard that normally such efforts would be far-delayed to years in the future. Or maybe they were always prepared for it coming at any moment. It didn't matter either way- their time was running out.

So they struck.

Intense vox traffic filled the comm networks when Back by Forty entered orbit around the planet. It sounded like the rebels had realized that this was their last chance to accomplish anything before the Imperial Guard made planetfall, and launched a coordinated assault against several targets of opportunity. The PDF was overwhelmed and panicking, their green command structure severely disrupted by the simultaneous attacks, not knowing what to prioritize.

But to the weary eyes of experienced campaigners, it was clear that many were just fake decoys. The rebels could only sustain a few points of dedicated attack, and the decoys were slowly funneling into them as reinforcements. It meant that all they had to do was defeat these main offenses, then the rebels should crumble and retreat, having failed their goals. If the PDF wasn't capable of organizing this, then there was nothing to it- the Imperial Guard would do it in their place.

The 407th Steel Legion volunteered to handle what seemed to be a vehicle assault on the primary airbase below, to try and free up the PDF's aircraft to exert their aerial dominance. Meanwhile, the 59th Moebians would send their teams to push back an attack on power generators, likely an attempt by the rebels to try and cut out all Imperial communications.

That left the 99th Scintillia to handle an attempted rebel capture of a city.

The large population centers below on Otra Prime were condensed around the few water sources found in oases scattered around, though nowhere near the degree as those found on Hive worlds. It was more like an amalgamation of basic facilities needed by the penal laborers for work and downtime, with little else such as tourism. The highest any of them got were a few stories tall, making these cities spread out a bit more on ground level.

It was nice to live in, but it also meant that when a breach in its outer walls occurred, local defense was sluggish and had so much room to cover. By then the attackers were already spilling in and splitting up, likely trying to achieve as much as they can before fleeing. It meant then that the Scintillia Grenadiers had their work cut out for them with a variety of options.

Fifth Battalion was selected to accompany the others down on Valkyries and get boots on the ground. Lieutenant General Meryln designed two primary objectives for the selected detachments to focus upon when they arrived. The first was to deploy within the city and start trying to flush out the attackers, engaging in urban combat in the penal colony to try and secure the city. The other was to launch a daring raid at the backs of the invading forces, trying to break them from behind and force a rout.

She left it up to each senior officer on what to pursue, only that both should be attempted.

Which assignment does Fifth Battalion undertake?

[ ] [Objective] Secure the City. Fifth Battalion is an experienced infantry core. Get them sweeping the buildings, rescuing civilians, and eliminating invaders.

[ ] [Objective] Flank the invasion. Fifth Battalion can get stuck straight into the heart of the battlefield where they thrive. Get ready for a hot drop, and start showing why the Guard is the Hammer.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Your unit starts off very basic, but very skilled. Remember that you yourself are also incredibly talented (I should fill out the actual battalion informational sometime soon).
- Equipment is pretty much vanilla starting out. Lasguns, laspistols, and chainswords. Then again, you've got Lasguns with 30" range....
- You'll get a more detailed briefing/battlefield preview after choosing your assignment. It'll also be when you choose which Strategems you'll make ready then.
- You will not be bringing all your units into battle all the time, some will just be reserves who really just are sitting it out for rest and recovery. Different from the reserves that can come in as reinforcements.

Terrain Markers
A list of various terrain markers on the battlefield, along with their stated effect. This is an extensive list that will undoubtedly grew with new landscapes and scenery, so check back often when you see something you don't realize.

Totally not the same assets as my other stuff.
A building for infantry to take and hold.
Infantry units here gain a +1 Cover save. Can block Line of Sight for all units. Cannot be crossed by vehicles.
A simple and sometimes improvised barrier meant to provide some cover.
Infantry units here gain a +1 Cover save. Units engage in fighting here do not count as being 1" with the enemy.
Light foliage that shields smaller bodies from hostile attacks.
All units here gain a +1 Cover save. Subtract 2" from units charging across this terrain.
Ruins of something grand, now nothing but brick and rubble.
Infantry units here gain a +1 Cover save. Subtract 2" from units charging across this terrain.

