[Canon] - Dice Tales: Naruto #1: Unexpected Friends, Unexpected Discovery

    Naruto really didn't know how it came to this. If you asked him though, he'd blame it on either Chouji or Shikamaru. Four months before Graduation, Naruto noticed that Ino, Shikamaru, and Chouji kept sneaking off to somewhere after the Academy every Wednesday. Honestly, he was content to leave it be. What they did after the Academy was their business, not his own. And it stayed that way.

    For a month.

    Then he overheard Chouji say something about being excited for some kind of game. When he asked what kind of game, Chouji kind of clammed up and refused to say anything. That caused him to get curious and interested. So, Naruto decided to stal-I mean, follow Chouji. There he saw the three meet up in an empty classroom and Shikamaru pulling out some books and a board. The he got out some small figurines and give them to Ino and Chouji. Naruto, in a rare display of patience, waited instead of jumping right out. He watched them play for twenty minutes before he came out of hiding and demanding to be allowed to play.

    His sudden appearance startled all three of them, even causing Ino to let out a brief scream. After a brief argument, they decided to allow Naruto to join them, since they figured he'd get bored and leave in a few minutes. Though it quickly turns out they were wrong.

    Very wrong.

    You see, Shikamaru had a few character sheets around for some random NPCs and decided to randomly give one to Naruto. A Human Bard by the name Fen Viknusk. And within ten minutes Naruto already developed an entire backstory for his character. A backstory similar to his own, but treating as if the worst parts were commonplace instead of a one or two time occurrence. And he got very into roleplaying as the character.

    By the end of the session Naruto had enjoyed the game, and more importantly the social aspect of the game with Ino, Shikamaru, and Chouji. And the next time the four met, it changed. Shikamaru dropped out of the party to become the GM of the group. Naruto also brought along his Biwa to play the songs he'd play in the game in real life to to better his role-playing. And so started the story of Iris Widow (Elf, Druid, Ino), Thich Nhat (Human, Monk, Chouji), and Fen Viknusk (Human, Bard, Naruto) in Ogres and Oubliettes. And an unexpected friendship between the four.

    Inspired by @Shark8 The Games People Play. Originally, I was going to have Naruto stumble across Sasuke's group. But then I thought, 'Hey! What about a GM Shikamaru?' and this idea was born! Hope you enjoyed this!

    Well, now I have this song stuck in my head:

    Ttrpging would actually be good practice for stuff like espionage and undercover missions. Also basic maths and probability, as well as imagination/creativity. Fairly important for any ninja.

    Oh God, imagine game night at a bar frequented by our beloved adult ninjas. Anko and Kurenai as Co game masters is frightening.

    I was actually thinking a group of Kakashi, Asuma, Kurenai and GUY. But that's an amazing idea as well.

    Naruto Uzumaki, Shikamaru Nara, Chouji Akamichi and Ino Yamanaka are now {Friends}, Naruto's PER & INT have risen by 1 each and Naruto's {Stealth} and {Biwa Proficiency} have leveled up once each.

    Anyone wanna give Sakura a Dice Tales series? :V

    Also, I find the idea that Sakura being the only one in the team to not have her own Dice Tales series funny. Like, someone needs to be the odd one out, so why not make the black sheep of Team 7 be even more of a black sheep?

    "Happy birthday, Ino!" Inoichi said, pulling the package out from its hiding place; the small package wrapped in an eye-catching metallic wrapping paper.

    He watched as his young daughter tore open the paper, a smile on his face as she held up the card-holder for her first deck of Paradox Billiards Vostroyan Roulette Fourth Dimensional Hypercube Chess Strip Poker — the reveal prompted an "Inoichi!" from his wife.

    "It's fine, honey… it's a children's card game." He said, explaining as he grinned sheepishly at his wife.

    Weeks of intense training later and Ino was finally able to beat her dad in the children's card game. It was a moment of triumph and she redoubled her effort to look at the power of the cards: traps, spells, creatures, alignments, flip effects and so on…

    Her musings were interrupted as she came across another girl, crying in the park, the victim of bullying about her forehead… her rather large forehead. After comforting the other girl, Ino had a thought — "Hey, come here tomorrow, and I'll have something to give you!"

    And the next day, when the two met up, Ino gave her a ribbon, big and red, to tie back her hair — and then the trap! — "Hey, do you want to play a game?"

    "Uh…" Sakura seemed indecisive for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah."

    And that was how Ino hooked Sakura on Paradox Billiards Vostroyan Roulette Fourth Dimensional Hypercube Chess Strip Poker — a fiendishly complex children's card game that was both addictive and required a lot of thinking and planning both in the structuring of your own deck beforehand and in the playing and execution during the game.

    Inoichi grinned, seeing his daughter playtesting his game with her new friend — just as planned.

    I think I just did that to Sakura -- she now plays the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game.

    • I'm torn between wanting Guy to be the DM or Kurenai using Genjutsu to actually project what things look like. With Guy being the quiet and shy Wizard that knows every spell in the book to Kakashi's disbelief.
    "OF COURSE! IF I BREAK CHARACTER A SINGLE TIME THIS SESSION I WILL READ THE ENTIRE O&O MANUAL AND ALL SUPPLEMENTS! NOW THEN, SHALL WE BEGIN? Orion nods quietly at his new party member, before returning to his spellbook sure that today would be the day he broke into Fourth Level Spells"
     
    HMMMMM. I kinda figured Sakura would be the type to do dungeon crawlers, or read the logs of previous games.

    In Japan, the ttrpg scene tends to focus on one shots and not long campaigns. Iirc, the records of such games can be sent to magazines and published. I know a few series that started as a usually home brewed ttrpg played by the creators and friends. It'd be fitting if Sakura relaxed by reading and probably critiquing past games.

    Sakura doesn't have many friends, she used to have one, but she broke that off because she was selfish. However, a few months ago she met this nice boy, named Akio Sato, and his twin sister, named Yuki Sato. Both of them play Ogres and Oubliettes every Sunday. After they first met in the shopping district, they convinced (blackmailed) her to play it. Now after the first session she lied saying "I can't stop now the Adventures Duo have started there journey." Now Ember Pines (Elf, Mage, Yuki); and Ember Sasaki (Giant, Berserker, Sakura) and Akio as the GM.

    Eventually another person joined, Kiba Inuzuka, by the twins ways. Soon the Adventures Duo were joined by an new member, Hiro Ito (Human, Assassin, Kiba), becoming the Dangerous Three (they aren't that good at names). When asked about why he chose his class, Kiba simply stated. "That's what we are basically, it was either that or Thief." He said. Then the game was on again. After five hours that seemed like ten, the Dangerous Three finally beat the Dark King and his army of zombie knights with the help the Kingdom Of Trees. "We should do this again some time." Said Yuki as she and her twin waved their new friends goodbye.

    "That was better then I thought it would be." said Kiba still surprised they beaten the Dark King and his army. "I know right when I first heard of the 'best game played on a table' I though we would literally be on a table." Said Sakura. "Hey, aren't Sasuke, Hinata, Shikamaru, and the others.' Asked Kiba. "Yeah, I think so. Maybe we should ask them to join us." Sakura said. Then at the same time then thought who they woul be asking, Sasuke, will want nothing to do with us, Naruto, Sakura shuddered, Hinata, she might be too shy to join, and etc. "You know want?" Kiba asked. "What?" Asked Sakura. "Let's wait before we ask the others." Said Kiba. "You may be right." Sakura said sadly.

    P.S. I'm not the greatest writer. Especially trying to make characters be 'in character'.
