But then, I looked at it the other way: "What if there was a reason for the police NOT to show up?" I looked through my notes and the next bit but sort of clicked into place, no Deus Ex Contessa required.
Really either Contessa not waiting for Taylor with clothes and a bowl of soup is part of the Path or Alexandria-Costa-Brown is going to have words with Contessa when Taylor punts her into orbit for all this.
Taylor realized she'd been overthinking everything. Her paranoia was probably justified but, it would take time for the PRT to start a man... woman... girlhunt for her. If they hadn't shown up by now, they wouldn't be waiting with dozens of troopers with confoam sprayers the moment she walked ashore.
So, as the Sun touched the hills to the west, Taylor slipped into the water. She'd chickened out of cutting her hair, but she had taken the radio and logbook and stuffed them in her poncho. The extra weight helped her sink down and would keep anyone from seeing her approach. She slowly bunny hopped along the bottom in a manner reminiscent of the Apollo moonwalks. It was faster than swimming to shore.
After about an hour she could see the glow of building lights through the water's gloom. Taylor reached down and wedged the logbook and radio under a large rock, then began to swim up toward the boat quay she'd seen. With a gasp that was honestly unnecessary she breached the surface.
"Help! HEEEELP! ANYBODY!" Taylor cried out hoping there was someone outside to hear her.
"Hello? Carla! Someone's in the water! Get the spotlight!" someone shouted back.
Five minutes later a half dozen people had helped Taylor out of the water and gotten her inside. Now she sat bundled in towels and a heavy blanket with a warm mug of coffee in her hands. They seemed stunned by Taylor's arrival.
Behind them, anthoer group came down the stairs, Presumably these were guests. First a large man with a salt and pepper beard in a flannel shirt looking like the stereotypical Paul Bunyan, then his pregnant wife and their 5 children ranging from their eldest daughter, who looked a couple years older than Taylor, their son who could have been mistaken for Taylor's fraternal twin. then on down to the youngest who was staring at Taylor with wide eyes through the bannister and being held back by her middle brother and sister.
Seeing that nobody was wanting to do much of anything, the family patriarch decided to take charge.
"Matthew, Alicia, take Amanda back up to your room and stay there." He turned to his wife "Charity, find somethign in Margaret and Daniel's bags the young lady can wear. Daniel, go with Mrs. Richardson..." indicating with a nod of his head the apparent owner/operator of the bed and breakfast, "while she contacts the authorities. Someone is probably looking for this young lady and as Servants to the Lord, we should do whatever we can to help."
"Sure thing, Dad," Daniel clapped his hands. "Come on folks, nothing to see here. Please disperse."
"Margaret, while Charity is finding some clothes for. the young lady..."
"Taylor. Taylor Moore." she responded softly.
"Right. while Charity is finding something for Taylor to wear why don't you take her upstairs so she can get a hot shower and clean up. She seems to have had quite the harrowing ordeal."
9:30 PM
Now properly dressed and feeling far more human, Taylor was sitting on the couch in the front lounge, Margaret "Call me Molly." was behind her brushing out and braiding her hair. Her father, who'd introduced himself as Michael, had pulled over a chair to face Taylor. He sat calmly, elbows on his knees, hands loosely clasped and supporting his chin. Daniel was sitting on the other side of the lounge playing with his phone.
"Miss Moore, I understand that you've probably gone through a frightful ordeal and if you don't want to talk about it with me I completely understand. But, Daniel tells me with the current ongoing National Crisis, the Sheriff's Department is rather swamped and won't be able to send anyone here until in the morning. You must have family that is worried sick about you. Regardless of the hour it would be best if they knew you were safe and unharmed."
"Thanks Mister Carpenter. You and your family have been so nice. You REALLY have no idea about the weekend I've had. But... Um... my parents.... are dead. Albany."
"I'm very sorry for your loss, my dear." He made the sign of the cross "Au nom du Pere et du Fils et du Saint-Esprit. Amen. Is there anyone else you can contact?"
I noticed an odd gleam in his eye. I though it was tears of sympathy but in the back of my mind something didn't seemed... off. I wasn't this lucky. not after what I'd been through. Maybe it was the humming Molly had been doing while braiding my hair. Or the odd glances Daniel kept giving me when he thought I couldn't see him. Maybe it was that there weren't any other guests or that the staff hadn't been concerned about me at all like the Carpenters.
He was being nice. He was trying to help, right?
But... so had Alexandria.
"My grandpa lives in Brockton Bay, there's some family friends there too. If I could call them?"
"Absolutely. Daniel, would you mind if Taylor uses your phone?"
"Kinda?" He replied, not looking up from whatever game her was playing.