Valkyries belonging to the 59th Moebian would serve as the troop transports of the day, well-worn flyers in the hands of experienced pilots that knew the ins and outs of their machine. The trouble was that there was ever a chronic shortage of them, never enough to both handle close air support and transport duties at the same time. So more cargo space would simply have to be made in the form of attaching massive cargo containers that each Valkyrie would latch onto and carry planetside.

Soldiers of Scintillia, wearing their proud and crisp uniforms, lined up to board these metal boxes in disciplined lined ranks. They would be almost packed like sardines within, standing straight up all the while and having only a simple handrail above to grip onto for the journey below. But such conditions were borne stoically, every one of them knowing that the minor discomfort was going to be the least of their concerns for the next few days.

You watched Fifth Battalion get loaded up, then turned to board the actual passenger compartment of a Valkyrie that was situated above the latched container. Here you and your command squad had actual seats, a benefit of rank, and you strapped yourself into one of them. A moment later, you felt the aircraft rumble with its engines roaring up and soon, you watched Back by Forty fade in the distance from one of the side windows.

Then you turned to survey your command squad, handpicked veterans all who would guard your life with theirs. Corporal Gauin and Trooper Croix were busy reading dataslates, the contents of which you pretended to be unaware of. Warrant Officer Vernau was praying, a golden aquila grasped tightly in one hand. Trooper Millix caught your eye and instinctively moved to salute, only to catch herself in time. She was the newest one to join the command squad, her replacement having succumbed to the blow of an Ork Choppa.

At least you avenged them by gutting that Ork yourself with the power sword at your hip. You pressed your hand briefly against it, the final gift from your parents upon your enlistment with the Imperial Guard. Idly, you wondered how they were doing, if perhaps Scintillia was even still standing in the wake of this maelstrom which had crashed into the Imperium. A moment later, you shook your head and decided to better occupy your mind than think of such distracting thoughts.

You rose from your seat and squeezed into the cockpit of the Valkyrie. The pilot and navigator noticed you with curt nods, then returned their focus on their work. You noticed that there was a feed that connected to the attached cargo container, giving you a glimpse of how the troops were faring down below. It was admittedly hard to make out anything given the smoke that wafted about from lit lho stubs that stuck out of many mouths, a likely noxious stench wafting about the compartment. Unsurprisingly, most seemed unconcerned with it and those who did took deep swigs from their cartons that were likely filled with diluted wine.

In short, they were doing fine, and ready to go whenever.

That was a balm to your worries and you relaxed, slightly. There still was a battle ahead that would be the trial by fire for your leadership and you closed your eyes, whispering a prayer to the God-Emperor. Maybe Him on Terra would be gracious enough to bless you, to see your first command survive and endure whatever you faced down below. Or maybe He had much bigger worries at hand, what with Cicatrix Maledictum likely throwing everything in disarray. If so, then so be it.

You'd just make sure to protect humanity however you could.

Your eyes opened up and there was the city of Kotrius, right beyond the cockpit glass. The navigator nodded and opened up a radio channel to speak into. The pilot meanwhile talked to you, explaining in choppy sentences their schedule. 'The ones going into the city will strafe the outside on their way in. We' be dropping right afterwards. Get ready."

He punctuated the statement with a slam of the button that turned the lights red inside both the passenger and cargo bays. Immediately, the soldiers below spat and smothered their lho stubs, grinding out the flames with polished boots. Then a different sort of fire was produced, power cells containing the energy of miniature hells being slammed into lasguns in preparation. Officers leading them did the same with their laspistols while also checking the power packs of their chainswords, taking care to not yet draw them out.

