I didn't expect it to be as jokey, GotG-esque in tone as it was, but it didn't detract and I didn't find any particular joke overstaying it's welcome.

This is something I can wholeheartedly agree on. There was humour, sure, but it never felt poorly placed and it never tried to dominate the stage. That's not an easy balance to get right.

About to see the film with a friend. Shall report my thoughts when it's over in a few hours.

EDIT:
Well, just finished. Was great, with some excellent comedy moments, and the twist came totally out of left field for me. This may because I don't know the backstory of the alien races, though. How Fury lost his eye was also quite unexpected.

Looking forward to Endgame even more now, although Captain Marvel doesn't seem to rival what Thanos showed off from what I can tell. Eh, odds are we'll have a time travel plot for the movie, so I guess that wouldn't quite matter.

Just watched it with my mom. Got a metal bucket. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

Not a ground breaking movie, but the leading edge of the middle tier Marvel movies, below the likes of Black Panther and Infinity War.

Tho It did earn a lot of extra sures from me because SPACE.

I was kinda put out because a guy behind me couldn't stop bitching about stuff the movie explains fairly well like how it devotes entire scenes to demonstrating
she can hook up Kree tech to Earth tech for interstellar communications and yet for him the pager was an ass pull because she shouldn't be able to do mechanical tasks

Sorry to hear that a salty jackass spoiled the experience, however much.

I rather liked that detail. Cemented that she was capable and understood her gear.

I think something to consider here is that what we see of her in CM is her just beginning to understand and use her powers. As of Endgame she's had...what, twenty years plus of practice with them? With a goodly amount of that being her fighting to end a massive intergalactic war. And succeeding.

As an example, the first after-credit scene appears to show her travelling all the way from 'a couple of galaxies' to Earth in, oh...a handful of minutes. So y'know. That.

Sounds plausible, yup.

So, I hear some folk grumbling about disliking the film due to the protagonist having 'stiff acting' and coming off as expressionless. Having seen the film itself I never got that impression, but I'm curious to hear others thoughts on this. Also on whether they find Marvel showing up as a new person in Endgame vs the rest of the cast having had multiple movies and a decade+ of RL time to cement themselves in fans' hearts. Admittedly Marvel's situation could also apply to Spiderman, come to think of it, but I guess his widespread appeal and street-level power doesn't quite invoke the same knee-jerk as hearing Captain Marvel rivals Thanos in power?

As something else to think about, this movie wasn't even TRYING to be subtle as:

An utterly brutal 'take-that' at the entire fucking United States as a whole. A 'noble warrior hero' race? Carpet-bombing planets to take out 'terrorist' bases which are almost always refugees fleeing the wars that the empire started? 'Only through us is the best of you realized'? I could go on, but the whole Skrull plotline was kind of a murderously brutal takedown of the US's tactics and general flailing about in the nebulous and asinine 'War on Terror'. I mean, the more I think about it, the more I totally get why the damn neckbeards are so pissed about this movie and I like it a lot more.

No, she totally was stiff. BUT! But-butbutbutbutbut. It was actually a plot point in the movie. Remember, her 'mentor' was trying to get her to go full-vulcan and generally trying to keep her from coming to the needed emotional realizations to keep her as an asset; and it does seem to partially be a form of trauma muting her responses. We see her much more visibly emote in all of her flashback bits and pieces. Not 'bad actor' more 'actually a relevant and pretty damn good plot point that could have easily gone wrong with another actor' *fuckingBurnhamfucker*. Think more 'abuse victim'.

It was pretty good. I'll actually say that its a better movie than Thor Ragnarok, despite being more entertained by Ragnarok; This movie was more consistent, Ragnarok had issues that annoyed me when watching it

Doctor Strange was a fairly major player in Infinity War, and he only had a single movie before that. He was also one of the most powerful heroes right off the bat.

They definitely could mishandle it, but I don't think they will.

Saw it last night, I enjoyed it but was not super wowed. Sam Jackson was good and the action was fine but it didn't quite have the charm of ragnarok or Guardians for me.
I will agree with others that I was surprised at the take that against American Empire the film presented as subtly as a brick through a window. Not unhappy but definitely surprised.

Saw it with small cousins, they seem to like it so its nice.

For good and bad stuff
Neat
  • Clark Gregg cgi, I heard there wasn't an actor there. That's awesome stuff for the development of FX... still picking my jaw from the floor. Thought that was a human most of the time.
  • Ben Mendelsohn, always typecast as a bad guy but now he gets to shine as a good guy. Its pleasant seeing Dagget/Krennic/Sorento doing some valor
  • Maria and Monica Rambeau, definitely like how the kid looks the part (right hair) and even they mentioned that she will 'glow' or there is a chance for that to happen.

Not
  • Fury Eye loss fits better in Black Widow or Winter Soldier solo movie
  • Skrulls are now good, mixed bag. This does remove many potential future arcs (skrull wars) and several FF villains like Kl'rt as well as Paibok
Ok
  • They might Ego the Grand Intelligence

In theater waiting for it to start. When done right (and not radioactive from CW2) Carol is one of my favorite superheroes. I really love her so I'm excited.

Also lol a trailer for Heavens Feel showing in two days. FATE EVERYWHERE

Saw it. Good middling Marvel movie, made much better because it has for the first time, Sufficient Kitty. Best character in the MCU so far.

Yooooo I loved it. Not Black Panther level obviously but 100% above average and just a blast of a movie. Brie Larson is a treat, Goose is best cat, the twist got to me and I caught Kelly Sue's cameo and smiled. Teaser afterward was fun.

Just the little things kinda got to me. Like Carol doing the dishes. I'm really happy with this.

Just came back from it
Really really fun. Not amazing, but definitely above average. Feels like a weird combination of Phase 1 and Phase 3 sensibilities.

I think my not being too familiar with the comics base kinda helped my enjoyment, since I wasn't sure what to expect. There is a twist that I kiiinda sorta saw coming, since I saw Guardians Of The Galaxy, but I wasn't entirely sure what angle they were going to go for with it, so I still got some impact out of it.

Also not sure why people are complaining about Brie Larson's acting being wooden. It was understated, yes, but she was emoting fine IMO.

Also also, they used a song by Garbage in there as part of the "hey this is set in the 90s" memes, and it made me disproportionately happy.

On another note, from the trailers I was low-key dreading how Dragonball Z the finale looked; but in practice it actually worked and made me like it. Like it was definitely over-the-top, don't get me wrong, but it worked. Though easily the best part of that was afterward, with Carol dragging the guy back to his ship by one leg. You could tell she was pretty well done with his shit by then, and it was just a really satisfying moment somehow.

And I liked that it had a sense of humor, but with restraint. Like, it was very funny, but not over-the-top annoyingly wacky like GotG and Thor Ragnarok were for me; the comedy was well-placed and didn't undermine the legitimate story beats.

Really looking forward to Endgame.

Gives a whole new meaning to 'The Nova Corps' now doesn't it :p