Michael turned to him and frowned. "Daniel..."
Molly scoffed and pulled hers out. "Here, use mine T. My little brother's just being an obnoxious jerk."
"HEY!"
"In the meantime, would you like something to eat Taylor? A sandwich perhaps? I'm sure the inn won't mind too much if I raid their fridge for your sake."
"Um... yes, please."
"MAKE ME ONE TOO DAD!" Daniel cried.
Michael looked over and sighed as he stood up "I'll give you kids some privacy then."
Taylor poked at the phone awkwardly before dialing Aunt Zoe. Molly leaned around and her face asked the unsaid question
"I'm not big on phones" Taylor replied, hanging up after it went to voice mail.
Molly nodded and settled back into the rhythm of humming and working on Taylor's hair.
"I've never met a teenager who wasn't addicted to their phone. Are you secretly an alien lizard in a rubber mask or something?"
"No it's just... bad memories." Taylor hung up again, no answer at Kurt and Lacey's house. One more try. as Taylor dialed the number for the bar Dad, Erwin and many other members of the Union most frequented.
*Captain's Table, Pat speaking. How can I help you?* The background noise sounded like the place was full.
"Hi Pat, I'm looking for Grandpa Erwin, is he there?"
You could almost hear the Spock Eyebrow over the line. *Who's calling?*
"Tell him it's his Little Owl. I need him to come pick me up."
There was a long pause. "One second." then the background din was muffled as Pat apparently shouted off to the side *ERWIN! PHONE!*
A few seconds passed before a gruff voice sounded. *You got Erwin. Taylor, is that you?*
"Grandpa! Oh, Thank God. I thought I was in so much trouble." Taylor acted incredibly relieved.
*Calm down, girl. What's going on?*
"It's VERY long story. but I need a HUGE favor. Can you drive up to Lake Champlain and get me?"
*I can see you somehow ending up there being a long and sordid tale. Are you sure you're all right? See any Sea Monsters?*
"I'm a bit freaked out, but I'm okay physically. I tried calling Miss Zoe and Miss Lacey but I didn't get an answer."
*Lacey's here at the bar. I'll get her for ya.*
"No! No. Just... can you please come up here? I'm at the North Hero House Inn on Highway US-2. You know where that is?"
*Yeah. I can find it. Might have to sQuint a bit to see it on the map. Lacey and I'll be there in a couple of hours.*
"Thanks Grandpa. Love you!" Taylor finished and pushed the end call icon.
"Is everything all right, Taylor?" Michael said as he came back from the kitchen with a tray of sandwiches and a few cans of soda.
"Yeah, Mister Carpenter... I think I'll be okay." Taylor replied.
Erwin scowled as he hung up the phone and gave Pat a LOOK that spoke volumes.
"What do you need?" Pat simply stated. He knew that look.
"Two for the road and start spreading the word quietly. Danny and Annie's little girl is in Trouble."
"Copy that." the barman turned and prepared a pair of drinks.
Eriwn turned back to the crowd. They'd been having an impromptu wake for Danny and Taylor which had become a bit of a celebration after the President's UN telecast. Focusing on a fireplug of a woman he bellowed. "LACEY! NEED A RIDE!"
"FUCK YOU, YOU OLD PERVY FART! I KNOW YOU WALK TO YOUR BOAT!"
"THAT AN OFFER?"
"NO, YOU SHITHEAD!"
"STILL NEED A CAR AND YOU'RE SOBER!"
"'CAUSE I GOTTA TAKE MY DRUNKASS HUSBAND HOME!"
"I'LL COVER HIS TAB TONIGHT!"
The cacophony in the bar to a screeching halt like a record skip. Erwin NEVER paid someone else's tab.
Lacey reached up with one hand. Pat expertly pitched her keys to her like a professional fastball.
She stalked up to the bar, Erwin handed her a thermos of Pat's Famous Navy Coffee.
"Where we going?"
"Vermont."
Tuesday 12:00 AM
A somewhat beaten up dark blue 4-door Volvo sedan pulled into the lot. One of the last models made before the company went under. (Literally. Fuck you, Leviathan) It looked like crap, but underneath the hood was a true high performance vehicle. In Lacey's capable hands, she'd made the normally 3+ hour drive from Brockton Bay in a little over two.
Once Erwin had told her that they were getting TAYLOR, the speed traps she'd blown through just collectively put their hands up and said "Nope. Not dealing with this shit tonight."
Lacey started to open the door but Erwin put a hand on her shoulder. "Stay here. This stinks like a whale carcass."
"What do you..." She looked again and nodded in agreement. A big place like this should be packed for the season. She could imagine people running because of what happened on Friday, but with all the casualties. "Right... safe beds should be at a premium now. Instead it feels like the hammer's about to drop. Need a gun? There's one in the glove box."