A glance back to where your command squad was revealed similar actions underway, each of the veteran troopers powering up their mastercraft firearm and giving their uniforms a final once over. Some of them reached up to adjust in place their hat wigs, tucking in any sort of unseemly natural hair beneath those powdered strands. You unconsciously mimicked the gesture to make sure only those fake blonde curls stuck out. It wouldn't do to fight so inelegantly.

The sound of missiles firing drew your attention back to what was happening outside, just in time to witness intense flares of light dot the area outside the city. The crew of the Valkyrie gave dark chuckles before sobering up to focus on finding a good spot to land. The navigator glanced over to you and realization struck, they were wordlessly asking you for input. You craned your head further and surveyed the area, trying to figure out the best place to order them to put the first wave of troops down at.

Briefing: The enemy has been stunned and shocked by the sudden flanking assault on their invasion. Take to the field and make sure they don't recover in time. Expect primarily infantry with light vehicle support. You are attacking and will go first.

Victory Points:
Each side will score a victory point for every model eliminated. Secondary Objectives at (Sector 2, C4) and (Sector 3, E5) are worth 15 points each if controlled at the end of the engagement.

-[ ] Valkyrie Guns (2 CP). Signal for a gun run on a target unit. A Valkyrie attacks the target with a multi-las ranged attack. Must be activated at start of turn.

-[ ] Forward March (2 CP). Sweep the enemy from the field! A unit Advances a full 6" without rolling.

-[ ] Sudden Hammer (2 CP). Take advantage of the surprise assault. A target enemy does not gain Cover saves until the end of the Shooting phase.

-[ ] Take Cover (1 CP). All Troopers, hit the dirt! A targeted unit gains a +1 Cover save until end of Shooting phase.

-[ ] Inspired Orders (1 CP). In the Guard, follow the one with the most stars. An officer can immediately issue an additional command after their last one.

-[ ] To the Last (1 CP). Prove yourself worthy of the pin, Sergeant. An infantry squad may roll using a d3 instead of d6 in the Morale phase.

-[ ] Loose Grenadiers (1 CP). Ready grenades! Hurl! An infantry squad may use all Grenade weapons instead of only one when in Shooting or Overwatch.

-[ ] Experienced Eye (1 CP). Show them why experience matters over rank, Veterans. A Veteran squad in the Shooting phase increases -1 AP to all their weapons.

-[ ] Vaulter Precision (1 CP). Chosen and Blooded! A Vaulter unit gains a +1 to Hit for the Shooting phase this turn.

-[ ] Fate Point (1 CP). Sometimes, the gods are amused. Reroll a friendly dice roll.

-[ ] Indomitable Bravery (2 CP). The time to run is gone, now is the time to stand. A unit automatically pass a morale test. Must be activated before a morale test.

-[ ] Heroic Intervention (2 CP). Acts of daring are at home on the battlefield. A unit led by a character within 3" of a friendly unit in a fight may join in the Fight phase.

-[ ] Counter Charge (3 CP). Meet the enemy with equal fury in close combat. A targeted unit strikes first in the Fight phase after an enemy has charged. Must be activated on enemy charge.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- And here we go, already straight in.
- Each tile on the map represents a space of about 3" (rounding down) so your infantry as an example would move 6" (2 tiles) without Advancing or Charging. In that vein, thanks to your doctrine, your lasguns have a reach of 30" (10 tiles) and at 15" (5 tiles), you roll double your attacks. Yeah, that's a lot of dice...
-Each unit will only occupy one tile at a time. Both because of squad space and my sanity.
- Similarly for my sanity, we're going to cap five stratagems available per battle. Do note that as is, you have 4 CP in battle that does not replenish. Don't worry about specifying when a stratagem will be activated, I'll handle it based on the importance of the matter at hand.
- The blue zone is your deployment zone, so you can deploy up to four units in that space. The rest will be reserves that have a chance of arriving later. Note that you could choose to not field yourself, but I would strongly advise against it. Having no Officers sort of gimps the Guard (and stick close to them to make use of the orders).
- Two plans please, one for your deployment and the other for your stratagems.

