Command: Modern Air & Naval Operations: Let's Play and Expansions

Due to a quirk of the UI and me not really paying attention, I just launched a large number of cruise missiles at Southern Syria.....

Except I did it from just north east of the island of Crete, so they'll fly over Israel...

I wonder what life was like before the internet (no I don't, having lived it) when you had to pay for entertainment of this magnitude.

In bad news I lost an entire flight of Super Retards. I told them to attack the remaining Russian ships because I suspect they're jamming my radars. Anyway the Super Enterds didn't have enough LGBs to do the job and started strafing. Luckily the down pilot event didn't fire (or unluckily). I accidentally downed my CSAR helos for maintenance and can't undo it.
This is the best run war intervention.

The game doesn't track individual kills. It wouldn't be incredibly impressive anyway, most of what they're sending up are MiG-21/23s that don't have long range missiles, and supported by spotty radar coverage to vector them onto targets. It results in situations where they go in at full burner on a group of decoys just circling, and they fly right past a flight Hornets and get AIM-9Xs shoved up their ass.

They use a massive number of SAMs to contest my cruise missile strikes and decoy swarms. This attrites significant portions of my cruise missile attacks, but they stimulate the defenses so my follow on ARM flights and basically clean house on them. Hours later I send in the dedicated strikers to hit the actual objectives.

Aside from attriting missiles and taking out the occasional SAM site, do the cruise missile strikes affect the enemy ADN in any other way? Does the game track crew fatigue and morale, for instance?

Nope. Nothing like that at all. Dealing purely with fire and steel here.

At the moment I'm watching waves of F-15s futilely attempt to destroy chemical weapon bunkers. Mk82s are pretty much just bouncing off. Mk84s aren't much better and my magazines don't have that many PGMs left. So I'm probably gonna have to lean on on my stores of unguided munitions to do some of the work and in the interim load up some Strike Eagles with bunkerbusters.

I have A-10s free roaming around northern and central Syria knocking out various targets and emptying their guns whatever they can find almost completely unopposed. I only say almost because every once in awhile I locate a Sa-22 dead set on shooting down a few of my bombs and missiles.

Oh my God, I'm at work here, and I've been working hard... to not explode in laughter at your operation. This is absolutely wonderful. Grandiose, I could even say. The way you manage to piss off absolutely everybody in less than two days is worth of... I don't know, I never imagined this.

- you sunk a Russian ship
- you are bombing their IADS
- you are firing cruise missiles over Israel
- you are not destroying their CW bunkers
- you are ordering forty year old French planes (the SEM are forty yo) to strafe modern Russian ships
- you are having bombers taking off very publically from the British Isles and flying over the whole of Europe

Damn it, if the Civil War isn't ended by next day with Assad, Al-Qaeda, Israel, Russia and most of Europe signing a pact of mutual defense against you, I'll be astonished.

My suggestion for the next step would be to launch your bombers at Moscow. That way, you would divide the Russian forces' attention and possibly reduce the effectiveness of their C&C. Maybe one or two missiles at Beijing too, they might be preparing something nasty.

*goes away laughing his head off*

I actually have a general question on this.

How *do* you counter TALDs? Like for instance, how did the Serbs in Kosovo manage to keep their SAMs alive despite swarms of USAF decoys? Just by giving no fucks what NATO actually hit?

A whole bunch of observers using the Mark One Eyeball to check which contacts might be associated with actual aircraft?

Admittedly, this really only works if all of the other side's sorties are along regular flight paths, so that you can build up enough certainty as to where an aircraft will be at any given time that you can aim at it.

By not shooting when you think it's a decoy.

The reason the Serbs could afford to ignore NATO's early efforts was that they were targeting the notoriously difficult to attack hidden ground forces. The forces could afford to put as much effort into hiding as they did because there was no threat of a ground invasion. As long as their IADS remained intact the effectiveness of their air forces would be hampered in searching for the Serb's ground forces.

Threatening ground invasion and attacking economic targets changed the game.

Remember to lob a few missiles at Turkey, in case any Syrians managed to sneak across the border.

Update:

The sun has set on the first day. The Syrian Air Force has either been destroyed or is simply refusing to leave the ground to contest me. At this point they could make a good go at it because I've re-tasked most of my fighters to bomb-trucking. That being said, Israel hasn't done anything aggressive, and the Russian fleet at Latakia will need to be dredged out.

I'm readying for a second round of strikes and rotating support aircraft. Which has caused the Sa-5s I forgot about to become somewhat of a problem because they can sling missiles 150nmi, well within range to plink at my backfield. I just had a a flight of F-16s finish loading HARMs. I will take the necessary actions.

poaw returns home triumphant, giant "Mission Accomplished" banners flying from his carrier only for him to be confronted with the radioactive firestorm of what was once the United States of America.

I'd guess that the game primarily looks at loss rates and target destruction when evaluating victory? So, since poaw's had very few actual losses...