"Keep it. Give me five minutes." Erwin said as he stepped out.
"Hello? Taylor?" Erwin called as he opened the front door.
Taylor jumped up where she'd been resting her eyes, the Carpenters waking as well. "Grandpa!"
"Ah, you must be Mister..." Michael said and his children stood beside him.
"Erwin's fine. And you?"
"Michael Carpenter, My daughter Margaret and my son Daniel. I'm glad to see that Miss Moore's family was able to come so quickly. Presumably."
"Presumably." Erwin returned the comment.
Taylor blinked at the nonsequitur. "Oh! Right! Stranger Danger and all. I guess you can't be too careful nowadays."
"Right. Taylor, you remember Quint, that sonofabitch who once shot me in the leg?"
"Grandpa Erwin, that was you somehow hitting yourself whilst aiming at a 20 foot shark."
"Twenty-five! Three tons of him!"
Taylor turned to Michael. "Yup, he's him! We're good!"
Michael nodded. "Then God's Grace speed your journey. Taylor. Children, it's late. up to bed with you." With that, Mister Carpenter went over and began climbing the stairs to the bedrooms.
Taylor turned and and gave Molly a hug. "That's for everything Molly, I love what you've done for my hair. It was just an absolute mess."
"No problem, T. Take care of yourself."
Daniel came over and gave Taylor what might've been seen as a playful shove towards the door. "Get on outta here ya big dork." Daniel snarked.
Taylor stopped, waved back to them before turning and leaving the lobby, Erwin close behind her.
As the door closed behind her Erwin began gently pushing Taylor forward, softly telling her "get in the car get in now now now."
Taylor nodded and almost jumped in the backseat as Erwin slammed his door "Go! GO!"
Lacey didn't hesitate. pulling out in a spray of gravel.
Meanwhile, the two eldest 'Carpenter' children nodded to each other.
"What the FUCK was that?"
"Little brother, I have no fucking idea. Think Dad is rattled enough for us to ditch him?"
"He might have burned fear out of my brain but I was about to shit myself in terror. That girl's 'grandfather' was even WORSE. Yeah, I think now is our best chance."
"I would suggest killing everyone and setting the place on fire if we actually could pull it off without stabbing each other in the back,"
"Fire is GOOD. I'll jam the doors, you slash the tires on the other cars?"
"Sounds like a plan."
Yes, that was Heartbreaker, Cherish, Hijack and a few of his brood looking for love in all the wrong places. With everyone focused on Albany it was easy to slip over the border, with Cherish pumping out 'keep away vibes'.
Taylor of course, was completely flummoxing them. Erwin though, is just that much of a BADASS.
Holy shit. Taylor and Erwin just got fucking lucky as hell. Though this should be interesting for the heartbroken considering cherish and Alex would have the perfect time to kill their father.
Oh, oh my. I wonder... Taylor's invulnerability and Death auta can totally no-sell jack slash, provided his thinker/master "I win" power is nullified. Which it ought to be. So, odds she runs into a cute little Bonesaw and pops the siberian likes a soap bubble?
My current guess on her finding out she's radioactive is Amy throwing her hands up and creating radiation scrubbing biological agents and redesigning her patients to resist super-cancer. Because if anything could convince Amy to go biotinker without snapping, it would be someone constantly irradiating her hard work

For me the funniest end of Jack is when the main character does not even know Jack was there. Just accidentally clapped him with plasma bomb or that one where Jack was mistaken for an ordinary guy and brought to jail where police recognize and shoot him.
This story may just go that way with Jack just croaking due to all the radiation going around

As for Heartbreaker and family, QA was likely feeding back some "don't fuck with me", or maybe "I can kill everyone single one of you, and none of you have a prayer of stopping me" vibes which should have rattled all of 'em pretty good. Erwin on the other hand, is just hardcore "Thou shalt not screw with family or they'll never find a body" vibes.
Indeed, but for different reasons. Taylor because it's allowed her to get back to Brockton Bay without drawing the attention of the PRT.
Erwin because he managed to LIVE through that and he KNOWS it.
Yup. [Broadcast] can subvert most shards. [Queen Administrator/High Priest] and [Salvage/Master of Ceremonies] (GU/Butcher) have the same hierarchy rank in the Shard network. [The Eye] (Contessa/Dinah) and [Stasis] (Alexandria/Clockblocker) are lower ranked.
For this story Butcher has a LIVING Eden shard, just like Leet [Prototype]. As a result, they're not nearly as crazy as the rabid bloodthirsty cannibal the PRT makes them out to be. Kimmie (Fester/Butcher IV) was just "that eccentric but cool Aunt" in Taylor's mind.