16 hour moratorium to load lasguns.

Rebellion on Otra Prime (3)
[X] Plan: Lead by Example
[X] Plan: Kill Them Before They Kill You

Today was supposed to be the promised day.

That was the thought that echoed throughout the assorted rebels, what spurred them on to commit sedition and treason against the Imperium. From stealing equipment to raiding settlements, that had been the belief that pushed them on. It was what justified every single crime committed, every town put to the torch, every non-sympathizer shot in the back of the head.

All for the day where their people could finally earn the respect they deserved in the only language these unblessed could understand- violence. And if they still didn't respond? Then the solution was painfully simple: elimination of everybody else. There wouldn't be any more mistreatment of lessers if there was only one people to inhabit the planet.

The uprising now was the culmination of this fervent ideology, each and every believer in the cause doing their utmost to make it true. While their comrades attacked critical infrastructure and military targets elsewhere, the group here was meant to take and capture this city as a message. A demonstration that no longer would they slink in the shadows, hiding away from the Arbites trying to capture and drag them back to the labor camps. No longer would they suffer a life of servitude, digging ores in the name of some worthless humans dying elsewhere. No longer would they tolerate being labeled different, for mutations beyond their control.

There would be no more difference when all others were eradicated and they ruled.

Today was supposed to be the promised day. Where we show that you are either with us, or you die like the rest.

The walls of the city did hold out a bit, but fell to the blasting charges they had bought. The PDF response was spread thin across everywhere, so there was little stopping them from charging in to begin their long-awaited work. The rebels poured though the breach, firing stolen autoguns about to cause terror and panic among the civilian laborers and prisoners. Perhaps some would be enticed to join, but too many still placed a deluded faith in that with good service shall come release. Such delusion was pointless and stupid, in the eyes of these rebels.

There was no point in hoping for a better future if you weren't willing to kill for it, in their opinion, and they would show it so.

As more and more were either forcibly recruited at gunpoint or gunned down, feelings of elation and excitment overtook the invaders. Everything was going to plan everywhere, and it looked for a moment like the defenders were about to collapse. That this dream was about to become true.

Then the scream of rockets filled the air and the remaining attackers outside the wall vanished in great screaming balls of fire.

Over the heads of rebels swept gunships that they had only heard whispers of but never seen before, flying angels that seemed to spit death with every weapon firing forth. They faltered but rallied swiftly, guns turning upwards and firing wildly to try and shoot them down. Bullets pinged off the canopies and some seemed to even withdraw, causing a resurgence of morale among the rebels. But they weren't withdrawing out of the fight.

They were withdrawing to drop their cargo before any further risk came to them. It wouldn't do for the soldiers to die while still in the air to these rebels. No, the 99th Scintillia Grenadiers deserved a chance to get their boots on the ground and fight to defend the city as best they could.

Today was supposed to be the promised day. If the Imperial Guard didn't show up.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You held your breath when you felt the Valkyrie of the 59th Moebian swap into its alternative hover mode, sacrificing speed for precision. It was easier to shoot down now if any anti-air element focused on it, but the rebels seemed to still be recovering from the strafing runs. Or perhaps they didn't have any such dedicated vehicles, which wouldn't be too surprising. The PDF didn't have many Hydras according to intelligence reports, relying more on their fighters for aerial security. That meant the rebels didn't get a chance to steal them in great numbers.

Either way, it meant the Valkyrie was coming down slowly and gently. When the safe height was reached, the navigator looked your way, the question clear in their hidden face. You gave a single affirming nod and they reached out to grasp a lever. With a heavy clunk, it was pulled back.

And the cargo container the aircraft was carrying was released.

They felt it, the moment they dropped. All lights inside winked out at once, leaving only the glow of lasguns to illuminate the space. It cast dark shadows on each and every one of their faces, understanding that death could very well await them the moment they touched the ground. It was only through whatever courage they had mustered at the moment that they remained focused and tensed for whatever came next.

The container slammed into the dirt and the explosive bolts fired, blowing apart the walls at the seams. The metal sheets jutted out before falling over, laying flat for the soldiers to charge over and onto the ground. Already there was sporadic and random bullet fire from where their enemy was firing randomly, trying to hit any target outside effective range.

Fifth Battalion was unphased and simply began to form up. Sergeants activated chainswords and raised them into the air, calling loudly for their squads to rally on them. Then when enough assembled, they turned and led the way into battle, looking almost entirely out of place with their regal and bright clothing. But even in war, Scintillians had pride, and they wore it proudly.

You felt the dry and warm air wash over you when the back of the Valkyrie's passenger bay opened up. The flier was close enough to the ground now to just hop off and the members of your command unit began to do so. You would have been the first one out, had it not been for the pilot catching your attention to give you a parting message.

"Emperor be with you, Major!"

You made the sign of the Aquila and stepped off into war.

Once you felt Otra Prime beneath you, you activated your short-range comm-bead. "All squads, this is Major Starcrest. Status report!" Each of them immediately responded with ready status and you nodded. "Remember, our goal today is to show these rebels that this is an Imperial city we will protect! - Just realized the unit markers currently block the terrain. Ugh, I'll shrink them down next time, this has taken long enough with me going so far as to customize them.
- So as you can see, you'll issue orders to each squad on what to focus and how you want them to fight. Each of these should be self-explanatory on what they will do, and I'll try my best to accommodate any particular details that can be worked in. Also note you can set a target location anywhere on the map, not just what a unit's regular movement stat is. They'll keep carrying out the order over turns unless you tell them otherwise.
- As mentioned before, I'll handle stratagem activation in the turns, so don't worry about those.

"All forces, advance onto the city!" You raised your cackling power sword and pointed it to the ruined rubble ahead. "We need to plug that breach before they try to slip by. Squad Unitus, with me!"

The squad of veteran soldiers began to jog along with your bodyguard, but that wasn't fast enough for you. "Double time it!" You snapped and strode forward ahead of them, catching your command squad by surprise. "Get into those ruins now, Unitus! Get ready to lay down a volley on my command!"

While the veterans were easily adapting to the new battlefield with incredible aplomb, the same couldn't be said for their less experienced ilk. Squad Cintus attempted to move just as swiftly but bricks and other rubble tripped them up on their way to the wall. At least Squad Sequet noticed their comrades' mistake and took it at a steadier pace, allowing for them to make decent ground without too much strain.

Nearby, Trooper Croix was bent over, winded by the pace, but there was no time for rest. Not when the enemy was within range. "Get up, this is nothing compared to the Orks!" You pulled at the lasgun in her hand, forcing it up to point at the regrouping enemies. "Focus on pulling the trigger, you'll do fine. Unitus, with us! Get ready to fire on Target Alpha while they're caught out in the open!"

"You heard the Major, you know how to do this!" Sergeant Raou encouraged over the hum of his chainsword. "Ready! Aim!"

Even though it was far beyond the effective range, you leveled your laspistol at the foe all the same. It naturally wouldn't hit anything, but the image of the commanding officer taking figurative part of the volley couldn't be denied when the veterans smoothly followed your lead. You let a moment pass, then issued the command. "All units, fire at will!"

The sharp crack of lasguns filled the air, vibrant crimson streaks that traversed the battlefield. They were shots of pure energy, packed into brief beams of light that expended all their power to punch burned holes in targets. Many often remarked that this was just not enough against the various enhanced enemies that the Astra Militarum regularly faced.

But against these rebels, it was good enough to drop bodies where they stood.