Corrected but the last two are intentional, indicating subtle emphasis. Stranger Danger is a well established thing on Earth Bet. "Grandpa Erwin", "Miss Zoe" and "Miss Lacey" are Taylor's general distress codes. Danny and Annette taught her that on those summer boat trips. "sQuint" and "Sea Monster" are Erwin's countersigns, being Jaws references. The fact Erwin both looks like Robert Shaw and is the sort of talented, charismatic, belligerent, alcoholic genius who spends a lot of time on a boat hunting Nazis that Hemingway would think of as an absolute fucking unit was not lost on Annette.
Now, before I post the next chapter I'd like to ask you all a question. Nothing bad, but there's a little bit of a spoiler.
Because of Eidolon's death, Dauntless is going to be transferred to Houston as second-in-command. Armsmaster is both secretly thrilled to watch him go and furious that Shawn, in his mind, is being promoted over him.
In any case, the ENE Protectorate will be getting a new cape as a replacement. I have a character already thought up. But there are some premises to consider.
First: Older people are less prone to Trigger. It's the generally accepted reason as to why Danny didn't after Annette's death.
Second: There are no useless powers. All of them have some method of creating conflict and want to do so for the sake of gathering [DATA].
Third: Friday afternoon was pretty crazy. While phone and internet services on Earth Bet are more distributed and robust, a good portion of New England didn't have signal for several hours. EMPs are a bitch. It took time for information about Albany to spread. The public just knew the Endbringer Sirens went off and that it was somewhere else.
Fourth: By evening, Zoe's getting worried. Cell phone service is jammed, and the Barnes' no longer have a landline. She decides to drive over to
Danny's house to use his phone to try and call Alan.
Fifth: Capes in Worm are a result of people having "The Worst Day of Thier Lives"...
And she finds Danny's body, with the TV blaring about how Albany has been wiped off the face of the Earth.
So the question is: What powers would Zoe Barnes Trigger with? Right now, she doesn't. But, I AM willing to consider ideas and suggestions.
Building off the idea of her "Trigger Focus" being a fervent desire to be able to 'reach out and make her family safe', she triggers with a Shaker power. This power allows her to layer protective fields over individuals at a distance. She can't layer them over herself, and she isn't Narwhal, so she can't cut someone in half with a forcefield, but she doesn't have to make the fields permeable to air, and she can make them restrict movement, allowing her to basically reach out and lock down the movement of various individuals, while she remains as a weak link as she can't protect herself (and her mentality is a bit shifted to not consider herself worth protecting as much any more). A single layer could be easily broken by the average person punching it, but she can layer them pretty quickly, and it can stack up quite a bit.
If she's in denial of their death, she could trigger with a projection ability like Manton? Idealized family to hold close to her. Of course, since that doesn't cause enough conflict, she could have a thinker/master component to summon projections of those others around her have lost. Because this would totally drive tattletale insane, seeing her brother's ghost. Or the dallons seeing fleur. Or e88 seeing Iron rain. Coil could be haunted by the officer from ellisburg he shot in the back. And to make her even more stressed, the projections die in order to keep her alive, but not safe.
Psychological stress generally results in thinkers, tinkers, masters, or shakers. Physical violence tends to result in more direct powers so seeing Danny and a news broadcast is likely to be a more mental power. Masters is generally isolation, alienation, exile or betrayal which doesn't fit.
Tinker is more about long term issues though spiraling over hours might fit, but best bet is Thinker due to being mental or emotional strain. But there's a lot of play around what's she's focusing on. Protecting her daughter Anne could be a shield, power armor, surveillance etc thinker. Risks could be precog etc.
Personally I like the idea of heavy duty power armor, it's exactly the kind of power that doesn't actually solve anything but still kind of fits. Further lots of drama options for the story around Armsmaster, radiation protection, wanting to get Anne into it etc.
This is hard... This will seriously mess up Zoe...
A "protection tinker" to keep her daughter with her (even if she wants it or not) [Cage/Containment Tinker] tinker 5
A mover/thinker power to escape this situation like Strider but weaker ? Maybe...mover 3
A thinker power to help her process this situation. [Superhot/Time bullet] thinker 2
Danny is "hurt" Infront of her, she wants him to be not hurt. [Time reversal state] Striker 7

Whatever power she gets, the mental gymnastics Zoe is going to make when she knows about what really happened in Albany:
The Simurgh started this
Taylor exploded and killed half her family but also the Ziz and by accident
And her father killed himself
So Taylor is in a worse situation
But her family is almost completely dead
And it's Taylor's fault but not really
It's a f*cking spiral!