The experienced guardsmen of Fifth Battalion fell back into well-established patterns of firing again and again, pausing only to eject spent power cells and insert fresh ones. These depleted packs were carefully pocketed for recharge later, a handy logistical feature that made the lasgun so popular across the Imperium. All one had to do was hook it up to a generator or failing that, leave it in the sun to naturally absorb the heat.

You fired a few more shots idly before turning your attention back to your command. It was then you realized that there were shots coming from the side, not just in front, and you glanced to make an approving nod. It seemed Squad Sequet was eager to contribute their own volleys to help make up for Squad Cintus' fumbles.

The sheer volume of shots was enough to strike down even more, to the point where very few of Target Alpha was left. You watched them closely, ready to redirect fire away the moment they started running. Surely after all that, they would break and run for it.

True to your expectations, the rebels apparently had enough of the las coming their way. Though the fact they visibly threw away their guns before running caught you by surprise. Had they perhaps figured they were just done fighting at all? If so, then well, it was up to the Arbites to hunt them down later. You just had to defeat them here for now, and it looked like you were well on your way to do doing so.

That didn't stop a cheer from erupting from your troops when they noticed the enemy breaking and running. You allowed it to go on for a few more moments before tapping on the comm-bead. "Good work, but brace yourself. We've only just begun and the enemy's going to make a counterattack. Count on it!"

It seemed that for the most part, they were going to settle for relocating their forces. You noticed that most seemed focused on retaking their old position and frowned. While you were sure that holding the city's breach was the right answer, perhaps taking the enemy forward position would make it easier for their entire unit to break. After all, they very well couldn't simply resume their siege if their former fortifications were in Imperial hands.

That was assuming you could maintain presence at the breach as well however.

- A swimming first turn, you obliterated the only enemy unit who could fire back before they even had a turn. Enemy units can't even match your range, so you're right now in your element.
- However, less good was the fact you didn't get any successful reinforcements yet. Well, you haven't taken losses, but the enemy could also try to reinforce themselves. We'll see how it goes.
- As a side note, the more victory points you have over your opponent, the higher chance that the overall battle swings thanks to your intervention. But if that isn't enough, whatever victory points you score go into your requisition bank for purchasing stuff between campaigns. Up to you to decide to risk it or not, though right now being in the lead, the enemy has to be the ones to take the initiative or else risk losing.
- You can choose to not change any current orders, just make a Plan that declares it so.
- EDIT: Also, that bit about tiles rounding up/down? Decided it rounded up when it comes to Advancing/Charging. Cuz otherwise it'd be miserable to get anywhere fast on random rolling for battlefield movement.

[X] Plan: A Slight Adjustment

The Vaulter swore colorfully when an errant bullet smacked against their cover and shards of rockcrete went skipping about. They held a warding arm against their head, waiting until the pieces stopped falling about, then quickly checked themselves. Nothing but a slightly dirtied uniform from where they had been laying about in the ruins.

Disappointing, but acceptable. They prepared to rise up and return fire, only to pause when Sergeant Raou passed behind them with new orders. "Get ready, we're moving."

Another colorful curse and a hissed demand followed. "Why are we leaving good cover?! We've got good protection here!"

"Because the Major says we're moving, so shut up and follow orders! Quit your bellyaching, I'll find a nice rock for you somewhere else," the fellow Scintillian snapped back and moved on without further comment. The rite was repeated among the members of Squad Unitus until each and every trooper was sullenly informed they were to depart their firing position. Complaints and backhanded insults filled the air, a most unseemly and slovenly display for the nobleborn. Raou let it stand, knowing that it was just his squad airing out their worries before they focused up.

At least he hoped so, as he raised his chainsword. "Squad Unitus, with me! We move!"

"And at rapid pace!" You barked, mirroring the gesture with your power sword. "Cover Sequet while they get into cover!" You moved with your lifeguards, advancing at a fast pace to cover ground. Just a few more steps, then you were at the center of the breach. Having it under your control would surely hamper the invader's attempts to flood into the city.

Clouds of dirt kicked up about you when distant enemies fired bursts with their autoguns, bullets slamming into the ground to little effect. Still, it was a kind reminder that you definitely were in their range now, and if they focused their attack on you, concentrated fire could begin picking off your small retinue. You grimaced and resolved to address that issue some day, either with some specialists or perhaps just more numbers.

For now though, there were others willing to punish those who wanted to harm you. "Children of Scintillia, Vaulters! Listen to my command!" Sergeant Neginol roared. "On my mark, fire into those curs in the trees! Ready!"

Pinume had some choice words even while their troops steadied their aim using the rubble. "It's my command too-"

"Fire!"

Las fire lit up the rebels taking cover behind trees with thick and hardy trunks, strong enough to shrug off the beams coming their way. But they didn't need to rely upon them much, with how so many of the shots simply fell ineffectively around them. You watched in disbelief when one of them took a shot, only to stumble and dive behind a tree trunk.

Overall, the volley from the Guardsmen was disappointing. They really did need an example of stellar performance, and you bellowed for it to happen. "UNITUS! Demonstrate what a true Vaulter must be like! Fire when ready!" You raised your laspistol to mimic their actions, moving your retinue to do the same.

Target Beta breaks and flees!

Lasguns fired and true to your expectations, more went down. Moments later, there was movement where it seemed like the squad had enough and were beating a hasty retreat, likely against orders. You lowered your sidearm and let out a ragged sigh of relief, but pressed your lips together with worry.

It seemed that the initial shock and awe from the arrival of the 59th Grenadiers had dissipated, and the rebels were swiftly regaining their nerve. Now it was looking to be a proper battle instead of a simple clean-up operation. A moment later, you shook your head and refocused on the situation at hand instead of whatever was going through your enemy's mind. You had to keep your attention to the battle and do everything in your power to secure that victory.

Target Alpha Deploying in Sector 4 I5

"Sergeant, look!"

Raou peered over the top of his cover and swore at the line of advancing figures. "Oh, Throne! Ma'am, enemy reinforcements! Designating, Target Alpha!" He swung his laspistol around and began to fire on them, along with his squad to try and discourage their attack.

You heard the report and winced. Then you looked over the battlefield and noticed that the other enemy infantry was using the distraction caused by their newly arrived comrades to recapture their old siege positions. If they were to hold it, they possibly could have a secure fallback line to regroup and reorganize their fleeing forces. Were that to happen, you'd have to order Fifth Battalion fall back into the city, assuming you could still fight back then.

The approaching enemies fired as they moved up, focusing on the veterans trying to suppress them from the ruins. In contrast to the brilliant beams of lasguns, the projectiles that came from the muzzle of autoguns were almost invisible to the eye. The exception was those in great volume, such as what came the way of Squad Unitus.

There was suddenly a pained cry when one of the Troopers was struck and fell back. Raou was closest and scrambled beneath the hail of bullets to reach their subordinate first. "Feyer! Feyer is down!"

"N-no! I'm...fine?" The Trooper dazedly rose from the ground and hesitatingly pressed a hand up to their exposed head. After a moment of feeling about, they blinked and turned to realize that their hat wig was over there, a smoking hole where it had been hit. "By the Emperor, I think my wig saved me!"

Raou was stunned and checked as well to be sure. Then he laughed and slapped the bewildered Feyer on the arm, pulling them back up. "You lucky bloody saint! I'll write you up later for losing that blessed kit, now get back into cover before they take another shot at you!"

"Yes sir!"

You exhaled noisily in the wake of that exchange. That had been very close to your first casualty since taking command of Fifth Battalion. It would of course come sooner or later, but having the bells of Holy Terra keep silent for a little while longer was a nice point of pride. The trick now was to figure out how to keep it that way.
